Cottagecore Aesthetic

Understanding the Cottagecore Aesthetic

Before we dive into the specifics of how to dress cottagecore, let’s first understand what cottagecore is and where it comes from.

Introduction to Cottagecore

Cottagecore is an aesthetic that draws inspiration from rural life, nature, and vintage aesthetics. It’s a way of expressing a longing for a simpler and more idyllic lifestyle, away from the hustle and bustle of modern society. Cottagecore is often associated with activities such as gardening, baking, sewing, reading, and picnicking.

The essence of cottagecore is to appreciate the beauty and joy of the ordinary and the mundane. It’s about finding happiness in the small things, like the smell of fresh flowers, the taste of homemade jam, or the feel of soft linen. It’s also about embracing imperfections and flaws, such as wrinkles, stains, and patches, as part of the charm and character of it.

Historical Influences and the Resurgence of Interest in the Style

Cottagecore History

Cottagecore is not a new phenomenon. It has roots in various historical and cultural movements, such as the Romanticism of the 18th and 19th centuries, the Arts and Crafts movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and the hippie and folk cultures of the 1960s and 1970s. These movements all shared a common theme of rejecting industrialization and urbanization, and celebrating nature, art, and craftsmanship.

Cottagecore has also been influenced by various literary and artistic works, such as the novels of Jane Austen, the paintings of Claude Monet, and the films of Studio Ghibli. These works often depict idyllic and pastoral scenes of rural life, with an emphasis on romance, nostalgia, and escapism.

Cottagecore has gained a resurgence of interest in recent years, especially among young people, thanks to the popularity of social media platforms such as Instagram, Pinterest, and TikTok. These platforms allow users to share their cottagecore-inspired photos, videos, and stories, and to connect with other like-minded people. Cottagecore has also been seen as a coping mechanism for the stress and uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, as it offers a sense of comfort, security, and hope.

Exploring Cottagecore Subgenres

This is not a monolithic aesthetic. It has many variations and subgenres, each with its own distinctive features and preferences. Here are some of the most common and popular subgenres of cottagecore, and how to dress accordingly.

Countrycore: The Rustic Cousin

Countrycore - Cottagecore Subgenre

Countrycore is a subgenre of cottagecore that focuses on the practical and functional aspects of rural life. It’s a style that embraces the rugged and rough textures of the countryside, such as denim, leather, and wool. Countrycore is often influenced by the American West, the British countryside, and the Australian outback.

To dress countrycore, you’ll need some key pieces, such as:

  • Denim: Denim is a staple of countrycore, as it’s durable, versatile, and easy to style. You can wear denim jeans, jackets, shirts, or skirts, in various washes and cuts. For a more vintage look, opt for high-waisted, straight-leg, or flared jeans, and pair them with a belt and boots.
  • Plaid: Plaid is another classic pattern of countrycore, as it adds some color and contrast to your outfit. You can wear plaid shirts, dresses, skirts, or scarves, in various colors and sizes. For a more cozy and casual look, layer a plaid shirt over a t-shirt or a sweater, and roll up the sleeves.
  • Work boots: Work boots are a must-have for countrycore, as they’re practical, comfortable, and stylish. You can wear work boots in various colors and materials, such as brown leather, black suede, or beige canvas. Core Elements of Cottagecore Fashion

    Natural Fabrics and Materials

    Cottagecore Fabrics and Materials

One of the most important elements of cottage core fashion is to choose natural fabrics and materials for your clothing and accessories. Natural fabrics and materials are those that are derived from plants or animals, such as linen, cotton, wool, silk, leather, or wood. These fabrics and materials are preferred for cottage core because they are more authentic, sustainable, and comfortable than synthetic ones. They also have a unique texture and quality that adds to the rustic and vintage feel of cottage core.

Some of the benefits of choosing natural fabrics and materials for cottagecore are:

    • They are breathable and regulate your body temperature, keeping you cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
    • They are durable and long-lasting, meaning you can wear them for years and even pass them down to future generations.
    • They are biodegradable and eco-friendly, meaning they don’t harm the environment or produce waste.
    • They are versatile and easy to style, meaning you can mix and match them with different colors and patterns.

Some of the drawbacks of choosing natural fabrics and materials for cottage core are:

    • They are more expensive and harder to find than synthetic ones, meaning you might have to invest more money and time in finding them.
    • They are more prone to wrinkles, stains, and damage, meaning you might have to take more care and maintenance in washing and storing them.
    • They are more sensitive to heat, moisture, and sunlight, meaning you might have to avoid exposing them to harsh conditions.

Another essential element is to choose a color palette that reflects the aesthetic. The color palette of cottage core is typically composed of earthy and pastel shades, such as beige, brown, green, yellow, pink, and blue. These colors are inspired by the natural elements of the countryside, such as the soil, the grass, the flowers, and the sky. These colors are also soothing and calming, creating a sense of harmony and serenity.

    • They are flattering and complementary to most skin tones, hair colors, and eye colors, meaning you can wear them with confidence and ease.
    • They are timeless and classic, meaning you can wear them for any season and occasion, and they won’t go out of style.
    • They are subtle and elegant, meaning you can wear them for a sophisticated and refined look, without being too flashy or loud.

Some of the drawbacks of choosing an earthy and pastel color palette for cottage core are:

    • They are more common and less distinctive than other colors, meaning you might have to add some contrast or interest to your outfit with patterns or accessories.
    • They are more prone to fading and discoloration, meaning you might have to wash and store them carefully to preserve their quality and appearance.
    • They are more susceptible to dirt and stains, meaning you might have to clean and spot-treat them more often.

This isn’t just a color; it’s a full-scale aesthetic, radiating calm and collected cool with every pixel. It’s no wonder that lifestyle and social media have fallen head over soft suede heels for it. Whether it’s your Instagram feed awash with pink tones or your cozy reading nook peppered with Millennial Pink cushions, this hue is about channeling a life where zen and zest coexist beautifully.

    Comparison and Combinations

Millennial Pink vs. Gen Z Purple

Both speak to their generations, but while Millennial Pink is akin to a chilled glass of rosé, Gen Z Purple is the electric buzz of a neon light. Millennial Pink is your Sunday self-care day; Gen Z Purple is Saturday night’s party. When it comes to dressing for occasions, think of Millennial Pink as your go-to for weddings and brunches, while Gen Z Purple takes the lead for concerts and art exhibits.

Millennial Pink and Green: A Match Made in Heaven

For a duo that screams designer chic without the designer price tag, try pairing Millennial Pink with shades of green. A pastel pink dress with emerald accessories, or a rose-toned top with olive pants, play up a contrast that’s both earthy and whimsically sophisticated.

Millennial Pink vs. Rose Gold and Baby Pink

Millennial Pink stands apart from its pinkish cousins with its muted, gravitating presence. Where Rose Gold gleams with glamour and Baby Pink sings a soft lullaby, Millennial Pink is the mature middle child, holding its own with quiet confidence. Use Rose Gold to glam up a night out and Baby Pink to tenderize a baby shower, but keep Millennial Pink as your versatile companion for just about every other chapter.

    Complementary Color Schemes

The beauty of Millennial Pink is in its adaptability – it’s like the social butterfly of the color spectrum. Navy blues, deep browns, and even metallics are game to buddy up with this demure darling. Creating a stylish palette means letting Millennial Pink flirt across the wheel, making friends with colors that allow it to truly shine.

    Conclusion

If there were ever a hue that captured the spirit of a generation, Millennial Pink would be waiting at the finish line with a trophy in hand. It’s more than just a splash of color – it’s a lifestyle, an attitude, and a canvas upon which to paint our modern fairytales. From wardrobe staples to whispered accents in our décor, Millennial Pink has proven its staying power, not as a fleeting fancy but as an enduring emblem of grace, poise, and a hint of upheaval. Embrace it, live it, wear it with pride, and may your life be touched with every delightful shade of pink.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the meaning of millennial pink?

Millennial pink is an unofficial term for a family of soft, light pink hues that includes everything from beige to salmon. It’s been popularized by Millennials who associate it with nostalgia, femininity, and calmness.

What is the Gen Z version of millennial pink?

Some possible candidates for the Gen Z version of millennial pink are neon green, lavender, or yellow. These colors are often seen as more vibrant, expressive, and diverse than the muted and neutral millennial pink.

Why millennial pink refuses to go away?

Millennial pink has been a dominant color in fashion, design, and media for nearly a decade, and it shows no signs of fading away. Some possible reasons for its longevity are its versatility, its appeal to both genders, its connection to social movements, and its ability to evoke positive emotions.

What is the psychology of millennial pink?

According to some experts, millennial pink is a color that reflects the values and attitudes of the Millennial generation. It is a color that is both playful and sophisticated, both nostalgic and modern, both feminine and gender-neutral. It is a color that suggests optimism, creativity, and harmony. It is also a color that can help reduce stress, promote relaxation, and inspire compassion.

What is the meaning of millennial grey?

Millennial grey is a loosely defined term, describing a matte light grey look that has popped up often in minimalist Airbnbs, IKEA furniture, recently renovated homes, and other products and spaces marketed towards Millenials. It is also a color that is associated with cheap and bland home decor, as well as a lack of personality and originality.

Is millennial pink warm or cool?

Millennial pink is a warm color, as it has a slight hint of peach, making it a rosier and cozier pink. Warm colors are generally more stimulating, inviting, and energetic than cool colors, which are more calming, soothing, and relaxing. However, millennial pink is also a soft and light color, which means it can also have a cooling effect, depending on the context and contrast. For example, millennial pink can look cooler when paired with darker or warmer colors, such as black, red, or orange.

Pink gives away 2,000 banned books at her concerts in Florida

Silken-voiced, dreamy eyed LeVar Burton has been advocating against book bans in partnership with PEN America. Now, in the middle of her Trustfall tour, Pink has also joined forces with PEN America, a group that fights for literary and human rights. Fans at her Florida concerts this week were treated to tote bags filled with banned books, coming in at 2,000 total free books for the week. And not a moment too soon, as PEN’s charts have Florida at more than double the number of book bans than the next highest state on the list, Texas. #BeLikableRon2024 might want to take some notes.

Pink on teaming up with PEN: “It’s confusing, it’s infuriating, it is censorship,” Pink said in an Instagram video announcing her action on Monday. The video, which also featured PEN America president Suzanne Nossel, has been liked more than 33,000 times. “Books have held a special joy for me from the time I was a child, and that’s why I am unwilling to stand by and watch while books are banned by schools,” Pink said in a PEN statement about the giveaway. “It’s especially hateful to see authorities take aim at books about race and racism and against LGBTQ authors and those of color. We have made so many strides toward equality in this country and no one should want to see this progress reversed. This is why I am supporting PEN America in its work and why I agree with them: no more banned books.”

Florida surpasses everyone in banned books: According to PEN America’s latest research, Florida surpassed Texas over the past academic year: There are more books banned in public school classrooms and libraries in the Sunshine State than any other state in the union. PEN America said it recorded 1,406 book ban cases in Florida, followed by 625 bans in Texas, 333 bans in Missouri, 281 bans in Utah, and 186 bans in Pennsylvania.” PEN also reported a 33% spike in book bans nationally.

Ron DeSantis lies: “Exposing the ‘book ban’ hoax is important because it reveals that some are attempting to use our schools for indoctrination… In Florida, pornographic and inappropriate materials that have been snuck into our classrooms and libraries to sexualize our students violate our state education standards. Florida is the education state and that means providing students with a quality education free from sexualization and harmful materials that are not age appropriate.”

    [From NPR]

Florida is the education state??Florida is the education state!! Reader, I fell out of my office wheelie chair reading that (and not in a home office, an office office, with people watching). It takes balls to lie like that, and I honestly did not think the twerp had ‘em. Florida, where students and teachers are fleeing en masse in what’s being called the great “brain drain.” Florida, where they’re implementing the offensive curriculum: “enslaved people developed skills for personal benefit.” Florida, where TV hosts are calling for the eradication of raccoons! That’s our education state! I’m in the hysterical laughter phase before the crash and sobbing commences.

Brava to Pink for spotlighting this crisis. And I don’t use that word carelessly. Cutting off access to knowledge and ideas is fundamental to authoritarian takeovers. PEN America has a Pink page up on their site with helpful info on the book titles being banned, the numbers by states, and how to press your elected officials to do something. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m dying to check out the over-sexualized content of one of these banned kids’ books: Girls Who Code.

Pink on Carey Hart: ‘If he loved me perfectly I would have nothing to say’

The iHeartRadio Music Awards took place on Monday. Pink received the Icon Award, which is great, but also kind of funny that an award show that isn’t even a decade old has an Icon award category. But Pink has been successfully turning out music for almost a quarter of a century, so I guess that works in pop culture math. She wore the Robert Wun ensemble above. I love the blazer and I love the idea of the pants, but the execution not as much. She brought her kids, daughter Willow in a pink tulle gown and high-top Doc Martens and son Jameson in a two-piece grey suit and white tennies. In Pink’s speech, she talked about her vulnerability and pledged not to be self-deprecating, which was her go-to defense. She thanked everyone who supported her and helped her get where she was. And then she thanked her husband, Carey Hart, by making a joke at his expense. Referring to the many times she’s written of their rocky times, Pink said, “if he loved me perfectly, I would have nothing to say.” Sometimes the truth hurts, I guess.

“Raise Your Glass” — Pink’s officially been crowned an icon!

“Thank you iHeart[Radio] for this moment. It has been said that miracles are often associated with icons,” she told the crowd before referencing her star-studded tribute performance from earlier in the night. “Kelly Clarkson singing with me, and Pat Benatar singing one of my songs, two of the greatest voices alive, being on stage, doing what I love with people that I love with all of my heart — and my babies in the audience — this feels like a Christmas miracle.”

Pink, 43, continued, “I usually do try to joke or be self-deprecating in these moments, but I want to be a better friend to myself tonight, so I would like to try and say something honest.”

“Every room I walk into, my heart walks in first. Every lyric that I write is my heart crying, raging hoping, screaming, pleading,” she said. “You have watched me do this, sifting through life’s messiness for almost 25 years. Some of you find what I do annoying, and some of you find it brave, and I just find it necessary.”

The performer then noted that people “are vulnerable from the time we’re born until the time we die, and many of us spend our entire lives running from that.”

“Vulnerability means the ability to be wounded. I have decided to make vulnerability my life’s work, and for those of you that have joined me on this adventure, I thank you from the bottom of my heart,” added Pink. “I’m grateful to be alive. I’m grateful I get to do this with my one precious life. Most of all, Willow and Jameson, I’m grateful to be your mama.”

She also thanked her manager Roger Davies before giving a cheeky shout-out to her husband and “muse” Carey Hart, as she’s written about the ups and downs of their relationship throughout her career.

    [From Yahoo!]

On the one hand, Pink has an entire catalogue charting the ups and downs of their relationship so there’s no reason not to acknowledge that reality. I don’t have a problem with a couple that admits things aren’t all sunshine and roses, it’s hard to find a relationship that is. I just find it funny that Pink made a point of saying she wasn’t got to be self-deprecating because she wanted to be “be a better friend to myself tonight” and then took a pot-shot at Carey instead.

However, I really liked Pink’s speech and took much of it to heart. “Some of you find what I do annoying, and some of you find it brave, and I just find it necessary,” not only spoke to me, I can absolutely see it in Pink. All of her music feels like it was never a choice of being made, that she had to get those thoughts out in the world. It also explains why so many of her interviews feel like TMI. It’s funny how that same motivation makes for such moving art but off-putting talking points. Anyway, congratulations to Icon Pink. I’m sure this heady status won’t slow her down, she’s likely got a lot more music in her.

Kelly Rowland defended Chris Brown with her whole chest at the AMAs

The American Music Awards were held last night and… yeah, I didn’t watch them, my bad. In my defense, my stomach wasn’t right and I threw up and I was just trying to rest and hydrate in the evening. Could I have also turned on the AMAs? Probably, but I didn’t, so that’s on me. You can see a list of winners here at CNN. There was also at least one scandalous/noteworthy moment, one which is dominating the post-AMA headlines. It involved Kelly Rowland, who attended the show as a presenter. She looked like a million bucks, and she was given a big presenting job: Favorite Male R&B Artist. Unfortunately for everyone, the winner of that AMA was Chris Brown.

Brown wasn’t even there – he was originally scheduled to perform at the AMAs as part of a Michael Jackson tribute, but the AMAs told him to stay home at the last minute (he was mad about it too). When Kelly announced his name, the audience booed the serial domestic abuser. Kelly told the audience: “Now Chris Brown is not here tonight so I’m accepting this award on his behalf… Excuse me… chill out. But I wanted to tell Chris, thank you so much for making great R&B music and I want to tell him thank you for being an incredible performer. I’ll take this award — bring it to you. I love you. Congratulations. And congratulations to all the nominees in this category.” A whole mess. This was a failure at every level, from Kelly saying that sh-t to the AMAs inviting Chris (then uninviting him), etc. Gross.

Taylor Swift skipped the red carpet, but here are some photos of her backstage. She wore a jumpsuit by The Blonds. She won a bunch of AMAs, like always. She actually won in all six of the categories in which she was nominated, making her the most-decorated AMA winner of all time, with forty AMAs overall.

More photos from the AMAs: Pink looked good, Dove Cameron’s look is a lot, Carrie Underwood’s legs are insane (even more insane than Pink’s legs!!) and Ellie Goulding is unrecognizable at this point.

    Grammys Pink

Pink yelled at Rolling Stone for skipping her in greatest Grammy performances list

I haven’t written about Pink in a long time. I’m not sure this is the story I wanted to come back with. Rolling Stone Magazine decided to put out a retrospective and list their opinion on the 25 Best Performances from the Grammys. The Grammys have been televised for 49 years (they’ve been around since 1959 but were not televised until 1973). That’s a lot of performances to pass judgment on. One would think if anyone is qualified to do it, it would be a music-devoted publication such as Rolling Stone. Pink does not agree. In possibly related news, Pink did not appear anywhere on their list of the 25 Best Performances. When RS posted their list to Instagram, Pink decided to respond to the snub in the comments by calling them irrelevant and sellouts.

“Bahahahaha you guys have been irrelevant since 1990,” she wrote in the comments on an Instagram post promoting the article.

She continued in the comments, “This is the magazine that used to feature people like John Lennon and Muddy Waters. Hunter S Thompson wrote political pieces- they put Tina Turner on their cover. Then they sold out and all credibility went to s**t when ‘style over substance’ and ‘revenue over authenticity’ went into play.”

Pink criticized the magazine for their current coverage and content, including writing about reality TV stars.

“That’s when Snooki became acceptable coverage. Give me a f–king break. Do your homework. You don’t have to like me or my music or anything about me- and believe me I could give a s–t- but this is the biggest sellout in f–king history when it comes to a publication we all once trusted,” she said.

“F–k rolling stone. And I’ve felt that way for decades as so many of my favorite artists and my peers have,” she added. “This isn’t just about their horrendous opinion of ‘rating Grammy performances’. It’s decades of wasting Trees and people’s time.”

    [From ET Canada via DListed]

I think there are a couple of things true here. Rolling Stone is not the magazine it once was. It used to have some of the best counter cultural writing in circulation, on par with Playboy for its interviews and articles. The content today is more mainstream and, although not bad writing, pablum for the masses. And even though I am certainly not an expert in Grammy performances, I know that Pink has turned in a few memorable ones. I’m sure she deserves a spot on the list. There are others who probably should be there as well. But even though her rant has merit, placing it in the comments on a Best Of list she’s been conspicuously left off of looks like sour grapes. To be clear, it doesn’t bother me that Pink is p*ssed off. I would be too if I’d given a Cirque du Soleil performance while still singing not to even get an honorable mention. But Pink’s trying to say RS’s opinion doesn’t matter because they’re irrelevant and wasting people’s time. One might argue expending this much energy over not being recognized by them gives them relevance.

Following her comments, Pink posted the photo below of her performance at the 2016 Grammys. Like I said, many things are true here. 1) RS made a subjective list that neglected people who deserved to be on it. 2) RS is not the magazine it once was. 3) Pink has turned in great Grammy performances and deserves a spot on the list. 4) Pink absolutely cares that she was not included on the list. 5) Covering Snooki is not the reason RS is irrelevant – she’s actually kind of fun so there’s no reason to pick on her to trash RS.
