Duchess Meghan’s Archetypes season finale episode is all about dudes

The final episode of the Duchess of Sussex’s Archetypes is here! The Spotify summary calls it “the season finale,” suggesting that Season 2 is already being planned, which is exciting! Meghan’s first Archetypes season was a massive success and a cultural conversation-starter. I have a suggestion for Meghan for an episode for Season 2: “Exploiting the ‘Exotic’ – an examination of biraciality.” But I’m getting ahead of myself! The final episode of Season 1 is “Man-ifesting a Cultural Shift.” She talks to Andy Cohen, Trevor Noah and Judd Apatow. This is the first time in the first season she’s interviewing dudes about archetypes, stereotypes and language. Here’s the pod:

As it turns out, Meghan was/is a huge Real Housewives fan and she spills some tea. When she was on Suits, she tried to get booked on Watch What Happens Live. Andy Cohen wasn’t shocked – he and his staff apparently talked about and wondered about that for years. Meghan also admits that she doesn’t watch Real Housewives these days because her own life became super-dramatic.

I’ll admit that I didn’t think much of Meghan’s dude choices, but maybe these dudes are smart picks. Cohen arguably has more cultural influence than nearly any television producer. Apatow has been criticized many times for his creation of two-dimensional female characters, notably the “nag” archetype, which Meghan gets into.

It’s also kind of funny to me that this episode is the longest one. The first time she interviews men, they would not STFU and Meghan gave them all a huge amount of space. I’m just saying… if these were women being interviewed, Meghan probably would have done a tighter edit!!!

Katherine Heigl: ‘I absolutely owe anyone an apology I unwittingly offended’

wenn23739823

Kitty litter spokeswoman Katherine Heigl would like to explain why she shouldn’t have said all of the terrible things she’s said. Heigl appeared on Howard Stern’s show on Wednesday – perhaps to shill kitty litter? – and she and Stern ended up getting into EVERYTHING. It would involve about a million links, so perhaps it’s best to glance through our Heigl archives from the past, say, seven years. Or more. She’s been a pill for the better part of a decade and there are dozens of instances of her unpleasant attitude, diva behavior and general sourness. And what’s funny is that Howard Stern basically asked her about all of it.

On criticizing Knocked Up after it made her a star: “That was dumb. I liked the movie a lot. I just didn’t like me. She was kind of like, she was so judgmental and kind of uptight and controlling and all these things and I really went with it while we were doing it, and a lot of it, Judd allows everyone to be very free and improvise and whatever and afterwards, I was like, ‘Why is that where I went with this? What an a–hole she is!’ It was, again, one of those situations, it was a huge opportunity for me. I was being interviewed for Vanity Fair. Like, I was on the cover of Vanity Fair, it was a huge big deal for me. And the journalist…just said, ‘You know a lot of women felt it was a little sexist’ so then I felt obligated to answer that and so I tried in my very sort of ungracious way to answer why I felt that it maybe was a little.”

She admits she didn’t even call Judd Apatow to apologize: “I probably should’ve [called them]. But what I did was very, I did it publicly instead and kind of tried to say, look, this was not what I meant and this was an incredible experience for me and they were incredibly good to me on this movie, so I did not mean to s–t on them at all. I’ve thought about like, writing a note. I feel embarrassed. I don’t want it to feel insincere on any level.”

Why she announced that she was withdrawing her name from Emmy consideration in 2008: “I didn’t feel good about my performance. There was a part of me that thought, because I had won the year before, that I needed juicy, dramatic, emotional material and I just didn’t have that that season… I went in [to speak to Shonda Rhimes] ’cause I was really embarrassed. So I went in to Shonda and said, ‘I’m so sorry. That wasn’t cool. I should not have said that’…I shouldn’t have said anything publicly but at the time, I didn’t think anybody would notice. I didn’t know that journalists would see who submitted and who didn’t. I just quietly didn’t submit and then it became a story and then I felt I was obligated to make my statement and ‘shut up, Katie.’”

She owes apologies to a lot of people: “I absolutely owe anyone an apology I unwittingly offended or disrespected. I get it. It was an immature dumbass moment.”

She started going to therapy: “I started going because of the scrutiny – and I was not handling it well. I was feeling completely like the biggest piece of s— on the bottom of your shoe. I was really struggling with it and how to not take it all really personally.”

She found herself acting timidly on sets: “I was like, ‘This is nonsense. Stop it. Get some help and own your voice.’ “

[From E! News and People]

Just my opinion: she’s still full of sh-t. You can hear the bullsh-t and lies and inadvertent truths dripping off these quotes. “…That I needed juicy, dramatic, emotional material and I just didn’t have that that season…” Meaning she still feels like she was fundamentally justified for throwing the writers under the bus. Meaning she still feels like her material was sub-par and it was her duty to say so publicly. And then: “I’ve thought about like, writing a note. I feel embarrassed. I don’t want it to feel insincere on any level.” Why would it be “insincere,” Heigl? Because you would just be apologizing with an eye-roll? Because she’s still pissed off that people are still disgusted by how many times she “unwittingly” offended and disrespected them.

Lena Dunham wasn’t going to pay any of the other artists on her book tour

wenn21692367

Lena Dunham’s book tour begins today. She wrote the memoir/advice book Not That Kind of Girl, which she’s been promoting all over the place for the past few weeks. She’s had glowing write-ups in the New York Times and People Magazine already, and I imagine there’s more to come. The NYT also wrote a preview of Lena’s 11-city book tour a few days ago, and they made it sound less like a book tour and more like a concentrated “festival” with other kinds of entertainment featured at each stop. Except the other entertainers wouldn’t be getting paid?

Last month, the writer, actor and producer Lena Dunham started an ambitious project. Nearly 600 people responded to an open call for video auditions on her website, including a sand artist, a ukulele player, a cappella singers, gymnasts, performance artists and stand-up comics, even some exceptionally charismatic babies. The seven who made the final cut won’t be making cameos in “Girls,” Ms. Dunham’s HBO show about Brooklyn 20-somethings. Instead, they’ll be the warm-up acts — performing free of charge — on an elaborately produced, 11-city tour to promote Ms. Dunham’s new book, “Not That Kind of Girl.”

“Three of the videos were disturbing, but the rest were super awesome,” Ms. Dunham said, adding that she spent several hours screening the auditions in bed.

In an era when author tours and splashy book parties have grown increasingly rare, Ms. Dunham has organized a traveling circus of sorts that seems more like a roving Burning Man festival than a sober, meet-the-author literary event. Prominent comedians and writers, such as the “Portlandia” star Carrie Brownstein and the novelist Zadie Smith, have thrown their weight behind Ms. Dunham and will appear on her tour as part of a carefully curated cast of artists, along with live music, poetry readings and, naturally, food trucks.

“I found the idea of a traditional author tour, where you go and stand behind the lectern and talk about yourself, I found it a little bit embarrassing, a little blatantly self-promotional and a little boring,” Ms. Dunham said. “I wanted it to have an arts festival feel, which is why we now have all these remarkable, special weirdos who I found on the Internet.”

Ms. Dunham’s critics are likely to see these highly produced spectacles as an over-the-top marketing stunt or yet another example of her inflated sense of self as an artist. Her fans are lining up, though. In less than a week, the tour sold around 8,000 tickets, which are selling for $38 at most locations. Tickets include a $28 signed hardcover of “Not That Kind of Girl,” which Random House is releasing on Tuesday.

[From The NYT]

Gawker pointed out that it’s a douche move to not pay the other performers at all, especially considering Special Snowflake Dunham got a $3.5 million advance for the book, plus she’ll get royalties and such. And this whole festival atmosphere was her idea. So after Gawker pointed out Lena’s douche move, she got on Twitter to explain:

As an artist raised by artists, no one believes more than I do that creators should be fairly compensated for their work.

This feature of the tour was meant to be a way to showcase local talent and I could not be more excited about it.

Some good points were raised and I’ve ensured that all opening acts will be compensated for their time, their labor and their talents.

The fact that Gawker pointed this out really proves Judd Apatow’s saying that “a good note can come from anywhere.”

[From Lena’s Twitter]

“The fact that Gawker pointed this out really proves Judd Apatow’s saying that ‘a good note can come from anywhere’”??? Brilliant save, Lena. You can’t tell me she didn’t know that the artists weren’t being paid and she only “ensured” their pay after Gawker pointed it out. And Lena still acts like she has the moral high ground, like she’s deigning to listen to advice from the peasants at Gawker.

True Detective Will Have Three Leads in Season Two

true detective

-Everything you think you know about True Detective Season 2 is wrong.

-I’m not filled with loathing and disgust when looking upon Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s wedding photos. Clearly, I’m coming down with something.

-Meanwhile, they’re staying at Castlemartyr Resort for their honeymoon. As if the Irish haven’t suffered enough…

-More things you didn’t want to know about Kimye: Kylie Jenner and Jaden Smith were spotted making out at the wedding.

Bill Murray crashed a bachelor party and gave an awesome speech about relationships:  “Buy a plane ticket for the two of you to travel all around the world and go to places that are hard to go to and hard to get out of, and if when you come back to JFK, when you land in JFK and you’re still in love with that person, get married at the airport.”

Seth Rogen may have a point about the Washington Post critic making a link between his new movie and the USCB shootings, but I still hate the way he responded.

-I keep hearing people raving about this show In the Flesh. Might have to give it a whirl.

Jessica Simpson‘s bikini pic on Instagram might be the most awkward of all awkward poses.

-Being friends with Miranda Kerr means you get a lot of free clothes. You’re probably plagued by insecurity and low self-esteem too, but FREE CLOTHES!

-This photo of Deryck Whibley is shockingly sad — but he’s getting better.

Lindsay Lohan got kicked off a yacht in Cannes because karma.

-Speaking of yacht life, Justin Bieber flirted with a model after hanging out on a yacht with Gigi Hadid.

Kate Middleton‘s bare butt was exposed during a Marilyn Monroe moment — and a German paper published a photo of it because the world is gross.

Scarlett Johansson might play Dolly Parton? God help us all.

Channing Tatum is so awesome, he can even make Shia LaBeouf sound like a cool guy.

-Is George Clooney having a Downton Abbey wedding? I refuse to believe this. Je refuse!

-The Before You Know It trailer gave me a lot of feels.

Kate Upton, Cameron & Leslie in ‘The Other Woman’ trailer: how does it look?

Cameron Diaz Kate Upton

The trailer for The Other Woman has arrived, and the movie looks a lot better than I expected. Romantic comedies aren’t what they used to be. Nobody makes movies like When Harry Met Sally anymore! Instead we usually get crap like Bride Wars where two best friends act like total jerks while humiliating themselves over their competing wedding ceremonies. God, I hated that movie because it was so demeaning to women. I also hate that Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson took paychecks for that crap. Sadly that movie fits the recent trend of romcoms, which perpetuate the stereotype of petty, materialistic, warring women. Spare me, Hollywood.

Now The Other Woman looks fun and doesn’t “hilariously” pit women against each other for the sake of a man’s affections. Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann, and Kate Upton star as, “the lawyer, the wife, and the boobs,” respectively speaking. They all figure out that the same guy is yanking all their chains, so they team up to teach him a lesson. There’s never any question of them knocking each other around to “win” the man. This looks really funny and like a good female-bonding movie. Here’s the trailer:

So what do you think of Kate Upton’s big breakout in movies? She’s had a few minor film roles before, but this is the first time she’s getting some good airtime. Of course her rack is jiggling all over the place, and girl does look good. I think she’s supposed to play an airhead, which is exactly what she’s pulling off in the trailer. Leslie Mann is so lovely. I know some people don’t dig her and think she gets her roles because of her husband, Judd Apatow. To be fair, she appears in many of Judd’s films, but she holds her own well enough.

What I really like about this movie is how these women stick together and don’t even consider fighting over the loser guy. That’s pretty awesome.
