Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees include Cher, Kool & The Gang and Mary J. Blige

Remember when Cher loudly declared on television that she wouldn’t join the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame now “if they gave me a million dollars,” and then two months later the Rock & Rock Hall of Fame announced her as a nominee? Well… guess who’s officially been named as an inductee!! And she’s in good company (whether she accepts or not); joining Cher in the Performer Category are Kool & The Gang, Mary J. Blige, Dave Matthews Band, Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Ozzy Osbourne, and A Tribe Called Quest. Entertainment Weekly is calling this “music’s highest honor,” so naturally it was announced by Ryan Seacrest and Lionel Richie on American Idol this weekend:

Drum roll, please! This year’s inductees into music’s highest honor — the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame — are officially announced.

During Sunday’s “Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Night” episode of American Idol, host Ryan Seacrest and judge Lionel Richie revealed that Mary J. Blige, Cher, Dave Matthews Band, Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Kool & The Gang, Ozzy Osbourne, and A Tribe Called Quest are being inducted under the Performer Category, which honors “artists who have created music whose originality, impact, and influence has changed the course of rock & roll,” according to a release.

To be eligible for the Hall of Fame, an individual artist or band must have released its first commercial recording at least 25 years prior to the year of nomination. Four out of the eight inductees in the Performer category were on the ballot for the first time, including Cher, Foreigner, Kool & the Gang, and Frampton.

Cher’s induction comes after she publicly rebuked the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last year for never nominating her. “I wouldn’t be in it now if they gave me a million dollars,” she said on The Kelly Clarkson Show in December. “I’m never gonna change my mind,” she declared. “I mean, they can just you-know-what themselves.”

The Rock Hall is also honoring the late Jimmy Buffett, MC5, Dionne Warwick, and Norman Whitfield with the Musical Excellence Award, which is given to “artists, musicians, songwriters and producers whose originality and influence creating music have had a dramatic impact on music.”

Alexis Korner, John Mayall, and Big Mama Thornton earned the Musical Influence Award, which goes to “artists whose music and performance style have directly influenced, inspired, and evolved rock & roll and music impacting youth culture.”

And Suzanne de Passe is being honored with the Ahmet Ertegun Award, which goes to a “non-performing industry professional who’s had a major influence on the growth of the art form.”

Others who were nominated this year but not selected for induction include Mariah Carey, Eric B. & Rakim, Jane’s Addiction, Lenny Kravitz, Oasis, Sinead O’Connor, and Sade.

The 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction will air live on Saturday, October 19, on Disney , with a special airing on ABC at a later date and available on Hulu the next day.

[From Entertainment Weekly]

As of this writing, Cher has not made a public statement in response to the news. And I hope she keeps it that way! Keep ‘em on their toes!! The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame only thinks they’re the ones inviting Cher, when really it’s Cher who makes the rules, and who decides whether or not to call you back. And speaking of rules, I know I’m not the first to say this, but the whole Hall of Fame structure is so needlessly convoluted. With an awards show, I understand announcing a group of nominees, then revealing the winner in each category. But this deal of naming nominees to enter a club, and then cutting out some of that group… Why not just announce and induct the same set of artists at once?? What possible value was there in making the late great Sinead O’Connor a nominee and then not letting her in two months later? Anyway, congratulations to all the inductees — if it means something to you. Something like the more than a million dollars Cher said she couldn’t be bribed with.

Mary J. Blige performed ‘Good Morning Gorgeous’ and looked gorgeous at the Grammys

I’m watching the rest of the Grammy Awards this morning because my old ass can’t stay up past 9pm without being grumpy. I assumed that Mary J. Blige would be part of the tribute to rap, similar to how she performed at the Super Bowl with Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre and Kendrick Lamar. She’s R&B though and she performed her new song “Good Morning Gorgeous” in between Beyonce’s historical win and Dr. Dre being given the Global Impact Award (by LL Cool J., natch). I cried! Holy sh-t that performance was incredible. I’m so glad she’s getting her due now. She’s also on the cover of People Magazine’s last issue, and her interview is a study in self love, as is her new single.

On the red carpet Mary was in a sequin silver long sleeve gown by The Blonds with a gold belt and cutouts around the hip area. I liked her performance and ceremony gowns a little more.

Mary J. Blige has a whopping 9 Grammys. Beyonce holds the record now with this year’s win putting her at 33. Mary was nominated in five R&B categories last night but unfortunately did not win.

50 Cent Dr. Dre Eminem Kendrick Lamar Mary J Blige Snoop Dogg Super Bowl

Dr. Dre, Snoop, Kendrick, Mary J. Blige & Eminem did a great Halftime Show, right?

Embed from Getty Images

The sound quality was somewhat poor and the staging was somewhat blah, but the Super Bowl Halftime Show this year was one of the best ones I’ve ever seen? It felt so organic, like all of the artists knew each other, liked each other and coordinated well with each other. That’s rarely the case, as the NFL tends to throw wildly different artists together for the Halftime Show as some kind of stunt. For this year’s show, we got Dr. Dre and Snoop, Eminem, 50 Cent, Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lamar. Kendrick, Snoop and Dre are all from LA/Compton/Inglewood. 50 Cent and Eminem are close to Dre, who produced the show. And Mary… I think they just wanted Mary, and she killed it. She was one of the best parts, singing a medley of “Family Affair” and “No More Drama.” (The NFL is being tricky with the embed, so if you can’t see this video, go here to YouTube).

There was a lot of conversation on Twitter about how this was the most “Gen X” Halftime Show ever. I did have a moment where I was like… wow, Mary is singing stuff from a 2001 album. Eminem did “Lose Yourself,” the Oscar-winning song from the 2002 film 8 Mile. Snoop is 50 years old! So yeah… it was pretty Gen X! Kendrick kind of evened it out a bit – he’s a Millennial, but Gen Xers love him, so IDK.

You know who didn’t love this Halftime Show? Red states and Republicans! The amount of complaining because the Halftime show was full of “rappers” and (gasp) Black folks was really something. There were conservative commentators full-on weeping that Eminem was the only white artist (and Em was arguably the most openly liberal artist on the show). Not only that, the NFL tried to tell all of these Halftime artists that they could not make any reference to Colin Kaepernick or social justice or kneeling, and then EMINEM was the one who kneeled on stage.

That halftime show was so Black red states will have legislation to ban it by tomorrow morning.

Mary J. Blige: ‘If you’ve been beat down mentally, you’re never pretty enough’

Mary J Blige has gone through some things these last few years. In 2018, Mary finalized her divorce to husband and manager Kendu Isaacs under much drama and mud slinging (from his corner). However, there were a few silver linings. In 2017, Mary starred in Mudbound for which she was nominated for two Oscars (Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Song). It was during her portrayal of Florence Jackson in Mudbound that Mary said that she finally saw herself as beautiful. Now, Mary is starring in Starz’s Power Book II: Ghost, and is set to perform with Eminem, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dog, and Kendrick Lamar for Super Bowl LVI’s half time show. Mary’s new album, Good Morning Gorgeous will also be dropping on February 11. Mary is covering Elle’s February issue. In her profile, Mary discussed her “ghetto fabulous” persona that she took on before her career took off, finding self-love after being mentally beat down for years, and her daily morning affirmations. A few highlights from Elle:

On regaining her self worth

“If you’ve been beat down mentally by someone, you’re never pretty enough. You’re never smart enough. Nothing’s ever good enough,”

“When I shot Mudbound, I was at my point of no real confidence,” she admits. Compliments from everyone on set helped build her self-image and forced her to readdress herself correctly. Every morning she would tell herself, “ ‘This chick is beautiful,’ ” she says. “So I started to believe it and started to pay myself high compliments to get past that feeling and that fear.” It was Florence who made Blige realize wigs, weaves, and makeup were just secondaries, and gave her the confidence to embrace the natural side of the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul.

“During Mudbound and when I was married, I was feeling so low. I had to pay myself the highest compliments, even if I didn’t believe it, just so I could build myself up,” Blige says. “I would do it in the morning, because that’s the time when your hair is not done and you don’t have on makeup. You’re just kind of dealing with yourself for real.” She still wakes up and recites the same words: “Good morning, Gorgeous. I love you. I got you. I need you.”

On her early style

“Ghetto fabulous is just, when you come from the hood, you at your flyest. What can you afford? What can you do with it? You want stones on your nails. You want mad colors on your nails. You want colorful furs. You want Timberland boots to rock with your furs. You want a hockey jersey? It’s whatever you feel you can do with whatever you can afford,” Blige explains. “Growing up around drug dealers and the women that I hung out with, they wore furs—long sables and silver foxes and red lipstick. They were just fly. Men wore them, but when you saw a woman show up in one, you knew who she was.”

[From Elle via Yahoo]

It would be remiss of me to not comment on how beautiful Mary looks in these images for Elle. I know that Mary turned 51 earlier this month and the woman is still serving lewks honey. I have always loved Mary’s ability to make ghetto fabulous well fabulous. And I have often wanted to dress like her despite my style being more Hamptons meets rocker chick than fabulous. I have been listening to Mary since her 411 album and I have seen her go through her ups and downs between her crazy AF relationship with K-Ci from Jodeci in the 90s to her chaotic marriage to Kendu Isaacs. I remember when Mary’s relationship with Kendu begin to unravel publicly. All I wanted to do was hug Mary and hope that she would find the love that she truly deserved. I was tired of seeing her settle for these dusty men.

I am happy to read that Mary has finally learned to love herself. I really love how she has addressed her self-esteem along with the mental abuse she endured. It would seem that Mary is in the “no more drama” phase of her life. As Beyonce would say, “the best revenge is your paper,” and Mary is proving this point. I truly enjoyed Mary in Mudbound. It was honestly the first time that I saw how beautiful a stripped down Mary J. was. Perhaps I was discovering the beauty of Mary at the same time that she was discovering it for herself. I am looking forward to Mary’s Super Bowl performance next month and I cannot wait to catch up on Power Book II: Ghost. In the meantime, I am going to take a trip down memory lane and go listen to my favorite Mary J. song, You’re All I Need with Method Man.

Yara Shahidi in Dior at the Met Gala: one of the best looks?

Yara Shahidi was one my favorite looks last night, in this Dior crystal-embroidered gown with a gold tulle cloak and hood. This is so strikingly pretty with some lovely touches. The gloves and the billowing cape make it look romantic and like a fairy tale. I love the delicate diamonds at her head and how her gloves are a slightly different shade from her dress. Her styling is gorgeous too. This whole look is a dream. Yara said that her dress was inspired by Josephine Baker.

Rachel Zegler was also in Dior, she’s going to be in West Side Story. She said this dress was inspired by a tarot card. The design looks incredible I just wish I could see more of it.

Spanish singer Rosalia had on Rick Owens. Her train was so long that she definitely got noticed on the red carpet. I loved the drama of this and she was really sweet in her interview with Keke Palmer. Her boots are ridiculous and awesome.

On why she quit drinking:

“I’m off it completely once more, and now I feel stronger than ever! Whitney Houston’s death really crushed me. I saw someone so incredibly talented just diminish, and I refuse to go out like that.”

On being fit at age 42:

‘I wanted to be fit forever. Unfortunately, as I got older, I found it was harder to maintain. As you age, your body really wants to hold on to extra weight.’

On her workouts:

‘The treadmill is fine, but running outdoors gives me the best results… I hate being out of shape! But I don’t exercise just to lose weight. It makes me feel better when I get that run in. I could be in the worst mood, but when I do my cardio I feel much, much better.’

On her diet:

‘I’m pretty diligent. I just can’t eat the way I used to. A typical breakfast usually consists of oatmeal or an egg-white omelet with spinach; lunch is salad with grilled chicken or chicken sausage and brown rice or potatoes; fish and steamed vegies is often on the menu for dinner, while the hitmaker also drinks ‘probably half a gallon’ of water every day.

… says Mary in Shape Magazine.
