Emmys Good Causes Nate Bargatze

Nate Bargatze gave $250k to Boys & Girls Clubs, thought Netflix or Apple would do it

And just when you thought we were done talking about Nate Bargatze’s performance hosting the Emmys two weeks ago, the conversation continues. By Nate. In the familiar, comfortable setting of his own podcast, Nate shared some backstory on the gimmick he came up with for trying to curb acceptance speeches. He promised at the top of the show to donate $100,000 of his personal funds to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, with the caveat that he would add to or subtract from that figure based on the length of every acceptance speech, at a rate of $1,000 per second. How’d that work out? Nate ended up donating $250k, padding to cover the extensive overage in time (and deficit in money earned). The idea could have worked, possibly, but it was undermined by the fact that… it was the only thing Nate prepared!! (Sorry, he did make a half-assed “subtle” joke via wardrobe, but few caught it.) Anyway, here’s Nate ruminating on how he thought the bit would play out:

Nate Bargatze proved to be a charitable, generous man at the 77th Emmy Awards — not that he especially planned to be.

The stand-up comic said on his Nateland podcast that he never planned on donating $250,000 of his own money to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, as he did at the end of the Emmys.

“I had it in my head one way. It kind of came out another way, but — the reasoning was there,” Bargatze said of the running gag. “I wasn’t gonna give that money at the end, like, I wasn’t thinking I was gonna have to. But the way it went, I was like, ‘I can’t — I’m not gonna not …’”

The bit went like this: Bargatze, while opening the live awards show, pledged $100,000 of his own money to the Boys & Girls Clubs. Awesome. Even awesome-r, for every tick under 45 seconds a winner’s acceptance speech lasted, Bargatze would add another $1,000 from his own pocket. However, for every second over 45 seconds a winner went, he’d deduct $1,000 from the running tally. The bank ended up quite a bit in the red.

Bargatze says CBS had specifically asked him to come up with a way to keep acceptance speeches tight. CBS “loved” what he came up with, Bargatze said, as did “everyone at home.”

You know who didn’t? “A lot of the reviews,” Bargatze acknowledged.

…Bargatze saw this thing going a whole ‘nother way.

“I thought it was gonna be, I dunno, Netflix, or Apple,” Bargatze said on Nateland’s 271st episode. “If someone was giving these long speeches, I just thought they could be like, ‘and Netflix is gonna cover my overage.’”

“In my head, I pictured they could then go long, but then be a hero,” he said. “But I think I could have explained it more, to be honest.”

And he almost did. Bargatze said he “almost sent an email out” ahead of the show to explain the game and what he hoped to accomplish with it. A good idea, in hindsight.

[From The Hollywood Reporter]

Wait, he thought the big studios would pick up the tab for their own winners? For a premise they weren’t aware of nor agreed to ahead of time? Now that’s funny, Nate! How woefully naive, bless his heart. Also, did he basically just admit that his plan was to say he’d be donating… and then not actually donate? Some other notes: for one, he kept using the refrain “in my head.” Did he not have a team of writers for this? I think it’s imperative to have a collaborative effort for hosting an awards show for the very reason that not everything unfolds in real life the way the way you imagine it will in your own head. Along those lines, if you think your gag might benefit from a detailed email of rules sent out before the ceremony, then it’s not ready for primetime. And finally — though this is more for the network than Bargatze — if you really want to cut show length, please look first to the unnecessary reunions and tributes and musical/modern dance interpretations of gathering in front of the television. It’s really that simple! Then again, the ratings were way up this year, so what do I know…

The Hershey Bears hockey team beats world record with 100k stuffed animals on the rink

I was yesterday years old when I learned that the Hershey Bears — Hershey, PA’s ice hockey team — have been holding an annual, teddy bear-centric charity drive for nigh on 25 years. The delightful event goes down like this: fans are alerted in advance which game will be the Teddy Bear Toss and come to the venue armed with large trash bags filled with stuffed animals accordingly. Upon the Bears scoring their first goal of the game, the madness ensues, with fans gleefully hurling their fuzzy friends into the rink. Really, watch the video the team posted to their Instagram and you’ll see that nobody waits for a formal invitation; as soon as the goal is made it’s raining bears. And unicorns. And dogs and cats and frogs and a menagerie of cuddly creatures. Last year’s Teddy Bear Toss made a world record with 74,599 stuffed animals collected from the rink. This year? Hershey broke its own record at last Sunday’s game with a whopping 102,343 teddies that will be donated to charity.

The Hershey Bears are getting quite a bit of mascot support!

On Sunday, Jan. 5, the ice hockey team hosted their annual Teddy Bear Toss, which saw 100,000 bears flying into the ice rink, breaking their previous world record of 74,599 last year.

In a video shared on Instagram by the Hershey, Pa. team, numerous stuffed animals were thrown over the glass to celebrate the team’s first goal against the Providence Bruins.

“The world-famous event, held during today’s game against the Providence Bruins, sees fans throw stuffed animals onto the ice following Hershey’s first goal of the game in what is a spectacle that truly must be seen,” a press release from the Hershey Bears reads.

The club added, “Hershey forward Mike Sgarbossa scored the Teddy Bear Toss goal at 14:45 of the first period to tie the game against Providence at 1-1 and ignite the downpour.”

Piles of teddy bears were then collected on the ice rink, with many players such as right winger Pierrick Dubé and goaltender Clay Stevenson jumping on top of the stuffed animals.

The early celebration preceded the Hershey Bears’ 5-1 victory at the end of the game, which was attended by a sold-out crowd of 10,514.

The Teddy Bear Toss, which has taken place for charity since 2001, has collected a total 566,450 teddy bears.

Sunday’s stuffed animals will be donated “to over 35 local charities as part of the club’s Hershey Bears Cares program.”

The club’s numerous local and regional charities include Vista Autism Services, Schreiber Pediatric, Central PA Food Bank, Off the Streets, Gigi’s Playhouse Lancaster, Milton and Catherine Hershey Schools and Autism Society Greater Harrisburg Area.

[From People]

Who knew that the sight I deeply needed to see this week was a big, burly pro athlete launching himself with abandon into a mountain of stuffed animals. Let alone two big burly athletes doing it! It’s a life-affirming, heartwarming image. (Though a bit of a slippery slope as I quickly devolved into envy in wanting my own teddy bear mosh pit to dive into, like Daffy Duck swimming in piles of gold. Sigh…) I’m trying to wrap my head around the fact that the Teddy Bear Toss has collected a total of 566,540 stuffed animals over the 25 events they’ve held since 2001, and that 102,343 of that amount is from this year alone. I’m not the best mather, but that’s about a fifth of the total all from one game, right? At this rate, I’m envisioning the Bears being completely buried in the mounds of bears at next year’s Toss. Thank you Hershey Bears for bringing us such a charming act of charity. Man, chocolate and hundreds of thousands of teddy bears? Hershey, PA is really pulling their weight in joy output.

Dwayne Johnson on the backlash to his Maui fundraiser: ‘next time I will be better’

In response to the devastating wildfires that swept Maui in August, Dwayne Johnson and Oprah Winfrey set up the People’s Fund of Maui. The aim of the fund was to provide local survivors with $1,200 a month to assist in recovery. Dwayne and Oprah each donated $5 million to start off the fund, and then publicly asked people to contribute. In my side-eyeing Paris Hilton for vacationing near the disaster site, I seemed to have missed that Dwayne and Oprah themselves received backlash… for starting a fundraiser to help. The criticism they received was for asking people to donate, despite the massive wealth between them. Over the weekend Dwayne posted an Instagram video update about the first round of $1,200 checks going to survivors, and he also took the opportunity to address the flack he and Oprah received during the launch:

“When we first launched the fund, there was some backlash,” Johnson said in a video shared to his Instagram on Sunday. “I get it and I completely understand, and I could’ve been better. And next time I will be better.”

The “Moana” actor acknowledged that he knows “money ain’t falling out of the sky, and it’s not growing on trees, and there’s a lot of people out there who’s living paycheck to paycheck. And I get it, and I know what that’s like.”

Many people criticized Johnson and Winfrey for not contributing more from their own pockets and asking their fans to donate.

“When you’re living paycheck to paycheck, you are easily pissed off. It’s frustrating,” Johnson continued in his video on Instagram. “And the last thing you want to hear when you’re living paycheck to paycheck is someone asking you for money — especially when the person asking you for money already has a lot of money. I get it, I understand.”

Johnson’s net worth is estimated at $270 million and Winfrey’s is estimated $2.5 billion, according to Forbes.

“I’ve never launched a fund before, but I’m a quick study and lesson learned,” the “Red Notice” star added.

He also thanked his fans for their honesty in his caption, writing, “I’ll always appreciate and protect that straight talk between us – you have my word to always listen, learn, grow and do better.”

Johnson and Winfrey’s fund is intended to give adults displaced by the wildfires in Lahaina and Kula a monthly stipend of $1,200 to help them during recovery.

In Johnson’s latest post, he said the first round of applicants has started to receive the monthly stipend.

“I’m so grateful and moved by all the messages I’m receiving out of Maui from the survivors of the devastating wildfires who are now getting their personal funding from The People’s Fund of Maui,” he wrote in the caption. “The strength of our people of Maui is beautiful and inspiring. Watching families and community come together after this tragedy is inspirational and I’m proud of our Polynesian people.”

Johnson concluded: “Thank you to everyone who has helped by sending resources, love and prayers to all people affected by the fires and a loving mahalo and RESPECT to our OG cultural leaders, our local community organizations, and all our first responders and every person who came together to help our people.”

[From USA Today]

I don’t usually say this, but in this particular case I’m with the million-billionaires. Between Dwayne and Oprah, they started off the fund with $10 million of their own money. A drop in the bucket for each of them, sure, but I still don’t think they’re the bad guys here. They each routinely donate generously to worthy causes. And they didn’t single out any one group to contribute to the fund, it was a blanket plea that other millionaires were welcome to respond to! That being said, this was a well done move by Dwayne — to acknowledge the parts that didn’t land from the original launch and promise to handle it better next time, all while giving a positive update on money going out to survivors. But overall, I think the intent, context, and track records matter a lot here. I mean, it’s not like Dwayne and Oprah just showed up empty-handed to a refugee center or foodbank for the umpteenth time.

Zendaya and Tom Holland visited an Oakland middle school basketball event

Here’s a fun story to start off your week. The Cutest Celebrity Couple, Zendaya and Tom Holland, were spotted playing basketball at an Oakland, California middle school over the weekend. They were there alongside actor and basketball player Elvin Rodriguez, Harlem Globetrotters player Sam Diaz, former Bachelorette contestant Christon Staples, and more as a part of an event organized by local nonprofits. Pictures and videos show them shooting hoops, making speeches, doing tricks, and hugging children.

Celebrity couple and Spider-Man costars Zendaya and Tom Holland made a surprise visit to an Oakland middle school on Friday, where they showed off some basketball skills to a crowd of onlookers.

Photos and videos posted to Zendaya’s Instagram story show the pair in her hometown, attending a basketball game at West Oakland Middle School. They were there as part of a event organized by local nonprofits Hoopbus and Project Backboard.

In Zendaya’s story, Holland is seen dribbling a basketball and wearing a T-shirt by local clothing brand Oaklandish that reads, “Oakland Roots.” A video posted by “Hustle” actor and basketball player Elvin Rodriguez shows Zendaya assisting him with a layup on the court.

Another video posted by Regular Hoops shows Harlem Globetrotters player Sam Diaz teaching Holland how to spin a basketball.

Hoopbus operates out of a retrofitted 40-foot yellow school bus that is driven around the country. Members teach students about racism and racial inequalities via basketball demonstrations. Project Backboard renovates basketball courts at public schools using colorful, large-scale artwork.

“I just came to say hi to all of you, see your beautiful faces, and have a great time,” Zendaya said in a speech given to the crowd.

Zendaya was raised in Oakland and attended Oakland School for the Arts.

[From SFGate]

I love this so much! I checked out Zendaya’s, Rodriguez’s, and a bunch of other Instagram accounts that posted pictures and stories from the event over the weekend and it looked like everyone was having a blast. Personally, I really enjoy stories like this, where lowkey celebs show up to a community event, don’t act like divas or a-holes, raise money or awareness for a good cause, and don’t have any ulterior motive. Bonus points if they have ties to the community.

Tom and Zendaya have reportedly been together since 2021. They keep their relationship pretty private by Hollywood standards and never seem thirsty for attention. I don’t think they walk a lot of red carpets together, either, which – respect – but I wish they would! It looks like the most public thing they tend to do is comment on each other’s Instagram posts with lovey-dovey emojis. I do hope they start doing more things like this together. It makes me like them even as a couple even more than I do now. If you’re interested in checking out the nonprofits that put together the basketball event they are Project Blackboard, Oakland Roots, Oaklandish, and Hoopbus.

Dolly Parton Good Causes Good Celebrity

Dolly Parton visits Kansas to celebrate expansion of her Imagination Library

There are so many reasons to love Dolly Parton but one of the things I admire the most about her is her commitment to promoting childhood literacy. Her charity the Imagination Library donates a free book to each child enrolled in the program, from birth (or whenever they are registered) until they turn five. Since 1995, it’s donated over 200 million books to over 2 million kids across five countries, including the United States. I know it’s active in many states, but the Library has just expanded statewide into Kansas. So Dolly went there and was interviewed by the governor, Laura Kelly, about why she started Imagination Library. Dolly’s dad couldn’t read, and he was embarrassed by that, so Dolly created this charity in his honor. One of the first places that Imagination Library expanded to outside of Tennessee was Pratt, Kansas, so this statewide expansion is a full-circle moment.

Country superstar, American icon and literacy champion Dolly Parton visited Overland Park on Monday to celebrate a new partnership with the state of Kansas, expanding her Imagination Library program.

Now, if you live anywhere in Kansas and you have a child under 5 years old, you can sign up your child for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. The result is that every month your child will receive a book in the mail completely for free.

Beyond the voice, beyond the magnetic personality, Dolly Parton describes her motivation for creating Imagination Library: her father.

“Being that far back in the mountains, Daddy didn’t go to school. My daddy didn’t learn to read or write. That troubled him, troubled me that he was troubled,” Parton said at the J KC’s White Theatre.

“Daddy got to live long enough to see Imagination Library take off, and I thought that was great,” Parton said.

“She is — she’s Dolly,” Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly said. “What can I say? There’s no question when she walked into the backstage that that was Dolly Parton.”

Kelly, acting as interviewer, notes the first expansion of Imagination Library outside of Tennessee (Parton’s home state) was into Pratt, Kansas.

The current push to bring the program statewide bookends that move that’s already considered popular in some spots.

“We were told that we would probably get about 1,000 kids in our first year. Well we had 1,000 kids in our first seven hours,” said Kim Hinkle, executive director of the Shawnee Mission Education Foundation.

The group was the first to adopt the program in Johnson County.

“If you sign your child up the day they’re born, they’ll have 60 books in their home library by the time they’re in kindergarten,” Hinkle said.

[From Fox4 Kansas City]

As if that weren’t enough, Dolly also visited Olympia, Washington, to celebrate statewide coverage for the Imagination Library there, too. The impact that this charity has makes me emotional just to think about. It can be challenging for people, especially in rural areas, to find and afford high quality books for their kids. Dolly designed this charity so thoughtfully, because getting a new book delivered each month makes a child feel excited and special, and gives them something to look forward to. (It also lightens the burden on parents, since they don’t have to remember to do anything.) The books are always age appropriate for the child, so that they may be challenged, but not overwhelmed by the reading level of the book. And there are braille books and audiobooks for children who need them. This is why Dolly is a national treasure. She has taken her power and influence and truly used it for good. And the Imagination Library isn’t just a one time thing–it’s an ongoing, years-long commitment to each child who is registered.

Dave Grohl Good Causes Good Celebrity Good deeds

Dave Grohl cooked for over 24 hours to serve homeless in LA during the storms

In addition to historic blizzards and relentless rain, Los Angeles temperatures have been particularly cold for the area. Overnight lows downtown are hovering in the low 40s. It’s difficult for the unhoused community. That’s why people like Dave Grohl are so freaking amazing. Because last week he rolled up to Hope the Mission with his own smoker and meat and cooked for over 24 hours to provide food for guests and staff.

Dave Grohl spent over 24 hours volunteering at a Los Angeles shelter to prepare barbecue for hundreds of people experiencing homelessness, once again proving he’s everyone’s hero.

The Foo Fighters frontman had brisket, pork butt, ribs and more delivered to Hope the Mission’s Trebek Center in Northridge, California, on Feb. 22, Grace Ancheta, director of development at Hope the Mission, tells TODAY.com.

“He arrived around 3 in the afternoon, and then he was in our kitchen,” Ancheta says. “He was prepping the meat, he was cutting it up and he was there until he put it in the smoker.”

“The meat didn’t go into the smoker until midnight that night because he’s like, ‘Oh, it has to season and it has to do this,’” Ancheta adds. “He’s definitely a craftsman when it comes to that, and then he spent the night.”

Ancheta says Grohl and his fellow barbecuers took turns smoking the meat overnight — even as a major winter storm moved through Southern California, dumping hail and rain on the shelter that night — until it was ready at about 3 p.m. on Feb. 23, or about an entire day after he started cooking.

Hope the Mission’s shelters serve dinner around 6 p.m., so Grohl was working toward that deadline to be able to serve the meals after they were prepared, Ancheta says.

“He actually served to our guests, he came out and was very gracious and took pictures with the people that recognized him,” Ancheta says. “He wanted no glory for it, he was like, ‘I just want to do this for you guys and give back in that way.’”

Ancheta says Grohl told staffers at Hope the Mission he finds getting into the barbecue pit therapeutic after he comes offstage.

“Whenever he comes off of work or anything else, that’s what he wants to do,” Ancheta says. “He wants to cook for people.”

She continues: “And by the way — it was amazing. It’s the best barbecue we’ve had.”

[From Today]

Northridge is about 30 miles north of LA, just for those unfamiliar with CA. Same weather. I love every part of this story. It’s amazing that Dave brought everything and made dinner, making things a little easier on staff and a little more special for the guests. But I am getting particularly emotional that Dave took such care with the preparation and oversaw that it came out just right. And the planner in me is positively beaming that he took such measures to meet the shelters 6pm serve time. I’ll say it – that’s a Capricorn for you. And a saint. I appreciate that he uses cooking as his meditative down time but he’s a famous man, he has tons of people he could call for a big dinner party. To do this for a community in need when it took him from his own home to do it shows who Dave is.

As Grace Ancheta said, Dave didn’t do this for any glory. He wasn’t the one who leaked the information, and his reps didn’t respond to request for comments. He posed for photos at the Mission and filmed videos the president and CFO who were offsite participating in a run to raise money for the Trebeck Center. Honestly, this is just a story where everyone wins.

Anthony Mackie: to make somebody’s home whole ‘helps me mind, body & soul’

Embed from Getty Images

I know Anthony Mackie doesn’t elicit a lot of feelings from people, but I’ve liked him for years and am glad we’re getting a chance to talk about him. I appreciated that so many of you commented on the story about how he’s personally repairing hurricane-damaged homes in his native New Orleans. Also I’m sure his neutral public-facing image is cultivated. He hustles for his job when it’s required, but he’s focused more on the day-to-day in his life and isn’t caught up in fame. Mackie emphasized that in a recent interview with Yahoo! Entertainment. He said he doesn’t think that much about being Captain America and that he turns his phone off and does things like fishing, landscaping and building. He’s more stressed about whether his kids will text him back and what they’ll say. He also spoke quite a bit about how much he gets from giving back to his community. The quote in the title is actually a paraphrase because he said he gives someone the opportunity to make their home whole. (The full quote wouldn’t fit in our format.) Notice the distinction and how he’s not personally taking credit. Here’s more from Yahoo!:

On the pressure of fame

“I don’t care about that,” Mackie, who will soon star in a new Captain America film. “The pressure that comes along with being Captain America or being Falcon really is something I never think about or pay attention to. That’s why I live in New Orleans — the only thing I’ve got to worry about is where I’m getting my red beans on Monday.”

According to the father of four, the only feedback he truly cares about comes from his kids.

“Trying to get my kids to like me, that is the most stressful thing on earth,” he says with a smile. “I always said I didn’t want to be the cool parent, but now just … when I send my kids something and they send something back, that is the most stressful [process]. Like, you sit there and wait to see if they’re gonna text you back; you call and you see if they’re gonna call you back. It’s one of those things where I never realized how you go through the whole scope of your life not caring about recognition or acceptance from anybody. And this one 3-year-old can break your heart in 30 seconds.”

On his volunteer work

“A lot of times you drive past people and you never know what their experience is in day-to-day life,” he says. “So when I give back, it’s really an opportunity to see what other people are going through and how other people live, so I can know how fortunate I am and so I can know how fortunate my kids are.

“After [Hurricane] Katrina, I learned very quickly that there’s nothing more important than home,” he adds. “So to give somebody the opportunity to make their home whole, holistically that helps me mind, body and soul because it makes me feel good. And I learn a little bit more about myself. It’s not so much I need a pat on the back or not so much I want the recognition, but the idea of seeing someone smile — seeing someone being transformed by the idea of social work and aid — if I can give that little bit of joy, that makes me feel good as well.”

On his passions in life

“I’m a really big outdoor person,” Mackie, 44, says. “I always say I’m not a cellphone person. I love taking my cell phone and leaving it somewhere and not looking at it all day. As long as I know my kids are good, I’m good. I love to go fishing. I love to be out in the woods. I love to be out in the backyard, doing some landscaping in my yard or just building stuff.

“I’ll build anything — I don’t care if it’s Popsicle sticks,” the father of four adds with a laugh. “Just something to take my mind off the outside world, because we’re faced with so much ridicule and judgment and so many questions. At what point do you step away from that and just take care of yourself? So I use those things to kind of take care of my mental [health].”

[From Yahoo!]

I like how he explains his volunteer work as benefitting him too and how he’s able to turn his phone off when he needs a break. I wish I was able to disconnect like that, but I worry that I’ll miss something if I leave my phone home. Yahoo! has clips from their video interview with Mackie and these quotes mean more when you see him say them. There’s something unsaid in his comments about his kids though. I know what he means about kids being brutal but these are very much the concerns of a divorced dad. We know that he split with his first wife a few years ago and that they have four sons. I thought his youngest son was at least five though. Maybe he’s talking about his youngest when he first started talking to him on the phone. I’m here for the new Captain America so honk if you want more stories about Mackie.
