Peter Phillips’ fiancee Harriet Sperling is apparently acing the ‘Balmoral Test’

Peter Phillips’ engagement thunder was sort of stolen by the Prince and Princess of Wales, correct? Peter announced his engagement to Harriet Sperling on August 1st. The gossip about the engagement and wedding lasted less than a week, then the royalists moved on swiftly to talking about the Sussexes’ Netflix contract and the Waleses’ move to Forest Lodge. In any case, Peter and Harriet are still quite happy, and for the first time in their relationship, Harriet has been invited to Balmoral. She will have to survive the infamous Balmoral Test, where members of the Windsor clan “test” a woman to see if she’s horsey, sporty, outdoorsy and interested in shooting animals. Part of the test is also wardrobe-related – a woman is expected to know how to dress at any given point of the day. To be fair, I think the Balmoral Test is more lowkey these days, especially considering that King Charles doesn’t give a sh-t and he’s probably just staying in Birkhall, not the big house.

Future Royal bride Harriet Sperling is undergoing the “Balmoral Test” after being invited to the Scottish Highlands for the first time. The NHS nurse is set to marry the King’s nephew Peter Phillips, 47, after the royal revealed this summer he had already popped the question after just over a year dating.

Mum-of-one Harriett, 45, has joined the King and Queen in Scotland and has thrown herself into the famous family exam held at Balmoral’s 53,000 acre estate ahead of her Royal wedding. Insiders reveal she had been bonding with Zara Tindall and her children while enjoying rides on trips on electric-powered mountain bikes around the estates. She also joined the royals while horseriding in the estate this week.

Balmoral allows the extended Royal Family to gather for several weeks during August in one of only two times a year along with Christmas that they all enjoy a work-free get-together. The Balmoral Test lives in folklore within royal circles and Princess Diana’s wooing of the late Queen and Prince Philip was immortalised in Netflix show The Crown.

A source said: “Everyone knows Peter is smitten and his family have accepted Harriett into the set up so she will likely pass the infamous Balmoral Test with flying colours.”

[From The Sun]

“…To gather for several weeks during August…” During Queen Elizabeth’s reign, she loved to be in Scotland every summer for at least two months, which allowed the extended family to travel there at their leisure, and it wasn’t some big rush to ensure that everyone was in residence at the same time. Charles only arrived in Balmoral in the middle of August, but it looks like the whole family is there at the same time right now. As for Harriet passing the Balmoral Test… as I said, it’s not as rigid and bum-clenching as it was in QEII’s day. My guess is that the younger royals and royal-adjacents have the run of the big house, and so of course they’re having a nice vacation with little drama.

Peter Phillips will likely invite Prince William & Harry to his spring wedding

Remember when certain people tried to say that both Prince William and Prince Harry turned up for Robert Fellowes’ funeral last year? All of the reporting around the funeral indicated that Harry would not travel to the UK last August, but that was a cover. Harry flew in and out of the UK and no one knew until days later. They tried to say William went to the funeral too, but I never believed that. Anyway, that was the last time William and Harry were in the same place at the same time (allegedly). Now the conversation has turned to the next time they might be in the same place at the same time: Peter Phillips’s second wedding, which has not been scheduled. Will Peter invite Harry? And will Harry go? From The Royalist Substack:

Prince Harry and Prince William were last in church together for the funeral of their uncle, Robert Fellowes, and I’d bet good money that the next time they will be together will also be in a church. It will be a happier occasion this time, the marriage of their cousin, Peter Phillips (Princess Anne’s son) to public NHS nurse Harriet Sperling, a suitable bride for the unflashiest young royal.

Peter and Harriet announced they were engaged last week. They have not yet named the date but a spring wedding is on the cards. And both Prince Harry and Prince William will be invited, I understand, setting up one of the most emotionally charged family encounters in recent years should both decide to accept.

[From The Royalist]

I’ve already seen Sussex-fans say that Peter won’t invite Harry, or maybe William would convince Peter to ban the Sussexes or whatever. From what little I know about Peter Phillips, I think he probably will extend an invitation to the Sussexes, and he genuinely hopes to have his extended family at his wedding. Now, will the Sussexes go? Would Harry go solo? Those are the questions, not “will Peter invite them?” The British tabloids know that as well, which is why they’re already crying about how Harry needs to come.

Prince Harry has been warned how it could look if he snubs Peter Phillips and Harriet Sperling’s upcoming royal wedding. The royal couple, who began dating last year, announced their engagement last week. Although there is not yet a set date for the wedding, many members of the Royal Family are set to be in attendance.

Speaking of whether Harry could travel back to the UK to attend, culture expert and television presenter Nick Ede suggested that Harry may want to attend or risk “looking petty”.

He told the Express: “Prince Harry has always been close to Peter Phillips and Harry has been known to attend major royal occasions on his own. I think that it would be a good thing for his popularity if he attended the wedding. If he is looking to gain faavour with his family this could be a nice way of starting to heal the rift. If he doesn’t attend it will look a bit petty and that he is not supporting his cousin on his special day.”

[From The Daily Express]

From Harry’s perspective, he could argue that he went to Peter’s first wedding and William did not, so maybe they should trade off for this wedding. Honestly though, there’s going to be so much gossip about this in the months to come. It’s the next big “thing” which they can obsess over and threaten Harry over. Very few of those stories will talk about the logistics though, which is that Harry will never go unless he gets security.

Sources swear that Peter Phillips didn’t sell his engagement photos to Hello Mag

A few months ago, I noted that Peter Phillips’ girlfriend Harriet Sperling seemed to have the approval of not just his family, but the British media. There was a sense of togetherness, that everyone was working in tandem to make Harriet happen and give her a big rollout. The only thing surprising about their engagement news last week was that it came together so quickly, roughly 14 months after they started dating. The Mail and other outlets have been raving about Harriet’s style, and they’re already doing big fashion articles with affiliate links. Commenters said that Harriet has been getting free/comped clothes this whole time, and it wouldn’t surprise me at all. I haven’t seen any outlet confirm it though – probably because everyone expects Peter to make deals wherever he can. Speaking of, there’s some chatter about Peter and Harriet’s engagement photos, which Hello Magazine carried exclusively. Meaning, Hello almost definitely paid for those photos. But sources told the Telegraph that Hello didn’t pay for the pics?

In June Harriet Sperling made her royal carriage debut in the procession at Ascot, accompanying Peter Phillips in carriage three. That suggested Sperling, who appears to have slotted naturally into the Firm, had been given the official seal of approval.

Even so, it was a surprise on Friday when she and Phillips announced their betrothal. The news came via Hello! magazine, which published two photographs of the couple (in which Sperling showed off her diamond engagement ring, estimated by one expert to cost at least £10,000) shortly after Phillips and Sperling spoke to the King and Queen.

The choice of magazine prompted reminders of Phillips’s first wedding, in 2008, when he caused controversy by selling the exclusive photographic rights to Hello! for a reported £500,000, allegedly angering the late Queen, who was not consulted in advance.

The pictures marking Phillips and Sperling’s engagement, however, are said to have been taken privately and it is understood that no commercial arrangement was made with Hello! or any other publication.

The couple have yet to announce a date for their wedding. However leading designers will surely be champing at the bit to dress Sperling. She has already won praise for the elegant way in which she mixes high-street brands such as Zara with royal-approved British designers. In her engagement photos, Sperling is wearing a white cheesecloth top and skirt set by Me Em, a home-grown label favoured by the Princess of Wales.

As both an elegant figure, coolly unfazed by public duties, and a hard-working NHS nurse and single mother, Sperling is the ideal fit for a gradually modernising institution. It appears she’s not just a great match for Phillips: she could be the Royal family’s shining new star.

[From The Telegraph]

“She could be the Royal family’s shining new star?” “Unfazed by public duties?” I wasn’t aware that Peter had public duties – he just shows up for fun stuff like Ascot and Wimbledon, and some of the family events. Perhaps they’re talking about the “public duty” of being a royal-adjacent figure for the tabloids to talk about. Anyway, the tabloids are playing nice right now, which speaks volumes about the glamour-vacuum which exists in the Windsor clan right now. I strongly suspect that whoever briefed the Telegraph about the Hello exclusive wasn’t telling the truth. And honestly, why does it matter? Peter doesn’t have a title, he isn’t a working royal, and he’s already been caught monetizing his royal-adjacency many times. “Selling engagement photos to Hello” is a pretty nothingburger scandal.

Mail: But will Prince Harry be invited to Peter Phillips & Harriet Sperling’s wedding?

Peter Phillips announced his engagement to Harriet Sperling on Friday, and the British media immediately commenced wildly speculating about what the wedding would entail and who would be invited. This will be the second marriage for both Peter and Harriet, and both have children from their previous relationships. Which I like – I think it’s nice that we’re seeing a blended family and an age-appropriate pairing of two divorced 40-somethings. Anyway, as I said, the Windsors are going to make a really big deal about this wedding because they’ve been in desperate need of big, happy royal events. They also need an excuse to demand that Prince Harry “come back to England” to attend some event. Peter’s wedding will be that excuse by the sound of it:

With Peter Phillips and Harriet Sperling set to tie the knot, the first major British royal wedding in years is now on the horizon. The couple, who have been dating for a little over a year, officially announced their engagement on Friday – and it’s likely royal fans will be in for a treat when their wedding rolls around. Princess Anne’s son and NHS nurse Harriet have both been married before – Peter to Autumn Kelly, and Harriet to a fitness instructor – leading some to question whether their nuptials may look slightly different to what the nation is accustomed to when it comes to royalty.

However, former royal butler, Grant Harrold, believes that the couple won’t be held back by royal protocol like King Charles and Queen Camilla once were because it is ‘very different times’ now. Grant told Femail: ‘Historically, yes, royal weddings, if you’re divorced and you got married again, it was always a much more low key affair. I still think [Peter’s] will be an all-white wedding. I think he’ll still want to do things even though he’s the divorcee. I still think it will be a full blown white wedding affair. I think it’s very different times, so they can either go for a low key or a high profile. It’ll be entirely up to them at the time.’

Marrying as a divorced person is still a relatively new concept for the royals – only happening in the last 20 years – meaning there’s no clear and established path. The couple is yet to confirm any details of the wedding – but they could opt for a style similar to King Charles and Queen Camilla when they married in 2005. Unlike Charles’ first wedding, the couple’s civil ceremony was kept private, and Buckingham Palace announced that there would be no music or readings featured in the order of service.

But royal expert Phil Dampier told Femail that it is likely Harriet and Peter won’t be held back by royal protocols like Camilla and Charles were. He said: ‘I think Peter Phillips’ wedding will be fairly low key but not because he is divorced. After all the first marriages of the King, Princess Anne and Prince Andrew all ended in divorce as well, so the stigma that there was in the 50s is no longer there. Peter Phillips is not a working royal so he can pretty much do what he wants. I’m sure senior royals will be invited and will attend but we probably won’t see any big parade or carriage procession. He is well down the pecking order in the line of succession and so it will be very much done as he and his fiancée want.’

‘In that sense, it won’t be very different from his first wedding. Ironically, his first wife switched from being a Catholic to the Church of England so that he wouldn’t lose his place in the line of succession, but the rules have now been changed and he is so far down to be irrelevant now.’

While a guest list and a date have not officially been set for the wedding, many royal fans may wonder whether Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will get an invite to Harriet and Peter’s royal nuptials. Former royal butler, Grant Harrold, also believes that Harry will be in attendance. He said: ‘One thing I do know is obviously the King and Queen and his cousin Prince William, and possibly Prince Harry, who’s also very close to him, would be there.’

The Duke of Sussex, along with his brother William, were raised in Gloucestershire, just a few miles from where Peter Phillips and his sister, Zara Tindall, grew up and the foursome appeared to share a close bond.

[From The Daily Mail]

This piece was crazy long, but you get the broad strokes. They even suggested that Peter and Harriet should do a Sussex-style wedding, hahahaha. And the Mail mentioned the fact that Prince William skipped Peter’s first wedding – William was in Kenya at the time, with Jecca Craig’s family. *cough* I imagine William will make it to Peter’s second wedding though, if only to use his presence to argue that Peter needs to choose. Meaning, if William goes to the wedding, ten bucks says he’ll try to force Peter into NOT inviting Harry. Anyway, they’re absolutely going to try to turn this into another major social event. And with that, the main storyline will be “Are Harry and Meghan going to the wedding?”

Peter Phillips is engaged to Harriet Sperling, a 45-year-old nurse & single mom

Ever since Peter Phillips and Autumn Phillips’ divorce was finalized, Peter has been looking for the next Mrs. Phillips. Some men are just like that – always looking for a long-term relationship, if not marriage. Peter spent several years dating two women in succession, and both of those ladies got pretty serious “girlfriend rollouts” in the British press. In the spring of 2024, he began dating Harriet Sperling, a nurse and single mother in her 40s. Harriet also got a big “girlfriend rollout,” the biggest of which happened in June of this year, when Harriet was Peter’s plus-one at several major events. It felt different, like everyone was sizing her up as a would-be princess. And yes, I know Peter doesn’t have a title, but he’s still part of the royal family, and these people are in desperate need of photogenic princesses. Well, good news: Peter proposed and Harriet said yes! They gave/sold the exclusive engagement photos to Hello.

Peter Phillips and Harriet Sperling have confirmed their engagement after a year of dating. The couple shared their news on Friday exclusively with HELLO! and released two photos which showed off Harriet’s stunning engagement ring.

A statement issued for the couple by Gerard Franklin, read: “Mr Peter Phillips, the son of HRH The Princess Royal and Captain Mark Phillips and Ms Harriet Sperling, daughter of the late Mr Rupert Sanders and Mrs Mary Sanders of Gloucestershire, have today confirmed their official engagement.

“Both families were informed jointly of the announcement and were delighted with the wonderful news of their engagement. Their Majesties The King and Queen, The Prince and Princess of Wales have been informed of the announcement. No date has been officially set for the wedding.”

Harriet looked gorgeous in the photo, wearing a frilly white top and skirt, while her diamond ring sparkled as she proudly showed it off. She gazed lovingly at her husband-to-be, who wore a plaid top for the occasion.

HELLO’s royal editor, Emily Nash, said: “This is wonderful news for Peter and Harriet, but also the wider royal family. Peter is close to the King and to his cousins and Harriet seems to have been warmly welcomed into the fold.”

Meanwhile, royal photographer James Whatling, who has photographed Peter and Harriet several times, tells HELLO!: “We were waiting for this news. You can’t watch this couple for too long without noticing how close they are, they’re so tactile and they’re clearly so in love. It was only a matter of time.”

[From Hello]

Congrats to them, honestly. I’ve enjoyed Peter’s post-divorce vibe – he’s dated age-appropriate women, and I like that he’s engaged to a single mom with an actual job (nurse). They seem to be really happy. I’ll cover some of the extra stuff separately, because there’s already a fair amount of chatter about when they’ll schedule the wedding and whether or not Prince Harry will be invited, lmao. I mean, part of that discussion is the fact that the left-behinds and the British media are obsessed with the Sussexes and all of them manage to find amazing ways to turn every story into “but what about Harry and Meghan??” It’s also a tad funny that Peter seems to have selected an engagement ring which looks a lot like the ring Harry designed for Meghan.

There’s another aspect to this too – around King Charles’s 2023 coronation, many royalists were lamenting the fact that it would be a good fifteen to twenty years before the Windsors had any big, happy events – weddings, christenings, coronations. Which means that Peter’s second wedding will be pushed as a big “royal” event, because they’re desperate for those, and they’re desperate to have an event which they can say “Harry must be invited, but he’s desperate to come and he hasn’t been invited, what if he turns down the invitation,” etc.

Hugh Grant Peter Phillips Wimbledon

Did Hugh Grant doze off in the middle of the men’s match at Wimbledon?

Hugh Grant is a major tennis fan. I’m sure he has his favorite players, but really, he’s just obsessed with the sport entirely. He’s not only a regular at Wimbledon – where he can often be seen in the Royal Box – but he’s also a frequent guest at Roland Garros in Paris. There was an infamous moment in 2017 when tennis fans really embraced Hugh: he turned up in Paris to attend that year’s French Open women’s semifinals. He watched every minute of Jelena Ostapenko vs. Timea Bacsinszky. He has taste!

Well, anyway, Hugh was invited to the Royal Box at Wimbledon on Wednesday for the second day of the quarterfinals. I strongly suspect that he was more interested in the women’s match which was on Centre Court first (Andreeva vs. Bencic, with Bencic winning). But he stayed for the men’s quarterfinal match – Novak Djokovic vs. Flavio Cobolli, with Novak winning in four sets. There were tense moments in the first set, with Djokovic and Cobolli trading breaks of serve, then taking it to a tiebreak. This is how Hugh responded to the most nerve-wracking part of the match: zzzzzzz….

It’s always a smart move to keep your sunglasses on so that you can take a little catnap and no one is the wiser. Except Hugh was seated right behind Queen Camilla, and during the Djokovic match, there were dozens of cutaways to Camilla (and Hugh). So… yeah, people caught him napping in the Royal Box. I still say that he was mostly there for the ladies’ match though.

I’m also including photos of Peter Phillips and his latest girlfriend d Harriet Sperling, who were also in attendance on Wednesday.

Peter Phillips’ girlfriend Harriet Sperling is getting a full princess-to-be rollout

I’m hesitant to give Peter Phillips “credit” for anything, but I actually enjoy the fact that he’s dated age-appropriate women following his divorce from Autumn. Peter is 47 years old, and post-divorce, he dated Lindsay Wallace, a married woman in her 40s, for about three years. Two seconds after Peter and Lindsay split, he started up with Harriet Sperling, who is currently 45 years old. They immediately began making public appearances together and Harriet, like Lindsay Wallace before her, got “royal approval” from the wider Windsor clan. Anyway, I just appreciate the fact that Peter dates women his age and he’s not rocking up to Ascot with a 23-year-old socialite. In fact, Harriet’s got a great backstory: a 45-year-old single mother who works as a nurse, AND she has an aristocratic background. We know all of this because the British press is treating Harriet like the newest member of the royal family. From the Mail:

Among the top hats and finery of Royal Ascot this week, the absence of a certain elegantly attired princess was keenly felt. But where one willowy, sophisticated guest was missing, another stepped forward with panache. For while the Princess of Wales might have been notable by her absence, Harriet Sperling joined boyfriend Peter Phillips for no fewer than two appearances at the Berkshire racecourse. The first, and by far the most significant, was on Tuesday when she made her debut with senior Royals – including King Charles and Queen Camilla – in the traditional carriage procession to mark the start of Ascot.

Blonde hair tumbling in bouncy waves, the 45-year-old looked as if she’d been parading around in carriages for a lifetime as she smiled serenely under the blazing sun. In fact, she is a paediatric intensive care nurse and probably more accustomed to scrubs than negotiating carriages – or paddocks – in towering heels.

There was also a decidedly royal flavour – and budget – to her ensemble. The heels were by Emmy London, a brand worn by the Princess of Wales, and the £395 clutch was from the same brand; the hat was a £945 number by Awon Golding Millinery, a brand once sported by Meghan Markle. As for the balloon-sleeved jacket and midi skirt, these were by designer Suzannah London, a label favoured by Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh and – again – by Catherine, Princess of Wales. At £3,720, her outfit was certainly something of a stretch on the average nurse’s salary. But then, an invitation to join the royal procession, is a prestigious ticket.

The late Queen Elizabeth didn’t include girlfriends in the procession unless they were engaged, so Harriet’s presence has been viewed as something of an endorsement by the King. No wonder, then, that all eyes were on Harriet when she returned to Ascot on Thursday. Gracefully attired in buttercup yellow, she dropped a well-rehearsed curtsey to the monarch and appeared at ease with both protocol and her 47-year-old beau’s relatives.

[From The Daily Mail]

This piece was written by Becky English, and the second half of the article reveals that English went to Harriet’s mother’s home and the mother let English into the house and gave the Mail some quotes. Tacky, but that’s how these people play the game. Anyway, I kind of hate that we’re treating a 45-year-old nurse as some kind of willowy young princess-to-be, but that speaks to how the British press is starved for attractive royal or royal-adjacent women to follow. Anyway, Harriet seems like a lovely person and Peter seems really into her and really proud to be with her. It’s a nice story already, there’s no reason to go overboard with all of this sh-t.
