Tom Hiddleston has been promoting The Life of Chuck in recent days, and he’s been doing all of his appearances solo. I had a brief moment last week where I wondered “hm, I wonder if he’s still with Zawe Ashton?” As it turns out, they’re absolutely still together. She just wasn’t traveling with him because she’s pregnant with their second kid! They welcomed their first child in the fall of 2022, and since then, we’ve seen them at various events like Wimbledon and the BAFTA tea party. They’ve definitely been quieter in the past year. Looks like Tom and Zawe were adjusting to parenthood and quietly plotting their next baby!

Ahead of her appearance on the red carpet for the closing of the SXSW festival in London, Zawe Ashton has a very special announcement to make, shared exclusively with Vogue: she and her husband Tom Hiddleston are expecting their second child.

Given the momentous nature of the news, choosing the right look for the occasion was paramount. To reveal her growing baby bump, the glowing British actor will take to the red carpet in a resplendent, sleeveless sky-blue silk crepe gown [from Emilia Wickstead] with tumbling frill details, worn beneath a svelte, puddling cape in matching fabric.

Announcing your second pregnancy to British Vogue alongside a write-up of your couture is very classy! I’m being serious – why confirm anything to People Magazine when you could announce your pregnancy with a special Vogue photoshoot? Rihanna would approve. Anyway, I’m very happy for Tom and Zawe. They’ve been together for what, six years or so? And they’ve been largely private – while they walk red carpets together, we don’t even know the name of their baby. We don’t even know if they ever got married (they got engaged in 2022). She’s 40 years old, 41 in July. Tom turned 44 in February. Congrats to them, and sympathy to JArthy.

Tom Hiddleston & Zawe Ashton attended the BAFTA Tea Party in LA

Here are some photos from Saturday’s BAFTA Tea Party event in Los Angeles. BAFTA – the British Film Academy – hosts an annual tea party in LA during the awards season, although I’m pretty sure the date has changed several times in recent years. It’s just one of many events on the awards-season circuit, although thankfully for most celebrities, they’re not expected to go all-out in gowns and tuxedos. Most women just wore cute dresses and the men mostly wore suits with no ties.

I’m surprised to see that Tom Hiddleton and his partner/fiancee Zawe Ashton were even in town. Let me see why they were in LA this weekend… oh, Tom was nominated for a Critics Choice Award for Loki, that’s why. Loki was snubbed at the Emmys though, but I bet he’ll turn up at the Emmys anyway! Anyway, Tom and Zawe are very cute together but Zawe’s dress is awful! So unflattering.

I’m also including photos of Rosamund Pike (in a twee Simone Rocha), Quinta Brunson (in Monique Lhullier) and Emily Blunt (in Oscar de la Renta, without her husband). Other people attending this event: Paul Giamatti, Elizabeth Debicki, Carey Mulligan, America Ferrera and Mark Ruffalo.

Tom Hiddleston & Zawe Ashton stepped out for the 2023 Evening Standard Awards

Tom Hiddleston and Zawe Ashton are so Sussex-coded, right? A good-looking redheaded man falls for a beautiful Black woman and his fanbase has a meltdown. The ginger & the beautiful woman defy the odds, and stay together and have a baby. So that’s where we are now. Tom and Zawe walked the carpet of the Evening Standard Film Awards last night. She wore a glittery blue dress with a cape, which is also Meghan-coded! Tom wore velvet, because that man loves velvet. They coordinated their ensembles and they look so happy. The one criticism I have about her dress is that the sequined “cape” effect isn’t done properly and it’s giving her linebacker shoulders.

In the fall of 2022, Zawe and Tom welcomed their first child. It took months for a confirmation that they had a boy, and we still don’t know the kid’s name? I bet it’s something traditional, perhaps even old-fashioned British. They got engaged, officially, when Zawe was pregnant, reportedly in March 2022. We haven’t heard anything about them having a lowkey wedding, although I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they had gotten married by now and simply not told many people. Zawe is wearing her engagement ring in these photos but I can’t tell if she’s wearing any kind of wedding band.

Tom Hiddleston & Zawe Ashton came out for the Wimbledon men’s final

Yesterday’s Wimbledon men’s final was jam-packed with celebrities and royals. People were really excited to see Novak Djokovic play Carlos Alcaraz on Novak’s favorite surface, grass. The match ended up being pretty classic, with Alcaraz needing five sets to get the win over Djokovic, the seven-time Wimbledon champion (who won four of those championships in a row). Tom Hiddleston came out with his wife/partner (I don’t know if they’re actually married) Zawe Ashton. Zawe gave birth to their first child last year, probably in September or October. We still don’t know anything about the kid! Zawe and Hiddles look happy but I dislike her dress so much. Designers these days are hellbent on making those puffy-shouldered monstrosities.

Everyone was obsessed with Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz in the Royal Box. So many cutaways to them! They’re so hot together.

King Felipe of Spain came out to watch Alcaraz (who is Spanish). Felipe and Letizia are big tennis fans, and they were present at Wimbledon in 2008 when Rafael Nadal won his first Wimbledon title too. I guess Letizia didn’t want to travel this weekend though.

Brad Pitt went to the final with Guy Ritchie. The Wimbledon social media account was all aflutter about this abuser. Gross.

Ariana Grande was working on Wicked before the strike, so I guess she stayed in town for the final. She was seated next to Andrew Garfield… and she was not wearing her wedding ring. Is this gossip? Because Garfield and Grande definitely looked friendly.

Tom Hiddleston & Zawe Ashton reportedly welcomed their first child

Tom Hiddleston and Zawe Ashton have welcomed their first child. Given she was heavily pregnant while she promoted Mr. Malcolm’s List over the summer, I suspect that Zawe gave birth more than a month ago and we’re only hearing about it now. Tom and Zawe have known each other for years, then they started seeing each other during their West End (then Broadway) run of Betrayal. They got engaged at some point, with Zawe wearing the engagement ring at the BAFTAs this year. Us Weekly broke the baby story, which sounds more like an educated guess more than anything else:

Growing their family! Zawe Ashton secretly gave birth to her and fiancé Tom Hiddleston’s first child, Us Weekly confirms.

“Tom and Zawe are loving being new parents and are filled with joy,” a source exclusively tells Us. “They have been having the struggles of new parents and aren’t sleeping much but are thrilled.”

The Velvet Buzzsaw actress, 38, first announced she was pregnant in June at the Mr. Malcolm’s List premiere in New York City. Though the Loki actor, 41, stars alongside her in the film, he was not present for the event, so she walked the red carpet solo in a floor-length gown that showed off her growing baby bump.

[From Us Weekly]

I want to know if they had a boy or a girl! I know it’s nosy, I don’t care. Come on, is it a Hiddlesgirl or a Hiddlesboy? What’s the name? I suspect that the baby’s name will probably be something Anglo, like Elizabeth or James. I also suspect that Tom and Zawe probably slipped away somewhere and had a quiet wedding. While I’m proud of Tom for finally figuring out how to live a more undercover personal life, I also miss hearing from him and about him. Anyway, congrats to Tom, Zawe and their Dragonfly Baby.

Zawe Ashton: ‘We don’t fuel the fire of genuine enthusiasm in the UK’

Zawe Ashton covers the October issue of Tatler to promote Mr Malcolm’s List, which is a period romantic-comedy in the vein of Jane Austen or Bridgerton, I guess. Freida Pinto is the lead, but Zawe has a significant role. Zawe is also engaged to Tom Hiddleston and pregnant with their first child. She speaks of that and she speaks around it with Tatler – she has clear lines she doesn’t really want to cross, but she does mention Tom and she’s clearly very pregnant. I’ve always sort of thought that Zawe’s energy is very calm, focused and driven, but I never realized (before now) that she’s actually kind of similar to Hiddles – she’s chatty, upbeat, a bit dorky and “keen.” You can feel her bristling against the hurdles and roadblocks set in her path since birth but she doesn’t come right and say “god, Britain is a terrible place to be a Black woman.” Some highlights from Tatler:

Whether she gets a lot of villain roles: ‘I think that’s probably a phase I’ve always been in – certainly the outsider phase. I’ve always played outliers, and that’s great. I think it’s where you can move the needle the most.’

Summers in Uganda. ‘There’s a lot of strength in having a duality. We’re finally seeing that more and more now as something to be celebrated. When I was younger, that wasn’t the case.’

Bullied in school & at drama school: ‘It was rough. They break you down.’ Why? ‘I think they saw my keenness, my enthusiasm… I don’t know why, but sometimes they really want to wash you out.’

She pitched a show like ‘Girls’ which was in development hell: ‘There was just this weird resistance. And bullying. Bullying, demeaning, gaslighting… I was yelled at by one producer because I was questioning something about my own work.’ I venture cautiously that, to some, Ashton might just have been too much of a multi-hyphenate. ‘Yep. We didn’t do that kind of thing here until the success of things like I May Destroy You or Fleabag.’

She supports other artists: ‘We don’t fuel the fire of genuine enthusiasm in the UK. It’s like, “Don’t get ideas above; stay calm; it’s not that good.” I appreciate that, because I’m London through and through – I love that acerbic quality and I love that edge. But it can be really damaging.’

Working with Tom Hiddleston on ‘Betrayal’: ‘Tom and I had done a reading together of the central scene, at a gala for Harold Pinter’s birthday’.

Pregnant with Tom’s baby: ‘Thanks, it’s wonderful.’ I’d read somewhere that she’d always wanted children. ‘I know… I used to talk about it all the time in interviews – it was really unsuitable.’ Has she learnt the art of discretion now? ‘I’ve got to learn it.’

Pregnant at 38: ‘You’re told, “Don’t get pregnant” but also “Don’t leave it too long” because then you’re going to be an old maid. I’ve been prehistoric in this industry since I was 25. The mixed messaging is rough and has to be addressed.’ She hadn’t felt stressed by her biological clock ticking: ‘It was just suddenly this self-permission comes over you that goes against all that messaging.’

Announcing the pregnancy by showing up with her bump: ‘I don’t want to talk about my personal life. I didn’t feel like I had to do anything… it felt like [the pregnancy news] happened in the right way. [It is a] really, really, vital moment where we’re talking about women and their autonomy when it comes to their bodies.’ The Roe v Wade reversal had been announced just days before, and she had no desire to ‘be cute’ about it. ‘I’m not into “announcements” or “reveals”. I’m into trying to carry the narrative as much as possible myself, rather than anyone else feeling like they have an exclusive on my body.’

Doors are opening for young actors of color: ‘I can see that opportunities for so many under-represented students are suddenly there. I don’t worry about them the way I worried for myself – and that’s really lovely. Systemic racism isn’t going anywhere fast. But they can imagine themselves in huge franchises, in the new Netflix show, in the lead in West End theatres.’

She loves Jane Austen’s books but not P&P: ‘I’m not really a Pride and Prejudice girl’, she frowns. Not into Darcy? ‘No, too austere. People love that. I know friends who are like, “I love how emotionally unavailable you are.” I’m like, “Oh gawd!”’

[From Tatler]

“We don’t fuel the fire of genuine enthusiasm in the UK. It’s like, ‘Don’t get ideas above; stay calm; it’s not that good’.” As in, don’t get ideas above your station, Britain is still racist and classist and enthusiasm is always suspicious. Tatler has a thing about mentioning the Duchess of Sussex in random interviews but they didn’t in this one. Perhaps because it was too “on the nose.” Because the whole piece felt like one big subweet of Meghan’s experience and culture shock.

And yes, the fact that she’s not into Mr. Darcy makes so much sense. Hiddles isn’t brooding or austere, he’s a big, energetic puppy. Of course, her favorite Austen books are Persuasion and Emma.

Zawe Ashton: Making a commitment to work on yourself is sexy

Zawe Ashton stars in Mr. Malcolm’s List, out now on demand! It’s a regency romcom in the style of Downton Abbey and I’m excited to see it. I didn’t realize I could rent it at home and it’s reasonable too, it’s not a $20 rental at this point. Zawe, who is expecting her first baby with Tom Hiddleston, has a new quick Q&A interview with Elle UK. She and Tom have been private about her pregnancy for the most part and she doesn’t dish on her preparations for the baby or anything. She does have some wise things to say about self love and personal growth. The more I learn about Zawe the more I like her. She gives thoughtful interviews. Here’s some of what she told Elle UK, with more at the source.

Zawe Ashton… said the concept of ‘ice cream on a stick’ actually sums up her personality perfectly, which is ‘sweet, enjoyable and relatively low maintenance’.

Discussing her biggest beauty faux pas, Ashton recalled: ‘All the way through university I was definitely wearing a concealer that was about 10 shades too light for me,’ before clarifying: ‘Not even light,’ but rather a ‘chalky mismatched tone’.

Talking self-love, Ashton said: ‘I think making a commitment to continually work on yourself is, is is probably one of the sexiest things you can do to be honest.

‘And you don’t necessarily think that when you’re a lot younger and your dating and your getting into relationships, but making making that vow to continue to grow as a human being and to continue to investigate the more complex parts of yourself or the most broken parts of yourself or the less attractive parts of yourself is a huge gift that you can give.’

She continued: ‘Learning how to fall back in love with yourself I think will always guarantee you being able to continuously fall in in love with anyone else.’

[From Elle UK]

That’s really deep actually, that you need to fall back in love with yourself. So many people talk about loving yourself, but what about falling in love with yourself? Like giving yourself time to notice and appreciate the things you do and care about. I also like the line I put in the title about how working on yourself and healing yourself is sexy. For too long I tried to push things down that I didn’t want to face but that just leads to unhealthy coping mechanisms. I’m learning that we’re all broken in different ways and that if I face those things I can move forward. I like that Zawe also loves ice cream and thrift shopping. She’s also said that she’s superstitious, so we have a lot in common. I am excited for her to welcome her baby with Tom but I get the sense that we won’t hear about it right away, nor will we see photos of the baby.
