Duchess Kate repeats a red Catherine Walker ensemble: fab or drab?

RED HEELS!!!!!!

Duchess Kate is wearing red heels! No wedges of doom. No nude pumps. No beige stilettos. She’s wearing honest-to-God red heels! And they’re good, aren’t they? I also have to say, I’ve always had a great deal of affection for Kate in red. She wears a lot of blue, probably because she A) thinks blue is her signature color and B) wants everything to match Big Blue, her sapphire engagement ring. But red looks amazing on her and she wears it too infrequently.

These photos are from yesterday’s Order of the Garter ceremony at Windsor Castle, William and Kate’s fourth public outing in as many days. Kate’s Catherine Walker dress and coat were repeats, but I actually didn’t remember them. She wore this ensemble for the first time in 2011, during her first royal tour to Canada. She actually styled it differently this time too – she wore her hair back and she wore a rather fancy hat. She accessorized with the same diamond drop earrings that she wore for her wedding (purchased as a gift by her parents), a silver pendant (which she has been wearing a lot lately) and an Art Deco-ish bracelet, which we’ve seen before. I’m totally fine with the whole look. And I’ll say again: she should seriously consider adding more red pieces to her wardrobe. And just say no to nude heels!

Meanwhile, Vanity Fair reports that William and Kate will be stopping by the Royal Ascot this week “much to the Queen’s delight.”

After a spectacular turn out for the Queen’s 90th birthday over the weekend, the royals will be out in full force again this week to celebrate Royal Ascot. Royal Watch has learned that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will make their debut at the annual race meet/high-society outing in Berkshire, much to the Queen’s delight. In the past, William and Kate have always turned down offers to join the Queen and her guests in the Royal Enclosure, but this year they are turning out as a birthday surprise for the Queen, who has attended every Royal Meeting at the Ascot during her reign.

“They know how much Ascot means to the Queen and they will be there for one day this week,” says a source about the event, which commences Tuesday. “They will enjoy an afternoon in the royal box with Her Majesty.”

What’s interesting to me is that the Queen has requested their presence apparently multiple times over the past five years and they were always too “busy,” I suppose? I always imagined that when the Queen asks you to go somewhere, it’s not a request, it’s an order. However will William and Kate recuperate from this harried work schedule? I mean, they’ll be doing five events in one week! That’s a lot of keen-ness.

Duchess Kate repeats a nautical McQueen, flirts with Sir Ben Ainslie

It’s time for a flurry of wiglet adjusting and crotch clutching! Yes, the Duchess of Cambridge did a solo event today in Portsmouth to visit one of her favorite patronages, the 1851 Trust. And that means she got to spend time with hottie Sir Ben Ainslie. Everyone thinks/jokes about Kate’s crush on Ainslie. I do think that she seems particularly girlish and smiley around him, so take that as you will.

For today’s event, Kate repeated a nautical-themed (she LOVES theme dressing!) Alexander McQueen look that we saw back in 2011, when she was newly married. The first time she wore this, she paired it with darkly lined eyes and big, bouncy curls. All to visit people who had been affected by the London riots. The nautical-themed ensemble seemed inappropriate then, but it’s very appropriate now. After all, the 1851 Trust is all about sailing and boats and such. So, big gold buttons and navy and cream.

Meanwhile, William did a solo event earlier this week and most people would have just ignored him except that he dropped a piece of news about his kids. He spoke to some people at the event and he said that he was spending his time looking for schools for George. This set off a flurry of speculation about which primary school George would be sent to and whether it would be public or private, or in London or Norfolk. No one knows anything, but the Daily Mail has a list of potential candidates. I’ll make a prediction right now: I believe Will and Kate will really try to send George to school in Norfolk, not London. We’ll see if they’re allowed to remain in Norfolk much longer though. William’s contract with the EAAA runs out next year, and after that, the expectation will be that the family should move back to London.

Alicia Vikander cast as the new, rebooted Lara Croft: great choice or meh?

The last time we heard anything about the reboot of the Lara Croft franchise, it was last month, when we learned that Daisy Ridley was in talks to play Lara. The reboot, we heard, would focus on Lara’s earlier years, her college-student years, before she became the buxom Tomb Raider played by Angelina Jolie. Daisy is 24 years old, and while petite, would have been able to handle the physicality of the role. But producers decided to go with someone else: 27-year-old Alicia Vikander, a Swede. Vikander is fresh off the awards season, and this is the first role she’s landed since winning the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for The Danish Girl. Vikander also landed a supporting role in Jason Bourne, which filmed late last year and early this year, but I don’t think her part was very physical? I’m just saying… Vikander is a veteran of costume dramas, not physical action work. But I guess she impressed producers.

Also… The Light Between Oceans got pushed back for a fall release? I wonder if a lot of people want TLBO to just disappear. Given the absolutely awful source book, the movie was never going to be good.

Kelly Ripa ‘livid’ Michael Strahan left without telling her, she hasn’t returned

Michael Strahan has co-hosted Live! with Kelly Ripa for nearly four years now. Kelly has been on the show for fifteen, since Kathy Lee Gifford left and she co-hosted with Regis Philbin, who retired in 2011. (He’s still kicking at 84, I just checked.) So you would think that Kelly would be one of the first people to learn that her longterm co-host was leaving the show to join Good Morning America. According to outlets including TMZ, E!, and People that wasn’t the case and Ripa found out via a memo to the entire network like everyone else. No one at her workplace, not even Strahan, gave her a heads up and she was understandably “livid.” According to E! Strahan couldn’t tell Ripa because network execs told him not to.

About an hour after LIVE! With Kelly and Michael aired Tuesday, an internal memo at ABC revealed he would be leaving the show by summer’s end to work on Good Morning America full-time. His co-host, Kelly Ripa, did not receive a heads up. In fact, E! News has learned that executives broke the news to her just after the show finished taping—around the same time everyone else first heard about it. “She was livid,” a source says exclusively. “It wasn’t pretty.”

Strahan joined Ripa and others in the meeting. “He wanted to be there. He didn’t have to be, but he didn’t want to have her hear it and not be there,” the source says. “He tried to do the stand up thing.” Strahan, who replaced Regis Philbin in 2012, has been a correspondent on ABC’s Good Morning America since 2014. When executives decided to move him to the news show full-time, they intentionally kept Ripa and others key staff members in the dark to prevent leaks. “That was a network decision,” the source says, adding that it was a carefully executed plan. “It wasn’t an overnight decision and took some time to put it in place.”

Strahan didn’t have a say in the matter.

“He’s not the boss,” the source tells E! News. “He is an employee of the network.”

That’s a weak excuse that network execs they were worried about leaks. They could have at least told Kelly, that would have only been fair. People confirms E!’s version of events and adds that Kelly “went crazy.”

TMZ is reporting that while it’s true that Strahan was under orders not to tell Ripa, “Kelly and Michael don’t get along” and Ripa feels like “he’s disrespectful to her and is full of himself.” In an earlier story, TMZ revealed that ABC is considering canceling Live and adding a third hour to Good Morning America, which is facing stiff competition from The Today Show.

Ripa did not host Live! on Wednesday and was replaced by Ana Gasteyer. Sources tell US Magazine that Ripa took a sick day. Strahan had some nice things to say about her, and about his time on Live, at the end of the show, but who knows if he’s paying lip service.

People has a source close to Strahan who says that “He very much wanted to do the right thing” by telling “her in person and [giving] her months notice” but that he couldn’t. Strahan is said to be “hurt by her reaction” and “the very public way she’s handling this.” Their source added “You can’t not show up for work. If you’re going to have a meltdown you don’t do it publicly.” It’s not public! Kelly didn’t show up for work. She didn’t tweet or Instagram anything. She may have gotten mad at work but she didn’t make her response public, she just took time off, as is her right.

It looks like this show is about to get canceled and like they put off telling Ripa until it was absolutely necessary. People is reporting that it’s unknown when Kelly will return to the show. A source tells them that Kelly plans to stay out this entire week. Additional stories have come out stating that Kelly is on a 20th anniversary vacation with her family and husband, Mark Consuelos, in Turks and Caicos. Apparently the trip was planned already and she was supposed to be out on Friday and Monday, but left early when she was blindsided by the news of Strahan leaving the show.

Eva Mendes & Ryan Gosling: Expecting Second Child!

Congratulations are in order for Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling.

The couple are expecting their second child together, according to Us Weekly, which reported that “multiple sources” have confirmed the news.

Thus far, there’s no word on how far along she is in her pregnancy or the sex of the baby.

Mendes has been taking a break from the spotlight, so there’s not even a pic of the bump to comment on.

The genetically blessed couple have been dating since 2011, after they met on the set of The Place Beyond the Pines.

They welcomed their first baby, Esmerelda Amada, in 2014.

During Mendes’ first pregnancy, the pair kept the baby news secret for some time. But the laws of basic biology eventually precluded them from hiding it for too long.

Now that little Esmerelda is here, the couple couldn’t be happier.

“She and Ryan are just in awe of this beautiful person they created,” a source close to Mendes told People. “It’s a really special time for them.”

And while breakup rumors have flitted about as they do with every celebrity couple, Gosling has done nothing but gush over his longtime love.

“I know that I’m with the person I’m supposed to be with,” he told HELLO! last December.

When asked what he looks for in a mate, he gave a response that left half the female population in a mournful search for Ben & Jerry’s and Xanax.

“That she’s Eva Mendes,” Gosling said. “There’s nothing else I’m looking for.”

And that’s a freaking leading man for you.

Mads Mikkelsen in his villain costume for ‘Doctor Strange’: would you hit it?

On Sunday, we covered the first photos we had of Benedict Cumberbatch and Chiwetel Ejiofor filming Doctor Strange in NYC. It felt like the collective reaction to the pics was “meh,” which is sad because Doctor Strange is sort of a big deal in the Marvel universe. Meaning, Marvel put a lot of time and money into finding the right Doctor Strange, and they’ve already been filming it for months, at a likely exorbitant cost. The film comes out in November and Marvel really, really needs people to be excited about it. I fear all the Marvel nerds are more geared up for Captain America: Civil War. But maybe they’ll excited about Strange whenever we get a trailer.

Anyway, these are more photos from the set. They filmed throughout the weekend and it looked like the same sequence, something involving Chiwetel and Benedict running around pretending to shoot magical beams of Strange Magic. We also got some photos of Mads Mikkelsen, who is reportedly playing the villain or a villain. Check out his crazy eye makeup! So, between Mads, Benedict and Chiwetel, who would you rather? That’s such a tough call, isn’t it? How about Marry, Screw, Kill: Chiwetel, Bendy and Mads. Marry Chiwetel. Screw Bendy. And kill Mads?

Ingrid Seward: William & Kate are ‘a rich, increasingly spoiled couple’

Ingrid Seward is a prominent royal writer, biographer and editor in the UK. She’s often called in by American publications to explain royal traditions or provide sugary quotes about the greatness of the Queen, the Prince of Wales or the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Like, People Magazine interviews her all the time and often throws in some of her quotes in pieces about the Cambridges. She’s known as a more conservative and pro-monarchy royal writer. So this is sort of amazing – Ingrid Seward wrote a column in the Mail on Sunday about the Cambridges’ janky media strategy and just what a boneheaded idea it was for Kate to skip out on the Irish Guards on St. Patrick’s Day. If even Seward feels bold enough to issue a public smackdown, you know there are issues.

The rest of Seward’s piece is a comparison of the Cambridges to the older royals, with Seward even saying that the Duchess of Cornwall understands the royal role so much better than William and Kate. Charles gets compliments as well for always putting duty first, for working so hard, etc. As I said, if someone like Seward is throwing down some heavy criticism of William and Kate, you know it’s bad. You know what I’m starting to wonder? I’m quietly developing a theory that all of this criticism might work in William’s favor in one particular way – he’ll use this as an excuse to quit his part-time EAAA job, which clearly already bores him to tears. He’ll say he has to quit the EAAA because something something criticism and his royal role. Then he’ll be on to a new scheme to avoid royal work.

Oh, and the Sunday Express ran an interesting piece about Kate skipping out on the Irish Guards too – go here to read. Apparently, Kensington Palace is now claiming that they informed the Irish Guards “months” ago that Kate would not be handing out shamrocks this year. And somehow she knew months ago that she would need that day to prioritize her children? It’s a weird explanation.
