Denmark’s Crown Princess Mary covers Vogue Australia: stunning or blah?

mary1

I’ll admit it: I’ve never paid much attention to Denmark’s Crown Princess Mary. There are dedicated royal-watchers who enjoy all of the royal houses, but I generally limit myself to the Windsors, Bernadottes and Grimaldis. Crown Princess Mary is the Australian woman who married Crown Prince Frederick in 2004, after a three-year courtship and one-year-long engagement. They met in a pub in Sydney, Australia in 2000 and love blossomed. Mary is actually accomplished, and she worked at real jobs before and during their courtship. She’s often compared to the Duchess of Cambridge because of the whole “commoner marrying a prince” thing, but in side-by-side comparisons, Mary does seem like a better/cooler/more accomplished person.

Anyway, Mary and Frederick cover the August issue of Vogue Australia. Mary is sort of a hero (the Duchess Kate of Australia, if you will) in her home country, so it makes sense that they would do an exclusive photoshoot for Australian Vogue. The photoshoot was done by Mario Testino, and Mary and Frederick even included their four kids in one of the photos. They are parents to Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, and twins Vincent and Josephine. Here are some highlights from Mary’s interview:

Whether she considers herself a role model: “I always find it difficult to speak of myself as a role model, you know, because I think it is other people and their impression of you that makes a role model. It’s not something I consciously think about but at the same time I am very aware of my role and my responsibility.”

Her work with the conditions within the fashion industry: “It will take time to create real and sustainable change. If we are talking about the textile and fashion industry, it is one of the most female-dominated industries in the world and yet many of these working women are voiceless. I do use the platform I have built up over the years as a vocal and passionate voice for the empowerment of women and girls and the protection and respect of their human rights to bring attention to this.”

Her foundation deals with issues of domestic violence, bullying and loneliness: “One thing I have always found difficult from as early as I can remember is seeing people who appear to be alone. It has always affected me deeply and I can’t explain why. To see people standing on the outside looking in, who can’t understand why they aren’t part of a community or group. We all have this innate fear of not belonging… We all have a right to belong. The abused woman, the bullied child, and the lonely adolescent feel very, very lonely in the world with their problems and will often never share them.”

[From The Daily Mail]

I think it’s difficult to make “loneliness” a cause, specifically a royal cause. Lots of people are alone, and lots of people are lonely, but she’s conflating those two things and making it seem like everyone who is alone is pitiable and sad. While “loneliness” is good subject to raise and de-stigmatize, what work is there to be done realistically? As for the rest of it, she sounds absolutely fine. It would be fascinating to see the Duchess of Cambridge do an interview like this at one point, but it won’t happen.

Jennifer Lopez: Dancers are better in bed, ‘musicians are too self-absorbed’

JL1

Jennifer Lopez’s W Magazine profile just gave me the perfect term for why I love her so much: she is “the people’s diva.” Like, the people’s princess, only in multi-hyphenate diva form. Anyway, I sort of hate Jennifer’s W Magazine editorial – you can see the slideshow here. It’s sort of awful, and they made Jennifer wear a terrible blonde mullet wig in half the pics. As for the interview, it’s longer than most W Mag profiles. It reads like a day-in-the-life piece, and Jennifer is really, really busy. You can read the full piece here, and here are some highlights:

The people’s diva: “I’ve been in the grind and the game for a long time. At a certain point, people respect you when they see you fall down and get back up. The more you’re in this life, the more they celebrate your triumphs. When it comes to work, I never get tired. But with personal failures, I have thought, This is too hard. When my marriage ended, it was not easy to find forgiveness. It wasn’t the dream that I had hoped for, and it would have been easier to fan the flames of resentment, disappointment, and anger. But Marc is the father of my children [8-year-old twins], and that’s never going away. So, I have to work to make things right. And that is, by far, the hardest work I do.”

She’s fine-boned: “When I first came to Los Angeles, someone told me I would be a star because of my tiny ankles and wrists. They said that was the key to it all.”

She’s constantly being swarmed by fans: “It’s been like that since Selena. I never thought about fame until then. After that film, I would have panic attacks. I remember walking down the street, and someone yelled, ‘Jennifer!’ and I didn’t know who it was. I ran home. From that point forward, I realized I couldn’t be alone in public. I don’t think I’ve been alone on the street in over 20 years.”

Who is better in bed: “Last time I was here, they asked me who is better in bed—dancers, musicians, or actors? I said, ‘Dancers!’ Musicians are too self-absorbed. They are too concerned with themselves to be great in bed.”

On Marc Anthony: “I hung in there for seven years. I knew very quickly that it wasn’t the right thing.”

On Casper Smart: “We got together and broke up and are now together again. I still think about getting married and having that long life with someone. I love the movie The Notebook. A dream of mine is to grow old with someone.”

On being more accessible after her stint on American Idol: “It has been easier. People may now think I’m ‘nice,’ but they still act surprised when I’m smart. It’s a man’s world, and, truly, people in a business setting do not value a woman as much as a man. I feel like I’m constantly having to prove myself. If a man does one thing well, people immediately say he’s a genius. Women have to do something remarkable over and over and over. And, even then, they get questions about their love life. People underestimate me. They always have, and maybe that’s for the best. It’s fun to prove them wrong.”

[From W Magazine]

I do think J.Lo is smart… in almost every area of her life. She’s dumb in love, but smart everywhere else. And she’s right about people undervaluing her simply because she’s a woman, just as she’s right about constantly being underestimated. I love the bit about her thin ankles and wrists, I love the shade she has for Marc Anthony and I’m absolutely astonished that she hasn’t been alone in public in 20 years. She’s also wrong about dancers being the best lovers – swimmers are obviously the best lovers!

Meanwhile, there’s one thing I’d like to mention – last week, there was a controversy about J.Lo’s new single, “Ain’t Your Mama.” The song is awful, full-stop. But it was written by Meghan Trainor, and there were widespread reports that the track had been “produced” by Dr. Luke. Jennifer got a lot of online hate and shade for that. But E! News reported that Trainor had written the song several years back and her version was produced by Dr. Luke back then, before Kesha’s lawsuit. Then Trainor gave the song to J.Lo and J.Lo didn’t know Dr. Luke had ever had his fingerprints on it. Trainor confirmed that version of events this week, calling the backlash against Jennifer “ridiculous” and “not fair on her, not at all.”

Zoe Saldana on her weight loss: ‘I mean it mommies, if I did it you can too’

22nd Annual ELLE Women in Hollywood Awards - Arrivals
For months, Zoe Saldana has been lamenting the fact that she hasn’t lost the minor amount of baby weight she was holding onto after having her twin boys, Bowie and Cy, in November, 2014. In April of this year she wrote that the weight gain from pregnancy was “a very challenging experience,” that “bouncing back feels impossible,” and that “it is slow, painful and frustrating. But it is worth it.”

Then, this September she said thateverything hurts and feels uncomfortable” compared to her pre-pregnancy body and that “I feel bad for those women who are desperate and want to bounce back three months after having a baby… I definitely took a break and trusted that my body was going to bounce back when it was ready. I never wanted to push myself.

Well it’s been a year and Zoe can once again fit back into her Guardians of the Galaxy costume. She posted the following picture to Instagram, along with a bikini pic.

In the past two years I lost 50 lbs and got to my goal weight. I was able to lose it because I got my appendix out and that solved a lot of ongoing health issues I’d had. Plus I had the time and freedom – I work from home and have more time to exercise, and I figured out that if I count calories it’s a lot simpler than eliminating my favorite foods. (I used MyFitnessPal and a food scale. I do emotional eat but once I started counting everything it became easier to control.)

My point is that yes weight loss is achievable by us non-celebrities, and I definitely get the urge to share it and explain how you did it, but I don’t do this unless people ask and I would never presume to tell someone else that “if I can do it all moms can.” Weight loss has to be on people’s own schedule. Zoe knows this as it took her a year. Some women work 9 to 5 and then go home and have to make dinner, care for children, and clean the house. I’m not saying weight loss is impossible for anyone, it’s just that some have it much harder than others.

You would think that Zoe, who complained multiple times that it was tough for her to lose the weight from having twins, would not frame her weight loss this way. If Zoe would have posted that picture and just talked about it on her own terms that would have been fine. I just question why she addressed her post to all mothers, especially when she’s an incredibly privileged celebrity with so many advantages and resources.

On the other hand, maybe she’s talking like this because it was really hard for her and she’s trying to be encouraging. There are just shades of Maria Kang in that post.

Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt took Vivienne & Knox to a NYC Barnes & Noble

Yesterday, I wrote this about Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt: “Every time they step onto a red carpet, or step out for a pap stroll, every single blog and magazine in the world will run the photos. Why spend money on advertising when you can get all of it for free?” Lo and behold, Brad and Angelina have a movie to promote and they stepped out in New York on Tuesday afternoon for a nice family pap stroll. These photos are already all over the blogs and news outlets. Every time Angelina and/or Brad step out with their kids, it’s a headline. So… seriously, why spend the money on commercials for By the Sea?

Anyway, Angelina and Brad took their two youngest children, twins Vivienne and Knox, out to Barnes & Noble in Manhattan. Angelina and Brad don’t seem like the kinds of parents who get their kids the big, expensive toys every other month – most of the time, when we see the kids out with their parents, they’re going to a book store or an arts & crafts store or maybe to a fast food joint. For this trip, they seemed to have loaded up on books too – they left with at least three bags full of stuff. As for Vivienne and Knox… these kids are so cute. I like that Vivienne has permanent bedhead, like she always looks like she just woke up from a nap. Knox seems very quiet, but like a deep thinker. And Knox is getting more strawberry blonde/gingery as he gets older too!

Last night, Angelina and Brad walked the the red carpet for a screening of By the Sea, their first red carpet together since… the Unbroken premiere in Sydney, last year, I think? We’ll have those photos in a separate post, so please no threadjacking. Tomorrow night, they’ll be in LA for the AFI Fest premiere, and I’m excited to see what Angelina will wear (ten bucks says it will be a ‘70s style sack dress) and how much energy they bring to shilling their film. What I forgot was that Brad’s film The Big Short will also be premiering at the AFI Fest days later. Will Angelina walk that carpet too? Hm. Variety also did a rundown of how the AFI Fest has become a mixed bag of forgotten films and awards contenders, with no real rhyme or reason – go here to read.

On getting back in shape after giving birth to twins in December 2014:

Almost there! It’s been difficult but so rewarding. I feel strong. All it takes is determination! Mommies we can all do it, d*mn it!!!

Zoe previously talked about the impact of pregnancy on her body:

“Your body changes dramatically, inside and out. You grow in places you never knew you could, and you are tired beyond belief. In some cases more than others, your body experiences a kind of trauma through childbirth that is difficult to explain unless you’ve had that experience. My case was like that, everything from my thyroid to my platelets crashed. Thank God, we are all doing great now, but my body was really bent out of shape after the boys were born. Bouncing back feels impossible, but I know it is important as a woman, and now a mommy, to not give up. I am determined to get my energy back and find balance for my body before these little guys start walking, and before I go back to work…my clock is ticking!”

Zoe Saldana: “At the peak of my pregnancy I reached 185lbs”

467206186_master

On her post-baby figure:

I don’t want to get back to where I used to be. I want to feel healthy, and not just fit into the old jeans I used to wear. I’m a woman now. My body has changed forever. It’s softer… and stronger. Your body changes dramatically, inside and out. You grow in places you never knew you could, and you are tired beyond belief. In some cases more than others, your body experiences a kind of trauma through childbirth that is difficult to explain unless you’ve had that experience.

On the complications of her pregnancy:

Everything from my thyroid to my platelets crashed. Thank God, we are all doing great now, but my body was really bent out of shape after the boys were born. I know many of you have gone through this or are going through it as we speak. Let’s do it together. Let’s talk about it, hear each other out, and seek advice when we need it.

On how she plans on getting back in shape:

I started in January with Moyer (her trainer). I was 160lbs (at the peak of my pregnancy I reached 185lbs). I had no flexibility, weak joints, and exercising was painful. We started with just walking, I think I only walked that first month. I did however change the way I eat. I want to prove to myself that if I have the right determination I can do anything.

… says Zoe, who gave birth to twins 6 months ago.

‘Avengers: Age Of Ultron’: what did you think? (spoilers)

Marvel

Avengers: Age of Ultron arrived as one of this weekend’s big events (other than the royal baby) with the most character-packed Marvel installment yet. Around 800 actors filled the movie, yet it still managed to overflow with CGI effects. The movie shall easily be Marvel’s biggest moneymaker yet. Before this weekend, the film earned $201 million overseas. In North America, the film pulled in around $84 million on Friday, and the comic nerds will probably make multiple visits throughout the weekend. I imagine it will hit well over $200,000 total for the weekend.

As a whole, I didn’t enjoy this film as much as The Avengers, but it was a strong entry and pushed several individual storylines into progression. I still dug this movie a lot, although the opening fight scene was so relentlessly action-packed that I feared Marvel would deliver a hollow cartoon. Luckily, Age of Ultron was peppered with moments of humor, humanity, and character development. Here are my thoughts on several of the storylines:

* Black Widow and Hulk’s romance didn’t feel shoehorned into the film at all. Their attraction, mutual respect, and respective vulnerabilities felt very organic. In the context of how the Marvel films portray the MCU, this relationship makes a lot of sense. And no, Black Widow wasn’t wh*ring around in any sense of the word.

* Tony Stark still drives me insane. He’s the douche Avenger. Ultron is an annoying, smug extension of Tony’s megalomaniacal personality. Stark couldn’t help himself from messing with artificial intelligence. Unlike the other characters, Stark’s insufferable persona overwhelms his Iron Man alter ego. I was glad to see him depart at the end, but we’ll see him again in Cap 3: Civil War.

* Captain America and his Boy Scout image mostly served as a punchline in this film, which is fine. Joss Whedon always writes worse dialogue for Cap than what he receives in his standalone movies. Cap will get his due again. Thor and his gregarious, Asgardian manner of speaking were also nice comic relief.

* Hawkeye got his backstory and the homelife that Cap has always wanted. The surprise of seeing Hawkeye’s civilian family lent a nice respite from the movie’s otherwise frenetic pace. The various characters’ interactions with the children and down-home country life were very reflective of their personalities.

* The Twins (“He’s fast, and she’s weird”) were a lovely addition, especially Scarlet Witch. They were orphans in search of a family, and in the end, only one made it out alive. Poor Quicksilver went out for a greater cause. Scarlet Witch held her own amongst the group, and Hawkeye’s recruitment speech was pretty awesome.

* Vision was … a vision to behold. Paul Bettany delivered a fantastic, enigmatic performance (worth of Thor’s hammer). I especially liked the part where he was mesmerized by his own reflection.

* The film contained a zillion cameos from various MCU characters. Jane and Pepper Potts received shoutouts, but we saw many other characters. Nick Fury, Agent Carter, Maria Hill, Falcon, Heimdall, Professor Selvig, and others enjoyed appearances. No Loki and no Bucky Barnes. I was okay with no Loki because his presence is so huge (sorry, Dragonflies!), and this movie was already jam-packed. Bucky (by nature) is supposed to be “in the wind,” so we’ll see him next in Cap 3.

* The New Avengers team assembled at the end. War Machine, Falcon, Scarlet Witch, and Vision joined up with Cap and Black Widow to keep on avenging. This changing of the guard will switch things up nicely, and some people see this new team as Marvel’s overdue nod to their ongoing diversity problem.

* The mid-credits scene carried vast implications in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Thanos (the mad titan) grabs an Infinity Gauntlet and vows to collect the stones. This is a different gauntlet than the one that Thor’s father, Odin, possesses … so now we know that more than one gauntlet exists in the MCU. *Cue soap opera stare face*
