Mariska Hargitay says other celebrities just want to be a dead body on SVU

The Law & Order franchise is notorious for giving up-and-coming actors early TV gigs, many times even their first credited roles on screen. Stars like Sarah Paulson and Bradley Cooper had guest roles on the series before each of their respective breaks, and I always find it a hoot to go back and see big names like that before they were famous. It’s a rite of passage so recognized that even SNL has poked fun at the phenomenon. Apparently, though, once some level of stardom has been achieved, instead of nabbing a cameo that shows off their acting chops, the only part celebrities want to play is that of a dead body. So says Law & Order: SVU star and executive producer Mariska Hargitay, which she described on Late Night With Seth Meyers recently to promote the season 26 premiere. Sure enough, Seth responded with his own story of asking to play a cadaver. Always believe Captain Benson.

There’s one role all the biggest stars want to portray on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, according to star and executive producer Mariska Hargitay.

The actress made an appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers ahead of the SVU season 26 premiere on Thursday. While speaking with the host, she revealed that A-listers who want to guest star on the long-running show all want to play dead.

“All the famous people, you know what they want? To be a dead body,” she told Seth Meyers. “It’s so weird.”

Hargitary recalled she recently spoke to a “big supermodel,” whom she wouldn’t name but noted she was “one of the greats,” who wanted to only portray a dead person, despite the SVU writers having a more elaborate role for her.

“I found out that she loved my show. So I said, ‘Oh my gosh,’ I went to the writers, I said, ‘Can she be on the show?’ And she said she wanted to be a dead body, but then I said, ‘No, no, we have this great part for you,’” the ER actress said. “I call her back, I said, ‘Listen we got it. We’re gonna get you on the show.’ She goes, ‘Oh no, I wanna be a dead body.’”

Admittedly, the late night host was also one of those people who only wanted to play dead.

“I wanted to be a dead body. During the 2007-2008 writers strike, I met all these Law & Order writers, and I was like, ‘I wanna do a cameo, but I just wanna be a dead body,’” Meyers recalled. “And they were like, ‘Oh my God, we’d love to have you on the show.’ But I was like, ‘OK, but I’m a dead person.’”

Despite eventually being offered a role, he turned it down because he “was like, ‘I don’t want lines, I just wanna be a dead person in the park.’”

[From The Hollywood Reporter]

I’m of two minds here. On the one hand, there is something hilarious about the fact that once actors (or other celebrities) have an established footing in the industry, all they seem to want to do on the show is play a dead body. It comes off rather lazy, right? And what kind of fee are they negotiating for the honor of a no-lines, no-life role? Reduced, I hope! On the other hand, and speaking of fees, playing dead is somewhat akin to sleeping, and I think it would actually be kind of brilliant to get paid to sleep. But I say that as a non-celebrity making non-celebrity wages! And as someone who’s really, really good at sleeping. If someone paid me to sleep, they’d get a top-notch professional performance, is alls I’m sayin’. But if these big-timers really want to stick to the dead body roles, I say sure — more opportunity for the next generation of talent! Plus I love the juxtaposition of new Juilliard grads acting their patooties off while Gisele Bundchen (correct me if I got the wrong supermodel, Mariska!) lies prone on the floor. End scene.

Jimmy Kimmel: ‘the worst-smelling guests are the best-looking guys’

A moment that still lives rent-free in my head is Jimmy Kimmel’s clapback to Trump at the end of hosting the Oscars: “Isn’t it past your jail time?” Still good. I guess it’s also been on my mind as the criminal trial has been unfolding in NYC (I know, I know, don’t get your hopes up Kismet). Jimmy appeared on Seth Meyers’ show the other day, and Seth started by asking Jimmy if he had plans to check out the trial scene while he’s in town. He does not. Jimmy then got around to dropping some fragrant tea. Seth commented on Jimmy having been a late night host for nearly 22 years now (yikes, when did that happen?!), and prodded Jimmy for some insight. Pulling from his decades of research in the field, Jimmy shared that “the worst-smelling guests are the best-looking guys.” Go on…

Seth Meyers: Are there things you notice over 20 years of doing this?

Jimmy Kimmel: No, not really. But… I wonder what you think about this. One of the things we get to experience as a talk show host that the home viewers don’t… is the smell of the guests. I found that the worst-smelling guests are the best-looking guys… Some of these guys who’ve been on the cover of People Magazine, sexiest man alive, they have an odor. Like an, ‘I don’t need to wear deodorant because I’m that attractive.’ I think they do it to try to tamp it down a bit, the attractive factor. Like in the way porcupines have quills, to keep the predators from eating them.

SM: I like that. And to keep the predators from having sex with them…

JK: But some guys are so good looking. Like, you’re a good looking guy, but not so good looking that you could afford to not bathe.

SM: Thank you.

JK: For me, with this face, I have to smell really good. You know. I have to be minty fresh at all times.

SM: Even today you said, ‘I need a dressing room with a shower.’

I love this — now every guest who thinks he’s a knockout in the looks department will be on high alert to bathe in cologne before appearing on Kimmel. Or at the very least, some poor person on their team will be responsible for doing sniff tests before releasing their star to the El Capitan Entertainment Center. Oh please let there be an intern on Kimmel’s staff tasked with keeping a database to track celebs with fragrances! It’s for science, people!! Jimmy was careful not to name the stinkers… but guess who’s been on his show 10 times according to IMDb? None other than Jake Gyllenhaal, patient zero for the great unwashed celebrities bathing debate of 2021! Of course I’m not saying outright that Gyllenhaal was the guest who made Kimmel first notice the correlation between “attractiveness” and “stank,” particularly because he’s never been Sexiest Man Alive. But it does smell right.

America Ferrera seth meyers

America Ferrera embarrassed her husband by crying when she met Leonardo DiCaprio

America Ferrera is having a great year. Her powerful speech in Barbie earned its place in cinematic history as a major cultural moment and she was just nominated for her first Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. I’m a huge fan of America, so I’m thrilled that she’s getting the recognition she deserves. (I know I say this often but if you’re looking for a new sitcom to binge, go watch Superstore!)

Last week, America appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers to talk about the movie, her Oscar nomination, and her different experiences at Oscar events. At one point, she shared that she met Martin Scorsese at an Oscar event and was starstruck saying hi to him, prompting Seth to ask her if that happens often. America responded by telling a story about the time she met Leonardo DiCaprio and cried.

Appearing on Late Night with Seth Meyers on Friday, the 39-year-old Barbie star explained that being starstruck will “sneak up on you” at industry events, before she detailed one celebrity encounter in particular that left her “weeping.”

As she explained, it usually happens when she meets someone she had a “childhood connection” to, such as when she met DiCaprio, now 49, at the 2007 Screen Actors Guild Awards, where she won an award for her performance in Ugly Betty.

“I watched Titanic in the movie theaters seven times. [I was] 13, 14 [years old], prime time to be in love with Leonardo DiCaprio, right? OK, so first time I went to the SAG Awards, and I had won for Ugly Betty, I had been onstage and the whole thing,” she recalled. “I was feeling kind of like, ‘I belong here, this is cool.’ ”

At the awards show, she ended up saying “hello” to DiCaprio. “And I promptly departed [from] him, went around the corner and just started weeping,” Ferrera said.

“And my husband, then-boyfriend, was with me and he was like, ‘I am so embarrassed right now.’ ”

Ferrera’s spouse, Ryan Piers Williams, whom she wed in 2011, then encouraged Ferrera to “stop crying.”

“I hope Leonardo DiCaprio never sees this,” Ferrera told Meyers, who joked that he “probably won’t.”

[From People]

That is SO funny. I’ve been trying to think of which celebrity I’d be so starstruck that I’d cry if I met them and I don’t know! Honestly, I think it would be Judy Blume. There are celebrities that I’ve admired or would love to meet, but Judy’s books meant so much to me when I was growing up that I could see myself becoming emotional if I ever met her. I would also love to sit in on a Fiona Apple recording session and see how her genius works. Oh, and Gillian Anderson would definitely inspire a lot of feels. I wouldn’t have cried meeting Leo, though. I was more of a Devon Sawa girl growing up. Those five minutes he’s on screen during Casper

You can watch America’s entire segment with Seth below. They tell more funny stories, including Seth joking about which famous person he met that made him cry (at least, I think he was joking!) and which Full House star she was thrilled to have met. She also talks about meeting Tom Hanks and trying to hold it together as he said nice things to her. It’s a fun interview and she comes across as a really nice, down-to-earth person.

Jimmy Fallon seth meyers

Seth Meyers, Jimmy Fallon & NBC worked out a deal with striking late-show writers

The Writers Guild went on strike this week and no one knows how long the strike will last. The last WGA strike (in 2007-08) lasted 14 weeks and had a profound effect on television, films, awards shows and Hollywood unions at the time. Back then, people understood why the WGA went on strike, but the aftermath wasn’t great – the WGA ended up weakened overall, and the strike was a big reason why we’ve seen a proliferation of reality programming in the years since. This year’s strike feels a lot different – younger people are more pro-union, there’s a better cultural understanding of just how much money writers make for studios, networks and streamers, and there’s a better understanding of just how big “the pie” is, and the unions want their slice. Keep in mind, SAG-AFTRA is standing with the WGA because the actors also know that they’re getting screwed out of a lot of money too.

So, it absolutely feels like there’s a lot of momentum on the WGA’s side and hopefully that means that studios, streamers and networks will come to the table. One of the immediate effects of the strike is that all of the late-night shows – so dependent on the writers’ room – have shut down. Most of the late-night hosts are also WGA members, like Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers. There was some talk about how Fallon wasn’t doing enough for his striking writing staff, but the trade papers report that both Fallon and Seth Meyers met with their people and assured the writers that they would get paid and still have healthcare (for now).

NBC late night hosts Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers will help cover their staff’s pay during the Writers Guild of America strike.

Staffers for Fallon’s Tonight Show and Meyers’ Late Night learned in meetings Wednesday morning that NBC will cover two weeks of pay for workers on the two shows. Fallon and Meyers will personally pay their teams for a third week; health insurance for employees of both programs is guaranteed through September, per a source close to the two shows. NBC didn’t respond to requests for comment.

Along with other late night shows, The Tonight Show and Late Night were among the first productions to shut down after the WGA began picketing on Tuesday.

According to tweets from Tonight Show staffer Sarah Kobos, the three weeks of pay weren’t initially guaranteed: “At a meeting Jimmy wasn’t even at, we are told NBC decided to stop paying us after this week and end our health insurance after this month if the strike is ongoing,” Kobos wrote Tuesday. “They won’t even tell us if we will technically be furloughed. Just active employees who aren’t paid.” Kobos then shared news about the extended salary and healthcare coverage guarantees Wednesday morning.

Meyers, speaking on Late Night on Monday, said: “I love writing. I love writing for TV. I love writing this show. I love that we get to come in with an idea for what we want to do every day and we get to work on it all afternoon and then I have the pleasure of coming out here. No one is entitled to a job in show business. But for those people who have a job, they are entitled to fair compensation. They are entitled to make a living. I think it’s a very reasonable demand that’s being set out by the guild. And I support those demands.”

[From THR & Deadline]

Fallon went to the Met Gala on Monday and I saw a clip of him answering questions about the strike on the carpet (I’m including it below). Fallon honestly didn’t sound like he had given the strike much thought at that point, but I guess people got to him over the next 24 hours. I’m glad NBC is guaranteeing two weeks of pay, and that both Fallon and Meyers are promising a third week, if that’s what it takes. I hope that the relevant parties can come to the table and work sh-t out a lot faster than in the last strike. We’re honestly living through a golden age of television/streaming/content – the writers are merely asking to be paid fairly for what they’re bringing to the table.

Last night a lot of A-list celebs were asked if they support the writers’ strike.

Jimmy Fallon said, “I wouldn’t have a show if it wasn’t for my writers, I support them all the way.”

Who else supports the strike? Thread. pic.twitter.com/EjlRWiRXd3

Susan Sarandon is mad that Bernie-or-Bust folks didn’t get a bigger forum

At this point, I really don’t know what to even say to the Bernie-or-Bust people other than what Sarah Silverman said: you’re being ridiculous. Bernie-or-Bust delegates and agitators have been causing problems at the DNC every night, whether it was heckling and booing Elizabeth Warren and Cory Booker on Day 1, or heckling Leon Panetta on Day 3. Bernie Sanders told his Bernie Bros to work to elect Hillary Clinton and they’re just not listening. Not only are they behaving in such rude and juvenile ways, they’re actually shocked when their behavior has consequences! The Democratic committee pulled a senator who was a Sanders-supporter from speaking at the convention, and now Susan Sarandon and other Bernie-or-Bust people are just so mad.

Susan Sarandon and fellow actors gathered outside the Democratic National Convention Wednesday to protest the DNC’s alleged efforts to silence Bernie Sanders supporters. Sarandon, Danny Glover, Shailene Woodley and Rosario Dawson rallied to express their frustration after former Ohio Senator Nina Turner, a strong supporter of Sanders, was denied the chance to be one of his nominators at the last minute, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Turner was reportedly dismissed from the convention during the first night after her refusal to endorse Hillary Clinton. She was scheduled to introduce the Vermont senator on Monday evening but was stopped from doing so.

“There’s been a lot of difficulty in executing the will of Bernie Sanders’ people and surrogates, and this was just a topping for the whole thing because she was ready to go. And she was very, very disappointed,” Sarandon said. “This has not gone by lightly, and … we are upset.”

Turner did make an appearance at the media tent to thank her supporters but did not take the stage.

[From People]

“The will of Bernie Sanders’ people and surrogates”… not the will of Bernie Sanders, mind you. Bernie Sanders has said in no uncertain terms that he’s supporting Hillary Clinton and that he hopes all of his supporters join him in supporting Hillary. It’s the Bernie-or-Bust people who can’t wrap their heads around it. And they can’t wrap their heads around the idea that the DNC might actually change the schedule and “punish” the Bernie-or-Bust people because of their juvenile behavior.

Here’s Seth Meyers taking on the Bernie or Bust Bros.

US: Kelly Ripa may quit Live if she doesn’t get one of her friends to co-host

2013 CNN Heroes: An All Star Tribute
I saw Live with Michael and Kelly yesterday and while I haven’t watched this show enough to have a frame of reference it looked like things were back to normal. They came out holding hands, they were joking around about eyelash extensions and butt padding and they seemed to have a great rapport. At times Kelly looked uncomfortable but you had to be looking for it. If it wasn’t for all the stories you wouldn’t know that they were having issues and that Michael is leaving in just two weeks. They never brought it up. He’s leaving early though, whether that was due to Kelly throwing a fit or just an executive decision it’s hard to tell. Kelly’s issue seems to be more with the ABC executives who kept her out of the loop than with Michael, who was just following orders not to tell her. Kelly is said to still be playing hardball at ABC after staying away for five days. Us is reporting that she’s threatened to quit if she doesn’t get one of her friends, either Anderson Cooper or Andy Cohen, to cohost.

A source exclusively reveals in the new issue of Us Weekly that Kelly Ripa “is talking about leaving” Live with Kelly and Michael after Michael Strahan announced his exit from the show for a permanent gig at Good Morning America. (Strahan was originally supposed to make the move in September, but the show announced this week that his last day on air will be May 13.)

Although Ripa, 45, returned to the show after a four-episode hiatus Tuesday, April 26, the source says she still feels “blindsided” that producers and Strahan, 44, broke the news to her just moments before the April 19 public announcement: “She considers it a sign of disrespect.”

Now, the 15-year Live vet will wait to see who producers seat beside her to help weigh her options for the future. They’re considering actor Jerry O’Connell, says the source, but Ripa “hopes Anderson Cooper or Andy Cohen gets the job.”

Unfortunately, it’s not likely that one of Ripa’s pals will come aboard, due to their prior commitments (the CNN journalist is covering the election and the Watch What Happens Live host is under contract with Bravo), so the show may not go on for Ripa. Says the source, “Unless one of them can come on, she doesn’t really want to do it.”

[From US Magazine]

This is likely a negotiation tactic to make sure that Kelly has a say this time, because if she really means this it’s short-sighted for a couple of reason. One, just because she’s good friends with someone (she has known both Cooper and Cohen for years) does not mean they’re the best choice for a co-host. Working with a friend can bring up all sorts of problems you wouldn’t have with someone you only know in a professional capacity. And two, both of those guys are super busy with their own shows as US points out. This sounds like Kelly is just trying to get her way, but keep in mind that it could also be a planted story meant to make her look like a diva. We know the network is not above that, think of how TMZ got the news that Kelly’s finances are overextended.

People reports that both Cooper and Cohen will come on as guest hosts following Strahan’s exit and that additional hosts will include Josh Groban and Seth Meyers. It’s unknown when a permanent host will be chosen and a source tells People “They’re prepared to keep cycling people through even if its not resolved by the fall.

E! Online has a think piece about this while debacle. (I really like their editorials lately, they seem to be going in a new direction.) They have quotes from a media expert who says that the way this has played out so far “it looks like Kelly won” against the network. Their source also gives ABC credit for letting Kelly say her piece at the beginning of her return show and not trying to censor or pre-tape her remarks. Also, Bellamy Young of “Scandal” was a guest on Tuesday’s show and she said that although there was tension backstage it all felt completely professional during her interview.

Kathy Lee Gifford, who was replaced by Kelly on Live 15 years ago after she put in 15 years with Regis, has some advice for Kelly which sounds like delicious shade. She said “Be totally professional. I would keep anything that is going on between you private. It’s nobody’s business but yours. But always, always be professional at your job. That’s what you’re hired to do.” You know Kathy does not consider it professional to take a bunch of days off work and then insist that a friend be hired to work with you.
