Giada De Laurentiis consumes 10 lbs of cheese a day but ‘snacking’ makes her sick

I’ve mentioned this many times before, but I watch cooking shows to relax. I find it so relaxing to watch Ina Garten or Bobby Flay just cook meals in their kitchens. Just straight-up cooking, not those competition shows or whatever “showdown”. Just let me chill in a chef’s home kitchen so I can watch them make pancakes from scratch. Over the years, I’ve obviously chosen my favorites (Ina) and my least favorite: Giada de Laurentiis. I’ll be fair to Giada – she can cook. She’s not, like, Sandra Lee, who uses pre-packaged everything. Giada knows how to cook, she develops her own recipes, she makes everything from scratch.

So why do I dislike Giada? Because at some point, her show just became about “watch how Giada incorporates cheese into every g–damn dish.” The woman puts cheese in EVERYTHING. She puts cheese in cookies, in cakes, in beef dishes. She puts cheese on vegetables, she puts cheese in or on literally every side dish, main dish, appetizer and dessert. For those of us on the friendly side of lactose intolerant (plus I just hate the smell of most cheeses), it’s flat-out disgusting. But instead of saying to herself “maybe all of this damn cheese is making me feel sick,” Giada has focused her energy on “prepackaged snacks are bad.” This is all to promote her most recent cookbook, which is basically a look into her elimination diet.

As Giada De Laurentiis filmed her show Giada at Home, she would spend the day chowing down on rich baked goods and cheese-laded pastas on camera and then subsist on pre-packaged snacks to give her an energy boost during the long days. But it left her feeling “bloated and tired.” The days filled with heavy foods – which she’d often end back at home with take-out – led De Laurentiis, 50, to reset her diet, which is the focus of her new book, Eat Better, Feel Better: My Recipes for Wellness Healing, Inside and Out, she told Today.

“I was snacking on all the wrong foods – lots of sugar, caffeine, pre-packaged snacks – basically anything that I thought would give me energy to get through the day,” she said. “My body was paying the price.”

The first step, De Laurentiis said, was to pay attention to how she was feeling. “I started really listening to my body and eating the foods that loved me back,” she said. “That helped my body heal itself and also indicated what foods worked for my body and what foods didn’t.”

For De Laurentiis, that meant meal prepping at the start of the week and batch cooking “things like quinoa, brown rice, roasted sweet potatoes or cauliflower, and chicken broth. This made it easy to throw lunches together,” she said. “Once you have everything prepped, it’s super-simple to make delicious, nutrient-dense meals in a matter of minutes. I used to shop for what I felt like eating in the moment, but I realized that I wasn’t buying the most nutritious ingredients or meals because of it,” she explained. “Planning meals helps you stay on track and not over-buy.”

Oh wow you don’t say, she felt bloated, tired and gross after consuming five pounds of cheese every day? But sure, the problem is “snacking,” right. I mean, good for her for going with cleaner, simpler foods that weren’t so rich. But you know she’s making brown rice and quinoa and then grating a pound of cheese on top of it. I apologize for sounding so anti-cheese, and I know a lot of people do like to incorporate cheese into their meals, but holy hell. It’s like it never occurred to Giada that the real problem is that she shoves a massive amount of cheese into every dish she cooks? Like, girl, that is why you feel ill.

Did John Mayer have anything to do with Giada De Laurentiis’ split?

As we learned earlier this week, Giada de Laurentiis and her husband Todd have decided to end their marriage. In Giada’s initial statement, she just said that she and Todd were separating, but one day later, Todd filed for divorce and Giada followed up by filing her own divorce papers. Giada and Todd’s marriage has weathered a lot of trouble, from competing work schedules to rumors of infidelity (on her part). Those John Mayer rumors certainly lingered a long time, didn’t they? Well, the New York Daily News said that the Mayer rumors “cast a shadow” over her marriage and she and Todd never really recovered from it. Radar had even more details about the Mayer rumors:

Giada De Laurentiis’ bombshell divorce announcement came as a surprise Monday after her 11 years of marriage to Todd Thompson. Though the couple’s filings offered little clue as to the reason for the split, RadarOnline.com has learned that there have been cracks in the marriage for years. In fact, according to one previous report, De Laurentiis cheated on her husband back in 2010 — with singer John Mayer!

De Laurentiis and Mayer worked together at a charity event hosted by Tiger Woods in 2007, and two years later, blogs were rife with outrageous claims that they were hooking up. But speculation reached a fever pitch in 2010 with an explosive report in Star magazine. On October 9, 2010, the mag claimed, De Laurentiis and Mayer crossed paths at the exclusive Boom Boom Room at The Standard hotel.

“Almost as soon as they saw each other, they left the room moments apart,” an eyewitness said at the time. “Giada was leaning with her back against the wall, and John was right up against her,” the source told the magazine. “Giada was holding his hand and she just had a huge grin on her face. John had one hand on the small of her back. They looked like two people who were going to go home together.”

And while they didn’t go home together, they did go to another hotel, the magazine claimed.

Another eyewitness allegedly spotted the two not long after at the Plunge lounge atop the nearby Hotel Gasevoort, where they were “extremely touchy-feely.”

They soon disappeared into another of the hotel’s suites, the magazine reported, where Mayer ordered up ice buckets and towels at 1:30 a.m. Around 3 a.m., a source said at the time, De Laurentiis was seen leaving. When approached by Star for comment, De Laurentiis admitted, “I was at The Standard that night,” but she insisted she didn’t see Mayer.

“I’ve met him and he’s a great guy, but I just like his music,” she said. “That’s all. I’m happily married!”

I have mixed feelings about these old stories. I mean… she could do a lot better than Mayer, you know? I could see it if it was just a one-time thing, but even then… would you throw away your marriage just to have an affair with JOHN MAYER? No. You would throw away your marriage to have an affair with Clive Owen, or Tom Hardy, or maybe Ewan McGregor.

Meanwhile, People Magazine reports that they night before Giada announced her split, she went out drinking with her friend Bobby Flay. They were seen at Cecconi’s in Miami Beach and “They were laughing and talking and enjoying the fabulous weather. Neither seemed to have a care in the world.” Bobby is married to Stephanie March, although it’s been long rumored that he has a wandering eye (remember that sketchy January Jones story?). But… Bobby and Giada have been friends for years. Maybe it was just one friend taking out another friend for a good time.

Giada De Laurentiis: Its not about how much you weigh or if youre as thin as someone else | general

On eating healthier after giving birth:

“When I became pregnant with my daughter, Jade, everything changed. I cut down on sugar and started being more mindful of what I was eating. I ate more vegetables, protein, whole grains and a lot less sweet stuff. I started buying organic ingredients, trying to limit the pesticides and chemicals in my system as much as possible. And guess what? I began to feel better – even better than better.”

On enjoying her favorite food in moderation:

“I can honestly say that now, in my 40s, I am healthier than I was in my 20s and 30s. I sleep better. I feel happier, I still love chocolate – that’ll never change – only now in moderation. That brings me to my number one philosophy on eating: Eat a little of everything, but not a lot of anything. It’s such a simple idea but it took me a long time to embrace it.”

On loving her body:

“Everyone is different. Genetics made me short and small-boned. But it’s not about how much you weigh or if you’re as thin as someone else, it’s about looking in the mirror and loving yourself. Having more energy and fewer ups and downs is half the battle. I feel stable and can give my attention to everyone and everything in my life: my daughter, my husband, Todd, my friends, my work and myself.”

… says 43 year-old celebrity chef Giada.
