Of all of the couple announcements/updates we got this week, I’m still the most surprised by the Katy Perry-Justin Trudeau thing. Katy and the former Canadian prime minister were seen dining in Montreal, and TMZ had some exclusive photos. Trudeau has been separated from his wife Sophie for years, and Katy never married Orlando Bloom, but their split is more recent. There are two technically single people, but I just feel like… what in the world do they have in common? What do they talk about? Well, according to the Sun’s insiders, Justin is enamored. Really? Her?

Justin Trudeau is looking forward to spending more time with Katy Perry after ‘really clicking’ during a Montreal dinner date, two sources close to the former Canadian Prime Minister have told The U.S. Sun. The Sun has been told by two of Trudeau’s close associates that he wants to see the singer, who has been described as a “breath of fresh air,” again.

Trudeau separated from Sophie, his wife of 18 years, in 2023 and, according to our insiders, loved talking about a variety of topics with the 40 year-old star. The U.S. Sun understands the pair have been in contact for weeks after meeting at an event, and both share a common interest in trying to make the world a better place. Trudeau had hoped a quiet night in Montreal would have helped make the night more private. But with pics of the pair appearing on TMZ, their secret is out.

“Justin always enjoys nice company, and Katy is the kind of woman that really caught his attention,” the first source who worked with Trudeau while he was in office, told The U.S. Sun. “Justin has been single for a while and has enjoyed getting to know her. He likes her personality, and they are two people who really enjoy chatting about different topics, and they click very well so far, as they are going to see each other again very soon.”

Trudeau reportedly picked up the tab, which included lobster and cocktails, before showing their gratitude to the kitchen staff. The source says that although any hopes of keeping the dinner date under wraps were dashed, the 53-year-old politician doesn’t regret anything.

There are plans in the works for the pair to connect again in the United States, where he will be spending large amounts of time in the coming months.

“Whatever happens, happens. He is a single man, so is on the market and ready to start something new with a woman after a few rough moments after splitting from his wife,” continued the well-placed source. “He is feeling that talking to her and getting to know her is very refreshing, like a breath of fresh air in his life. He was happy to connect with her so well, and that she appreciates him being a normal, respectful person who was very understanding of her recent separation with Orlando Bloom. He isn’t the kind of guy that would rush things, and she seems to enjoy that a lot. It’s a gentlemanly way to behave.”

I can understand this coupling more from Katy’s perspective – Justin must seem worldly, intelligent, respectful and much more mature than her exes. But from Justin’s perspective? Why attach himself to Katy Perry of all people? Like, Katy has been a celebrity for what? Fifteen years or more. We know who she is and all of the sh-t she’s said and done. Her last album flopped largely because the culture has moved past Katy. Still, I just don’t understand how this even happened, how it started and why there’s even a conversation about a future together? Do they not understand how weird this is??

Summer gossip stories are becoming increasingly bizarre, right? Whatever happened to “two crazy 20-somethings have an international love affair which ends in tears as soon as the Halloween decorations come out?” Instead, we have this… Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau. Are people choosing their lovers by picking names out of a hat? Trudeau and his wife Sophie Grégoire separated in 2023, although I do not think their divorce has been finalized whatsoever. Sophie is dating a surgeon in Ottawa. Justin has not been publicly involved with anyone since his marriage fell apart. But now he’s going out on dates with freshly single Katy Perry? I thought Katy and Orlando Bloom were done and dusted months ago, but they only officially announced their split one month ago!

Katy Perry is saying “bon appétit” to Justin Trudeau … as the pair was seen chowing down at a swanky restaurant in Montreal. In new footage — obtained by TMZ — the pop star and former Canadian Prime Minister were seen dining together Monday night at Le Violon.

Katy appears interested in what Trudeau has to say, leaning in across the table during what looks like a thoughtful conversation. An eyewitness tells us the two sipped cocktails and shared several dishes … including one with lobster.

Apparently, security guards were keeping tabs on both of them … sitting at the bar with their backs turned, monitoring the date through the mirrored glass. At one point, we’re told the chef came to greet the duo … and after their meal, KP and JT made their way to the kitchen to thank the staff personally.

Katy’s making her way through Canada while on tour … performing tonight in Ottawa, with another show tomorrow back in Montreal.

I have so many questions about how this happened. How did they even meet? Who set this up? Who made the dinner invitation? Which one of them brought security, Trudeau or Katy? Interestingly enough, there’s no code of omerta among Canadian restauranteurs, because the rep for La Violon told People Magazine that “Katy and Justin seemed to have had a fantastic evening. They were super kind and friendly to the staff, and it was an absolute pleasure to have them at the restaurant.” The rep also said that they met Chef Danny Smiles and went to the kitchen to thank the staff personally.

In case you’re wondering about the ages… Justin is 53, Katy is 40. He seems like he should be older because he’s been in politics for so long, and Katy seems younger because she’s an immature idiot. I hate this for both of them!

About a month ago, Donald Trump announced extreme tariffs on Canadian, Mexican and Chinese goods. The market reacted with horror & outrage, as did our North American allies. PM Justin Trudeau and Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum both got on the phone with Trump and he backed down within a few days, bizarrely declaring victory even though nothing had been achieved. Earlier this week, the idiotic cycle began again, with Trump announcing 25% tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods, effective this week. While the Canadian government has tried to negotiate with the Trump administration, PM Trudeau has had enough of this BS, and he publicly accused Trump of acting in “bad faith” (it’s true). Soon afterwards, Trump and Trudeau got on a call which, according to the Wall Street Journal, “grew heated and included profanity.” (See update below)

President Trump signed executive orders suspending new tariffs on many imports from Mexico and Canada, two days after he imposed sweeping levies of 25 percent on two of America’s closest economic partners. The exemptions, on goods covered by the trilateral trade pact Mr. Trump signed in his first term, were a whipsaw reversal that followed days of economic turmoil. Stocks in the United States closed down 1.8 percent on Thursday.

While I have absolutely zero faith in Trump and the vile psychopath clownshow that is the Trump administration, what I do have nominal faith in is the self-interest and greed of the business class, the MAGA donor class. And I actually think they started to make their voices heard to Trump and Congressional Republicans. As in, cut out the monthly tariff melodramas, the stock market is going haywire and we’re losing billions. The coverage from Bloomberg and WSJ show this perfectly – the business class (which supported Trump) is pissed off that Trump is doing way too much. I also think a quiet revolt in the donor class might explain why Trump is suddenly making moves to fence in Elon Musk’s DOGE too.

Update by CB: An earlier version of this story stated that Trudeau cursed out Trump. Time quoted a senior Canadian official who stated that Trump used profanity while Trudeau did not:

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said earlier Thursday that he expects Canada and the U.S. to be in a trade war for the foreseeable future after having what he called a colorful but constructive call with Trump on Wednesday.

A senior Canadian government official said the call became heated and Trump used profanity when Trump complained about protections in Canada’s dairy industry. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to speak publicly about the call, said Trudeau did not use profanity.

On Monday, Donald Trump once again announced a series of massive tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China. I say “once again” because we already went through this a month ago, and Trump backed down like an idiot drama queen. This week’s tariff announcement immediately tanked the stock market, with the Dow dropping 700 points on Tuesday, sending global markets into a tailspin. Hours before Trump’s State of the Union address, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau addressed the international media and the American public:

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Tuesday called American tariffs “very dumb” and said that U.S. President Donald Trump is appeasing Russia while launching a trade war against Canada. In a blunt news conference during his final days in office, Trudeau said that Canada would plaster retaliatory tariffs on more than $100 billion of American goods in response to Trump’s 25% tariffs.

“Today the United States launched a trade war against Canada, their closest partner and ally, their closest friend. At the same time, they are talking about working positively with Russia, appeasing Vladimir Putin, a lying, murderous dictator. Make that make sense,” a visibly angry Trudeau said.

Trump imposed tariffs against Washington’s three biggest trading partners, drawing immediate retaliation from Mexico, Canada and China and sending financial markets into a tailspin. Just after midnight, Trump put 25% taxes, or tariffs, on Mexican and Canadian imports, though he limited the levy to 10% on Canadian energy.

“What he wants to see is a total collapse of the Canadian economy because that will make it easier to annex us,” Trudeau said. “That is never going to happen. We will never be the 51st state. I want to speak directly to one specific American, Donald. It’s not in my habit to agree with the Wall Street Journal, but Donald, they point out that even though you’re a very smart guy, this is a very dumb thing to do.”

Later Tuesday, U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said the U.S. would likely meet Canada and Mexico “in the middle,” with an announcement coming as soon as Wednesday.

Lutnick told Fox Business News that the tariffs would not be paused, but that Trump would reach a compromise. “I think he’s going to figure out, you do more, and I’ll meet you in the middle in some way,” Lutnick said.

It’s the immediate backtrack by Lutnick for me – that’s exactly what happened a month ago. Trump announced tariffs, Trudeau and Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo reacted with anger and disgust, and Trump backed down. At the SOTU last night, Trump also promised to do it again next month, to add even more tariffs on April 2nd. Here’s the thing – while it’s great to see average, everyday citizens to protest Trump and the Republicans, the Trump cultists are not going to stop this sh-t until they hear from the business class, their donors and the only political base they care about. Rupert Murdoch is trying to communicate with Trump through the Wall Street Journal, and I have to wonder when the Republican donor class will flat-out demand that Trump quit the theatrics. As for Trudeau… I feel so sorry for all of America’s allies, especially Canada. It’s like they’re just trying to exist and the crackheads who live in the basement keep breaking into their apartment to steal sh-t.

King Charles happily met Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy this weekend in Sandringham. Prime Minister Keir Starmer spearheaded a vivid show of solidarity with Ukraine, inviting European leaders and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to England over the weekend and doing photocalls and meetings around Ukraine. All of this was in response to the catastrophic meeting in the Oval Office last Friday between Zelenskyy, JD Vance and Donald Trump, a meeting in which Vance and Trump openly spouted Kremlin talking points as they lied and berated Zelenskyy. There are now widespread calls in the UK for King Charles to rescind his invitation to Donald Trump to make another state visit. I think people are missing the larger point? None of this is really Charles’s call, although he seems to be in lockstep with the Starmer government about how he and his “royal soft power” should be deployed. The Times had this interesting piece about Charles’s moves, not only with Ukraine, but Canada as well:

Far from merely smoothing over the row between Trump and Zelensky, however, sources close to the King describe his current role as being three-fold: to show diplomacy in action by building bridges with America, by expressing continued European support for Ukraine and, last but not least, through his support for the Commonwealth realms.

The latter was seen in action when Charles met Justin Trudeau at Sandringham on Monday. The Canadian prime minister has had his own problems with the new US administration after Trump’s tariff threats. As King of Canada, Charles has an obligation to a country with which he has close ties. He visited 19 times before ascending the throne and has lifelong friends there. It was here, on a visit to Halifax in 2014, that the King, then Prince of Wales, shared his views on Putin, likening him to Hitler. The Kremlin was furious.

As monarch, Charles will need to be more subtle with his language. The palace knows that actions speak louder than words when they come from a monarch. Or rather, less is more.

The King has already deployed this method. Last month, a seemingly innocuous social media post on the official royal social media channels marked National Flag of Canada Day, not something the palace always commemorates. Coming during the height of Trump’s attack on Canada, however, those in the palace were aware of the power of such a message at such a time. In a signed, personal letter, Charles paid tribute to Canada as a “proud, resilient and compassionate country”. The symbol of the maple leaf, he said, “never fails to elicit a sense of pride and admiration as I recall with the deepest affection my many Canadian visits and friendships”.

A visit to Canada is surely overdue for a senior member of the royal family, so Trudeau will have been pleased to spend time discussing the issues of the day with the King. The meeting also showed that the King was determined to build transatlantic alliances of all kinds, not just with the US.

The King’s task is not an easy one. Aides not known for their hyperbole have noted privately that the past week has been an exceptional moment for royal diplomacy, and one not seen for years. Charles has been treading a diplomatic tightrope as he works to build alliances across countries while not breaching the political guardrails. The King is still undergoing treatment a year after his cancer diagnosis was announced. However, Charles is said to be determined to play a key diplomatic role at this crucial time.

A royal source said that the King was “very conscious” of his global responsibility and unique diplomatic role and determined to put that to good use. The source said: “It has been six days of royal diplomacy at its most delicate, deliberate and nuanced. His Majesty is very conscious of his responsibility globally, regionally and nationally — and passionately engaged in all the detail.”

The source described the King’s audiences with Zelensky on Sunday and Trudeau on Monday as being “routine but highly significant, given the global context”.

While I obviously don’t know for sure, I would assume that the Starmer government brought these meetings and photocalls to Charles and asked him to do them, and Charles immediately said yes. It was probably Charles’s idea – or his staff’s idea – to bring Zelenskyy to Sandringham and to stage the intimate photo-op by the fire as well. It was probably Charles’s call to speak to Zelenskyy privately for several hours too. None of this is Charles acting independently though, that’s my larger point. Starmer is using Charles to pursue a larger strategy. To his credit, Charles has been doing this very well. Once again, it helps that Charles was the most well-traveled Prince of Wales in history and he has decades-long relationships across the world. All of this makes Prince William’s sad little storyline about “Trump thinks Peggy is handsome, therefore Peggy is a global statesman” seem especially childish. Notice how they’re keeping William far away from these politically sensitive photo-ops and meetings too.

Congratulations to Canada, the Canadian national hockey team defeated the American team in the 4 Nations face-off last night. The larger political issues between Canada and the US had been playing out within the hockey tournament in the past two weeks, with Canadians loudly booing the “Star Spangled Banner” and Canadian and American players beefing, as well as fans beefing. Last weekend, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau referenced the hockey games and the Canadian-American strained alliance during the Invictus Games, and Trudeau once again spoke out last night after Canada defeated the US.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had a pointed message for President Donald Trump after Canada’s ice hockey team beat Team USA in overtime on Thursday.

“You can’t take our country—and you can’t take our game,” the outgoing PM wrote on X after Canada defeated the U.S. 3-2 in the final of the 4 Nations Face-Off.

The matchup had become the most anticipated international hockey game in more than a decade after a political battle between the North American neighbors spilled out onto the arena, Axios reported. Trump has repeatedly said Canada should become the 51st American state and referred to Trudeau as “governor” since winning re-election in November. He has also threatened to start a trade war with one of the U.S.’s closest allies and biggest trading partners, which has left even conservative Canadian politicians fuming.

All of that apparently inspired Canadian crowds to boo the “Star Spangled Banner” during two Team USA games played earlier in the tournament. When Canada and the U.S. faced off in a first-round game last weekend, three fights broke out in the first nine seconds—all apparently pre-planned by a trio of American players, according to Axios.

Team USA’s general manager then told Fox News his team would “love it” if Trump attended the finals game against Canada. On Thursday, Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social that he couldn’t make it, but used the opportunity to take yet another swipe at Canada.

“I’ll be calling our GREAT American Hockey Team this morning to spur them on towards victory tonight against Canada, which with FAR LOWER TAXES AND MUCH STRONGER SECURITY, will someday, maybe soon, become our cherished, and very important, Fifty First State,” he wrote. He added that he couldn’t attend the game because he was speaking before the U.S. governors in Washington, D.C. “We will all be watching, and if Governor Trudeau would like to join us, he would be most welcome,” Trump wrote.

America is such an embarrassment, my god. The shame I feel that Trump is doing this on the world stage, that he’s this hostile to CANADA for the love of God. The way the Invictus Games are usually set up, Prince Harry gets some face time with the host country’s leader or head of state at the beginning of the games, then the head of state will attend a few events on one of the final days of the games. The head of state will almost always attend the closing ceremony as well. That’s what happened over the weekend in Canada – Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau waited until Sunday, the final day of Invictus, to attend some of the last events, and then he made a beautiful speech at the Closing Ceremony. The photos of Trudeau and Prince Harry sitting together and greeting each other are lovely, btw. It reminds me of when The Netherlands’ King Willem-Alexander attended some of The Hague events and he and Harry had a great time together.

The Invictus Games came during a tricky and terrible time in Canada-US relations, with the Trump administration’s open threats and hostilities towards our northern neighbor and close ally. On Saturday, the US and Canada played each other in the 4 Nations hockey tournament. They played in Montreal and Canadian hockey fans booed Americans and the “Star Spangled Banner.” Can I just say? As an American, I’m fine with Canadians booing our anthem. The current administration is f–king awful and I hope Canadians know that we still love y’all and we completely understand why you’re mad, and a lot of us hate Trump too. Anyway, Team USA beat Canada (lol). At the Invictus Games the next day, Trudeau made special mention of America’s Invictus veterans and the relationship between Canada and the US.

During his speech, Trudeau addressed Team U.S., telling the crowd: “If you’ll permit me, a quick word to the American team — our neighbors, our allies, our friends. I’m reminded of that old joke: I went to a fight last night, and a hockey game broke out,” he said in an apparent reference to the USA vs. Canada NHL 4 Nations Face-Off on Feb. 15, which the U.S. won.

“I know, my American friends, you’ve been reminded this past week that your Canadian friends and every other competitor in this place is just as proud to fight for their flags as you are to fight for yours — the stars and stripes,” he said.

“We all stand proudly together. We all believe in a future where we have values and a friendship that endures the test of time,” he continued. “We have stood together for generations and Canada and Canadians will never stop fighting for the friendship that unites our two countries through tough times and through the best times in the world. Americans are our friends, always. And we are yours.”

Like… this legitimately made me tear up. To think about how f–king disrespectful and hostile the Trump people have been about Canada, it’s beautiful that Trudeau is like, big picture time, Canada and the US will always be neighbors and friends, we’ll always fight for you.

In Trudeau’s Closing Ceremony speech, he honored Harry as founder of the Invictus Games, for changing the lives of so many veterans and so many military families. Harry was visibly choked up as everyone in the stadium gave him a standing ovation. I’m also including Harry’s closing ceremony speech (I couldn’t find Trudeau’s speech on YouTube, that’s why I’m using the social media video).
