John Cena made some big news this week, as I’m sure you’re well aware of by now. I’m talking, of course, about his hair replacement revelation. (What’s that you say? He also just won a record-breaking 17th World Championship at WrestleMania 41, during his farewell tour before retiring from wrestling altogether? Well good for him!) Cena appeared on The Pat McAfee Show on Monday (ah, as a victory lap for WrestleMania, it all makes sense now) which is where he made his full-throated declaration in front of a live audience… who he pretty much blamed for driving him to take action with his hair. Wrestlers’ feelings can get hurt just as much as their bodies, and Cena claimed he’d had enough of fans loudly calling out his bald spot(s). As he put it: “Thank you for bullying me into surgical hair replacement.” But we still have to wait for the results, as he’s still donning baseball caps until the follicle fruits of his November procedure fully settle in.

That’s because the WWE icon is waiting for it to grow out after undergoing hair transplant, a procedure he sought out after facing criticism from wrestling fans over what he called a “bald spot” on his head.

“You guys ripped me to shreds for a genetic problem that I can’t control,” John quipped to the crowd during a public taping of The Pat McAfee Show on April 21, one day after defeating Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 41. “In unison, you chant and make me feel small and embarrass me.”

Sharing that he’s also seen “so many bald spot signs,” the 47-year-old continued, “That is straight-up bullying and not cool. Thank you for bullying me into surgical hair replacement. That’s how far y’all pushed me.”

John said he underwent the procedure in November, when doctors took hairs from the side of his head to “plant them in on top.”

“There is no shame in that,” he shared of his hair transplant, noting that balding “happens to seven out of 10 dudes.”

“I got a problem,” John admitted. “I try to fix it.”

Describing his hair journey as a “work in progress,” the Peacemaker star added, “Hopefully in a couple months, it looks better.”

But there is another hairy situation for John. As he explained, “I can’t grow a mustache.”

“Dude, I can’t grow facial hair,” he light-heartedly confessed. “I haven’t shaved in 10 years.”

John quipped that he may only be able to grow a ‘stache if he were to transplant hairs from “up top.”

“See, I listen to you idiots,” he joked. “You take the lawn over here and put it on the dry spot.”

I watched this part of the interview, and to me it genuinely seemed like Cena was trying to be joking and playful with the audience, as opposed to making serious accusations of bullying. Though, of course, humor is often deployed to mask pain… But I stand by my take that he’s solid and comfortable with his decision. I also don’t think he would really turn to surgery over taunts from the public, but hey, it’s not like I know the guy personally! I do enjoy that men are talking more openly about their own cosmetic procedures (#AskHimMore), like Ike Barinholtz revealing he undergoes platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections for his hair. If you have the means, it’s not hurting you or anyone else, and, most importantly, it makes you feel good about yourself, then maintain your masculine manes in good health. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if Cena gets tapped for an endorsement deal, once he’s ready to unveil his coif. He’s got the perfect slogan ready to go: “You take the lawn over here and put it on the dry spot.”

Best of the Oscars: Ryan Gosling’s ‘I’m Just Ken’ performance & John Cena’s cakes

I’ll be honest: for months, I’ve hated how much attention Ryan Gosling got for playing Ken in Barbie, and I’ve hated all of the hype around “I’m Just Ken.” I rolled my eyes at the news that Gosling would perform the Best Song-nominated “I’m Just Ken” at the Oscars. But Gosling’s willingness to be a full-throttle dork really won me over. That man put on a Barbie pink suit and DELIVERED. His performance – alongside some of the other “Kens,” plus Mark Ronson and SLASH – was easily the best moment of the night. The performance was staged, amazingly, as an ode to Marilyn Monroe’s “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. It was SUBLIME! I loved how everyone in the room was into it too – the Barbie women were singing along, Emma Stone jumped up to sing too.

One of the most extraordinary things is that Billie Eilish is now a two-time Oscar winner and both Oscars were won with her whisper-singing. Still, at least Barbie took home the Best Song Oscar?? Billie’s hair and makeup looked great too.

Another great moment is John Cena fulfilling his destiny as a naked himbo at the Oscars. He really was mostly naked – there were behind-the-scenes photos and he had his cakes out… sort of. He wore some sort of sticky cloth modesty panel, but from the side, it definitely looked like he was naked.

As for Jimmy Kimmel’s performance as Oscar host… it was okay. I actually liked the pacing and starting the Oscars at 7 pm knocked everyone off-kilter, but the show felt brisk and yet, they gave winners a lot of time. The absolute best part of Kimmel-as-MC was when he made a stupid joke about Poor Things and the camera panned to Emma Stone. Lip-readers are convinced she called him a prick. I hope she did!

John Cena went out of his way to meet a nonverbal teen refugee

In 2019, I reported on John Cena being the celebrity who has granted the most Make-A-Wish wishes. According to Wiki, that is still true. John even kept up wish granting during the pandemic, in the safest way possible. So it’s second nature for John to make wishes come true when he can. Such was the case when he heard the story of Misha Rohozyn. Misha is a 19-year-old Ukrainian refugee. Misha has Down’s Syndrome and is non-verbal. When he and his family had to flee Mariupol after their home was destroyed, Misha didn’t understand the situation. To encourage Misha to leave with as little trauma as possible, his mom made up a story that they were going to meet Misha’s hero: John Cena. I understand this, I’ve stretched the truth in the interest of my kids’ safety and they’ve never been in that kind of danger. I’m sure Misha’s mom did whatever she had to and was willing to deal with the repercussions once they were safe. Only John heard about the story and made the fib a reality. John flew to the family’s new home in Amsterdam to spend the afternoon with Misha.

John Cena enjoyed a “pretty darn special” afternoon with a teenage Ukrainian refugee.

The WWE legend was moved when he heard the story of Misha Rohozyn, who has Down’s Syndrome and is non-verbal, and his mother, who had told her son they were going to find the ‘Blockers’ actor when they had to leave their home in Mariupol following the invasion in Russia, so used his time off during a working trip to Europe to pay the 19 year old a visit in his new home just outside of Amsterdam.

In an emotional video shared by the WWE on YouTube, John said: “When I read about Misha’s story, it reached out to me not just Misha but the story of Misha’s mom as well. I had three days off from work, right at the time I read this story, and I’m an hour away by air, so that turned into ‘We’re going’.

John dressed in his signature ‘Respect Earn It’ T-shirt, denim shorts, yellow armbands and baseball cap to greet Misha and his mother, but quickly handed over his shirt and hand, along with a WWE championship belt to his young fan.

He said: “Misha’s ability to embrace resistance, that’s extraordinary. Those words never give up, we’ve all thought about those in our lives, they’re very powerful. I think Misha’s a great example– Misha’s mom – they’re two great examples of how persistence can lead to joy, even though the toughest of times.”

I realize I am completely biased, but what got to me the most in this story is that John kept throwing the narrative back to center on Misha’s mom. He gets that as incredible as his response was, he took a one-hour flight to Amsterdam. Misha’s mom, however, had to get her family out of a war-torn country safely. She probably hated lying to Misha and would’ve done anything not to disappoint him. Who knows if he’d believe her the next time? Or if his heart was broken that his hero didn’t show up. In the video posted below you can hear Misha’s mom openly sobbing. She’s so grateful to John allowing her to keep her word to her scared son. She told John at the end of the video that he “has a very big heart.” Which he does. And she is incredibly brave, and this is such a lovely story with a very sweet ending.

It’s hard to gauge sincerity in a celebrity, but I feel like this stuff matters to John. Yes, he gets publicity for it, but I don’t think that’s his motivation. I think there are stars who figure out how they can market their act-of-kindness even before it’s set up. If good is done, I shouldn’t nitpick the motivation, I realize, but my point is that the sense I get from John is his first thought is about the person receiving his generosity. And in this case, he understood that it was Misha’s desire to see him, but his mom was just as deserving of something amazing at this tragic time. She secured their safety but to see her family happy as well was heart-warming to watch. And now Misha gets to wear his John Cena gear and enjoy his life in Amsterdam knowing that John and more importantly his mom have his back.

John Cena on not wanting children: ‘totally not qualified’

John Cena was in a very public relationship with wrestler Nikki Bella from 2012 until 2018, about a month before they were supposed to get married. They split in part because John did not want children and Nikki did. Both have since moved on. John married his girlfriend, Shay Shariatzadeh, in a private ceremony in 2020 and Nikki has an 18-month-old son, Matteo, with her fiance, dancer Artem Chigvintsev. John was recently on the Drew Barrymore show to discuss his new show HBO Max show, Peacemaker. John spoke with Drew about having children. John reiterated that although he has not ruled out having children, he doesn’t want kids right now. John also stated that just because he is good with children doesn’t mean he should have them. “First of all, thank you for the comment,” Cena said. “I really enjoy my life. I have been riding a lightning bolt for quite some time now. I have been given opportunities to do and see things that man, I didn’t even dream of and I had some pretty lofty dreams. It’s hard work. It’s hard work to balance the time, I need to run myself correctly. It’s hard work to be the best partner and husband I can be to my loving wife. It’s hard to keep connections with those in my life that I love. And it’s also hard to put in an honest day’s work. This is just my perspective, totally not qualified, but I think just because you might be good at something, for me, is not a strong enough reason to do that. You have to have passion for it. You have to have a fuel for it. It’s like saying to someone, ‘Man, you know you are pretty good with your hands. You would be a great carpenter.’ But if I want to be an actor, I am going to be an actor. Just to say to somebody you have a great interaction with young people, that’s flattering.”

He continued, bringing up his years of work with the Make-A-Wish Foundation — “…The reason I love Make-A-Wish so much is because those are those families’ wishes. You can do anything you want, and Make-A-Wish’s list is enormous, they literally will do anything you want. ‘I want to kick it with John Cena and go see him wrestle.’ That is the coolest thing I have ever heard in my life.”

After going into detail about granting a record number of wishes, he got back to the question by saying, “But all things considered, I love all that, I love that joy. I love that connection and that’s where I’m at right now. It is difficult water to tread because everybody’s like, ‘Well, when?’ I just know not now.”

I have never understood why no one accepts when people say that they don’t want children. As if declaring we don’t want children is a personal affront to them. I know that Drew meant well, but John is right, just because you’re good at something does not mean you want to do it. I have mad respect for John for knowing that he would not be able to prioritize a child now. John may change his mind, but he is content and that should be enough. It is grating when people treat those of us who do not want children like a sad story or anomaly. It really is no one else’s business.

I wish more people would take the care that John and so many other people have taken when planning a family. I would encourage people to not be pushy with people who have chosen to be childfree. Their life choices are just as important as those who decide to procreate.

Red carpets are back, people. Premiere events are back! Last night, The Suicide Squad premiered in LA and I don’t see anyone with a mask. I would hope that everyone has been vaccinated, and that people had to show their vaccination cards to walk the carpet. Ordinarily, I would have made Margot Robbie the “star” of this post since she is the star of the film. But Taika Waititi and Rita Ora made their “red carpet couple debut” at this premiere, so now they’re getting all of the attention. Taika and Rita got together several months ago in Australia. Taika was hard at work on Thor: Love and Thunder and Rita was in town for The Voice: Australia. Love blossomed as most people were just stuck in Australia indefinitely because of the pandemic. And so here we are: Taika and Rita, love and thunder. I hate her outfit! He looks nice though.

Margot Robbie, John Cena and James Gunn were on Jimmy Kimmel Live, with Anthony Anderson hosting. They’re promoting The Suicide Squad, the sequel to Suicide Squad, out August 6th in theaters and streaming on HBO Max. I’m not into DC movies and have not seen the original, I’m sorry! Apparently rats feature prominently in Suicide Squad as there’s a character who can control them called Rat Catcher. They worked with multiple rats on set. I remember a story about Jared Leto giving Margot Robbie a live rat after the first movie. In the interview, Margot confirmed that she had a pet rat when they made the first film although she said she had to give it away after her landlord found out about it. Then director James Gunn started extolling the virtues of rats.

James Gunn: We have a rat who by the name of Jaws who we worked with a lot and then a rat by the name of Crisp Rat, who which is named after my friend Chris Pratt of course. They were our main acting rats they played Sebastian the rat in the movie. Then we had about 300,000 animated rats.

Margot Robbie: I had a pet rat when we did the first movie. His name is Rat Rat. When we shot Suicide Squad Mr. J gave me a rat and he became a beloved pet. We called him Rat Rat he liked beer and bath time. Then the landlord of the place I was renting found out I had a rat and said Rat Rat had to go. Then Jai Courtney who plays Captain Boomerang said I’ll take Rat Rat and then his landlord wasn’t cool with that either. Then one of the costumers on the job took Rat Rat and then she had to give Rat Rat away. She gave him to Guillermo Del Toro’s daughters apparently have rats so in the end Rat Rat’s a bit of a star f-ker really.

James Gunn: I made the Guardians of the Galaxy movies and after we put Rocket in that movie suddenly I got all these notes from all over the world of people having pet raccoons and they’re terrible pets. Rats are the best small animal pet in the world. They’re better than gerbils, they don’t bite like hamsters, they’re not like crazy stupid like guinea pigs, they’re as smart as a horse. For people that want a small pet a rat is the very best.

I’ve told this story here before, but I had a pet rat for a short period of time in college. My goth friends had one and they kept telling me how smart they were as pets. The first day I had her, the rat figured out how to get out of her cage so I put a heavy book on the top of it. She continued to smack her head on the top to open it and you can figure out how this story ends. RIP Jessica the rat. So I agree that rats are smart, but I don’t have much firsthand experience with them as pets. How weird is it to give someone a pet, especially if they’re not a family member? At least a rat is small and like Margot found out, you can give it away to a loving home. Do you truly want a smart pet though? Sometimes it’s best to have a dumb to average pet, as I learned the hard way.

Here’s the interview. I didn’t have a high opinion of James Gunn before this given what I know about him, but he came across OK. John Cena was doing a bit and it was kind of cute. I always like watching his interviews. Margot is so cute and you can tell she’s a hard worker but chill.

John Cena lived out of his car when he first moved to Los Angeles

John Cena’s success didn’t come easy and as far as I know, he has pretty much remained unproblematic. (Well except for those who were upset with him for apologizing in Mandarin for calling Taiwan a country a couple of months ago.) John, who is starring in Fast and Furious 9, opened up to The Sun about his journey to stardom. John said he found himself homeless and living in his 1991 Lincoln Town Car two weeks after arriving in Los Angeles. He made it work because he didn’t want to return home to Massachusetts and disappoint his family. Below are a few more highlights from The Sun:

He says: “I slept in my car for a while, which happened to be a very roomy 1991 Lincoln Town Car. I had my clothes in the trunk and I slept in the back seat.”

His job in a gym didn’t pay enough to cover his living costs. He says: “I’d wake up, use the locker rooms and the shower and repeat the process all over again.”

Even that “roomy” Lincoln would have been a tight squeeze for the musclebound six-footer. Bullied at school for his dress sense, John turned to weight-lifting.

He says: “I remember the walk to the school bus, at the very least, five times, being shoved down, toppled down.” But as a newly ripped 15-year-old, nobody picked on him.

He moved from the Massachusetts town of West Newbury to LA in 1999. Failure was not an option. His father John Snr, an estate agent, predicted John wouldn’t make it in La La Land.

He says: “Dad told me I would be home with my tail between my legs in two weeks. Sure enough, I went through my resources quickly and had to think on my feet. I didn’t want to go home crying.”

A trainer at the gym suggested John try wrestling. Under the name The Prototype — the first of several guises — he stepped into the pro ring in 2000. Within four years he was a WWE champ and enjoyed a rivalry with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Their 2012 bout broke WWE viewing records.

I know there are many stories that aren’t successes and some that turn out to be tragic. But I personally love stories like John’s, Phoebe Dynevor’s, and Laverne Cox’s. Stories about people who went hard after their dreams and at times wanted to give up right before their big breakthrough are so heart warming. For John, it couldn’t have happened to a better person. I think the only thing that saddened me about his story was his father. I believe children should be encouraged by their parents to pursue their dreams. Yes, a career in the arts is damn near impossible, but encourage them to at least try. Then again, it was most likely those disparaging remarks that pushed John to succeed. I had planned to go see FATF9 in theaters for Nathalie Emmanuel, Helen Mirren and Sung Kang. But this new Delta variant has me on pause. I’ll just have to wait to watch it on my flat screen.
