Hailey Bieber in Saint Laurent at the VF Oscar party: boring or elegant?

Hailey Bieber turned up at the Vanity Fair Oscar party in Saint Laurent. Two different fabrics, two different shoulders, two different sleeves — one gloved, one inexplicably dragging on the floor… The latter would drive me crazy. This look is so dramatic, yet somehow still so boring. As is her hair.

Sarah Michelle Gellar wore a beautiful blue floral toile thread work embroidered Oscar de la Renta. It’s a great take on a column dress. And the detailing and color are amazing. I love this and she looks like she loves it, which just makes a great look even better. And her eye makeup and earrings match the blue!

Yara Shahidi also popped in red and white Bottega Veneta. She looks like a Valentine in a short column dress and gloves. It looks like the appliqués are flowers and leaves and maybe butterflies? This is a cool look, and also looks like she can move in it. The slicked back hair and subtle makeup work perfectly with the dress. And under the gloves she had a red-tipped manicure.

Vanessa Hudgens changed from her classic pre-show host gown into an edgier Roberto Cavalli. There’s a lot going on, but I love this and would totally wear it (though not as well). There’s fringe, there’s a lace-up deep-V front, there’s zebra print, there’s leopard print… It’s a lot and it works and she looks amazing. I’m not even mad at the hair! Even if you’re engaged, this is how you want to look when you cross paths with your ex, which happened briefly outside the party.

Danielle Brooks was in Nina Ricci. I wouldn’t have guessed we’d see a black bikini under a see-through polka dot catsuit (with gloves) under a Cruella de Vil-colored fur coat. She accessorized with sunglasses in some pics, which was a vibe. This look is fun and looks more comfortable than some of the gowns.

Zendaya in Versace at the NAACP Image Awards: stunning or dated?

Here are some photos from this weekend’s NAACP Image Awards. Zendaya, as always, was a huge hit on the red carpet. She’s such a Fashion Girl, my God. What’s amazing about Zendaya is how she elevates boring or even bad looks. Like, this Versace gown is – by itself – not all that great. The little fabric suction cups on her chest are simply a bad design element. But the effect overall is that Zendaya looks amazing, because she’s so beautiful and fresh. I love her lil’ haircut too, that length is PERFECT on her.

Blac Chyna looks surprisingly put together in this orange gown. I dislike orange, in general, and the shoulders of the dress bug me, but whatever. This was an okay appearance for her.

Yara Shahidi in a mullet dress – to me, Yara is a lot like Zendaya in that they’re young and they have great fashion sense and a lot of young people are incredibly inspired by them. This look is a miss though – the color is the only thing I like.

Regina Hall – I actually love this dress? It looks so cool. Zendaya would be fire in this dress.

Sophia Bush looked dowdy as hell, but good for her.

Shannon Thornton in Tony Ward. This is such a throwback look to the early ‘00s. Paris Hilton used to wear dresses like this all the time.

Michelle Obama to young people: ‘practice pushing through the fear’

Forever First Lady, Michelle Obama, celebrated her 58th birthday Monday. Michelle shares a birthday with Betty White, James Earl Jones, Jim Carrey and Muhammad Ali. Michelle decided to be an inspiration to college students for her birthday. Michelle sat down with Yara Shahidi for BET’s Becoming: Michelle Obama in Conversation which aired on Monday. In her conversation with Yara, Michelle addressed student audience about pushing past their fears. Michelle said that the practice of not allowing fear to stop us is like exercising a muscle. Michelle also stated that parents should not project their own fears onto their children. Below are a few more highlights via Yahoo! Entertainment:

“My advice for people, what allowed me to step outside of my small six-block area, it was practicing pushing through that fear,” continued Obama. “Practicing transition. Practicing facing that precipice, that thing you feel in your stomach, that thing in your brain that tells you to hold back when your heart and soul tells you to go ahead, and you’re right at the corner of that.”

Obama went on to discuss how parents play into their children’s fear, explaining that some kids, who are first-generation college students, don’t have parents who understand what they are being sent into.

“Mom doesn’t know what college is like. So think about that. You let your baby leave your home to get on a plane to go live somewhere else with people you don’t know? So sometimes you have your parents’ fears holding you back. My mom went through that. I think one of the most beautiful things about my mother’s parenting, my parents’ parenting, was they pushed us beyond their fears, they encouraged us to do what they told us they were afraid to do, you know? And that’s powerful, right? But the more you practice pushing beyond that point of comfort, the easier it gets,” said Obama.

“Treat fear as a challenge, you know? As a muscle. Breaking it is a muscle that you need to develop, right? And that’s how, shoot, my husband coming to me, saying, ‘I’m going to run for President, how do you feel about that?’ My logical mind said, ‘No! No, no, no, no, no, I am very afraid of all of this.’ But I had all this practice over my lifetime of jumping over hurdles and using those tools that got me over to say, ‘I can do this. I can do this with you. I can do this and keep my children safe. I can do this and be a use to the country, so let’s go for it. And if I had said no, I wouldn’t be here today, you know? There’s a lot of good stuff on the other side of fear, if you, you know, if you learn how to maneuver it.”

I will forever love Michelle Obama and am not ashamed to admit that I voted for Barack because of her. I was not able to find a full video of Michelle’s conversation with Yara. The excerpts I’ve seen are definitely things that everyone needs to hear, no matter their age. I needed this advice when I was younger. I went out into the world at 18 without guidance because I was making choices that no one in my family had made. The mistakes, fears, stumbles, and triumphs were all mine to claim. Thank the goddess for the few people who came into my life to help me navigate. There was so much truth in what Michelle said about how we can take on the fears of our family. Much of my fear was definitely inherited. But once I realized those fears were not mine, it made my life that much easier. Courage is not the absence of fear but the willingness to push past it. As Michelle said, the more we push past our fears, the easier it becomes over time. Courage is a muscle that must be exercised daily. I am looking forward to watching this conversation in its entirety because the Forever First Lady has dropped some amazing nuggets of wisdom.

Yara Shahidi asked to present early at Emmys so she could go to class Monday

Yara Shahidi wowed at the Met Gala in a Dior gown which was a nod to Josephine Baker. But Sunday’s green Dior Emmys look may be her best yet this season. I am sure that Yara is not caught up in the glitz and glamour of her job but she seems to enjoy getting all glammed up. Yara also has a life outside of Hollywood. She is a student at Harvard who is committed to her education. Yara is so serious about it that she requested to present early at the Emmys. She needed to catch a red-eye back to Massachusetts so that she could be in class the next day. Below are a few more highlights from Yara’s interview with Nischelle Turner and Kevin Frazier from Entertainment Tonight:

“I do fly out tonight to make it to class in time,” the Harvard student, who presented the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series award to Ted Lasso’s Brett Goldstein, told ET. “… The lovely people at The Academy really helped me out because I was like, ‘Guys, I have a hard out to make this flight.’”

In addition to her presenting duties, Shahidi was on hand in support of Black-ish, which is currently shooting its final season. While the show, which was up for five trophies, including Outstanding Comedy Series, didn’t come out victorious this time, Shahidi was thrilled to be at the ceremony to celebrate its nods in person.

“It is really exciting,” she said of being at the Emmys. “So many moments like these where we get to celebrate our work have kind of been suspended because of the pandemic, among many other important things.”

The ceremony, Shahidi told ET, was “just a great moment to look at what we have done.”

“I feel like I have not had a chance sometimes to really reflect on the impact of the show,” she said. “I mean, so many people spent the majority of their year pouring into this universe, so something like this is just such a wonderful way to roll into our final season.”

Yara really seems like she has her head screwed on right. The fact that she is making sure to complete her education while keeping her foot in Hollywood is just smart. Yara is just making sure that she has a back up plan to her acting and film career. Yara is also very clear about her boundaries. Requesting to present early took confidence and I am proud that she is putting her education first. I also must comment on how beautiful Yara looked at the Emmys. She was giving 1950′s Dior glam and I was here for the green. I am not sure how Yara is going to school while still working AND showing up to these award shows. As an introvert I’d be tired by now and mad at everyone. I am excited to see where Yara takes her career. I hope Yara will continues to produce and direct. She has an amazing mind and will be able to create some great shows. In the meantime, I hope Yara continues to be in the moment and enjoying these opportunities.

Yara Shahidi in emerald Dior at the Emmys: stunning & perfect?

Yara Shahidi had probably my favorite look at the Emmys. She really kills it when she’s on a red carpet, and she plays around with her look a lot. For the Emmys, Yara went super-classic in this emerald-green Dior. I thought at first (on the carpet) that this was a full-length gown, which I would have loved. But no – it’s tea length, which makes it more of an Audrey Hepburn-esque look. She paired the classic dress with Cartier jewels. Perfect. I have zero complaints.

Rita Wilson wore a sparkly Tom Ford suit. From the waist up, everything is good. I dislike the cut on the pants though.

Sophia Bush in Markarian. I feel like there were several versions of the “pink princess dress” on the Emmys carpet. While I kind of think this Markarian gown is boring, it was also one of the better versions of the pink princess dress. It would have been so much better in a different color!

Yara Shahidi in Dior at the Met Gala: one of the best looks?

Yara Shahidi was one my favorite looks last night, in this Dior crystal-embroidered gown with a gold tulle cloak and hood. This is so strikingly pretty with some lovely touches. The gloves and the billowing cape make it look romantic and like a fairy tale. I love the delicate diamonds at her head and how her gloves are a slightly different shade from her dress. Her styling is gorgeous too. This whole look is a dream. Yara said that her dress was inspired by Josephine Baker.

Rachel Zegler was also in Dior, she’s going to be in West Side Story. She said this dress was inspired by a tarot card. The design looks incredible I just wish I could see more of it.

Mary J. Blige was in Dundas, in a striking deep v-neck lace up sequin gown.

Spanish singer Rosalia had on Rick Owens. Her train was so long that she definitely got noticed on the red carpet. I loved the drama of this and she was really sweet in her interview with Keke Palmer. Her boots are ridiculous and awesome.
