Divorces Ricky Martin

Ricky Martin & Jwan Yosef are divorcing after six years of marriage

Ricky Martin and Jwan Yosef are getting a divorce. They met in 2015 and married in 2018, although it feels like they’ve been together for a lot longer than that. They have two children together, and Ricky also has sons Matteo and Valentino – he was a single dad when he met Jwan. Jwan and Ricky were a hot couple, but they’re both single now and back on the market.

After six years of marriage, Ricky Martin and Jwan Yosef are divorcing.

“We have decided to end our marriage with love, respect and dignity for our children and honoring what we have experienced as a couple all these wonderful years,” the Puerto Rican superstar and the Syrian-Swedish artist tell PEOPLE in a joint statement.

“Our greatest desire now is to continue having a healthy family dynamic and a relationship centered on peace and friendship to continue the joint upbringing of our children, preserving the respect and love we have for each other,” continue the ex-couple, who share two kids: daughter Lucia, born in 2018, and son Renn, born in 2019. (Martin previously welcomed twin sons Matteo and Valentino, born in 2008, whom he’ll continue to raise as a single parent.)

I’ll be curious to see if we ever find out if there was something which triggered the divorce, an affair or a fight or something else. Ricky keeps his personal and professional business on lockdown for the most part, and he has a huge team helping him with every aspect of his life. Which is probably draining on a marriage, but it will probably mean that Ricky has the money and power to dictate terms about what comes out next. It was just last year when Ricky leveraged that machinery to shut down his nephew, who made some heinous claims about Ricky. I also kind of wonder if that whole “nephew story” played a role in the end of Ricky’s marriage.

Ricky Martin’s nephew dropped the claim & the temporary restraining order

In the beginning of July, a domestic abuse restraining order was filed against Ricky Martin in Puerto Rico. It was a big mystery… until it wasn’t. In the past week, we learned that Ricky’s 21-year-old nephew was the one who requested the restraining order. The nephew, Dennis Yadiel Sanchez, claimed that he and Ricky had a seven-month-long sexual relationship which ended poorly, and that Ricky was harassing him or threatening him in some way. Family members came out to claim that Sanchez struggles with mental health issues. Sanchez and Martin were due in court on Thursday for a hearing to determine (among other things) the validity of Sanchez’s claims and whether the restraining order should be kept in place. Then on Thursday, Sanchez’s lawyer asked that the case be dismissed.

The court case against Ricky Martin has been dismissed. Martin’s nephew, who’d accused the “Livin’ La Vida Loca” singer of sexual abuse, asked to have the case dismissed in a Puerto Rican court on Thursday, and his request was obliged, attorneys for Martin told PEOPLE in a statement.

“Just as we had anticipated, the temporary protection order was not extended by the Court. The accuser confirmed to the court that his decision to dismiss the matter was his alone, without any outside influence or pressure, and the accuser confirmed he was satisfied with his legal representation in the matter,” the statement read. “The request came from the accuser asking to dismiss the case.”

The statement continued: “This was never anything more than a troubled individual making false allegations with absolutely nothing to substantiate them. We are glad that our client saw justice done and can now move forward with his life and his career.”

[From People]

“This was never anything more than a troubled individual making false allegations with absolutely nothing to substantiate them.” Eh… maybe that was it exactly, that a young man in the throes of mental illness made up a story. But the whole idea that any victim would have to immediately “substantiate” their claims of abuse is a pretty bad precedent. Ricky also made an additional statement to the media and to his fans:

“I’m in front of the cameras today because I really need to talk in order for me to start my healing process. For two weeks, I was not allowed to defend myself because I was following a procedure where the law obligated me not to talk until I was in front of a judge. Thank God [these] claims were proven to be false, but I’m going to tell you the truth. It has been so painful. It has been devastating for me, for my family, for my friends. I don’t wish this upon anybody.”

“To the person that was claiming this nonsense, I wish him the best. And I wish he finds the help so he can start a new life filled with love and truth and joy and he doesn’t hurt anybody else. Now, my priority is to heal. And how do I heal? With music. I cannot wait to be back on stage. I cannot wait to be back in front of the cameras, and entertain, which is what I do best.”

“Thank you to all of my friends. Thank you to all the fans who always believed in me. You have no idea the strength that you gave me with every comment you wrote on social media. I wish you love and light and here we come, with the same strength and passion. God bless you all.”

[From People]

The immediate positioning from Ricky that he alone is the victim, the claim that he has been “proven” innocent (when his nephew merely dropped the claim), the immediate side-step to his career and wanting to get back on stage…I’m not sure any of this is the right tone, honestly. Purely from a PR perspective. That’s all I’ll say.

Ricky Martin’s ‘alleged domestic violence accuser’ is his 21-year-old nephew

A couple of weeks ago, a curious story appeared about Ricky Martin. Martin was the subject of a domestic abuse restraining order in Puerto Rico. Ricky and his husband live in Puerto Rico, and my first thought was that the restraining order possibly had something to do with Ricky’s husband Jwan Yosef. It does not. I’m also really side-eyeing the f–k out of the fact that Ricky’s publicist blanketed the media two weeks ago with denials and promises that Ricky will be vindicated. The story absolutely went to the worst case scenario:

Ricky Martin’s alleged domestic violence accuser is one of his own family members … and now the pop star’s reportedly staring down the possibility of a half-century behind bars. A new report Friday from Spanish news website Marca identifies Ricky’s accuser as his 21-year-old nephew, Dennis Yadiel Sanchez, which would introduce incest into the case in Puerto Rico.

The singer’s brother, Eric Martin, reportedly identified the alleged victim … and Ricky is going to court July 21. Under Puerto Rican law, there are harsher penalties for certain sexual crimes when the alleged victim is related to the accused, but it is unclear exactly what Martin is facing.

Nevertheless, Marca is reporting that Martin faces up to 50 years behind bars if convicted.

As we reported … Ricky was accused of domestic violence earlier this month, and the alleged victim, whose identity was previously unknown, got a temporary restraining order against Ricky, who has denied the allegations. Now, Marca is reporting the nephew allegedly ended a 7-month relationship with Ricky … Ricky allegedly did not take it well, continuing to contact his nephew and showing up at his nephew’s home.

[From TMZ]

His nephew. His 21-year-old blood-relative nephew. I feel sick. After Marca’s report was widely picked up across the globe, Ricky Martin’s lawyer Marty Singer (who is the top, top crisis manager/lawyer in Hollywood) then went to TMZ and other outlets with this denial:

“Unfortunately, the person who made this claim is struggling with deep mental health challenges. Ricky Martin has, of course, never been – and would never be – involved in any kind of sexual or romantic relationship with his nephew…. The idea is not only untrue, it is disgusting. We all hope that this man gets the help he so urgently needs. But, most of all, we look forward to this awful case being dismissed as soon as a judge gets to look at the facts.”

[From TMZ]

Ricky’s brother Eric Martin has also been in blanket-denial mode and claiming similar things, which is that this young man is mentally unwell and estranged from the family. Eric makes the point that the restraining order was granted not because they believe the nephew is credible, but because the police are currently investigating his claims. I don’t know about any of it, but I find the public dismissal of “this young man struggles from mental health issues” to be incredibly damaging. Especially since both things can be true – the nephew can have mental health struggles AND be a victim of a predatory relative. What an incredibly disturbing story.

Ricky Martin is the subject of a domestic abuse restraining order in Puerto Rico

Ricky Martin and his husband Jwan Yosef were in Cannes in May, and they looked especially loved up and happy. I believe they split their time between Puerto Rico and London, but it wouldn’t surprise me if Ricky has homes all over (I’m positive he maintains a residence in Miami?). Puerto Rico seems like his main base though, and something strange is happening. Ricky Martin is the subject of a domestic abuse restraining order. No one knows who filed the RO or what is happening. Ricky denies the whole thing…?

Ricky Martin is denying allegations in a domestic abuse restraining order filed in Puerto Rico and believes he will be fully vindicated. A complaint was made under Law 54, also known as the Domestic Abuse Prevention and Intervention Act per the Georgetown Journal of Gender and the Law, but due to the nature of the bill authorities did not reveal the petitioner’s name.

“The allegations against Ricky Martin that lead to a protection order are completely false and fabricated,” representatives for Martin told PEOPLE. “We are very confident that when the true facts come out in this matter our client Ricky Martin will be fully vindicated.”

Police attempted to issue the restraining order on Friday in an upscale neighborhood in Puerto Rico — where the singer is from — the Associated Press reported.

“Up until now, police haven’t been able to find him,” police spokesman Axel Valencia told the AP. Valencia told the AP that the order prevents Martin from contacting the person who made the complaint and that a judge will later decide whether the order should remain in place. Telemundo reported that details surrounding the complaint are still unclear. The order was issued by Judge Raiza Cajigas Campbell of the Court of First Instance of San Juan following the petitioner’s request.

Officials reportedly also clarified that the petitioner did not initially file a police complaint but instead went to court in their own right to request a protection order.

“We confirm that the Puerto Rico Police is in the process of filing a protection order, under Law 54, issued against Mr. Enrique Martín,” police said in a police statement, per Hindustan Times. Ricky Martin’s real name is Enrique Martin.

“As established by the nature of the process, from the moment the Police received a copy of the protection order, through the new Center for Operations and Processing of Protection Orders (COPOP), its processing was coordinated by the assigned agents to the Dorado barracks.”

[From People]

I have no idea what’s going on and I’m getting a really strange vibe from this. It’s not clear who filed the restraining order and I find it odd that Jwan Yosef hasn’t said anything, or that Ricky didn’t include Jwan in his statement. I don’t know. I really, really hope that this is not some “tip of the iceberg” situation. I so badly want to believe that Ricky is who he presents himself to be, a nice, gentle, hard-working family man. It would suck if that’s not who he really is.

Ricky Martin: ‘I’m super socially awkward but know I’m socially awkward’

Ricky_Martin_cvr

Happy Pride month y’all! People’s annual Pride Issue chose none other than Latin pop royalty Ricky Martin as their cover. Ricky has new music coming out! His first single from his new album, Play, drops June 10. He promises it’s going to be up-tempo dance music and I could not be more excited. I love danceable Ricky music.

Ricky came out as a gay man in 2010. He’s a father to pre-teen twins sons, Mateo and Valentino, and daughter, Lucia, and son, Renn, both of whom he welcomed with his husband, Jwan Yosef. In this latest issue of People, Ricky, whom we know as the swivel-hipped crooner who lives la Vida Loca, admitted that he’s actually quite insecure. He said despite the persona he’s been bringing to the stage since Menudo, he is still socially awkward.

It’s been over two decades since Ricky Martin arrived into American pop culture, Venus in leather pants on a clamshell. An approachable raconteur, he shook up the American pop establishment at the 1999 Grammy Awards with a thrust of his hips, a wave of his hands, and the invincible chorus of “Livin’ La Vida Loca” pulsing at 180 beats per minute. Women wanted him. Men wanted him. Madonna wanted him. (They recorded a duet.)

“But I’m really insecure, to be honest,” Martin admits, getting comfortable in his chair in a Los Angles hotel suite last month. He fiddles nervously with the hem of his silk shirt. “I’m super socially awkward but today, well the difference is that I know I’m socially awkward. So, I don’t go anywhere that causes me anxiety. I’m at peace with performing in front of 30,000 people and feel like the king of the world. But then I walk into a small room at an intimate gathering, and someone will say, ‘Hey Rick, sing a song for us!’ and that creates such anxiety.”

[From People]

I’m glad Ricky makes this distinction because people do mistake performing for confidence. But the energy it takes to get up on stage in front of people is different than the energy it takes for social interaction. Ricky talked about his anxiety also being tied to his closeted homosexuality. Ricky wasn’t just a popular singer, of course, he was a wildly attractive sex-symbol. But as Ricky was trying to figure out his sexuality, the public kept demanding an answer before he had one. Barbara Walters put him on the spot on national television, which turned into a defining moment for Ricky.

Martin lived with the question until he was 29. Then, in 2000, Barbara Walters asked it on national television. This was a year after the radio dominance of “Livin’ La Vida Loca” and 10 years before he came out publicly on his website. “You could stop these rumors,” Walters implored. “You could say, ‘Yes I am gay or no I’m not.’” Martin was visibly stunned. He finally retreated, answering with “I just don’t feel like it.”

He says the moment still haunts him. “When she dropped the question, I felt violated because I was just not ready to come out. I was very afraid.” Martin’s entire body shifts. He clears his throat and takes a deep breath. “There’s a little PTSD with that.”

“A lot of people say, what would you do differently?” He wonders too. “Well, maybe I would have come out in that interview. It would’ve been great because when I came out, it just felt amazing. When it comes to my sexuality, when it comes to who I am, I want to talk about what I’m made of, about everything that I am. Because if you hide it, it’s a life-or-death situation.”

I can’t forgive Barbara’s tactics. There’s no excuse for this kind of ambush in the year 2000. It is our job as a society to provide a world safe enough for people to feel they can live their truth, not to force them to admit it before they are ready.

Ricky said part of the issue with coming out before he did is there are not enough examples of LGBTQ mentorship in the Latinx community. Something he hopes to help correct. As is probably pretty obvious, I adore Ricky. I’m thrilled he’s on the cover of People and out there living his best life. And bless him for trying to make so many others lives better along the way.

Look who’s hanging out with Ricky!
