Pres. Obama wasn’t offended when Larry Wilmore called him the n-word

As we discussed on Sunday, President Obama attended his last White House Correspondents’ Dinner Saturday night in Washington. Pres. Obama always brings the house down with his speeches, and this year was no different. As is often the case, Obama ended up being funnier than the actual comedian keynote speaker at the event. This year’s comedian was Larry Wilmore, who took over the 11:30 time slot on Comedy Central following Stephen Colbert’s move to CBS. Wilmore does a lot of racial humor, and his WHCD speech was no different. Considering he was speaking to a largely white audience, there were a lot of uncomfortable moments during Wilmore’s speech, and most critics claimed that Wilmore “bombed.” But the most uncomfortable moment came at the end, when Wilmore was reflecting on how much America has changed in his lifetime. He said:

“All jokes aside, let me just say how much it means for me to be here tonight. I’ve always joked that I voted for the president because he’s black. But behind that joke is the humble appreciation for the historical implications for what your presidency means. When I was a kid, I lived in a country where people couldn’t accept a black quarterback. Now think about that. A black man was thought by his mere color not good enough to lead a football team. And now to live in your time, Mr. President, when a black man can lead the entire free world. Words alone do me no justice. So, Mr. President, if I’m going to keep it 100. Yo, Barry, you did it, my n-gga!”

I thought it was an uncomfortable moment, but I noted that Obama took it in stride, laughing and embracing Wilmore as Wilmore left the podium. Other people were obviously knee-jerky about it, claiming that Wilmore never should have used any variation of the n-word. Al Sharpton said Wilmore’s use of the word was “in poor taste” and Piers Morgan (eye-roll) devoted some column space to his hot take. The outcry got so bad that the White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest had to answer questions about it at the White House briefing on Monday. According to Earnest:

Pres. Obama “appreciated the spirit of the sentiments that Mr. Wilmore expressed…Any reading of his comments made clear that he was not using the president as a butt of a joke. I take Mr. Wilmore at this words that he found that to be a powerful transformation just in his lifetime and something he seemed to be pretty obviously proud of.”

[From People]

I get that. I don’t 100% agree with it, but I get it. Wilmore gets it too. He spent some time talking about the kerfuffle on his show on Monday, saying: “I completely understand why people would be upset. It’s a very charged word – I get it.” But, Wilmore pointed out the difference between ending the n-word with an “a” versus an “er,” the difference being that one is a term of endearment (according to Wilmore) amongst black folks and the other is denigrating.

Also, Pres. Obama used the n-word in an interview last year and people freaked out. The context in which he used the word was important, just as I think the context of Wilmore’s usage of the word is important.

American Idol Results: And the FINAL Winner Is…

The final piece of confetti has dropped.

The final tears have fallen from Jennifer Lopez’s eyes. And Ryan Seacrest has signed off for the final time.

Indeed, following 15 seasons of highs and lows… missed notes and perfect notes… judges who flirted and judges who nearly came to blows… American Idol signed off for good on Thursday night.

The two-plus hour event included a return from familiar faces such as Randy Jackson and Kelly Clarkson, the latter of whom sang a medley of her greatest hits.

There was also a David Bowie tribute, appearances by Jennifer Hudson and Fantasia and even President Obama recorded a message to be played over video.

But there was last piece of business to conduct prior to saying goodbye: selecting a winner!

Would it be Trent Harmon, the soulful 25-year old from Armory, Mississippi?

Or would it be La’Porsha Renae, the 22-year old who also hails from Mississippi and whose emotion pours through with every performance?

And the champion is…

… TRENT HARMON!

“I worked so hard. I know that I had a God-given ability, but I didn’t want to take it for granted,” Harmon said through years to conclude the show. “I wanted to work so hard, and [Renae] pushed me to do it.”

So there you have it.

What do you think, fans? Who SHOULD have won the final season of American Idol?

Ahmed Mohamed, the clock-making teen, is transferring to another school

You’ve surely heard the viral story of how 14 year-old Muslim student Ahmed Mohamed was interrogated, arrested and taken to a juvenile detention facility after bringing a homemade clock to school in Irving, Texas this week. The clock was mistaken for a ‘hoax bomb’, although the teacher to whom Ahmed first showed his invention was told it was a clock. Ahmed was a freshman at MacArthur high school, where his reputation as a gadget whiz had not yet been established. In his previous school, he was well known as the kid who could fix anything for anyone. At MacArthur he was not taken at his word and was seen as a Muslim kid who made something vaguely resembling a bomb.

So many people are outraged at how a bright young kid could be so horribly treated. Ahmed has received a personal invitation to the White House from President Obama, a scholarship to NASA space camp, internship offers at Twitter and Reddit, and shout outs from Facebook, Google and MIT. Everyone is talking about this kid and the injustice he suffered.

People Magazine has an interview with Ahmed’s dad in which he reveals that his son will be transferring to another school, although they’re not sure which one yet. Ahmed’s dad, aunt and sister also say that Ahmed is very skilled at fixing things:

He won’t be returning to MacArthur High again, his father, Mohamed Elhassan Mohamed, tells PEOPLE.

“It will bring back bad memories for him,” he says of Ahmed, whom he describes as “bright, gifted and talented.”

Even as a young boy, Ahmed was intensely curious about how things worked, his uncle, Abdul Elhassan, tells PEOPLE. From cellphones to radios to light switches, he was enthralled. And if their car broke down, he’d offer to try to fix it himself.

“I’d say, ‘What are you talking about? You don’t even know how to drive!’ ” Elhassan recalls with a laugh.

He soon developed a reputation as the “fixer” in the family, as well as around the neighborhood and even at Sam Houston Middle School, which he attended until moving up to MacArthur High this fall.

“Everybody knew him” at his former school, says his aunt, Ekhlas “Lucy” Sirelkhtim.

“My daughter was in the same after-school program as he was and the teacher would say, ‘Let Ahmed come fix it’ if anything technical went wrong,” she recalls.

One of her favorite Ahmed inventions was a small car that transformed into a boat when placed in the bathtub. It turned back into a car on dry land.

“To be honest, the clock was not his best product,” she adds.

Creating electronic devices has long been Ahmed’s passion, says his sister, Eyman Mohamad, 18.

“It’s hard for most people to break something and put it back together, but for him, it’s fun,” she says.

As for the dramatic incident at school, Eyman says, “This isn’t right as an American. Ahmed loves to build and create; it’s his hobby. If this was someone else – not being Muslim, not being brown – it wouldn’t be a problem. It became racial discrimination. But the support we’re getting from everyone shows that America is standing up, and it’s so great to see.”

When her brother was taken to the police station on Monday, “he was really heartbroken,” his sister adds. “It just broke his little heart. But now he’s like, ‘I’m never going to stop, no matter what.’ He tells people, ‘Don’t be afraid to be yourself, no matter what the consequences are.’ ”

[From People]

I love how Ahmed’s aunt points out that the clock wasn’t his greatest invention. This kid reminds me of my son and his interests and my heart went out to him after hearing what he went through. The future is going to be very promising for Ahmed, although I can tell that would have been the case whether or not he was subjected to this ignorant, over the top arrest. It looks like the opportunities are just going to come faster for him now. He’s set to appear on The Late Show with Colbert soon.

Here’s an interview with Ahmed. He said “it made me really happy to see all these people support me and support others.” He also revealed that he’ll be accepting Obama’s invitation to The White House. (The Guardian has some more comments from Ahmed.)

And here’s the Irving police chief giving a press conference trying to defend their decision to arrest Ahmed:

Sarah Palin appeared on ‘Today’ and her crazy word salad was epic

palin2

As we covered yesterday, Sarah Palin jump-started some kind of insane and stupid fight with PETA because she posted some Facebook photos of her son Trig standing on their dog, Jill Hadassah. The controversy wasn’t limited to PETA, by the way. People commented on Palin’s Facebook page, and all of the internet, basically saying that parents should teach their children that it’s not okay to stand on animals. PETA did make a statement, basically saying the same thing. Which led to a magnificent word salad Facebook post from Palin, attacking PETA. This is the dumbest controversy, and Sarah Palin is milking it for everything. I guess she wanted some attention? In any case, Palin scored an invite to spew her brand of crazy on the Today Show this morning. Here’s the video:

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Sarah Palin’s still got a bone to pick with PETA. The Fox News contributor lashed out at the animal rights group yet again Tuesday on Today, beginning by reiterating “there was no harm at all” done to dog Jill Hadassah when 6-year-old Trig stood on the pup’s back.

The labrador retriever is “a strong, trained dog,” said Palin, noting that the service canine “really, really love(s)” her Trig, who has Down syndrome. She explained Monday in a statement to NBC News that Jill “was born and trained [by the Puppy Jake Foundation] to help those with challenges most of us will never understand”—like those faced by her special needs son.

The former governor of Alaska pointed out once again that Ellen DeGeneres, PETA’s Woman of the Year in 2009, posted a similar picture of a young child standing on a dog. “The outcry there was ‘oohs’ and ‘has’ and [that’s] sweet,” Palin said. She also took issue with New York City mayor Bill de Blasio, PETA’s Man of the Year for 2014. “He had just—doggone it!—he killed a groundhog when he dropped it last year on Groundhog Day!”

“It’s absolutely hypocritical that [PETA’s] double standards apply to, I don’t know, perhaps a constitutional conservative,” Palin added.

When asked whether mentioning that President Barack Obama admitted to having eaten dog as a child was a “cheap shot,” Palin replied emphatically, “Heck no…President Obama, too many of the far left radicals who are part of the PETA, they look at him as, I don’t know, their messiah! I think he as a child, probably the same age as Trig, did much worse than just use the dog as a stepping stool.”

Palin, who said said she agrees with “what I hope is the true meaning of [PETA’s] mission—respecting God’s creation and critters,” was asked whether she’d consider “smok(ing) the peace pipe” with the organization. This got a laugh out of the mom of five, who said she didn’t think most PETA members “would put up with what I believe in,” including practices like hunting and eating meat.

“But, I believe there would be mutual respect and support if we can both agree that, yeah, God’s creation here is really precious, very sacred and we should do all we can to conserve,” she said.

[From E! News]

“It’s absolutely hypocritical that their double standards apply to, I don’t know, perhaps a constitutional conservative.” ??? Girl, is your word salad being written by Joel and Ethan Coen?! She had to drag Bill de Blasio into it, and every other liberal dog-stander, groundhog killer and animal-eater. This whole thing makes no sense, but maybe I’m the crazy one because I’m looking for logic in an Sarah Palin interview. She’s just trying to get some attention.

Katy Perry Prayed for Big Boobs

katy perry 2

Katy Perry is hot – I don’t think anyone would really deny that, regardless of how they feel about her music (though I’m sure one of you will prove me wrong here). I’m a big fan – I love her music and I think she’s adorable and totally someone you’d want to be best friends with. I also think she’s pretty sexy, and her new shoot with GQ kinda proves my point.

In her cover story for the magazine, which is pretty geared towards men but has an untapped market in the lesbian audience, I’d say, Katy talks about how she used to wish for big boobs when she was younger – and by golly, she got them!

“I lay on my back one night and looked down at my feet, and I prayed to God. I said, ‘God, will you please let me have boobs so big that I can’t see my feet when I’m lying down?’

“God answered my prayers. I had no clue they would fall into my armpits eventually.”

LOL… oh, Katy. I don’t know that that’s something I’d reveal in a magazine interview (or any interview, really), but that’s sorta what I love about her – she doesn’t mind being goofy or seeming dorky – kinda like Jennifer Lawrence, but far less in-your-face.

She also got a little weird as she discussed her belief in aliens and astrology and… President Obama?

“I see everything through a spiritual lens. I believe in a lot of astrology. I believe in aliens. I look up into the stars and I imagine: ‘How self-important are we to think that we are the only life-form?’ I mean, if my relationship with Obama gets any better, I’m going to ask him that question. It just hasn’t been appropriate yet.

“I might have won Wisconsin for him. Actually, I didn’t do too much, but he called on me a couple of times. Which was very nice.”

Okay, we’ll just leave that one alone and concentrate on the hotness…

Chris Pine on social media: ‘I find it to be a waste of time, the Internet is so caustic’

pine1

I know Chris Pine wears the Eau D’Ouchebag scent in real life, but I can’t help it – I find him attractive. I don’t really want to talk to him or anything, but that’s not because I think he’s stupid. He’s not stupid. At all. He’s a college-educated, well-read, well-spoken, interesting guy. He’s just a guy who only dates dumb 22-year-old lingerie “models” and that irritates me. So, I don’t want him to talk because when he talks, he reminds me that he’s actually a cool, attractive guy and then I get pissed off that he “dates down” all the time. I’m a whirlwind of emotions right now, I’m just saying.

Anyway, Chris covers the new issue of The Hollywood Reporter – he’s promoting Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, his chance to get another franchise under his belt. The interview is, again, interesting. Although I think Chris should stop talking about how uncomfortable he is with movie stardom – no one forced him to sign on to two franchises, you know? Here are some highlights from the interview:

Working with Lindsay Lohan in Just My Luck: “It was a real cyclone of insanity, like being around The Beatles. It was fascinating to watch, and in hindsight it’s really a distinct moment in someone’s life when you see what’s really wonderful about what we get to do and what’s really dangerous about it.” Pine put his head down and worked. But he took away a valuable lesson from the experience: Never believe your own hype. “Hollywood is like living in a weird bubble. A bunch of people take care of you and get you stuff, and you’re the center of that little microcosmic world. You start believing that it is real and … you deserve it.”

He won’t talk about his love life: “That’s something I don’t really want to talk about”

The paparazzi: “They f—ing suck. The light of my flame was really bright after Star Trek [in 2009], and I had that bizarre convergence of everything’s so intense for about a month, and then it died down. During that time, they’re f—ing chasing you, and you’re driving at speeds you shouldn’t be driving at. Thankfully, I don’t really have much of that anymore.”

Social media: “No, f— no,” he says emphatically. “What am I going to tweet about? My sneakers? Or, ‘I have 140,000 friends on Facebook.’ What does that even mean? I find it to be a waste of time. The Internet is so caustic; just a place where people get to spew nonsense and bulls–t.”

His politics: [He] finds the whole left-right identification to be moronic. To Pine, Republicans and Democrats are interchangeable. He’s quick to point out the erosion of privacy and the strengthening of the Patriot Act under President Obama. “The head of our government can assassinate anyone, including an American citizen. We are striking countries with drones — sovereign countries. What if Mexico decided to bomb San Diego because there was a drug cartel there?” During a two-hour stretch with this reporter, Pine checked his iPhone exactly once — to confirm the name of Anwar al-Awlaki, a U.S. citizen who was killed in Yemen by a CIA-led drone strike. “Was he an awful guy? Yeah. Was he plotting terrorism? Possibly. But we crossed the line by just outright assassinating him.”

His approach to his career: “Unfortunately, I really don’t have a strategy — I have no desire at all to produce on a micromanaging level. For me, I love exploring ideas and throwing stuff against the wall and seeing what fits, and if I had a really nice collaborative team around me who could deal with the more day-to-day minutia, that would be fun. And directing sometime in the future and writing … yeah, I can see that all in my future.” Then he adds, smiling, “But I can be incredibly lazy.”

[From The Hollywood Reporter]

Most of THR story is just quotes from dudes who love Chris after working with him, all about how great he is. I would have liked to hear more from Chris. I want to know more about his politics! Who did he vote for in 2012? Does he donate money to political campaigns? I want to know! As for his personal social media ban… that’s interesting. There seem to be more and more celebrities speaking out against social media these days.

Nelson Mandela, Nobel winner & peace advocate, has passed away at the age of 95

mandelaheader

Nelson Mandela passed away yesterday at the age of 95. The world is in mourning. Mandela’s health had been struggling for years, and he seemed particularly fragile this year after a lung infection left him hospitalized over the summer, and many doubted that he would survive past the fall. According to South Africa’s president, Jacob Zuma, Mandela was surrounded by his friends and family at his home. President Zuma announced Mandela’s death in a nationally televised address, saying:

“Fellow South Africans, our beloved Nelson Rohlihlahla Mandela, the founding president of our democratic nation, has departed. Our people have lost a father. Although we knew this day was going to come, nothing can diminish our sense of a profound and enduring loss. His tireless struggle for freedom earned him the respect of the world. His humility, passion and humanity, earned him their love.”

[Via Reuters]

Mandela will receive a state funeral in South Africa, and I suspect that every major world leader will be rearranging their schedules to pay their last respects, including (but not limited to) President Obama, Prime Minister David Cameron, Chancellor Merkel and probably President Putin too.

Mandela – or “Madiba” as he was known to friends – served as South Africa’s first black president from 1994 to 1999. He was in prison for 27 years (from 1962 to 1990) for passionately opposing apartheid. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 (jointly with FW de Klerk, the man who released Mandela from prison). After his tenure as president, he devoted himself to the AIDS crisis in Africa, education and anti-war advocacy. He lived an incredible life that I can barely touch upon – you can read his Wiki page here. Pres. Obama made a speech shortly after Mandela’s passing:
