Willow & Jaden Smith ‘feel bad for their dad’ in the wake of Jada’s memoir

For the past week, Jada Pinkett Smith has been promoting her memoir, Worthy, and talking all about her marriage to Will Smith. They’ve been separated since 2016-ish, although they have no plans to divorce and they still talk about how much they love each other. Will has made some public comments in support of Jada and her memoir, although this week he also posted an Instagram with the message “notifications off.” I guess we’re supposed to believe that he’s not paying attention to all of the noise. So be it – that’s actually pretty healthy. Meanwhile, we haven’t heard anything from Will and Jada’s adult children, Willow (22) and Jaden (25). According to Entertainment Tonight, they’re really tired of their parents making everything so damn public.

The Smith kids are wishing for privacy. Amid Jada Pinkett Smith’s recent shocking revelations — most notably that she and Will Smith have been separated for seven years — a source tells ET that their kids, Willow Smith and Jaden Smith, “feel bad for their dad with all the recent headlines about their parents.”

“They know he has been going through a lot lately and this isn’t helping,” the source says of the Smith kids, which also includes Trey Smith, whom Will shares with his ex-wife, Sheree Zampino. “They wish some of their family’s private matters remained private.”

As for the 55-year-old actor, the source says he’s “trying to stay busy and has been hanging out with his good friends and his kids.”

“He’s trying not to let any outside noise impact him,” the source says. “Will loves Jada and feels like he has always had her back and always will. He has been trying to be supportive, while also taking care of himself.”

I’ll admit that I feel bad for Will too. Jada has made it clear that she’s still ride-or-die for Will (just in a separate home), but I also feel… no one would really hold it against Will if he got a divorce and started a life away from Jada. I don’t think Jada is toxic or whatever, but clearly, they have outgrown each other and it feels like this situation, which they both created, has outlived its usefulness. It’s stagnant. As for the oversharing… Will overshared like crazy when he wrote his memoir. Still, I feel for Willow and Jaden. They don’t want any part of their parents’ dramas.

Venus & Serena Williams at the ‘King Richard’ premiere: stunning sisters?

Here are some photos from last night’s AFI Fest premiere of King Richard, the true story of how Richard Williams trained and coached his daughters Venus and Serena Williams to be the champions they are today. Will Smith plays Richard Williams and Venus and Serena executive produced the film, and everything was done with their permission and say-so. What’s exciting about this is that new generations will be introduced to the story of the Williams sisters’ rise to dominance, and it also refocuses a lot of energy onto Venus. Venus was the first through the door, she was the older sister and everything Serena did, she did because she was trying to be like Venus. I love that this is the story the sisters wanted to tell, because Venus’s journey and glass-ceiling-breaking is often lost in the narrative of Serena’s historic dominance.

I thought for a second that Serena wore one of her own designs, from her S By Serena collection, but no – both Serena wore David Koma (as did Olympia, who wore a smaller version of Serena’s catsuit). Venus Williams wore Bach Mai. I love Venus’s visual callback with the beads in her hair – that was a huge f–king deal when the Williams sisters were teenagers, the fact that they played tennis with beads in their hair.

I’m also including photos of the Smith family – Will and Jada attended the premiere together, and Willow and Jaden posed together, separate from their parents. A few months ago, I would have said that the critical buzz meant that Will was one of the big contenders for Best Actor awards. But as I said when I covered his GQ interview… Will stepped on his own Oscar campaign by releasing his memoir. All of the headlines are about his f–ked up marriage drama. Who is even talking about his performance in this film?

Willow Smith shaved her head in a performance: I want to promote expression

Last week, Jada Pinkett Smith credited her daughter Willow for encouraging her to shave off her hair after years of dealing with hair loss. Now, Willow has decided to upgrade her own hair game. During a live stream of her new album release concert on Facebook Watch, Willow remixed her 2011 hit, “Whip My Hair,” into a punk rock sensation. During the performance, Willow had what looks like a band member shave her hair off on stage while she played a guitar rift. Let’s just say, we now see where Willow inherited her beauty. Below are more details on Willow’s hair transformation via Today:

On Friday, the 20-year-old singer released her new album, “lately I feel EVERYTHING,” and in tandem with the release, she also produced a concert with Facebook Watch. She ended the almost hour-long set with a new punk rock version of the song that made her famous in 2010, “Whip My Hair.”

“My favorite song in the set right now just because of how it feels to sing would probably have to be ‘Whip My Hair,” Smith, who is the daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, said during a behind-the-scenes interview.

“I am thinking about shaving my head during the ‘Whip My Hair’ performance,” she later added. “This is gonna be my third time in my life shaving my head. I’m always shaving my head at monumental times in my life when things are really changing and this is definitely one of those moments.”

Near the end of her energetic performance, Willow sits down in a chair as someone shaves her head while she continues to play the guitar.

I love how Willow says that she has shaved her hair off three times in her young life and that she does that when she in the middle of a life change. If this isn’t the story of most Black women, then I don’t know what to tell you. Every time I am going through some sort of life change I either cut all my hair off or shave it off, so I can relate. I also love how Willow made the connection between her “Whip My Hair” anthem to her desire to spread self love, acceptance and positivity. Like I said before, I used to play “Whip My Hair” for my Korean students back in 2012. My students loved that song. It really has been a delight watching Willow grow up into the beautiful confident woman she is. I know a lot of people used to side-eye the Smith kids but they really turned out to be quite grounded adults. As for Willow entering into punk rock, I love how she wishes to represent Black women, despite seeing the racist abuse her mother received when touring with her band. The pink genre is typically quite white and male. As talented and determined Willow is, I am sure she will continue to inspire Black hair trends and Gen Z to do things they were told they couldn’t.

Jada Pinkett Smith shaved her head: ‘Willow made me do it… it was time’

In 2018, Jada Pinkett-Smith revealed that she had been wearing headwraps and scarves because she had started losing her hair. Jada said that her hair started falling out in clumps in the shower one day. I could tell that it was a traumatic experience for Jada but she never mentioned it again, until recently. Earlier this week, Willow Smith posted a photo to Instagram where both she and Jada had freshly shaved heads. Jada posted a screenshot of Willow’s post, stating that she was motivated by her daughter to finally “let it go.” Below are a few more details from People:

On Monday, the actress re-posted an Instagram photo of herself and 20-year-old Willow Smith (who she shares with husband Will Smith) revealing her freshly shaved head. “Willow made me do it because it was time to let go,” she captioned the post.

“BUT … my 50′s are bout to be Divinely lit with this shed❣️😜” the Red Table Talk host added.

Willow, who has rocked a buzz cut on and off for years, was the first to unveil her mom’s new ‘do, posting the same photo with the caption, “💕🙏🏾”

OMG! Jada looks stunning with her head shaved. Let me tell you shaving it all off is freeing AF. In 2018 I was under a lot of stress and like Jada my hair started falling out in clumps. So I decided to just shave it off. I shaved my hair off three times between 2018 and 2019 and it was the most freeing thing I ever did. In fact, I never felt sexier. Somehow, shaving off my hair made me feel more feminine which is the opposite of what we are taught. Now it grows back quite thick. Perhaps by shaving it off, Jada will give her hair follicles the opportunity to regenerate but if not, Jade wears a bald fade well. I also like that Beyonce’s mom, Tina Lawson, commented on the picture stating that Jada’s new look highlighted her “soulful eyes” and “beautiful face.” I agree, Jada looks stunning. I am happy that her daughter was so supportive and encouraged her mom to let go of her beliefs around hair. I will also add that Jada’s bald ‘do also makes her look more youthful. Jada better get it because I don’t think she has ever looked more beautiful. I am proud of her for taking the leap and am happy that she is allowing us in on her hair journey like several other notable Black women. I hope these Black women start a movement of embracing their hair in all of its variety. Until then, Jada betta get some hoops and a bold lipstick and rock that ish like 1980s Grace Jones because I am here for it.

Willow Smith: My mom got so much hate, sexism and racism while touring

Willow Smith is all grown up and it has seemingly happened right in front of our eyes. I remember the little girl whipping her hair back forth, singing the summer anthem about loving our natural tresses. For the last two years I have watched Willow grow from teenager to grown ass woman on Red Table Talk. Now Willow, who is more known for her pop and R&B songs, is returning to a genre that she has always loved but was afraid to approach, punk rock. Willow has a new profile in L’Officiel USA. She opened up about watching her mother, Jada, get racially abused when she used to tour with her nu-metal band, Wicked Wisdom. Willow said that experience gave her anxiety about stepping into the rock genre until recently. It was Jada’s courage and tenacity that eventually convinced Willow to “woman up” to pursue her dream of being a Black woman creating rock music. Below are a few more highlights from L’Officiel USA:

Smith, typically a producer of experimental R&B and singer-songwriter-indebted pop, had experimented with rock-adjacent sounds before (most prominently on The Anxiety, but also on earlier tracks, like “Human Leech,” from her 2017 album The 1st), but for a long time, she was fearful of fully stepping into this new arena, despite her longtime reverence for the genre and the culture surrounding it.

At least part of this fear stemmed from what she thought was a limit to her vocal range. After spending over a decade comfortably crooning over sultry production, the shift in genre would force Smith to expand her vocal palette. On “Transparent Soul,” the lead single from her new project, for example, Smith gives into pop-punk’s token bratty speed-shouting in the song’s verses but blends that with soaring vocals in the title-referencing chorus. The singer personally reached out to Barker to ask him to contribute percussion, which he does on several of the album’s tracks. And when combined with her own skillful guitar-shredding, the propulsive emo energy of Blink’s best work shines through.

Coincidentally, the other aspect of Smith’s insecurity was also key to her eventual inspiration. From the ages of 4 to 10, Smith accompanied her mom on tour—around the same time she became a box office sensation thanks to The Matrix, Jada was the frontwoman for nu-metal band Wicked Wisdom. Such were some of the younger Smith’s first musical experiences, and predictably, watching her mom keep crowd after crowd entertained had a profound impact on the impressionable child. Also influential were some of the unsavory facets that affect Black women in the rock realm. “My mom got so much hate,” she admits. “It was intense racism and sexism, just packed on to the tens. People giving her death threats, throwing glass at her onstage. Some crazy stuff went down when she was touring with her band.”

“I got to see that hate firsthand,” she continues. “It was so scary to me, and I think I internalized a little bit.” But as she worked through her anxiety in other parts of her life, the singer also found that she could shed some of the insecurities she had about her music, too. “Every time I feel that coming on, I just go back to my memories of my mom and how she would deal with actual physical danger—she just rose above it,” she adds. “Obviously, she was scared. But she really showed me what ‘womaning up’ really was, by taking a stance and not being afraid of other people’s judgements and perceptions. I really wanted to just go within that place in myself and try something new, regardless of what my insecurities were.”

And now, while she’s quick to correct anyone who might conflate the nu-metal of her mother’s Ozzfest-approved musical venture and the playful pop-punk of her own latest work, Smith is indeed proud to be carrying the torch for Black women working under the rock umbrella. “I just wanted to fulfill that desire that I had ever since I was 10 or 12 of singing rock music, of being a Black woman singing rock music,” she lets off, pausing ever so briefly to emphasize the word “Black” in a way that effectively reveals how important representation is for her.

The rock genre needs more Black musicians as it came from the Black community in the first place. I really am proud of Willow. I didn’t realize how talented she was until I saw her playing with Jada’s band for Jada’s birthday. I hope that Willow never allows haters to keep her from pursuing her dream. I want to hear Willow’s album, The Anxiety, because I just love listening to someone grow in their craft. (It’s out on July 16th.) Plus I used to suffer from major anxiety before I started practicing yoga and pranayamas so this album is right up my alley. Willow’s art installation before COVID is not necessarily my style but I am glad she is willing to put herself out there. I loved Whip My Hair and I used to play it for my kids when I taught English in S. Korea back in 2012. The kids loved the song and the Sesame Street rendition.

I have a feeling that we haven’t seen the best of Willow yet. To be fair she is only twenty and has a lot of years ahead of her. I like the fact that Willow is willing to reach out to people like Travis Barker to help out on her album. The fact that Travis contributed and basically gave her a seal of approval makes me like him even more. It’s been evident since Willow was a child that she is tenacious AF and isn’t one to back down from a challenge.

Jada Pinkett Smith, her mom and daughter steamed their yonis on Red Table Talk

The last time we really talked about Jada Pinkett-Smith is when she admitted her romantic entanglement with August Alsina to Will Smith on Red Table Talk. It was definitely a teachable moment and many people had their assumptions about the Smith’s relationship confirmed. I am sure there have been other things to come out about Jada since then, but nothing has been as notable as that conversation with Will. Until now, depending on comfortable you are with women talking about their vaginas. In a new episode of Red Table Talk, Jada, Willow, and Gammy Adrienne introduce their audience to vaginal steaming. (More on that below.) They’re then joined by author Queen Afua at the Red Table to talk about personal wellness and vaginal health. Below are a few more details via Hollywood Life:

The blonde said it felt “like a little tingle, tingle” during the June 9 episode of the Facebook Watch show, which featured an interview with wellness coach and author Queen Afua.

But, before the mother, daughter and grandma chatted with their guest, they each donned a lilac robe to test out the Goddess Detox vaginal steaming set. Despite saying “Jesus” when Jada told her that they were going to do the process on camera, Adrienne, 67, gamely sat on the bowl filled with hot water and herb teabags.

“This is real queen throne action right here,” Jada said during the steaming session… “This is what I love. Steaming is an ancient practice, which originated in Asia and Africa and it was originally used to cleanse yourself after you finishing menstruating.”

“I’ve read somewhere that vaginal steams are like an aphrodisiac,” she also added. However, the wife and mom said the practice had a deep meaning and that she loved the feeling of “spending time with your vagina to just show it appreciation and care.”

But the actress seemed prepared to face some backlash from Red Table Talk fans as they openly discussed steaming and appreciating their private parts. “I’m telling you right now, I don’t want to hear nothing about this show, it being TMI and all that,” she said. “Because if you can listen to all these little rap artists talk and abuse the vagina you sure as hell can watch women give it honor and praise and spend quality time. So I don’t want to hear it… I don’t really care because we have to change the narrative around the vagina and women have to take it back.”

I had my vagina steamed at the Yoni Day Spa in Oakland and let me tell you it really is an amazing experience. I am loving how Red Table Talk is opening the conversation around women appreciating their damn vaginas. The fact that we have to give our vaginas pet names (flower, vajajay, hooha) is already problematic. I am all for Jada and her family broaching such an important conversation not just around female bonding but around reproductive health and pleasure. Our vaginas are not made just for pushing out babies. However there have not been any significant medical studies that prove that vaginal steaming is helpful or harmful. I personally enjoyed it, it was very relaxing. Our vaginas have their own cleansing process so steaming them is unnecessary and can be dangerous if the steam is too hot. For me it was more about bonding with my sister friends and relaxing.

I have also read portions of Queen Afua’s book, Sacred Woman: A Guide to Healing the Feminine Body, Mind, and Spirit. I love her openness about women viewing their vaginas and sexual pleasure as sacred. She does go into some detail about women’s reproductive health but many of her claims have not been medically verified. Is it TMI to talk about our vaginas? I don’t think so. I believe it is a necessary conversation that we should get comfortable with having. I am here for extensive conversations where women learn from each other about taking care of our bodies, especially our private parts. I am definitely going to watch this episode just to encourage black and brown women in particular to have open discussions about their sexual organs and vajajays.

Willow Smith, 15, is Chanel’s latest brand ambassador: great choice or meh?

Back in 2010, Jada and Will Smith seemed hellbent on forcing their kids to act like adults and have adult-sized careers. Willow began a music career, and Jaden began an acting career. While Jaden has continued with his public life, Willow has spent much of the past five years or so taking a step back. Reportedly, she was the one to tell her dad that she just “wanted to be a kid” for a while rather than a celebrity/singer/model/whatever. Well, now at the tender age of 15, Willow is re-entering public life.

These photos are of Willow and Jada at the Chanel show during Paris Fashion Week this week. Willow and Jada were invited to sit front-row at the show because Willow is now the newest face of Chanel, as she has just been named the latest “brand ambassador” for 2016. Willow joins a long list of famous Chanel brand ambassadors, including at various times Blake Lively, Gig Hadid, Lily-Rose Depp, Kendal Jenner, Cara Delevingne, etc. I actually think it’s smart to start diversifying the ambassadors these days, so at least there’s that. The Chanel press release simply read: “Karl Lagerfeld has chosen Willow Smith as a new CHANEL ambassadress.”

Personally, I don’t hate it (but I don’t love it either). It’s not as offensive to me as Jaden Smith being hired to front a campaign for Louis Vuitton womenswear, mostly because I am unclear as to whether Willow will actually be doing print ads for Chanel. I think brand-ambassadors just have to wear Chanel to big events and go to like two runway shows a year. But if Willow’s growth spurt tells us anything, it’s that she might make modeling her newest career.

Incidentally, Willow is wearing a Chanel catsuit/wetsuit in these photos. She looks like a superhero! I absolutely loathe the shoes and the eye makeup though.
