It’s been a minute since anyone has talked about Lady Louise Windsor, who is currently a student at St. Andrew’s in Scotland. In previous years, we were getting various “Louise should be a working royal, we need new blood in the Windsor clan” stories every few months. But those stories died down significantly. Louise seems to be pretty quiet – she’s still carriage driving competitively, and she has a boyfriend now (Felix de Silva-Clamp) who seems to have parental approval. But Louise doesn’t seem particularly eager to be part of the “working royal” group. The Duchess of Edinburgh’s biographer recently said that Louise and her brother James will probably just… live their lives outside of the Firm for the most part.

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip’s four children all play very different roles in the modern royal family, and their own children have followed suit. Now, a royal biographer is weighing in on the possible future expectations for the late Queen’s youngest pair of grandchildren: Lady Louise Windsor and James, Earl of Wessex.

The children of Prince Edward and Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh — Louise, 21, and James, 17 — are years younger than their cousins and have largely been kept out of the public eye. As they reach adulthood and their parents have stepped into more senior royal roles following the accession of King Charles and Edward’s inheritance of his late father’s title, it’s believed that Louise and James may not be called upon for major royal duties.

“I think Sophie — and Edward — have been careful to prepare their children for a life outside the working royal family,” royal biographer Sean Smith recently told GB News. The author of a new biography on Sophie, subtitled Saving the Royal Family, Smith said he’s “confident that there will not be any pressure on Louise and James” to take on major royal duties.

Lady Louise is currently starting her final year at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, where she studies English. Like some of her cousins, she has also taken part in military training and holds the rank of Officer Cadet in the Army Reserve. Her most public royal connection, however, is her love of horses and carriage driving. She inherited Prince Philip’s driving ponies and carriage upon his death in 2021, and she recently competed at the National Carriage Driving Championships, where she was cheered on by her rumored boyfriend, Felix da Silva-Clamp.

“[She] is the only young woman of her age in the royal family, and I am sure she will be a great success at whatever she decides to do,” Smith said.

Meanwhile, James inherited his father’s former title of Earl of Wessex upon King Charles’ accession in 2023, having previously been titled Viscount Severn. He currently attends the all-boys boarding school Radley College in Oxfordshire.

Around Louise’s 18th birthday, there was a lot of fuss about whether she would decide to become “Princess Louise,” a title which was her due given the George V letters patent. It felt like Sophie and Edward were pushing for the title upgrade and pushing for Louise to join the working-royal rank eventually. But then it all just fizzled away. Louise never grabbed the princess title and she just seems to enjoy the quiet student life. Something else I’ve noticed is that both Louise and James don’t seem to care much about showing up to Windsor-family events. Louise skipped Trooping the Colour this year, and James skips family events with some regularity too.

Since Lady Louise Windsor turned 18 years old, conversations have been happening every three months or so about whether Louise would “join the Firm” and become a working royal. The royalist press has been itching for Louise to “provide some youth and glamour” to the dying institution. Hilariously, Louise’s parents do not seem to want that at all, and neither does King Charles or Queen Camilla. Please, Charles and Camilla are so self-absorbed that they never want anyone younger to get any attention. Louise is currently a sophomore at St. Andrew’s in Scotland, and she’s apparently thinking about what will be next for her after graduation. Apparently, she’s considering enlisting in the military??

Lady Louise Windsor is one of the most crucial royals in the future of the British monarchy – though you may not have noticed it. The studious niece of King Charles, 20, is seldom seen at royal events with her family as she prioritises her studies and keeps a lower profile – but as she’s set to be considering a career in the military, her nickname as The Firm’s ‘secret weapon’ may soon materialise.

Lady Louise, whose parents are Prince Edward and Duchess Sophie, is said to have ‘fallen in love’ with army cadets alongside her university degree at St Andrews – much like her father did a generation earlier.

A source told The Sun: ‘She talks about being very keen on a career in the military, serving the King and country. She is all about the Army Cadets and has fallen in love with it.’

If the 20-year-old royal, who has maintained a low profile during her university days, goes down the military path, she will be the first female royal since her late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, to do so.

Eighth in line to the throne, she is currently in her second year at the University of St Andrews studying English and has reportedly said on her LinkedIn page that she is interested in pursuing a career in ‘the military, diplomacy or law’.

Thus far, Lady Louise has ensured her studies come first as she completes her degree – missing out on two Easter Sunday services in a row as she stays in Edinburgh.

Nonetheless, the 20-year-old royal delights fans with every appearance – whether it’s her obvious enthusiasm for horse riding and all things equestrian, or her uncanny resemblance to her mother. As far back as 2021, she was dubbed the royal family’s ‘secret weapon’ thanks to her popularity with royal fans.

I didn’t catch the fact that Louise has skipped the past two Easter services in Windsor, preferring to stay in Scotland. I thought Louise simply wasn’t invited to church during King Charles’s reign. That’s interesting and maybe it speaks to Louise’s reticence to play the same games as her parents. Same with enlisting in the army – it could be her way of getting the hell away from the whole royal system. We’ll see if she really follows through. But it’s interesting… for years, the royalists have demanded that Louise become a working royal ASAP and she’s like “nope, not doing it.” Louise did go to Trooping this year though.

King Charles got booed at Trooping the Colour & Republic staged another protest

The vibes were definitely weird at this year’s Trooping the Colour. It literally rained on King Charles’s parade, the reappearance of the Princess of Wales is just as mysterious as her disappearance, Prince William seemed especially closed off, and we also saw all three Wales kids together for the first time in six months. Other notable moments: Princess Anne and Prince Edward both wore their honorary military dress uniforms and rode on horseback in the parade; Lady Louise was allowed on the balcony with her parents, but her brother James, formerly Lord Severn and currently the Earl of Wessex, was not included at any point.

While the Princess of Wales’s reappearance got a lot of attention and people were analyzing her healthy-seeming appearance, I’d just like to note that King Charles looked really thin, drawn and tired at Trooping. Buckingham Palace has made it perfectly clear that he still has cancer, although they say his treatment is going well and that’s why he’s been keeping up a public schedule for much of the past two months.

Something else happened at Trooping: the king was booed and Republic staged another “Not My King” demonstration. It’s been a while since we’ve seen a big Republic protest, although they said several months ago that they’re still committed to protesting the monarchy. I think the last big one was for the opening of Parliament last year? Although they did protest outside the Royal Maundy service in March of this year, which Queen Camilla attended without her husband.

The Windsors’ Easter guest list was slimmed down this year, slimmed down like the number of working royals in the family. King Charles only allowed one of his nephews to come to church, and that was James, the 16-year-old Earl of Wessex. James’s older sister Lady Louise did not go to church, and I thought perhaps that Charles had banned Louise and all of his other nieces and nephews. But the Mail claims that Louise was probably still in Scotland, where she attends St. Andrew’s. Hm. I doubt that, but sure. While King Charles clearly doesn’t want his nieces and nephews to do any work on behalf of the crown – please, they might steal the king’s thunder! – the British media continues to try to convince Prince William that he needs to bring all of his cousins into the “working royal” fold. Especially Lady Louise.

As the British monarchy has faced health crises in past months – with both King Charles and the Princess of Wales undergoing cancer treatment – key players have stepped up. Among the royal family the Princess Royal, her brother the Duke of Edinburgh, and his wife Sophie, appear to have ramped up their public appearances and engagements. And amid them, one young member could be set for key role in the Firm’s future – Lady Louise Windsor.

Writing in his Palace Confidential newsletter, the Daily Mail’s Diary Editor Richard Eden expressed that contribution from the Duke of Edinburgh and his family ‘has never been more important’.

‘Although way down the line of succession, in 14th place, the Duke of Edinburgh is busier, and more prominent, than ever as he carries out duties while his eldest brother, King Charles, is undergoing treatment for cancer,’ he said last month. ‘Edward and his wife, Sophie, are often overlooked because they don’t seem to court attention from the media and appear happy to undertake their numerous royal engagements and foreign visits quietly and without fuss.’

He continued: ‘In my opinion, another great service the couple could do for the country would be to encourage their children, Lady Louise and James, the Earl of Wessex, to become working royals when the time is right. Louise, 20, is in her second year at St Andrews University, while James, 16, will sit his GCSE exams this year. When Prince William becomes King, I hope that he will follow the example of his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, and ask his cousins, including Lady Louise and James, to share royal duties with him.’

‘Hopefully, William will realise that a “slimmed-down” monarchy wouldn’t safeguard the institution, as some claim, but would lead to its irrelevance and eventual death. I mean, in this very narrow case, Eden is actually correct. Which is why Charles and William will refuse! Huevo is just like his father – terribly afraid that someone will steal his thunder or get more attention in any way. Besides, as I’ve said about Louise this whole time – it’s not clear she wants any part of royal life. She’s not like her mother. The heightened emotions around the coverage of King Charles’s cancer makes sense to me – he’s the head of state, he only became king seventeen months ago, he waited decades to become king, etc. What I don’t get is the increasingly hysterical coverage in the British media about the lack of working royals. Charles and Prince William have endlessly previewed their visions for a monarchy which does fewer events and has a significant decrease in visibility. You think Charles’s slimmed-down monarchy is dangerously tiny? Just wait for William’s version, when he kicks everybody out of the royal properties and demands that people only pay attention to him and his kids. The idea that various younger royals need to be “recruited” into the working-royal ranks is a purely media invention. Charles doesn’t want it, neither does William. But please, let’s hear again how the York princesses should be “given” royal duties.

It is time for minor royals to step up and rally around King Charles following his cancer diagnosis and the Princess of Wales’ health issues, experts have said, amid warnings the monarchy is looking ‘very threadbare’. The departure of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and the disgrace of Prince Andrew means there are not enough young royals to take on public duties and relieve the pressure on senior members of the family such as the Queen and Prince William, experts claim.

It is now feared that unless less senior royals such as Lady Louise Windsor and her mother Sophie and Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie step up, the royal family will not be able to hold as many events or support as many charities as they have previously.

‘All of a sudden with these health problems we have it’s looking very, very threadbare,’ royal commentator Phil Dampier told MailOnline. With other working royals such as Queen Camilla and the Princess Royal being in their mid-70s, he fears there are few younger royals able to pick up the slack. ‘It’s all fallen really to a great extent to William and Kate and you do sometimes wonder if the stress of that knowledge and all the problems with Harry and Meghan have contributed to the pressure that Kate has felt under,’ he said.

Mr Dampier said that although Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie could be brought in ‘for minor duties’, their father Prince Andrew’s ties to paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein make their involvement ‘more difficult’ for the family. Instead, he praised the Duchess of Edinburgh Sophie for a doing a ‘very good job’, adding he would like to see her ‘upping her game and doing a bit more’.

‘I certainly think there could be a very good role for their daughter Louise Windsor, who has previously chosen not to take a title,’ he added. ‘Everyone who knows her says she’s extremely personable and very intelligent and she would do a very, very good job.’

Richard Fitzwilliam added that there is currently ‘tremendous pressure on Prince William’ as he highlighted the lack of royals able to take on extra work. He said: ‘The dangers of a slimmed-down monarchy are obvious because of what we’ve just seen: Catherine won’t be doing anything until at least after Easter. It’s a tremendous pressure on Prince William as his father has cancer and his wife is recovering from abdominal surgery, and he will be expected to do more engagements. People forget that the royals are humans, in fact they’re only too human as we’ve just found out.’

Lady Louise Windsor is a 20-year-old college student who mostly eschews the spotlight and royal life. She should absolutely NOT leave college just so she can cut ribbons and be the young blood for this cadre of vampires. As for the Yorks… I’ve said for a while that Eugenie already has one foot out the door and I still believe that. I think that’s why they’re barely even talking about Eugenie as a potential working royal. Meanwhile, Beatrice has been auditioning for working-royal status for several years now. She would actually love to be included and I don’t know why Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace both refuse to let Bea take on some bread-and-butter royal events. But yeah… this isn’t about Bea or Eugenie or Louise. This is about an entire royal-media ecosystem facing irrelevance.

My take is that King Charles is actually happy-ish with the current arrangement of “working royals.” He knows that his heir and his heir’s wife are lazy dumbasses and they can’t walk and chew gum at the same time. He also knows that the rest of the working royals are as exciting as dry pieces of toast. But all of that is fine with him – he believes that royalty is zero-sum, that if someone else gets attention, it takes something away from him. He wants all of the attention, along with his wife. All of this has led to a fundamental schism between palace and press – four years after the Sussexit, the British media has buyer’s remorse and they’re dying for some excitement. All of which means there’s been a low-key campaign to convince Charles to make various royal women into “working royals.” Behold, this hilarious story:

The Royal Family have been holding emergency meetings over potentially calling up Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice as working royals. King Charles has slimmed down the Royal Family during his first 12 months as monarch. Queen Camilla, Prince William, Princess Kate, Princess Anne, Prince Edward and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh are the working members of the Royal Family that King Charles has been calling upon to carry out engagements.

Prince Harry, Meghan Markle and Prince Andrew are former senior members of the Royal Family who no longer perform duties for the Firm.

There is now a shortage of royals to attend engagements and this has led to criticism of the monarchy. The Duke of York’s daughters Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie are currently not working members of the Royal Family, but according to a source, the possibility is being considered.

The source told Ok!: “Emergency meetings have been held to come up with a solution to fulfil the growing number of royal engagements both here in the UK and abroad. There needs to be some younger blood to reach the younger generation and the only candidates available are Beatrice and Eugenie.”

Beatrice clearly wants to be a working royal, Eugenie not so much. Eugenie is already “half-out” and living primarily in Portugal. I would actually believe that Charles could be talked into allowing Beatrice to “work” in some capacity. But no, he’s not holding emergency meetings about it. Meanwhile, they’re also trying to say that poor Lady Louise must become a working royal too:

Again, this is a reflection of a disagreement between palace and press – Charles doesn’t want anyone else, especially not any young princesses who might take attention away from any neighing winebag. But the British media is getting absolutely desperate. Pretty soon they might actually have to – gasp – report on what’s really happening in this tragic institution. As for Lady Louise, she seems like a nice, unsophisticated young woman. This particular story is a favorite briefing from Louise’s mother.

Last week, King Charles and Queen Camilla confirmed the names of their pages, the teens and preteens who would act as little ceremonial helpers during the coronation. Camilla got her way – her grandchildren have all been included as pages, as has one of Rose Hanbury’s sons. Prince George is the youngest kid included, and generally, it seems as if the goal is to get pages around the age of 13-15 years old. Which means it’s pretty odd that King Charles didn’t include his youngest nephew James, Count Severn/Earl of Wessex, right? James is only 15 years old, the ideal age. It feels like Charles gave Sophie and Edward the Edinburgh title and now he wants to completely ignore them and their children. Speaking of, Charles is apparently making a point of not inviting James or Lady Louise on the balcony for his coronation.

The finale of King Charles’s Coronation will see the royals gather on the Buckingham Palace balcony – but spots are tight. Like at the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, the monarch has limited balcony appearances to just working royals only – meaning there is no place for his son Prince Harry or daughter-in-law Meghan Markle if they decide to attend.

Among those landing a place are of course the Prince and Princess of Wales and their children as well as the King’s brother Prince Edward and his wife Sophie, the new Duchess of Edinburgh. But unlike Trooping the Colour at last year’s Jubilee – it appears there is no place for their children Lady Louise Windsor and James, the new Earl of Wessex.

The late Queen made an exception to her rule for her youngest grandchildren Louise, now 19 and a student at St Andrews University, and 15-year-old James to be on the balcony. But now it appears that the King won’t be making an exception for them again come May 6.

Speaking on the Mirror’s royal podcast Pod Save The King, the Mirror’s royal editor Russell Myers said: “I think it is interesting that the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh’s children won’t be there because we did see them on the balcony during Trooping the Colour during the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee last year. However, documents that I have seen, it is there in black and white that they were not part of the plans. Some may say that James has just been given this promotion to Earl of Wessex, Lady Louise is now 19 she’s now been seen at a couple of engagements with her parents. We know she had a huge bond with the late Duke of Edinburgh but they are not working royals so it doesn’t make sense to put them front and centre if Charles wants to let people see this vision [slimmed down monarchy] in the flesh.”

Detailed plans seen by The Mirror reveal how the King has chosen to say thanks for the nation alongside a select few royals who have dedicated their lives to public service, while also showing “the heartbeat and future of his family”. Future king and queen, Prince William and Kate will appear with their three children – Prince George, nine; Princess Charlotte, seven and Prince Louis, four.

The final group of 15 shows there is no place for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, should they even decide to attend the coronation. Charles’s trusted lieutenant and beloved sister, Princess Anne, will be by the King’s side with her husband Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence. A source with knowledge of the plans said: “The King has been very clear who he wants to represent the monarchy. There is little room for sentiment, this is a State occasion, not a family occasion and it is right that only the working members of the family are there at the big public moment.”

The King also insisted on some of his mother’s most trusted and loyal servants and family members to be included, despite their days as working royals being numbered. The Duke of Kent, 87, a working royal and first cousin of both the late Queen and Prince Philip, will also attend alongside his sister Princess Alexandra, 86. The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester have also been asked by the King to join him and Camilla.

“There is little room for sentiment, this is a State occasion, not a family occasion”– Camilla demanded that her grandchildren act as pages and not the children of aristocrats, which was the tradition. Charles is also deciding (sentimentally) to include the Glouchesters, Princess Alexandra and the Duke of Kent? It sounds like it’s less about sentimentality or lack thereof and Charles is just picking and choosing which old, white members of the family he wants on the balcony. There’s no rhyme or reason to it, they’re just staggering from one made-up excuse to the next to explain why Meghan and Harry are not welcome, and somehow Louise and James are getting some of the blowback too.
