Gary Oldman lives in America now: ‘I say trunk & elevator & cellphone these days’

wenn21046810

Here are some photos of Gary Oldman at the London Critics’ Circle Awards over the weekend. I meant to cover them yesterday, but I totally forgot. I know how much many of you ladies love a dash of Oldman in your day. I have to admit, he looked very handsome at the event. The tuxedo was lovely, his hair is working and he’s aging a lot better than most of us were expecting. He’s 55 years old by the way. For some reason, I did think he was older.

Gary was at the event to pay tribute to a friend and film critic. But Gary also has some new movies coming out: he’s got supporting parts in Robo-Cop and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, both of which come out this year. So that probably explains why he did this new, lengthy interview with The Big Issue. You can read the full piece here, and here are some highlights:

His happiest memory: “To this day I think my happiest memory is the night my sister Jackie took me on the 36 bus to the Odeon. We went to see A Hard Day’s Night. I remember clearly waiting in line, then sitting in the audience in that lovely old cinema singing along to all the Beatles songs. Jackie had the album so I knew all the lyrics. I think I was wearing short trousers and a sweater my mother knitted for me. At one point Jackie had to shush me because I was singing so loudly. I remember that moment. Great memory. A great memory. I was six. And I didn’t have a care in the world.”

He lives in LA & Santa Barbara now with his English jazz singer wife Alexandra Edenborough, and his accent has changed: “I have dropped some English words for American ones; I say trunk and elevator and cellphone these days.”

He’s good an impressions: “I was quite a good impersonator. I have a knack. I can meet a person and do an impersonation of them within minutes. Yeah, it is a skill. I could have a whole conversation with myself and the four Beatles. I like language and I’ve always enjoyed the wonderful sounds of different accents. I can pick up an accent very quickly up.”

Even though he’s been a bad boy, he insists: “[I’m] a sweet boy whose conscience always got the better of him. A nice boy, a bit too sensitive for my own good.”

When people praise him: “What blows my mind most is when you meet people you respect and they revere you. You’re a fan of theirs… and it turns out they’re a fan of you. I still meet these people thinking, oh come on, they won’t have a f–king clue who you are. It’s wonderful when they know who I am. I remember with Dustin Hoffman, he actually just called up one day. He’d asked for my number. I answered the phone and there he was [he drops into a perfect Dustin Hoffman nasally snuffle], ‘Look, Gery, it’s uh, it’s Dustin’. And I said, oh… alright? And he’d seen something I was in and wanted to tell me.”

[From The Big Issue]

Gary also says he’s tried to pay it forward with compliments, and he’s started calling up his fellow actors to praise them when he’s seen a particularly good performance. He said that the last person he’s called was Matthew McConaughey, and Gary thought MM was “fabulous” in Dallas Buyers Club.

I actually didn’t know Gary had transplanted to California somewhat permanently. I know a lot of English actors get crap for immigrating to America for work (or for the American lifestyle), but I think it’s nice. And it explains some questions I’ve had about Gary making so many appearances in so many American films lately. He’s in LA/Santa Barbara – he probably takes meetings all the time for projects. It reminds me a bit of Anthony Hopkins too – after Hopkins became so famous in American films like Silence of the Lambs, he gave up his British citizenship and became an American.

Chris Pine on social media: ‘I find it to be a waste of time, the Internet is so caustic’

I know Chris Pine wears the Eau D’Ouchebag scent in real life, but I can’t help it – I find him attractive. I don’t really want to talk to him or anything, but that’s not because I think he’s stupid. He’s not stupid. At all. He’s a college-educated, well-read, well-spoken, interesting guy. He’s just a guy who only dates dumb 22-year-old lingerie “models” and that irritates me. So, I don’t want him to talk because when he talks, he reminds me that he’s actually a cool, attractive guy and then I get pissed off that he “dates down” all the time. I’m a whirlwind of emotions right now, I’m just saying.

Anyway, Chris covers the new issue of The Hollywood Reporter – he’s promoting Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, his chance to get another franchise under his belt. The interview is, again, interesting. Although I think Chris should stop talking about how uncomfortable he is with movie stardom – no one forced him to sign on to two franchises, you know? Here are some highlights from the interview:

Working with Lindsay Lohan in Just My Luck: “It was a real cyclone of insanity, like being around The Beatles. It was fascinating to watch, and in hindsight it’s really a distinct moment in someone’s life when you see what’s really wonderful about what we get to do and what’s really dangerous about it.” Pine put his head down and worked. But he took away a valuable lesson from the experience: Never believe your own hype. “Hollywood is like living in a weird bubble. A bunch of people take care of you and get you stuff, and you’re the center of that little microcosmic world. You start believing that it is real and … you deserve it.”

He won’t talk about his love life: “That’s something I don’t really want to talk about”

The paparazzi: “They f—ing suck. The light of my flame was really bright after Star Trek [in 2009], and I had that bizarre convergence of everything’s so intense for about a month, and then it died down. During that time, they’re f—ing chasing you, and you’re driving at speeds you shouldn’t be driving at. Thankfully, I don’t really have much of that anymore.”

Social media: “No, f— no,” he says emphatically. “What am I going to tweet about? My sneakers? Or, ‘I have 140,000 friends on Facebook.’ What does that even mean? I find it to be a waste of time. The Internet is so caustic; just a place where people get to spew nonsense and bulls–t.”

His politics: [He] finds the whole left-right identification to be moronic. To Pine, Republicans and Democrats are interchangeable. He’s quick to point out the erosion of privacy and the strengthening of the Patriot Act under President Obama. “The head of our government can assassinate anyone, including an American citizen. We are striking countries with drones — sovereign countries. What if Mexico decided to bomb San Diego because there was a drug cartel there?” During a two-hour stretch with this reporter, Pine checked his iPhone exactly once — to confirm the name of Anwar al-Awlaki, a U.S. citizen who was killed in Yemen by a CIA-led drone strike. “Was he an awful guy? Yeah. Was he plotting terrorism? Possibly. But we crossed the line by just outright assassinating him.”

His approach to his career: “Unfortunately, I really don’t have a strategy — I have no desire at all to produce on a micromanaging level. For me, I love exploring ideas and throwing stuff against the wall and seeing what fits, and if I had a really nice collaborative team around me who could deal with the more day-to-day minutia, that would be fun. And directing sometime in the future and writing … yeah, I can see that all in my future.” Then he adds, smiling, “But I can be incredibly lazy.”

[From The Hollywood Reporter]

Most of THR story is just quotes from dudes who love Chris after working with him, all about how great he is. I would have liked to hear more from Chris. I want to know more about his politics! Who did he vote for in 2012? Does he donate money to political campaigns? I want to know! As for his personal social media ban… that’s interesting. There seem to be more and more celebrities speaking out against social media these days.

Paris Jackson Suicide Attempt

The daughter of the late Michael Jackson, Paris Jackson, was rushed to the hospital early Wednesday (June 5, 2013) morning after a 911 call reported her as a possible overdose.

According to reports, Paris also cut her wrists.

In the hours before she was rushed to the hospital she sent out the following tweets:

She also quoted The Beatles, one of Paris favorite bands:

Paris is expected to recover fully, at least physically.

I don’t think any of us needs to explain how hard it must be to be the child of the most famous person ever. Whose father was a ravaged, drug addled mess, and whose mother gave birth to her for a paycheck.

I ADORE Paris, and even though she is a strong young woman and seems to be fairing well in life, I know she must have a hidden dark side which only she and those closest to her know of. I hope she gets the help she needs, longterm.

I also hope she gets as far away from the Jackson family as possible once she is 18…
