David Bowie Ellen Degeneres Margaret Cho

Margaret Cho: Ellen DeGeneres ‘would act like we just met’ despite us going way back

Receipts came for Ellen DeGeneres in a big way in 2020. Her years of being out of touch, dismissive, rude, etc, were exposed, and people acknowledged that the atmosphere of casual cruelty she fostered at her eponymous talk show was an open secret in Hollywood. Not helping matters was the fact that Ellen had crafted her on screen personality as the “Be Kind” lady. So The Ellen DeGeneres Show ended in 2022 with a whimper instead of a dance party, and although Ellen attempted a comeback in stand up last year, people weren’t really buying what she was selling. (In fact, the only work I’ve seen Ellen do lately are the Kind Science skincare infomercials.) Now, several years after the fallout, actress/comedian Margaret Cho is chiming in with her Ellen experiences, of which she had plenty, considering Margaret opened for Ellen when they were both working the comedy club circuit in the 80s. That shared history made it extra awkward decades later when Margaret would appear on Ellen’s show… and Ellen would act like they’d never met.

Margaret Cho won’t be sending Ellen DeGeneres a friendship basket anytime soon.

The comedian says the former talk show host acted as if they were strangers when she’d make appearances on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, despite the fact that they were both working in the comedy circuit in their early days in the 1980s.

“Ellen was really weird and not nice to me for most of my career,” Cho revealed on a new episode of The Kelly Mantle Show.

She went on to explain how the two knew each other. “I opened for her in the 1980s, when she was a headliner in comedy clubs. Later, when I would do her talk show in the 2000s, she would act like we just met.”

Cho then quipped, “And I’m like, ‘Bitch, what?’ That’s weird. We go way back. It’s so creepy and weird.”

The actress and comic then recalled a specific incident that stuck with her when another guest praised her on DeGeneres’ talk show. Cho had attended a David Bowie concert dressed in what she described as a “Chinese emperor outfit,” and the next day, while visiting the show, the singer complimented her elaborate attire to DeGeneres. However, she learned afterwards that Bowie’s remarks about her during that segment had been edited out for the broadcast.

“The producer, who’s a really good friend of mine, had to call me and tell me, ‘I can’t believe she did this, but she cut it out of the show,’” Cho recalled. “‘But you need to know that he was going on and on about your outfit. God said your name. He loves you.’”

Cho admitted that she wasn’t sure if Bowie’s comments about her impressive look were cut from the show for time or for another reason. “But still — I’m going to take it personally,” she said.

Acting like you’ve never met someone you’ve totally met many times before is such a mean girl move, my gosh. I agree with Margaret, “Bitch, what?” And then for Ellen to cut out another guest — David freakin’ Bowie! — complimenting Margaret, that’s just another textbook mean girl move, that also speaks to Ellen’s insecurity. What a lovely snapshot of the late Starman, though. I especially love the producer saying to Margaret of Bowie, “God said your name. He loves you.” And here’s a smattering of fun facts to tie everything together: Margaret Cho and I actually attended the same high school in San Francisco! Only Margaret was expelled, and I was a class speaker at graduation. Now Margaret has carved out a career as a performer on her own terms (including a supporting part in Dying For Sex; if you haven’t watched that show yet, what are you waiting for?!), Diplomas are great, but not necessarily everything. And as for Ellen, she and wife Portia de Rossi were able to buy a home in England and GTFO of Trump’s America, so perhaps she’s still getting the last laugh on us.

David Bowie’s music catalog sold for over $250 million

wenn5143618_edited-1-678x1024

Since his passing in 2016, David Bowie’s estate and wife, Iman, have been keeping his legacy alive. David is posthumously joining the growing ranks of rockers who have sold their music catalog. Tina Turner, Bob Dylan, Stevie Nicks, and Bruce Springsteen all sold their catalogs recently, some for upwards of $300 million. Variety confirmed that David’s catalog has been sold to Warner Chappell Music for at least $250 million. The deal includes most of his music spanning from 1968 to 2016. Below are a few more details from Variety:

After months of negotiations, David Bowie’s estate has sold the singer’s formidable publishing catalog to Warner Chappell Music for a price upwards of $250 million, sources confirm to Variety. The catalog spans six decades and includes such songs as “Heroes,” “Changes,” “Space Oddity,” “Fame,” “Let’s Dance,” “Rebel Rebel,” “Golden Years,” “Ziggy Stardust,” “All the Young Dudes,” his 1981 collaboration with Queen “Under Pressure” and hundreds more.

The agreement comprises songs from the 26 David Bowie studio albums released during his lifetime, as well as the posthumous studio album release, “Toy,” which comes out on Friday. It also includes the two studio albums from Tin Machine, along with tracks released as singles from soundtracks and other projects.

The deal brings nearly all of Bowie’s music into the Warner system. Last September, the estate announced a global partnership with Warner Music that will bring the late artist’s vast recorded-music catalog from 1968 through 2016 under the company’s umbrella; the deal includes Bowie’s albums from 2000 through 2016, which were originally released via Sony Music. News that Bowie’s estate was in negotiations to sell his publishing was broken by Financial Times in October.

The announcement comes amid the “Bowie 75” celebration, surrounding the late singer’s 75th birthday on Saturday, Jan. 8. The campaign also includes pop-up stores in New York and London and the release in November of the “Brilliant Adventure (1992-2001)” boxed set and, on Friday, his previously unreleased “Toy” album, comprising re-recorded versions of relatively obscure songs dating from early in his career; while that album is available as part of the boxed set, it will be released separately on Friday.

It makes me happy that David’s legacy lives on. I have been a fan of his since Labyrinth (Jareth was the ish) and it broke my heart when he passed away in 2016. He was like a modern day Apollo (god of music) to me. I always wondered what would happen to his catalog, especially after seeing what happened to Prince, and I am happy that David had the foresight to have his estate set up. I am happy that David is still getting his flowers. I also like the sum that his catalog is reportedly being sold for. David had a prolific career that spans several genres of music. I hope his music is used for amazing things and great movie soundtracks. “Under Pressure” and “Let’s Dance” are definitely a part of my life’s soundtrack. I also can’t believe that David would have been 75 years old on January 8th. He always seemed ageless to me. I am looking forward to this new album of re-release songs. Looks like January will be a month of celebrating some of my favorite Capricorns who are no longer with us. Hopefully this deal will lead to younger generations discovering Bowie’s talent.

Iman on David Bowie: ‘He’s not my late husband. He’s my husband’

People Magazine cover featuring Iman and David Bowie

2016 was a rough year. We lost many of my favorite celebrities like Prince, Carrie Fisher, Alan Rickman and Gene Wilder. But one of my biggest heartbreaks was the loss of David Bowie. David and Prince fueled my preadolescent fantasies. When David married Iman in 1992, he gained my eternal respect. It has been five years since David passed. Iman is launching her first fragrance exclusively for HSN called Love Memoir in honor of her husband. The fragrance is said to be a mix of David’s favorite fragrance, Grey Vertiver by Tom Ford, and bergamot for Tuscany where there were married. In cover interview with People, Iman talked about her beautiful romance of 26 years. Iman said she met David on a blind date (I am looking at you Meghan) and he told her later that it was love at first sight. Here are a few highlights and a clip is below:

“David said it was love at first sight,” Iman, 66, tells PEOPLE. “It took me a few months but I got there.”

After their first date, she recalls how she flew to Paris to walk the runway for her friend, Thierry Mugler. When she arrived at her hotel room, it was filled with flowers. Gardenias. And when she returned to L.A., he was there to meet her at the airport. “And that’s how it started,” she says. “He properly wooed me.”

Yes, she was drawn to the musician for his kindness. “Early on, we were walking down the street and my shoelace came undone and he got on his knees to tie it for me and I thought he’s the one.”

But there was also their off the charts chemistry. “David was beyond handsome,” she says. “He oozed charisma.”

The two complemented each other in unexpected ways. “If David was not in my life, I don’t know if I would have had the courage to start Iman Cosmetics [in 1994]” she says. “I asked him ‘What if it fails?’ and he said, ‘If you don’t try, you’ll never know if it succeeds.’ He was very proud that it was one of the first lines to be very inclusive. Very chuffed, as he would say. Pleasantly happy.”

Now that he’s gone, says Iman, “There are days that are harder than others but the memories are not all sad of why the person isn’t here. The memories are now of how great it was.”

“Sometimes I have to remind myself that I had 26 years. So I have that to sustain me.”

And she has no thoughts of ever marrying again. When her daughter, Alexandria “Lexi” Jones, now 21, asked her about it, Iman recalls, “I said ‘No, I will not.’ I still feel married. Someone a few years ago referred to David as my late husband and I said ‘No, he’s not my late husband. He’s my husband.’”

“I definitely feel his presence, especially when I look out over the glorious sunsets at our home because David loves sunsets,” she says. “So in that way he is ever present.”

[From People]

My goddess this story just makes me tear up a bit. I used to love seeing photos of David and Iman together. David always looked like he felt like the luckiest man on the planet when he was standing by Iman. Iman just glowed like she was planet orbiting his very bright star. I understand why Iman says she probably won’t remarry. Iman was very fulfilled in her relationship and marriage with Bowie. I love the story about how Iman knew she would marry him because he got on his knees to tie her shoe laces. To be fair, I would have fallen in love with Bowie at that moment too. I also love how David encouraged Iman to start Iman Cosmetics. He just seemed like a very loving and supportive husband and I am so happy Iman was able to experience that sort of love.

I am looking forward to this new fragrance that Iman has created. I personally love everything Tom Ford and the notes of Love Memoir sound amazing. I also love the story behind the scent. I hope over time Iman will not get sad whenever she thinks about David. To be fair, I don’t think that’s something spouses ever get over.

American Idol Results: And the FINAL Winner Is…

The final piece of confetti has dropped.

The final tears have fallen from Jennifer Lopez’s eyes. And Ryan Seacrest has signed off for the final time.

Indeed, following 15 seasons of highs and lows… missed notes and perfect notes… judges who flirted and judges who nearly came to blows… American Idol signed off for good on Thursday night.

The two-plus hour event included a return from familiar faces such as Randy Jackson and Kelly Clarkson, the latter of whom sang a medley of her greatest hits.

There was also a David Bowie tribute, appearances by Jennifer Hudson and Fantasia and even President Obama recorded a message to be played over video.

But there was last piece of business to conduct prior to saying goodbye: selecting a winner!

Would it be Trent Harmon, the soulful 25-year old from Armory, Mississippi?

Or would it be La’Porsha Renae, the 22-year old who also hails from Mississippi and whose emotion pours through with every performance?

And the champion is…

… TRENT HARMON!

“I worked so hard. I know that I had a God-given ability, but I didn’t want to take it for granted,” Harmon said through years to conclude the show. “I wanted to work so hard, and [Renae] pushed me to do it.”

So there you have it.

What do you think, fans? Who SHOULD have won the final season of American Idol?

Why didn’t people clap for Mad Max costume designer Jenny Beavan?

Jenny Beavan took the home the Oscar for Best Costume Design for Mad Max: Fury Road last Sunday. As soon as she hit the stage, my girlfriend in New York shot out a group email saying, “How bad@ss is it the Best Costume Designer is wearing a leather jacket?” We all sent back cyber fist bumps. Apparently, the glitterati of Hollywood did not share our enthusiasm. As Jenny walked victorious to the stage, a number of high ranking entertainment industry folks either looked dismayed or withheld applause. The soon-to-be Best Director Alejandro Iñárritu even folded his arms across his chest. The question is, were his actions sour grapes that his designer for the The Revenant lost or did all the haut monde feel Jenny was too casual for their fancy dress party:

What gives? Some of Hollywood’s biggest talents refused to clap for Mad Max: Fury Road costume designer Jenny Beavan on Sunday, February 28, as she walked up to the Dolby Theatre stage to accept her Academy Award — and the reason why they didn’t applaud her is even worse.

Beavan broke away from the Oscars’ traditional dress code at the 88th awards ceremony, proudly grinning and walking down the aisle in a leather jacket (complete with a studded skull on the back) and a striped scarf.

As she walked by, several audience members glowered and gave her judgmental looks. Four-time-Oscar-winning director Alejandro Iñárritu crossed his arms and glared, while Spotlight director Tom McCarthy touched his face with a confused expression. Other members of the audience were seen giggling and smiling before raising their hands to belatedly clap for the recipient.

This jacket is looking to take down Awards Season. This is the same jacket, minus the bedazzled Skull of Awesome, Jenny wore to the BAFTAs when Stephen Fry joked, “Only one of the great cinematic costume designers would come to an awards ceremony dressed as a bag lady,” after she’d won for Max. Twitter attacked him and he quit Twitter saying, “Will all you sanctimonious f****** f*** the f*** off Jenny Beavan is a friend and joshing is legitimate. Christ I want to leave the planet.” After the BAFTAs, Jenny said she wasn’t comfortable in a gown and her bad back prohibited heels. Then she quipped, “… This was a homage to Mad Max and I obviously didn’t get it quite right at the Baftas, the scarf was meant to be an oil rag.” The best news? The jacket is not only faux-leather but currently on sale at Marks and Spencer for about $60.

Lily Aldridge Talks Style

FFN_f_51507994

On her style:

“I grew up in the Valley in California. I was so into playing with clothes, dressing up, being girly, but around kindergarten, I became a tomboy. II was a super-tomboy, and really into sports. When I was in high school I got into fashion: I had to wear a uniform to school, so it was all about the shoes. That is how you identified yourself when you went to a Catholic school, by your shoes! I kind of liked the Adidas shell-toe sneakers. I was into rock ’n’ roll so I would also wear Dr. Martens, and cut-off jeans with a simple T-shirt.”

“I’ll always have a little bit of that tomboy trait and a little bit of rock ’n’ roll in me. Growing up, I was influenced by Mick Jagger and David Bowie. I love fashion, and the older I get, the more fun I have with it. I’ve realized it doesn’t matter what people think, because the important thing is to have fun.”
