Taylor Swift wore a tartan Dior to the VMAs & picked up seven awards

Were you expecting Taylor Swift to turn up at last night’s MTV VMAs? I was not. But she was one of the last ones to walk the VMA red carpet, and she dashed inside to win one of the first awards of the evening. In total, Taylor picked up seven VMAs, including awards for Song of the Summer (nope), Video of the Year, Artist of the Year, Best Collab and Best Pop. VOTY, SOTS and Collab were all given to “Fortnight” featuring Post Malone, her first single from The Tortured Poets Department. Like… even if you want to give it VOTY, there is absolutely no way that “Fortnight” was the Song of the Summer. None.

Taylor wore this Westwood-coded Dior look, a black-and-yellow tartan with a mullet skirt and bustier. People Mag thought her look was “Reputation-coded,” because I guess Swifties are still waiting for Reputation (Taylor’s Version). Y’all have been talking about the snake album for the better part of two years. I hope y’all get it after all this time. Seeing Taylor try to pull off a harder-edge look is always amusing to me though – like, she still looks like a Disney princess, even with the boots and punk-lite ensemble.

Tay also made this VMA appearance not even 24 hours after she endorsed the Harris-Walz ticket. Taylor had been dominating headlines in the political world throughout the day Wednesday, and much of it was good news for her. In her Instagram post endorsement, Taylor included a link to vote.gov. The US GSA announced yesterday that Taylor’s post drove over 337,000 visitors to the site.

Last thing: While Travis Kelce did not attend the VMAs, Taylor did give a shout-out to, in her words, “my boyfriend.”

Katy Perry wore Who Decides War to the VMAs: shipwrecked chic or just wrecked?

In recent months, it does feel like the culture has moved past the need for Katy Perry. No disrespect to her years of pop dominance, but something has fundamentally shifted and what she’s selling currently, no one is buying. And yet, she keeps trying to sell it to us! Katy was invited to last night’s VMAs and she was honored with the Video Vanguard Award. Meaning, she performed a medley of her hit songs, then snuck in a couple of her songs (which everyone hates). If you love sh-t written and produced by Dr. Luke, this was the medley for you.

Before her performance, Katy walked the carpet with her partner Orlando Bloom. She did the “wetlook/shipwrecked” style which Kim Kardashian keeps trying to bring back. Katy’s carpet look was a fresh-from-NYFW piece from Who Decides War’s Spring 2025 collection. It looks like wannabe Alexander McQueen, right? And dousing herself in baby oil was probably bad for the fabric.

Here are more photos from last night’s MTV VMAs. The VMAs got a really good turnout, all things considered. They got Taylor Swift to show up, and they got Megan Thee Stallion to host. Personally, I think Megan is too famous to host the VMAs, but she had fun with it and she changed her look throughout the show (she even did a Britney Spears throwback). For the carpet, Megan wore this striking black gown which I don’t have ID for. Meg’s bob was bobbin’ too. Not only did she host & do all of those costume changes, she also performed a medley of some recent hits:

Sabrina Carpenter also performed a medley of her songs too. Sabrina turned up on the red carpet wearing a vintage Bob Mackie – if this looks familiar, it’s because Madonna wore the same dress to the 1991 Oscars.

GloRilla performed too – the performances actually sounded good with the sound quality because… most of these people were lip syncing. I’m obsessed with “TGIF” though and I love that Glo is having such a huge, breakout year.

Speaking of breakout years, I guess everyone is obsessed with Chappell Roan these days. There are some “industry plant” rumors floating around and I have no idea if there’s anything to that, but there is a certain vibe to her which I can’t quite put my finger on. “Good Luck Babe” is definitely her best song, and her performance was pretty cool. She styled everything like she was Joan d’Arc?

For years now, the MTV VMAs and Movie Awards have been in the depths of hell – like, no A-listers were showing up to those events, and it was just an endless parade of C-listers and reality stars. I figured this year’s VMAs would be the same, but MTV somehow got a bunch of big-name people to come out. Of course, I kind of think the only reason Taylor Swift went to the VMAs is because MTV guaranteed that Taylor would sweep, which is what happened – she won NINE VMAs this year. For the red carpet, Taylor wore Versace… you guys, this dress is so bad. Like, WTF? Who picked this out for Taylor? And who styled her?

Here’s Olivia Rodrigo in a great Ludovic de Saint Sernin dress. So pretty.

Shakira picked up the MTV Video Vanguard Award, and she wore Versace on the carpet (and on stage). I love how sparkles and metallics are back this year!

Cardi B wore the “Dilara Findikoglu hair clip dress,” a dress made out of hundreds of hair clips. She looked cool.

Selena Gomez wore this red Oscar de la Renta dress. Eh, kind of phoned it in?

Here are some photos of Megan Thee Stallion at last night’s MTV VMAs. Her dress on the red carpet was Brandon Maxwell and she looked so good, although I kind of think the diamond choker is a tad too much. Still, it’s Megan and she looks great. There was a big viral moment during the VMAs, because the producers will splice in backstage footage with what’s happening in the awards show. Backstage, Megan was getting ready to go on stage and Justin Timberlake passed by. Without context or sound, it appeared as if Justin and Megan got into a fight, or like she was bitching him out over something.

I agree that it looks like they were getting into something, but Megan’s people quickly went to several outlets to correct the record and declare that there was “zero fight” – apparently, Megan and JT had never met before, and he said something along the lines of “It’s so nice to meet you.” Megan responded with “No, no this don’t count, this don’t count. We gotta meet proper.” Their exchange was not a “fight,” sources insist and instead it was a “very cute” exchange between celebrities. One eyewitness told Variety: “Meg loves Justin. She was saying ‘No, no, no, we’ve never met before.’ It was their first time meeting and she was excited.” Beef quashed!

Taylor Swift wore Oscar de la Renta to the VMAs & announced a new album

Taylor Swift made a “surprise” appearance on last night’s VMA black carpet. She posed for photos on the carpet, she stayed for the entire VMA show and she accepted a VMA from Nicki Minaj for Video of the Year for her 10-minute version of “All Too Well,” which she directed. Tay wore this bejeweled Oscar de la Renta dress which is cool but also kind of… dated in a way? It looks nice on her, but I feel like I saw versions of this dress a million times a decade ago. The big styling news was not her dress but her hair – Taylor has been doing thick, straight bangs for several years now but last night, her stylist attempted some kind of “side-swept bangs” look. Someone said her bangs looked like Daphne Bridgerton’s and now I can’t unsee it.

So, all in all, it was worth it for Taylor to show up at the VMAs simply to accept the biggest prize, Video of the Year, correct? No, Taylor had something else up her diamond-encrusted sleeve. She’s apparently recorded a completely new album called Midnights. She teased the announcement in her Video of the Year speech, then she posted the announcement on her social media… at midnight. It’s coming out on October 21. If you told me that Midnights was ready months ago and Taylor decided to push the release back to give Adele and Beyonce leeway, I would believe you (even though no one is talking about Adele’s album at this point).

2021 MTV Video Music Awards


My favorite interview during the VMAs preshow last night was sisters Chloe and Halle Bailey. Chloe has a solo career now and Halle is starring in the new live action Little Mermaid movie, out next year. They just seemed so proud and supportive of each other. Halle introduced Chloe’s performance of “Have Mercy,” which was incredible. Chloe can MOVE. We’ll be seeing a lot more of both of them. Chloe is wearing Marni. This looks like tin foil to me and I’m confused by the framed spoon necklace but she was happy in it. Plus it’s on brand for MTV! This is a moon man dress.

Halle was looking amazing in a white cutout Monot gown. She said it was comfortable too. Just wow.


2021 MTV Video Music Awards

Kacey Musgraves was in Valentino Fall 2021. I should have put this dress with Doja Cat’s post because the color mixing was similar to Doja’s look. It’s a little weird with the hat, but I love Kacey and this is the VMAs. Kacey performed “star crossed,” a deep and moving song about her divorce. Now I want to listen to her new album.

Billy Porter was in this metallic gold Christian Siriano suit that many outlets pointed out looked like the iconic MTV moon person. I can’t remember whom he introduced last night but he talked about his Black boy joy not being dimmed and I appreciated that. Porter always brings the fashion drama and I can’t wait to see what he wears tonight!
