Tom Holland on how his epic Rihanna lip sync battle happened

Whenever Tom Holland and Zendaya are in the news cycle, Tom’s famous Lip Sync Battle performance inevitably starts trending. You know the one I’m talking about. Tom starts out doing his best Gene Kelly impersonation as he dances and lip syncs to “Singin’ in the Rain.” Then, midway through, he changes into a black corset with hot pants, a wig, and fishnets before tearing it up to Rihanna’s “Umbrella.” I’ll embed the video below. It is guaranteed to cheer you up on a rainy day (pun intended).

Tom was the guest on the most recent Scrambled with Gordon Ramsey. While they were chatting and making spicy fried chicken sandwiches, Gordon brought up that epic Lip Sync Battle routine. Tom said that no matter what else he does, his “Umbrella” performance is the thing that he gets asked about the most. He also revealed how the whole thing came about, from choreography to fishnets to getting rained on.

It’s safe to say that Tom Holland’s Lip Sync Battle performance is one of the greatest videos of all time.

As I’m sure you know, Tom channeled Rihanna in a short black wig and fishnet stockings as he put on an incredible performance of her hit song “Umbrella.” Tom was competing against his now-fiancé, Zendaya, whose performance of Bruno Mars’s “24K Magic” was super tame* in comparison to his “Singin’ in the Rain” X “Umbrella” mashup.

In fact, when Tom underwent a quick outfit change as the song “Umbrella” began playing, Zendaya was filmed looking super shocked with her hands covering her mouth as she watched her Spider-Man costar strut his stuff.

Now reflecting on the iconic performance, Tom has revealed that he and Zendaya actually agreed beforehand that they would keep their performances super chilled — which would perhaps explain her memorable reaction.

“Zendaya and I, we were chatting at the time about what we were gonna do. And we had agreed that we would take it easy,” Tom told chef Gordon Ramsay in a recent YouTube video.

Naturally, Gordon was super shocked by Tom’s admission. “What?!” he said, prompting Tom to continue, “That was the agreement. Like, ‘I’m not gonna do anything crazy, you’re not gonna do anything crazy, we’re just gonna keep it nice and easy breezy.”

“And then when I was working with the creative team, coming up with the ideas, they kind of pitched this ‘Umbrella’ thing. And as we were rehearsing, it got crazier and crazier. And the rain machine came in, and then I was like, ‘Fuck it, I wanna wear fishnets and do this. And I want a wig, and a quick change and stuff,’” Tom recalled.

When Gordon asked what Tom’s family said about the performance, the Spider-Man actor admitted that his dad wasn’t quite on board.

“When I told my dad, he was like, ‘Son, I don’t think that’s a good idea. I don’t think you should do that,’” Tom shared. “I was like, ‘No, Dad, it’ll be really fun, like I’m gonna have a good time.’”

Tom then explained, “I think he was just… At that time in my career, he was very worried about me becoming too famous too quickly. So he was really keen for me to not do extra TV shows that I didn’t have to do, to try and maintain that part of my childhood.”

[From Buzzfeed]

I love hearing behind-the-scenes stuff like that. It’s so funny that it started out small and just spiraled into this huge viral sensation. Thank goodness Tom didn’t listen to his dad’s concerns. I’ve probably watched that video a dozen times over the last eight years and I always chuckle whenever I see Zendaya’s reaction to Tom’s performance. Obviously, she wasn’t mad that he didn’t keep it “nice and breezy” because they got together sometime after that. Someone once commented that you can see “the moment” that Zendaya fell for Tom, and I totally agree. I’m pretty sure that’s the moment that the entire Internet fell for Tom, too, lol. He’s talented, he can gyrate, and he’s not afraid of getting wet. What’s not to love?

Tom was trending on social media this past weekend for a different reason. Spider-Man: Brand New Day started filming in Scotland, and there were a lot of pictures showing Tom in what appears to be a new Spider-Man costume. Technically, it wasn’t a new suit, but a nicer-looking version of the homemade one that Peter Parker had at the end of No Way Home. The “big” deal was that the pics showed Tom’s unedited bulge. Allegedly, it’s someone’s job to edit Tom’s bulge down while he’s wearing the Spidey suit. I didn’t know that was a job someone could have, but I’d like to know how to apply for it.

Here’s Tom’s Lip Sync Battle.

Tom Holland and Zendaya got matching tattoos ahead of their engagement

Like most of you, I was delighted to hear the news that Zendaya and Tom Holland got engaged over the holidays. I love those two and wish them nothing but the absolute best. It’s been a nice palate cleanser to see all of the video clips people have put together of the two of them throughout the years. I will never get tired of watching clips of Tom’s Umbrella dance from Lip Sync Battle. Well, the adorableness doesn’t stop there. Tom and Zendaya also got matching tattoos! A tattoo artist confirmed that T&Z visited her tattoo parlor in Boston on the night before Thanksgiving to get ink of each other’s initials.

Tom Holland and Zendaya made their mark on one another before getting engaged. The celebrity couple, both 28, got matching tattoos of each other’s initials Nov. 27 at Boston Tattoo Company on Newbury Street, and the artist who did the custom designs had nothing but wonderful things to say about the pair.

“They were lovely to meet and it was a lot of fun!” Lily Jarnryd tells PEOPLE exclusively.

Zendaya got a small “t” tattoo just underneath her armpit, while her fiancé went with an equally discreet “z” on top of his ribcage.

The pair, who first starred together in 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, went public with their relationship in 2021. On Jan. 6, PEOPLE confirmed Holland and the Dune: Part Two actress were engaged. TMZ was first to report the news, adding that the Uncharted actor proposed at the home of one of Zendaya’s family members between the Christmas and New Year holidays.

The Challengers star cheekily debuted her engagement while walking the red carpet at the 2025 Golden Globes, where she was nominated for best performance by a female actor in a motion picture musical or comedy. At the event, she stunned in a strapless Louis Vuitton custom burnt orange satin dress paired with matching pointed-toe pumps. Zendaya accessorized with what appeared to be a 5.02-carat East-West Cushion Diamond Button Back Ring from Jessica McCormack, listed in the engagement section on the jewelry brand’s website, on her ring finger.

“He’s always been crazy about her. He always knew she was the one. They have something very special,” a source told PEOPLE of Holland proposing to the Euphoria star.

“Tom’s always had this sweet way of letting the world know that Zendaya is his. Now, it’s official — she really is!” the insider added.

The couple’s Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: No Way Home costar Marisa Tomei also congratulated them, writing “Congrats you two, xoxo ????,” over a photo of Holland and Zendaya at one of the film’s premieres on her Instagram Stories.

Speaking to GQ in November 2021, Holland and Zendaya explained why they keep their relationship out of the spotlight.

“One of the downsides of our fame is that privacy isn’t really in our control anymore, and a moment that you think is between two people that love each other very much is now a moment that is shared with the entire world,” Holland said.

“The equal sentiment [we both share] is just that when you really love and care about somebody, some moments or things, you wish were your own,” Zendaya added.

[From People]

All together now: Awwwwwww!!! This is really sweet and I love that they got small, subtle tattoos with just their first initials rather than something big and elaborate. It fits their lowkey vibes. There’s a picture from the Golden Globes that gives us a peak of Zendaya’s “T” tattoo under her armpit, on her upper left rib cage. It is discreet. I wouldn’t have noticed it if it hadn’t been pointed out to me. Speaking of their lowkey vibes, I totally understand their reasoning for keeping their relationship private and having their own moments without the public getting all up in their business. I get the feeling that they’re going to have a private, traditional wedding sometime next year that we won’t find out about until we see pictures of Zendaya’s sure to be gorgeous dress on an exclusive cover of People.

Engagements Tom Holland zendaya

Zendaya & Tom Holland are engaged, he proposed over the holidays

Zendaya turned up to the Golden Globes solo, meaning without her long-time boyfriend Tom Holland. Tom rarely comes with her to those kinds of events, but the Globes this year were different. Zendaya wore a large diamond ring on her left hand ring finger, and she was seen showing the ring to various people. The vibe was definitely “Zendaya was telling people about an engagement.” Well, happy news: that’s exactly what it was. Tom Holland proposed to Zendaya over the holidays.

Zendaya and Tom Holland are taking the next step in their relationship … because they’re engaged!!!

Sources close to the couple tell TMZ … the “Spider Man” star popped the question between Christmas and New Year’s … dropping to one knee in a very intimate setting in one of Zendaya’s family homes in the United States.

We’re told Tom didn’t make a huge show of the engagement — it wasn’t a big, over-the-top proposal — instead, it was very romantic and intimate. Our sources say the family wasn’t there … it was just a sweet moment between Tom and Zendaya.

[From TMZ]

TMZ also says that the diamond is huge, and I agree, it looks really big. That was the one thing which made me wonder if Zendaya had simply borrowed a big ring, because I didn’t know if Tom was the kind of guy to actually buy a gigantic rock. Then again, Tom has been all-in with Zendaya for years. He wants to lock this down. Speaking of, People Mag’s sources said that Tom has wanted to propose for “a while.” Man’s been ready to propose since their first date, let’s be real.

Zendaya and Tom Holland are taking their relationship to the next level! The Spider-Man costars, both 28, are engaged, a family source confirmed to PEOPLE. TMZ was first to report the news. According to the outlet, Holland proposed at one of Zendaya’s family homes over the holidays.

A separate source told PEOPLE that “everyone close to them knew an engagement was happening” — just not when. The source said Holland had been keen to propose to Zendaya “for a while.”

“He’s always been crazy about her. He always knew she was the one. They have something very special,” the source said, noting that Holland shared the happy news with friends around New Year’s.

As for tying the knot, the couple plans to take their time. “They will just enjoy things for now and won’t rush a wedding,” the source added. “They are both busy with work projects.”

In the meantime, the pair are soaking up the special moment. “Tom’s always had this sweet way of letting the world know that Zendaya is his. Now, it’s official — she really is!” the source told PEOPLE.

[From People]

I wonder if they will rush a wedding, actually. Or maybe just elope. I have no particular vibe on what their wedding will look like, but I’m sure Zendaya’s wedding gown will be stunning, no matter what. And in case you’re wondering about Zendaya’s family, they’re reportedly super-supportive of her relationship with Tom and everyone gets along really well. TMZ reports that Tom even spoke to Z’s dad, Kazembe Ajamu Coleman, “months ago” to ask for his blessing to propose.

Christopher Nolan Movies Tom Holland zendaya

Zendaya to star alongside Tom Holland in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming movie

If you’re a fan of Zendaya and Tom Holland and want to see them in a movie together that doesn’t belong in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, then I have some great news for you! Late last week, Deadline and Variety announced that the couple have both been cast in Christopher Nolan’s next film. Tom’s casting was made public in October, so Zendaya is a new addition. Details about the movie itself are scarce, but Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway are also co-starring in this untitled movie. In addition to directing it, Nolan is also writing the film, which will begin filming in early 2025 and currently has a release date of July 17, 2026.

Zendaya is reuniting with Tom Holland on the big screen, this time at the direction of Christopher Nolan. The Dune and Challengers actress, 28, will be joining Nolan’s next film at Universal alongside Anne Hathaway, according to Deadline and Variety. The movie, which also stars Matt Damon, will be released in July 2026, the outlets reported.

Details of the film’s plot are reportedly under wraps.

Holland, 28, and Zendaya, who confirmed their romantic relationship in 2021, have previously teamed up for 2017’s Spider-Man Homecoming, 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home and 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Zendaya and Hathaway, 41, previously worked together on set of a Bulgari ad in 2022, while Hathaway and Nolan’s working relationship dates back to 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises and 2014’s Interstellar.

Nolan’s next movie will mark his follow-up to the 2023 blockbuster Oppenheimer, which also featured a performance from Damon, 54. Multiple outlets, including Deadline, The Hollywood Reporter and Variety, reported last month that Holland was in talks to star in the director’s next movie alongside Damon. All three outlets indicated Nolan’s next movie would begin filming in early 2025.

On Good Morning America last month, Holland said of the Nolan project, “I’m incredibly excited. And, obviously, honored, but that’s all I can say because, to be honest, that’s all I know.” The star has also indicated that a new Spider-Man movie will begin filming next year.

Earlier this year, Hathaway spoke with Vanity Fair for a cover story, when she detailed how Nolan, 54, helped her career during a period of online scrutiny in the 2010s. After her Oscar win for 2012’s Lés Miserables, Hathaway said many people “wouldn’t give” her roles “because they were so concerned about how toxic my identity had become online.”

“I had an angel in Christopher Nolan, who did not care about that and gave me one of the most beautiful roles I’ve had in one of the best films that I’ve been a part of,” she said of Nolan and Interstellar.

“I don’t know if he knew that he was backing me at the time, but it had that effect,” she added. “And my career did not lose momentum the way it could have if he hadn’t backed me.”

[From People]

It’s kinda crazy that Tom signed on to do the movie without knowing much about it at all. I mean, I’d do that too because…well, duh. A Nolan film is guaranteed Oscar bait. I’m excited to see what his and Zendaya’s roles will be and hope that they get to interact on screen together as characters that are completely different than we’re used to seeing them play. I’m sure both will kick butt in whatever part they’re cast as. We need more details about the movie, stat!

As for what Anne says regarding Nolan being her “angel,” I actually finally watched Interstellar for the first time last month, and OMG! I cried so hard throughout several different parts. Anne, Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain, and Michael Caine are all fantastic in it. It’s one of Mr. Rosie’s favorite movies, but I really did not like Inception and thought The Dark Knight Rises was just meh, so I avoided all Nolan movies until Oppenheimer. I feel like I’m now back on the Chris Nolan train. I’m excited to watch Anne, Zendaya, and Tom in his next flick.

Tom Holland launches a non-alcoholic beer line, Bero, after a year of sobriety

In January 2022, Tom Holland decided to participate in Dry January. Because that month was so difficult to get through, Tom decided to keep his newfound sobriety going, eventually challenging himself to not drink until his birthday on June 1. During this time period, his doctor had also raised concerns about his liver, and Tom began to cone to terms with the realization that he had drinking problem. June 1 came and went, and after a year of sobriety, Tom decided to give up alcohol for good. To celebrate two years of sobriety, Tom decided to launch his own non-alcoholic beer line, called Bero. Right now, Bero has three types of NA beer: Edge Hill Hazy IPA, Kingston Golden Pils, and Noon Wheat.

In an announcement, the Spider-Man star, 28, said that he had aimed to create a drink that “reflected my lifestyle and values”.

There are currently three drinks available in Holland’s Bero brand: Kingston Golden Pils, Edge Hill Hazy IPA and Noon Wheat. Each of the product names features a reference to the actor’s life, with several nods to his UK roots. Kingston Golden Pils is a nod to his hometown, while Edge Hill name checks his primary school. Noon Wheat is named after his dog, Noon.

Bero currently “ships to most US states” according to an Instagram post, and UK distribution is “in the works”, with the brand promising that British fans “should be able to get your hands on Bero before the end of the year”.

In an interview with Forbes, the Marvel star revealed that he had found his first year of sobriety “really difficult”, and suggested that he might have found the transition to an alcohol-free life “easier” if he’d been able to drink products like these.

He also opened up about his decision to quit drinking, noting that he was previously “the type of person that, when I’d had one beer, I couldn’t just have one beer” and admitting: “I knew I’d had a bit of a problem for a while”.

He initially decided to take part in Dry January, the health initiative that encourages the public to give up alcohol for the first month of the year, in 2022. After finding the experience “really tough”, he decided to stick to this new regime into February and March. Then he promised himself that he wouldn’t drink until 1 June, his birthday. However, he started to notice the benefits and “feel great”, and hasn’t drunk alcohol since.

“It was very difficult, it has been the hardest thing I’ve ever done, and arguably the greatest achievement of my life,” he said. “I’m very proud to be sober today.”

In an interview with Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast last year, the Uncharted star revealed that when he first embarked on Dry January, he struggled to socialise without alcohol.

“I felt like I couldn’t go to the pub and have a lime soda,” he said. “I couldn’t go out for dinner. I was really, really struggling and I started to really worry that maybe I had an alcohol problem.”

Quitting alcohol, he added, left him able to “sleep better” and “handle problems better”.

“Things that would go wrong on set that would normally set me off, I could take in my stride,” he explained. “I had such better mental clarity. I felt healthier, I felt fitter.”

[From The Independent]

I’ve read Tom’s story a few times over the past few years, and I think it’s so relatable for so many people. I’m always impressed by his willpower and determination, especially that he quit drinking on his own. That must have been really difficult and I hope he had some support from family and friends. It’s great that he’s bringing more attention to a sober lifestyle through Bero. My husband and I do Dry January every year. NA beverages have come a long way since I was pregnant 11 years ago and tried some absolutely gross alcohol-free wine that my friend recommended. I like the Athletic beer brand. It’s good for hitting the spot when you don’t want to drink alcohol, but still want to feel like you’re having a “drink.” They sell it at a lot of restaurants near me, too, which I appreciate. I will absolutely try Bero when it comes out.

If you’re struggling to moderate your alcohol intake like Tom was, please know that you aren’t alone. So many people are struggling with alcohol abuse. Over the years, CB has given a lot of really great resources, including Smart Recovery.

Injuries Tom Holland zendaya

Tom Holland got hit in the forehead by a golf ball, was saved by his ‘wooly hat’

While Zendaya was busy ruling the fashion game at the Met Gala, her boyfriend, Tom Holland, was recovering from a golf-game-gone-wrong in Scotland. On Monday, Tom shared a picture to his Instagram Stories of a head injury that he got while playing golf with his family and friends a few days earlier. During the game, his friend Alex Roberts hit a golf ball from 80 yards away that accidentally hit Tom on his right forehead. Ouch!

Thankfully, the ball hit him in an area that missed any particularly sensitive spots. However, he did drop to the ground and was bleeding, so he was taken to the hospital to get checked out. According to a Patreon post by his dad, Dominic, Tom was also lucky to be wearing a “wooly hat” that “offered some protection.”

Tom Holland’s family game of golf left a mark! The Spider-Man: No Way Home actor, 27, posted a photo of a painful head injury from playing golf with his family in Scotland on his Instagram Stories on Monday, May 6. Holland shared a close-up shot of a large bump on the right side of his forehead with a bloodied circle imprint on top from when the golf ball connected with his head.

“Who ever said golf isn’t a contact sport is full of s—,” Tom wrote in the caption. “You can almost see the dimples.” The actor then tagged his dad Dominic Holland’s Patreon page where he shared a funny account of what caused his son’s injury in a blog post four days prior.

Dominic explained that “a golf ball did hit his head,” though it was not a serious injury.

“In fact, it was hit by a sand wedge from 80 yards albeit by a scratch golfer who should have known better and frankly been more accurate,” he continued. “The offending player was Alex Roberts, a close friend of Tom’s … without knowing that his most important and highly valuable friend was off the green to his left.”

“Whack. The ball struck Tom on the right of his forehead. Had it been just a few cm’s to his left or right … It was a great shock and it certainly hurt, hence why Tom hit the turf as though he’d been shot,” Dominic explained, adding that the actor’s “woolly hat offered some protection.”

“[Tom was] lucky then to be playing in Scotland (the home of golf) in April when woolly hats are mandatory for survival,” Tom’s dad joked. He then shared that his son was “dispatched to hospital for some checks.”

Dominic jokily concluded in his post, “Something else about the accuracy of this blog … Firstly, Alex, (Tom’s friend) … is no longer in Tom’s inner cohort. Relegated to the outer circle. Shall we say, not inside the ropes.”

[From People]

I’m so glad that Tom is okay! That’s so scary, what a freak accident. The potential of that stuff happening to my husband or kids always ignites some mild anxiety on my part. I got hit by a line drive while playing in a softball league back when I was 12 or 13 and it was right to the mouth, where I was rocking a full set of braces, haha. Thankfully, I also didn’t need any stitches, but my sister needed facial stitches from a plastic surgeon from an injury playing lacrosse in high school. Oh, memory lane, good times. But seriously, knowing that it could have been bad if Tom’s hit had been mere centimeters in either direction is just so unnerving.

But back to the Zendaya and the Met Gala! Although Tom wasn’t there, – I wonder if his doctors advised him not to travel with a head injury – he did take a moment to make a rare-ish display of public affection for his girl. On Tuesday, he posted two pictures of Zendaya, one of her in each of her outfits. The post was simply captioned with the “????????????” heart eyes emoji. Let’s all give one big collective “Awwwwww.” They are so darn cute. I don’t think they’ve walked a red carpet together since the Spider-Man: No Way Home premiere. I don’t know if they’re following the Eva Mendes/Ryan Gosling method of privacy, (side note: The Fall Guy is SO much fun, go see it!) but I do hope we get some big fashion moment from the two of them together, either at next year’s Met Gala or some other event. That would be so epic.

People: Zendaya & Tom Holland have talked about marriage, ‘that is a reality’

Here are some photos of Zendaya this week in New York, making the final push for Challengers (which is out today). I love this white, wide-legged jumpsuit – so chic, so flattering. Zendaya and her Challengers costars have spent the past month (or longer) zigzagging around the world, premiering and promoting the film. Zendaya’s boyfriend Tom Holland hasn’t been around that much in the past month, mostly because he’s working on a play in London (Romeo & Juliet). He did attend the tennis tournament in Indian Wells with Zendaya last month, which was really cool. Tom and Zendaya didn’t walk any red carpets for the film though, which is fine with me – I never doubted that they were still together, and they seem to keep their work stuff separate. But I still had questions about their relationship – they’ve been together for years already, and it wouldn’t surprise me if they’re talking about their future in a real way. Well, People Mag has an exclusive.

Tom Holland and Zendaya may be envisioning a future together as husband and wife.

“There has been talk of marriage, and that is a reality,” a source tells PEOPLE.

The British actor and the Emmy-winning Euphoria star, both 27, met making their trilogy of Spider-Man movies together. Since then, they’ve kept their off-camera romance mostly private.

“They are not the kind of stars who put their lives together out there on social media for the most part,” explains the source.

“Both are private,” says the source, who adds that attention on them while in the public eye “has never been easy or comfortable for either of them.”

For, Zendaya, whose film Challengers hits theaters this weekend, and Holland, who stars in Romeo and Juliet on London’s West End in May, “work is important to both and that keeps them busy now,” adds the source. Reps for both actors did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s requests for comment.

[From People]

Aw. I hope they do get married! But only if that’s what they really want. My feeling has always been that Tom is just completely, crazy-in-love with Zendaya. And she loves him too, but she’s more reticent about it, maybe? We think of both Zendaya and Tom as so young, like they’re both just “kids” – but they’re both 27 and they’ve been together for so long. It would feel natural if they just quietly got married at some point.
