Katherine Heigl: ‘I absolutely owe anyone an apology I unwittingly offended’

wenn23739823

Kitty litter spokeswoman Katherine Heigl would like to explain why she shouldn’t have said all of the terrible things she’s said. Heigl appeared on Howard Stern’s show on Wednesday – perhaps to shill kitty litter? – and she and Stern ended up getting into EVERYTHING. It would involve about a million links, so perhaps it’s best to glance through our Heigl archives from the past, say, seven years. Or more. She’s been a pill for the better part of a decade and there are dozens of instances of her unpleasant attitude, diva behavior and general sourness. And what’s funny is that Howard Stern basically asked her about all of it.

On criticizing Knocked Up after it made her a star: “That was dumb. I liked the movie a lot. I just didn’t like me. She was kind of like, she was so judgmental and kind of uptight and controlling and all these things and I really went with it while we were doing it, and a lot of it, Judd allows everyone to be very free and improvise and whatever and afterwards, I was like, ‘Why is that where I went with this? What an a–hole she is!’ It was, again, one of those situations, it was a huge opportunity for me. I was being interviewed for Vanity Fair. Like, I was on the cover of Vanity Fair, it was a huge big deal for me. And the journalist…just said, ‘You know a lot of women felt it was a little sexist’ so then I felt obligated to answer that and so I tried in my very sort of ungracious way to answer why I felt that it maybe was a little.”

She admits she didn’t even call Judd Apatow to apologize: “I probably should’ve [called them]. But what I did was very, I did it publicly instead and kind of tried to say, look, this was not what I meant and this was an incredible experience for me and they were incredibly good to me on this movie, so I did not mean to s–t on them at all. I’ve thought about like, writing a note. I feel embarrassed. I don’t want it to feel insincere on any level.”

Why she announced that she was withdrawing her name from Emmy consideration in 2008: “I didn’t feel good about my performance. There was a part of me that thought, because I had won the year before, that I needed juicy, dramatic, emotional material and I just didn’t have that that season… I went in [to speak to Shonda Rhimes] ’cause I was really embarrassed. So I went in to Shonda and said, ‘I’m so sorry. That wasn’t cool. I should not have said that’…I shouldn’t have said anything publicly but at the time, I didn’t think anybody would notice. I didn’t know that journalists would see who submitted and who didn’t. I just quietly didn’t submit and then it became a story and then I felt I was obligated to make my statement and ‘shut up, Katie.’”

She owes apologies to a lot of people: “I absolutely owe anyone an apology I unwittingly offended or disrespected. I get it. It was an immature dumbass moment.”

She started going to therapy: “I started going because of the scrutiny – and I was not handling it well. I was feeling completely like the biggest piece of s— on the bottom of your shoe. I was really struggling with it and how to not take it all really personally.”

She found herself acting timidly on sets: “I was like, ‘This is nonsense. Stop it. Get some help and own your voice.’ “

[From E! News and People]

Just my opinion: she’s still full of sh-t. You can hear the bullsh-t and lies and inadvertent truths dripping off these quotes. “…That I needed juicy, dramatic, emotional material and I just didn’t have that that season…” Meaning she still feels like she was fundamentally justified for throwing the writers under the bus. Meaning she still feels like her material was sub-par and it was her duty to say so publicly. And then: “I’ve thought about like, writing a note. I feel embarrassed. I don’t want it to feel insincere on any level.” Why would it be “insincere,” Heigl? Because you would just be apologizing with an eye-roll? Because she’s still pissed off that people are still disgusted by how many times she “unwittingly” offended and disrespected them.

Sarah McLachlan can’t watch her ASPCA ads: ‘it just kills me’

My Facebook feed is full of bittersweet stories of animals who were abandoned and abused but go on to live wonderful lives with humans who spoil and adore them. My friends and especially family just love animals. I also subscribe to some “save these animals from euthanasia” pages because somehow I think I might be able to help. So as an animal lover it’s excruciatingly hard for me watch those ASPCA commercials starring Canadian singer Sarah McLachlan. Those sweet cats and dogs, some with visible injuries, look up at you from their shelter cages with their sad hopeful eyes and you just want to cuddle, bathe and feed them. You wonder which ones made it out alive as the music swells. Did that German Shepherd get to sit at someone’s feet by a roaring fire or did he live out his short life in the cold, sterile environment of the local shelter?

In order to save you from bawling during what should be a happy holiday season, I’m not going to embed any of the videos here or mention the song lyrics. If you want to see them, links follow. The one you’re thinking of came out in 2006 and two others which came out in 2008.

It turns out that Sarah McLachlan can’t watch the videos either. In a recent interview with Makers, she said that she doesn’t watch them, but that she often gets recognized for starring in the PSAs, particularly when they were in circulation.

Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt took Vivienne & Knox to a NYC Barnes & Noble

Yesterday, I wrote this about Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt: “Every time they step onto a red carpet, or step out for a pap stroll, every single blog and magazine in the world will run the photos. Why spend money on advertising when you can get all of it for free?” Lo and behold, Brad and Angelina have a movie to promote and they stepped out in New York on Tuesday afternoon for a nice family pap stroll. These photos are already all over the blogs and news outlets. Every time Angelina and/or Brad step out with their kids, it’s a headline. So… seriously, why spend the money on commercials for By the Sea?

Anyway, Angelina and Brad took their two youngest children, twins Vivienne and Knox, out to Barnes & Noble in Manhattan. Angelina and Brad don’t seem like the kinds of parents who get their kids the big, expensive toys every other month – most of the time, when we see the kids out with their parents, they’re going to a book store or an arts & crafts store or maybe to a fast food joint. For this trip, they seemed to have loaded up on books too – they left with at least three bags full of stuff. As for Vivienne and Knox… these kids are so cute. I like that Vivienne has permanent bedhead, like she always looks like she just woke up from a nap. Knox seems very quiet, but like a deep thinker. And Knox is getting more strawberry blonde/gingery as he gets older too!

Last night, Angelina and Brad walked the the red carpet for a screening of By the Sea, their first red carpet together since… the Unbroken premiere in Sydney, last year, I think? We’ll have those photos in a separate post, so please no threadjacking. Tomorrow night, they’ll be in LA for the AFI Fest premiere, and I’m excited to see what Angelina will wear (ten bucks says it will be a ‘70s style sack dress) and how much energy they bring to shilling their film. What I forgot was that Brad’s film The Big Short will also be premiering at the AFI Fest days later. Will Angelina walk that carpet too? Hm. Variety also did a rundown of how the AFI Fest has become a mixed bag of forgotten films and awards contenders, with no real rhyme or reason – go here to read.

On becoming famous thanks to her looks and aging in Hollywood:

‘I don’t really feel like I want to chase youth. I want to get old. I want to experience all the seasons of my life. I just don’t want to be afraid of it. And I think in this industry you’re surrounded by a lot of fear of getting older and fear of your looks leaving you. And I thought, “Well, I’m lucky then, because I never really felt that great looking”.

‘I felt like I could have fun. I felt like I could be sexy. I could be provocative and I could use my image to get attention for things I cared about.’

‘I’ve just signed with Next Modelling agency for commercials and appearances. That is funny. I’ve never felt pretty enough to be a model. I think I’ve provoked feelings with how I look. But not as a beauty but as a mischievous little rascal! I’ve always been a tomboy. That was never the first thing on my list. My mum always told me beauty comes from within. And I know that’s maybe a cliché, but I do believe that. And I think that’s what lasts forever.’

… says 47 year-old Pamela.

Miles Teller on JK Simmons’ work: ‘I’ve seen like five minutes of a lot of s—t’

MIS-000239

Miles Teller is still happening, you guys. I can’t help it! He’s promoting Whiplash and everyone loves the film, so Miles is still doing interviews. He’s already thrown shade at Divergent, John Cusack’s career and his Whiplash costar J.K. Simmons. Who’s next? Well, I made my way through Miles’ new Yahoo Movies interview and it’s like he’s doubling-down on all of the previous shade and then some. You can read the full piece here. Some highlights:

The push-back from his candid interviews: “In all my interviews, I am very candid. I don’t censor myself, but also I’m very proud of the career I have. I’m not a f—king bad person. I don’t think I’m better than anybody so I don’t really worry too much about what comes out of my mouth.”

Miles on his costar JK Simmons: “I’ve never seen him in anything. I never saw Juno. I’ve seen like five minutes of a lot of s—t. I know him from the Farmers Insurance commercials. Oh, [and] I saw him in Spider-Man.”

How he cries on camera: “I think about the Phillies, and the season that they’re having, and it just pours out. They were pretty bad this year and last year, pretty dogs—t.”

His friend Shailene Woodley claims she can’t get ahold of him: “Yeah. That’s because she doesn’t have a phone and she lives in a tree. I was just talking to her earlier. She talks to me for a little bit, then she’ll just f—king disappear.”

Whether he’s adopted a “one for them, one for me” strategy with films: “No, because honestly, I don’t feel like I’ve ever done a “one for them” type of film. For me, it’s always about the script and the people I want to work with. I’ve been offered literally a million dollars to do a s—tty script, and I have not done it. You think about it for a second, but I think you want to be very precious with your résumé, and the choices you make, you should be able to defend them.”

Talking about money: “People don’t ever want you to talk about money if you’re an actor, because they just assume you’re making tons and tons of money. For The Spectacular Now, [I made] literally, like, 6 grand. For Whiplash, [I made] literally, like, a couple thousand dollars — not even $10,000. So for me to make what somebody with a college degree makes, I would have to make nine Spectacular Nows a year. I love doing independent films, because you have more control of your character. Yet as soon as you start doing a lot of studio films, it’s like, “Oh, you’re selling out.” So it’s a fine line there. “

He’s a proper actor: “Yeah. I didn’t want to make it this whole generational thing, because it can be for any generation… I got my theater training up in New York. I went to school for it. And I think a lot of people want this kind of instant gratification, this Millennial thing. It’s like, you make a YouTube video, and then if you get enough views, you can get a TV show out of it, and all this reality television stuff. For me, all that stuff wasn’t around and yeah, I think acting is absolutely a very rich craft, and it should be something that should be practiced. It’s not something where you can just kind of go and f—king wing it. I think you should be aware other actors, and the stuff that’s come before you, and what you want to do. I think they should take it very seriously.

[From Yahoo]

At Yahoo, there’s an extremely lengthy conversation about what went down with his W Magazine interview, the same one where he threw shade at Divergent and said he felt “dead inside.” In this interview, he goes back and forth between saying he was misquoted and saying that W Mag took his comments out of context. It’s pretty clear that he said what he said to W and he’s still dealing with some fallout from it, but I actually give him props for trying to talk his way out of it. And honestly, considering the heap of BS that comes out of this kid’s mouth, I don’t even think his Divergent shade was all that bad. I’m personally more offended that he’s still telling people that he barely knows JK Simmons’ filmography whatsoever while just a few minutes later, he’s talking about the importance of knowing other actors’ filmography. This kid’s a punk.

Miles Teller only knew costar JK Simmons from his Farmers Insurance ads

MIS-000240

Ha, Miles Teller got a mountain of (well-deserved) hate for his New York Times interview. I keep telling you, this guy is cocky. He’s the bro who will tell you how great he is, even if it means disrespecting John Cusack’s career (blasphemy!). Anyway, Miles is still promoting Whiplash, which critics keep saying is one of the sleeper awards-bait films this year. Everyone believe JK Simmons is going to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as a maniacal, abusive music instructor. So what did Miles think of the amazing JK Simmons when they first met? Ugh, this kid didn’t even know who he was. Seriously. Some highlights from Miles Teller’s Vulture interview:

Vulture: Have you ever dealt with a director who really got in your head, like J.K.’s character does to you in Whiplash, and tried to screw with you in order to elicit a better performance?
Teller:
Yeah, I’ve had directors who think they need to do tricks and manipulate you. I don’t work that way. I’m not a dog — you don’t need to show me something shiny to get me to look up on that line. My favorite directors are people like Damien [Chazelle] who are very collaborative and respect what you do but will give you a different way of thinking about the scene, as opposed to just telling you to squint on a line or move your eyebrows during this word. That kind of micromanaging can get frustrating for me because as an actor, you want to suspend your disbelief. You want to feel like you’re in that moment; you don’t want to remind yourself that it’s fake.

Vulture: Before he got the funding to make Whiplash into a feature film, Damien shot one of the centerpiece scenes as a short film, with J.K. Simmons and another actor in your role. Did you ever watch the short, which was a big film-festival hit?
Teller:
They gave it to me, but I did the movie purely based on the script. I knew who J.K. was, but honestly, I knew J.K. because of the Farmers Insurance commercials. Actually, I thought those were for State Farm, and he corrected me, “Those were Farmers Insurance, Miles.”

Vulture: He was also the voice of the yellow M&M, let’s not forget.
Teller:
Is he? Good for him, he’s got a great voice. But yeah, they sent me the short film and I didn’t watch it. I didn’t want to see anybody else playing my part. It was the same thing when I did Footloose, I never saw the original film. I just trusted Damien, although I didn’t even meet him for the first time until I’d already signed for it.

Vulture: You and the actors you’ve been working with lately — Shailene Woodley, Michael B. Jordan, Ansel Elgort — are now all starting to blow up. Is there any sense of how to prepare for the even bigger fame that lies ahead?
Teller:
I take things project to project. If people based how good they were as an actor on how many Twitter followers they have — when your popularity is that far ahead of your résumé — then you’re gonna get into trouble. The most important thing about my work is trying to get better. That’s really the only thing I’m interested in at this point.

[From Vulture]

I know a lot of you abandoned Miles when he threw shade at John Cusack, but this is my limit: how can you call yourself an actor in this day and age and NOT know JK Simmons, one of the greatest character actors of the past two decades? How can you even have a passing interest in film and television and never come across a JK Simmons performance? Look at JK Simmons’ IMDB. The Closer. Juno. The original Spider-Man movies. Up In the Air. Burn After Reading. And he’s guest-starred on pretty much every TV show in the past twenty years. And Miles Teller only knew him from the Farmers Insurance commercials. Okay, I’m done with Miles. DONE!

Nicholas Hoult’s villainous new Jaguar commercials: awkward or amazing?

Nicholas Hoult

Nicholas Hoult appears in some new commercials for Jaguar. He works it hard, letting “Jag-u-ar” roll off his tongue in a saucy British accent. Nick seems like a strange, low-profile choice for a luxury car company. He’s a lot more popular in the UK than stateside. Nick successfully pairs a posh appearance with an everyman persona. He joins the likes of Tom Hiddleston in Jaguar’s “British villains” ad campaign.

Nick plays the “boy genius” mastermind behind the supervillains’ operation in these ads. He gets to say things like “A villian is only as good — or should I say, as bad — as the technology at his fingertips” and “Behind every cunning plan, there’s a brilliant mind.” Not to mention “The devil is in the detail.” These are all phrases that we’ve heard before in various contexts, but Nick polishes the words up quite nicely. Observe.

He looks good and sounds great. I’m predisposed to love this ad campaign because I want good things for Nick. His ex-girlfriend made out with Chris Martin during a Kings of Leon concert (gag) last Friday. She’s dating a guy who just bought a home across the street from his ex, which isn’t weird at all. Okay, it’s weird. Very weird.

What isn’t weird? Nick Hoult waxing rhapsodic about the wonders of a climatic development chamber. Nick > Coldplay. There, I called it.
