Tracy Anderson’s Words, Then & Now

ffn_vcv_51367092

THEN – Tracy on walking as exercise in April 2016:

We are wrapped in bubble wrap. We think that making it through the pain cave is putting our workout gear on and getting to class. Now, I’m not knocking any level of showing up, but I think many people are stuck in preschool with their bodies. Going for a walk is like going to preschool—but you could go to college, you could get your master’s degree.

NOW – Tracy on walking as exercise in September 2016:

I always approve walking as a really great cardiovascular workout to do. It’s something that people think is for the aging crowd or that it’s not really aggressive enough, and I completely disagree with that. It’s a really responsible form of exercise. One of the great things about walking is that it’s something that almost everybody can do. It’s something that is very healthy because it doesn’t have harsh impact on your joints. And even though you are doing the same movement over and over, you can change your speed, you can change your stride, you can change all different things to keep yourself engaged. You burn less calories running than walking if you aren’t able to run for very long or run very well. To really be effective and calorie-burning, you have to be able to work your body to where it’s working up a sweat, where it’s pushing into that zone of actually being optimized to be effective in the calorie-burning range, so it’s much better to go for a long and powerful walk than it is to go for a short run.

Benji Madden: Cameron Diaz is ‘a modern day feminist’ who shares positivity

Benji Madden has a new extensive interview in Newsweek for the 20th anniversary of his band, Good Charlotte (with his twin brother, Joel). Good Charlotte returned from a multi-year hiatus to release a new album last week. I’m not too familiar with Benji and apart from the fact that he seems to be genuinely in love with and supportive of his wife, Cameron Diaz, I don’t have a strong opinion about him. A quick glance at our archives reminds me that he’s dated several famous women including Paris Hilton and Holly Madison and apart from hearing about his other occasional hookups, I haven’t heard a bad word about him in the 10 years I’ve run this site. No scandals, no paparazzi beat-downs, no DUIs. That’s really saying something. So he seems like a serial monogamist and a standup guy. He’s also very supportive of Cameron, and they’ve each gushed about each other on their social media and to the press. That’s all background to this interview, which just impressed me with how wise and thoughtful he sounds. I mean I don’t agree with him about Cameron Diaz, but he comes across extremely well.

On how the music industry can be hard on artists
My brother and I feel blessed to have survived and still have loving, connected relationships with each other, with our wives, with our family. We feel like: “Hey, there are a lot of artists who might be able to use our experiences.” We’ve been able to withstand a lot of things in the industry because we had each other. We feel protective of other artists.

This is not a business that is set up in favor of artists. It’s important for artists to value themselves—whatever that means. Everyone’s going to take that in a different way. If you don’t value yourself, you will be bought and sold.

On the public’s obsession with celebrity
I think it’s a very unhealthy trend that will eventually be broken when people realize how hollow it is for our minds, it’s very cancerous…it’s like fast food. Fast food companies are trending down, lots of places are going out of business. People figured out: “This is killing us, it’s f-king terrible.” The celebrity obsession is doing the same thing for our minds—it’s very hollow and I think that trend is going to break soon enough.

On how Cameron uses her platform for good
I’m extremely proud of what she uses her platform for. She just released The Longevity Book, and before that she had The Body Book [a lifestyle guide to diet and health], and she spent thousands of dollars doing all the research, to get information to share with women who don’t necessarily have the resources to get that information. She’s a modern day feminist—she wants to change the conversation that’s being had about women and ageing. With The Body Book, she wanted to share all this information she has gathered over the years with women so they can live happy, pain-free lives.

I’m proud of her because of what a light she is in a world where it would be so much easier to use that stage to promote products. But she’s using that platform she has to share positivity. It’s been one of the most inspirational things in my life watching a woman be so courageous…she’s got so much integrity. I’m a lucky guy that I get to experience that.

Kim Kardashian’s diet excludes sugar, sweets, cakes, crackers & white rice

FFN_FF13_KARDASHIAN_K_3252016_52005394

Here are some photos of Kim Kardashian out and about on Friday in LA. This feels like the first time we’ve seen her in months without a long, butt-covering jacket or coat. That’s probably because she’s now lost so much of the pregnancy weight that she’s not afraid of photographers getting a few butt shots. While I respect her choice to not give the paps butt shots when she’s uncomfortable with her body, she’s got to know that she’s just driving up the price, right? Anyway, as Kim told us last week, she’s lost 42 pounds of the 70-pound weight loss goal she set for herself post-pregnancy. I think she looks good, as-is. Meaning, she looks comfortable at this weight and this is pretty much how she looked when she got pregnant with Saint West. But she still wants to lose more weight, and her nutritionist spoke to Glamour about Kim’s diet:

Kim’s nutritionist, Colette Heimowitz, VP of nutrition and education at Atkins Nutritionals, chatted up Redbook and spilled. Kim, who’s losing about two pounds a week, is sticking to 1,800 calories a day—just right for a breastfeeding mama—says Heimowitz, and she chooses those calories carefully: Every meal includes protein, which she pairs with high-fiber foods (we love barley!) and healthy fats (olive oil, avocados). What she’s not eating: “Sugar, sweets, cakes, crackers, white flour, white rice.”

One thing she’s not giving up? Cheese—just a little bit. Heimowitz told Redbook that Kim’s daily diet breaks down to: “four to six ounces of protein, four ounces of cheese, eight to 10 servings of veggies, and two tablespoons of added fat.” (“Added” fat doesn’t include the fat that’s already in the protein and cheese.) “The secret is [to] pick high-fiber carbohydrates that slow the release of sugar into the bloodstream,” Heimowitz told the mag. “[So] instead of white rice you have a little brown rice. Instead of a white potato you could have a yam. And [when you want] dessert, you can make one with Splenda instead of sugar.”

[From Glamour]

Atkins diets are always high in protein, as I think everyone knows by now, so it’s not a surprise that Kim includes protein in every meal. I feel like this cheese-specific diet was tailored for her though, which one would expect if one has an on-call nutritionist. Personally, I would rather give up cheese (gladly) for a baked potato every now and then. Besides that, I don’t really believe Kim has given up sugar, sweets, cakes, crackers, white flour and white rice. I think that’s what her nutritionist has told her to give up and Kim sneaks some cracked or a cupcake every so often. Like at a baby shower she hosted for Chrissy Teigen? Apparently, the baby shower food involved McDonalds and nachos.

Zoe Saldana on her weight loss: ‘I mean it mommies, if I did it you can too’

22nd Annual ELLE Women in Hollywood Awards - Arrivals
For months, Zoe Saldana has been lamenting the fact that she hasn’t lost the minor amount of baby weight she was holding onto after having her twin boys, Bowie and Cy, in November, 2014. In April of this year she wrote that the weight gain from pregnancy was “a very challenging experience,” that “bouncing back feels impossible,” and that “it is slow, painful and frustrating. But it is worth it.”

Then, this September she said thateverything hurts and feels uncomfortable” compared to her pre-pregnancy body and that “I feel bad for those women who are desperate and want to bounce back three months after having a baby… I definitely took a break and trusted that my body was going to bounce back when it was ready. I never wanted to push myself.

Well it’s been a year and Zoe can once again fit back into her Guardians of the Galaxy costume. She posted the following picture to Instagram, along with a bikini pic.

In the past two years I lost 50 lbs and got to my goal weight. I was able to lose it because I got my appendix out and that solved a lot of ongoing health issues I’d had. Plus I had the time and freedom – I work from home and have more time to exercise, and I figured out that if I count calories it’s a lot simpler than eliminating my favorite foods. (I used MyFitnessPal and a food scale. I do emotional eat but once I started counting everything it became easier to control.)

My point is that yes weight loss is achievable by us non-celebrities, and I definitely get the urge to share it and explain how you did it, but I don’t do this unless people ask and I would never presume to tell someone else that “if I can do it all moms can.” Weight loss has to be on people’s own schedule. Zoe knows this as it took her a year. Some women work 9 to 5 and then go home and have to make dinner, care for children, and clean the house. I’m not saying weight loss is impossible for anyone, it’s just that some have it much harder than others.

You would think that Zoe, who complained multiple times that it was tough for her to lose the weight from having twins, would not frame her weight loss this way. If Zoe would have posted that picture and just talked about it on her own terms that would have been fine. I just question why she addressed her post to all mothers, especially when she’s an incredibly privileged celebrity with so many advantages and resources.

On the other hand, maybe she’s talking like this because it was really hard for her and she’s trying to be encouraging. There are just shades of Maria Kang in that post.

LeAnn Rimes dressed up as a Victoria’s Secret Angel for Halloween, of course

FFN_LS_Party_AFP_103015_51893236

Here are some photos of LeAnn Rimes hosting a party for Life & Style. A few things. One, this “costume” is basically just lingerie with wings. Like, I guess she’s supposed to be a Victoria’s Secret Angel, but who does that? Who dresses up like a Victoria’s Secret Angel for Halloween?! Second thing: I wonder if LeAnn hosted this party for L&S for a nice paycheck. Back in July, we heard something about how LeAnn and Eddie have borrowed $350,000 from friends and they haven’t paid it back yet. I would totally believe that LeAnn and Eddie’s finances are in shambles and that LeAnn takes these kinds of gigs (or any kind of gig) just to keep herself and Eddie afloat.

Now, all that being said… LeAnn doesn’t look bad here. Maybe it’s because I haven’t seen photos of her in a while or something, but she looks… good. Slightly different? Like, maybe she got some subtle tweaking? LeAnn spoke to the Daily Mail at this event about how she works out every day. The Mail also refers to her at one point as a “pin up.” Gag. Some highlights:

Why she works out: “I love food and I literally work out so I can eat what I want. Because I love food and wine and I love tequila and that’s what I want. I want to be able to eat and drink.. That’s what it’s about, it’s pretty simple.”

She enjoys her workouts: “I’ve learned to enjoy it. I’ve learned to find workouts that I really enjoy. I do everything from boxing to Pilates. I think it’s about consistency. Really, for me, it’s so hard to work out when I’m on the road because it’s like you’re in a different city every night and you’re trying to find the energy or the time, or whatever it may be. I’ve learned those moments when I really don’t feel like doing it are the moments I have to do it. That’s what keeping healthy is all about. To me it’s consistency. It’s really about getting your butt up when you really don’t want to and doing it. It’s about being healthy, I eat well. I don’t eat bad food. I eat well.”

Moving to a new label: “I was at the same label for 20 years and now I’m moving ahead in a completely new direction and I’m only 33 so that’s still a good thing. I’m very young after being in this business for that long so I’m hoping that this is a brand new start and I’m really excited about it.”

Star: Suki Waterhouse & Bradley Cooper are expecting a mini Cooper

Here’s an Oscar flashback to last year when Bradley Cooper took Suki Waterhouse as his date. Or shall I say “second date.” BCoop’s mom was his first date. Suki wore Marchesa (thanks, Harvey Weinstein). Will Bradley bring Suki to the ceremony this year? I would guess yes, unless she’s busy with work. Suki did come to Bradley’s opening night on Broadway, but she spends a lot of time with her model buddies in London.

Back in September, BCoop gave a bizarre interview where he talked about his next goal, fatherhood. He’s always been career focused, but he turned 40 years old this month. Suki is 23, which could present difficulties. Star printed a story last month about how Bradley wants to get married soon. Suki wasn’t into it. The tabloid called it Bradley’s “birthday meltdown.” I doubt Bradley threw a tantrum over marriage and kids. Star doubled down this week with a follow-up about how “they just found out” a mini-Cooper is on the way:

Sources close to Bradley and Suki say that the 23-year-old beauty recently learned that she’s pregnant with their child — and Bradley, 40, couldn’t be happier. “He’s wanted to be a father for years — it was always so important to him, but it was never the right time or the right person,” said the insider. “Suki is perfect for him, and he couldn’t imagine going on this journey with anyone else.”

Despite their age difference, the insider says, she’s on the same page as Bradley when it comes to settling down and starting a family. “She’s been longing for stability inher life for awhile,” says the insider of Suki, who has complained about her “traveling Gypsy” lifestyle, confessing, “I’m desperate to have a home.” And she sees Bradley as the ideal father for her children. “She’s just as excited about the pregancy as he is.”

[From Star, print edition, February 9, 2015]

This feels like a very fake story. It couldn’t possibly be a plant for the Oscar campaign, right? BCoop has limits when it comes to using his personal life for publicity.

I’m including photos (in the gallery) of Suki looking not-pregnant in New York and London over the past few weeks. For kicks, here are some photos of BCoop and Suki together at Wimbledon in 2014 and 2013. I can never figure out their body language, but they must be happy together.

Star: Giuliana Rancic is dangerously thin, people are concerned

Apart from the photos of Giuliana Rancic at the Golden Globes two weeks ago (above), all of these photos are from 2009 to 2011. Giuliana was thin back then, but she wasn’t as tiny as she is now. Of course in 2011 Giuliana found out that she had breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy following an unsuccessful lumpectomy. Giuliana went through so much battling cancer, and she got right back to work at E! afterwards like a trooper. Then she and Bill welcomed a baby boy via gestational carrier in 2012 and she’s been full speed ever since.

My point is that Giuliana is an overachiever, a fighter and a hard worker and I have some sympathy for what she’s been through. I don’t always see eye to eye with her and I think she’s somewhat superficial (aren’t we all), but that doesn’t mean I’m on board with this narrative about how thin she is. I do see that she’s incredibly tiny, but it makes me uncomfortable when people just say “eat something.” It’s not always that simple, you know? Anyway, Star has a whole story about this, based largely around Internet comments. Here’s some of what they’re reporting, with more in this week’s print edition:

By the time Giuliana changed into a strapless pink Maria Lucia Hohan mermaid gown to interview celebrity arrivals, worried fans were blowing up her Instagram account. “Skin and bones skeleton in a night dress,” wrote one follower.

“People are concerned please take care of yourself!!” another alarmed fan wrote after Giuliana posted a shot of a row of diamond bracelets that were almost falling off her tiny wrist.

“Please eat. I love you but I feel really uncomfortable watching you.” It was a sentiment shared by many, as Giuliana, who’s [sic] thinning frame has long been a concern for friends and fans, now appears to have reached an all-time low.

Health and beauty consultant Alicia Hunter estimates Giuliana’s weight at 98 lbs – way below the 130 to 170 ons experts say a 5’9” woman should carry.

[From Star Magazine, print edition, February 2, 2015]

Some people don’t eat when they’re stressed out. I have the opposite problem, I will eat more, especially snack food. I have to exercise and put everything into MyFitnessPal or I will gain weight just dealing with normal life crap. I do have friends who forget to eat when they’re busy or depressed. They are rare, but they exist. Star points out later in the article that Giuliana used to have a fitness blog where she would write down what she ate. Her recommended diet didn’t even add up to 900 calories a day. A minimum of 1,200 calories is recommended for women. (I’m 5’8″ and will lose weight on 1,200 calories.) So she probably does need to eat more, and I think it’s only human nature to notice that she’s underweight. At what point does it go from concern to body shaming though? I’ll answer my own question, when people assume that she can just eat something and gain weight. We don’t know what’s going on with her.

I checked Giuliana’s twitter and Instagram and she’s shilling her wine and promoting her upcoming memoir. Right now she’s on vacation in Mexico. I just got reminded of when she tried to do a shot with Clooney at the Globes. Awkward.
