Why didn’t people clap for Mad Max costume designer Jenny Beavan?

Jenny Beavan took the home the Oscar for Best Costume Design for Mad Max: Fury Road last Sunday. As soon as she hit the stage, my girlfriend in New York shot out a group email saying, “How bad@ss is it the Best Costume Designer is wearing a leather jacket?” We all sent back cyber fist bumps. Apparently, the glitterati of Hollywood did not share our enthusiasm. As Jenny walked victorious to the stage, a number of high ranking entertainment industry folks either looked dismayed or withheld applause. The soon-to-be Best Director Alejandro Iñárritu even folded his arms across his chest. The question is, were his actions sour grapes that his designer for the The Revenant lost or did all the haut monde feel Jenny was too casual for their fancy dress party:

What gives? Some of Hollywood’s biggest talents refused to clap for Mad Max: Fury Road costume designer Jenny Beavan on Sunday, February 28, as she walked up to the Dolby Theatre stage to accept her Academy Award — and the reason why they didn’t applaud her is even worse.

Beavan broke away from the Oscars’ traditional dress code at the 88th awards ceremony, proudly grinning and walking down the aisle in a leather jacket (complete with a studded skull on the back) and a striped scarf.

As she walked by, several audience members glowered and gave her judgmental looks. Four-time-Oscar-winning director Alejandro Iñárritu crossed his arms and glared, while Spotlight director Tom McCarthy touched his face with a confused expression. Other members of the audience were seen giggling and smiling before raising their hands to belatedly clap for the recipient.

This jacket is looking to take down Awards Season. This is the same jacket, minus the bedazzled Skull of Awesome, Jenny wore to the BAFTAs when Stephen Fry joked, “Only one of the great cinematic costume designers would come to an awards ceremony dressed as a bag lady,” after she’d won for Max. Twitter attacked him and he quit Twitter saying, “Will all you sanctimonious f****** f*** the f*** off Jenny Beavan is a friend and joshing is legitimate. Christ I want to leave the planet.” After the BAFTAs, Jenny said she wasn’t comfortable in a gown and her bad back prohibited heels. Then she quipped, “… This was a homage to Mad Max and I obviously didn’t get it quite right at the Baftas, the scarf was meant to be an oil rag.” The best news? The jacket is not only faux-leather but currently on sale at Marks and Spencer for about $60.

People Mag’s latest Amal Clooney propaganda piece is spectacular, blatant

FFN_Alamuddin_Amal_EVG_101514_51559255

Amal Clooney is back in London after her whirlwind trip to Greece earlier this week. You can see the photos of her in London here. Her travel-wear has greatly improved, right? I think she’s basing her newlywed look on one part Duchess Kate and one part Jackie Kennedy. Anyway, there are even more Amal stories, if you can believe it, so let’s get to it.

First of all, Amal was just named the “Most Influential Woman In London” by The Evening Standard, a reasonably conservative UK paper. Amal actually made #4 on the Most Influential list, but she’s the highest ranking woman, thus “most influential woman.” She’s more influential than Victoria Beckham AND Duchess Kate. Kate didn’t even make the list!

Next, a days-old story that I just never got around to writing about, but it is sort of interesting. Apparently, Amal got her new husband a very special wedding gift: expensive Murano cocktail glasses from Venice. George Clooney (Mr. Alamuddin, if you will) admired the Murano glasses that were used during their wedding celebrations, so Amal ordered him a set of 12 at a cost of $100 each. She also bought him a matching set of 12 silk napkins and napkin holders. Because what self-respecting heterosexual man doesn’t want napkin holders, amirite? Admit it, girl. You bought the napkin holders as a gift for yourself. You so fancy, Amal.

And finally, we have this absolutely spectacular piece of pro-Alamooney propaganda courtesy of People Magazine:

Amal Clooney is many things: a high-powered attorney, a budding fashion icon and George’s wife. But beyond the formidable intellect, impressive career and killer style, she is known among her inner circle for her warmth and wit.

“She has a devastating sense of humor,” a close family member tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue.

The younger daughter of Ramzi Alamuddin, a retired businessman, and Baria, an editor at Arabic-language newspaper Al-Hayat, she is also a loving aunt to her sister Tala’s children, including niece Mia, 12, and 6-year-old twin nephews Jad and Sari.

“She’s a doting, pampering aunt,” says the family member. “She has a loving heart.”

When it comes to her career, however, she is anything but soft.

“She’s supremely self-confident,” says William Schabas, a law professor at Middlesex University in London, who knows Amal professionally.

While she incites media mania in Greece, where she has been working on a case involving one of the world’s longest-standing cultural property disputes, those who know her say she will harness the spotlight to focus on issues that matter to her. The case, which centers on a collection of Greek masterpieces known as the Elgin Marbles or the Parthenon Marbles, “is very difficult and shows that she is not shying away from controversy,” a legal source says.

Adds a colleague: “She is picking up where the honeymoon temporarily left off. She is back with a vengeance.”

[From People]

Wow. What a blatant attempt to humanize Amal Clooney. Now that People Magazine’s readers (the Minivan Majority) know that she’s a top barrister with great hair AND she’s funny AND she’s a loving aunt, maybe now people will feel better about this hussy who stole America’s Bachelor ™? As for this whole “she doesn’t shy away from controversy” thing… um, I have mixed feelings. While the marble debate is a hot topic in Amal’s hometown (London), it’s a pretty artsy-fartsy #firstworldcontroversy. If she was really into controversy, she should have taken that UN job investigating war crimes between the Palestinians and Israelis. THAT would have been a hotbed of actual controversy. #NoDisrespectToTheNapkinHolders

Taylor Swift: ‘You shouldn’t be threatened by women who are pretty & charismatic’

swifty1

Taylor Swift covers the new issue of FASHION Magazine (Canada). It’s a decent shoot, but that’s mostly because I love some good coat p0rn. There’s a chill in the air and I want that light grey-ish coat!! Anyway, Swifty is promoting her new album, 1989, and she’s still giving pretty decent interviews. Some highlights from the FASHION article:

On poetic justice: “I feel like writing a song is sort of the last piece of the puzzle of solving whatever mystery I’m trying to solve emotionally. Things that kind of torture and haunt me a little bit are usually put to rest when I figure out a way to say it in a song. There’s a strange, eerie form of justice that happens when someone treats you terribly, you write a song about it, and that song ends up playing all over the world. You know at some point they’ve heard it in the grocery store, and they can’t escape.”

On being emotionally vulnerable: “As a songwriter you have to open yourself up over and over again to pain and rejection – and doing that at the stage my career is in, the stakes are pretty high. So if you get your heart broken, you get your heart broken on the cover of magazines that are all over the world. But I think that it’s important to continue to live your life, and not be guarded or standoffish or keep people at a distance.”

On her changing values: “When I was in my late teens and early twenties, I was just fascinated by romance. I think now the most important thing to me is the opinions of the sisterhood of friends that I have now … I think that my girlfriends have been what has shaped me more in the past year and a half than any other factor.”

On girlfriends versus sycophants: “Celebrities surround themselves with people who don’t know what they want and only have you to validate their lives—that’s not interesting to me. You should not be threatened by women who are pretty and charismatic and good at what they do…my girlfriends have shaped me more in the past year and a half than any other factor. I’ve never had more friends who I trust and can rely on, but there’s always a bit of your self-perception that’s frozen in junior high, when you trained yourself to not feel cool. You’ll never really feel like you’re part of the ‘in’ crowd, but growing up means that matters to you less and less every day.”

Why she sings blind-item songs: “You have to give emotion in order to evoke emotion in people. What I see cutting through are singers who give details and insights about their lives, because people feel appreciative that you’ve trusted them with that information. Being revealing can present itself in different ways—I’ve chosen to do it emotionally because that feels more natural to me.”

[From Fashion Magazine]

Do you believe her? I think she gives some seemingly reasonable and well-explained justifications for why she sings her blind-item songs and why she slammed so many of her exes musically. But here’s the part that I don’t really understand: “there’s always a bit of your self-perception that’s frozen in junior high, when you trained yourself to not feel cool.” There’s a lot wrong with that statement, and she’s throwing it out there like it’s a universal experience. No, Taylor, many of us are not stuck in the junior high mindset of coolness rankings. And I really don’t get “when you trained yourself to not feel cool.” As in… she’s always been cool but in junior high she trained herself to not feel cool and now she’s returning to her coolness? Good lord. This whole conversation about coolness is so middle school.

Also: “You should not be threatened by women who are pretty and charismatic and good at what they do.” Good advice, Swifty. Now let’s see you follow it. Lyrically and in real life.

Katy Perry Broke Another Record

Katy+Perry

Katy Perry broke another record — she’s got herself 50 million followers on Twitter, ousting Justin Bieber as the most followed artist. You go, Katy! She now stands tall on Twitter above The Beebs and The Gags. Curious about other Twitter music superstars? From Billboard:

Other high-ranking artists on Twitter include Britney Spears at 35 million, Rihanna at 34 million and Justin Timberlake at a little more than 30 million in total. (Oh, and the President of the United States, of course, but despite his 41 million followers, we won’t rank him until he releases an album.)

In fact, music remains the most-discussed topic on all of Twitter, with more than 1 billion tweets sent about music in 2013.

Do YOU follow Katy Perry on twitter? Who are some big name artist you follow? Everybody’s got at least one. I follow Katy, even though I’m still eye-rolling a bit after her big boob comment. But I can’t help it, I love her.

Miley Cyrus Is an Astronaut

miley cyrus

Not for real, duh (though I certainly wish someone would rocket her triflin’ ass off into space) – but Miley is doing astronaut duty in the new video for Future‘s song ‘Real and True’. We don’t have the full thing yet, only a 30 second preview, but I can already tell it’s going to be God-awful.

I don’t really get why Future, who is the hottest shit that’s up and coming in the R&B/hip hop scene right now, would willingly choose to work with Miley Cyrus, who does nothing but undermine his credibility. I honestly don’t understand and I wish I did. I want to take Miley seriously as an artist, but until she stops the bullshit, I feel like it’s too hard to do so.

In any case, Rankin directed the clip, so they premiered the sneak peek on Hunger.TV (his site) and blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. I’m sure that means as much to you as anything else I could say about it. Boo, Miley. On a side note, Future just got engaged to Ciara, which I find hilarious.
