Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees include Cher, Kool & The Gang and Mary J. Blige

Remember when Cher loudly declared on television that she wouldn’t join the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame now “if they gave me a million dollars,” and then two months later the Rock & Rock Hall of Fame announced her as a nominee? Well… guess who’s officially been named as an inductee!! And she’s in good company (whether she accepts or not); joining Cher in the Performer Category are Kool & The Gang, Mary J. Blige, Dave Matthews Band, Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Ozzy Osbourne, and A Tribe Called Quest. Entertainment Weekly is calling this “music’s highest honor,” so naturally it was announced by Ryan Seacrest and Lionel Richie on American Idol this weekend:

Drum roll, please! This year’s inductees into music’s highest honor — the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame — are officially announced.

During Sunday’s “Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Night” episode of American Idol, host Ryan Seacrest and judge Lionel Richie revealed that Mary J. Blige, Cher, Dave Matthews Band, Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Kool & The Gang, Ozzy Osbourne, and A Tribe Called Quest are being inducted under the Performer Category, which honors “artists who have created music whose originality, impact, and influence has changed the course of rock & roll,” according to a release.

To be eligible for the Hall of Fame, an individual artist or band must have released its first commercial recording at least 25 years prior to the year of nomination. Four out of the eight inductees in the Performer category were on the ballot for the first time, including Cher, Foreigner, Kool & the Gang, and Frampton.

Cher’s induction comes after she publicly rebuked the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last year for never nominating her. “I wouldn’t be in it now if they gave me a million dollars,” she said on The Kelly Clarkson Show in December. “I’m never gonna change my mind,” she declared. “I mean, they can just you-know-what themselves.”

The Rock Hall is also honoring the late Jimmy Buffett, MC5, Dionne Warwick, and Norman Whitfield with the Musical Excellence Award, which is given to “artists, musicians, songwriters and producers whose originality and influence creating music have had a dramatic impact on music.”

Alexis Korner, John Mayall, and Big Mama Thornton earned the Musical Influence Award, which goes to “artists whose music and performance style have directly influenced, inspired, and evolved rock & roll and music impacting youth culture.”

And Suzanne de Passe is being honored with the Ahmet Ertegun Award, which goes to a “non-performing industry professional who’s had a major influence on the growth of the art form.”

Others who were nominated this year but not selected for induction include Mariah Carey, Eric B. & Rakim, Jane’s Addiction, Lenny Kravitz, Oasis, Sinead O’Connor, and Sade.

The 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction will air live on Saturday, October 19, on Disney , with a special airing on ABC at a later date and available on Hulu the next day.

[From Entertainment Weekly]

As of this writing, Cher has not made a public statement in response to the news. And I hope she keeps it that way! Keep ‘em on their toes!! The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame only thinks they’re the ones inviting Cher, when really it’s Cher who makes the rules, and who decides whether or not to call you back. And speaking of rules, I know I’m not the first to say this, but the whole Hall of Fame structure is so needlessly convoluted. With an awards show, I understand announcing a group of nominees, then revealing the winner in each category. But this deal of naming nominees to enter a club, and then cutting out some of that group… Why not just announce and induct the same set of artists at once?? What possible value was there in making the late great Sinead O’Connor a nominee and then not letting her in two months later? Anyway, congratulations to all the inductees — if it means something to you. Something like the more than a million dollars Cher said she couldn’t be bribed with.

Ozzy Osbourne is leaving America: ‘I’m fed up with people getting killed every day’

Ozzy Osbourne is 73 years old and in pretty poor health. He has Parkinson’s, he’s still recovering from a neck injury (which required surgery) and he’s dealing with significant nerve damage and assorted other health ailments. Still, he keeps going. He’s got a new album coming out (Patient Number 9) where he collaborated with some American rockers. He also sang for the first time in years at the Commonwealth Games in August, because they were held in Birmingham and that’s where he grew up. Much of Ozzy’s new Observer interview is about his health issues, but he also made the announcement that he’s moving back to England full time after living in LA for decades. He explains why they’re moving back: because America is suddenly too crazy and violent (which is true).

He hadn’t performed for years before the Commonwealth Games: “Since I had my [first neck] surgery and everything got f–ked up, it’s been three or four years since I’ve performed. And I was thinking it’ll never happen again. But that show’s given me a bit of hope.”

His daughter is an anti-vaxxer: “My daughter’s the same, Aimee, my oldest.” Why is Aimee anti-vaxx? “Live in LA for a few years,” shrugs Ozzy, by way of answer.

He was fine with the pandemic lockdown: “When that happened I was like: ‘This is all right – I can’t f–king work anyway and now neither can anybody else. So I’ll just go along with it. And when it comes back to working again, I’ll be OK.’ Little did I f–king know.”

All of his medical dramas: “It got so bad that at one point I thought: ‘Oh God, please don’t let me wake up tomorrow morning.’ Because it was f–king agony.”

Why they’re moving back to England full-time, according to Sharon: “I knew people would think that [it’s about his health]. It’s not. It’s just time. America has changed so drastically. It isn’t the United States of America at all. Nothing’s united about it. It’s a very weird place to live right now.”

Ozzy on why they’re moving back: “Everything’s f–king ridiculous there. I’m fed up with people getting killed every day. God knows how many people have been shot in school shootings. And there was that mass shooting in Vegas at that concert… It’s f–king crazy. And I don’t want to die in America. I don’t want to be buried in f–king Forest Lawn. I’m English. I want to be back. But saying that, if my wife said we’ve got to go and live in Timbuktu, I’ll go. But, no, it’s just time for me to come home.”

[From The Guardian]

I find it suspicious that twenty months into the Biden administration, America is suddenly “f–king ridiculous” to Sharon and Ozzy. Like, they were living in LA during the f–king Trump years and I guess it was fine with them? Sharon is pretty f–king racist, so I guess so. But if they’re saying that America is violent and there are too many guns, too many racists and too many sociopaths with power, I would agree. Those are legitimate reasons to move out of the US. I also think Ozzy has probably wanted to go back to England for a while, and Sharon was the one who wanted to stay in LA and work. She was fired from The Talk last year and I get the feeling she’s burned a lot of bridges professionally in LA. So be it.

Ozzy Osbourne and Sharon’s ‘wild, insane’ love story is getting a biopic

avalon-0522058533

Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne are still together despite Ozzy cheating on Sharon as recently as 2016. Sharon has said that Ozzy has cheated with a total of six women over their nearly 40 year marriage, which seems low especially considering that it includes two women who were nannies to their children. More importantly Ozzy has been incredibly abusive to Sharon and, in the documentary about his life aired last year on A&E, described calmly deciding to kill her in 1989. Sharon pushed a panic button while Ozzy was choking her, summoning the police. She declined to press charges.

Jack and Aimee Osbourne’s production company, Osbourne Media, is now working on a biopic based on Sharon and Ozzy’s life, and in collaboration with their parents. Sharon issued a statement about it. I would imagine she has a lot of free time after she got kicked off The Talk for being a racist bitch.

The lives and epic love story of rocker Ozzy Osbourne and manager and personality Sharon Osbourne will be the subject of an upcoming feature film.

The untitled project comes from Polygram Entertainment, and will follow a biopic format centering on their decades-long bond — one that exploded to the heights of pop culture with the flagship MTV reality series “The Osbournes.” Oscar nominee Lee Hall (“Billy Elliot”) is scripting the project.

“Our relationship at times was often wild, insane and dangerous but it was our undying love that kept us together,” said Sharon Osbourne. “We’re thrilled to partner with Sony Pictures and Polygram to bring our story to the screen.”

Sharon and her kids Jack Osbourne and Aimée Osbourne are producing via their label Osbourne Media, with Michele Anthony and David Blackman on behalf of Polygram Entertainment. Andrea Giannetti is overseeing development for Sony.

Music will obviously play a large role in the film, and will feature tracks from Ozzy’s band Black Sabbath as well as work from his solo career.

Hall’s writing credits include “Rocketman” starring Taron Egerton, Steven Spielberg’s “War Horse,” Stephen Frears’ “Victoria & Abdul,” and “Billy Elliot,” which earned him an Oscar nod for best original screenplay.

[From Variety]

This makes me sad for a couple of reasons. One is that I don’t think these terrible people deserve a movie about their toxic relationship. Sharon continues to show us what kind of person she is and Ozzy is just as bad we just don’t focus on him as much. The other is that it’s being written by Lee Hall, who’s behind the incredibly moving and beautiful film Rocket Man. Elton John deserved that dreamy look into how he overcame his demons and became a legend; Sharon and Ozzy do not rate a movie on that level. (Also Rocket Man got shut out of the Oscars! Taron Edgerton needed a best actor nomination and it should have been nominated for best film, but I digress.) I hope this movie falls through somehow, but the Ozzy documentary was popular, there are big names involved, and there’s still interest in Sharon and Ozzy’s story.

Sharon Osbourne Is “Devastated” By Ozzy’s Relapse

Ozzy-and-Sharon-Osbourne

Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne have had a tough go of things lately and are living apart, which we recently found out is a result of Ozzy’s relapse back into drug and alcohol use. They’re not headed for a divorce or anything, but understandably, things have been pretty hard for them as a couple and for Sharon in particular, who discussed it on The Talk on Tuesday.

“Everybody knows he’s been struggling with this his entire life and I never knew that he was using prescription drugs,” she said. “I knew he was drinking occasionally, but I didn’t realize to what extend. It’s our business — we’re dealing with it. We’re not getting divorced. However, am I happy? No. Am I upset? Yes, I am — I’m devastated right now.”

“He’s been using alcohol and prescription drugs for the last year-and-a-half…and he has been in a very dark place. That’s true. It’s very true.””It’s a disease that not only hurts the person that has the disease but it hurts the family,” she continued. “It hurts people that love you and we’re dealing with it.”

Well, it’s a shame that stars are forced to make any kind of public announcement like this when it’s a very private issue – though I suppose the fact that Ozzy made his announcement about relapsing public kinda forced her hand. I can only hope he really does get back on the wagon and stay there, though we all know addiction is a life-long battle, no matter if you’re clean for 40 days or 40 years.

Sharon Osbourne Doesn’t Want A Divorce From Ozzy, Just Some Time Away

sharon ozzy osbourne

Sharon Osbourne has been through some shit with Ozzy over the years and their relationship drastically improved when he got clean. All that sort of went down the tubes when he started drinking and using drugs again over the past few years, leading to the couple living apart and sparking rumours that their marriage is over.

The good news, Sharon’s not filing for divorce and hopes to eventually reconcile with Ozzy. The bad news is that it’s not going to happen until he’s clean again for a long while.

From TMZ:

Sources connected to the couple tell us … even though Ozzy says he’s been sober for 44 days … it’s not enough for her. She’s been living with this most recent bout of drug and alcohol abuse for a year-and-a-half, and Sharon is saying 44 days doesn’t make that go away.

Ozzy has admitted … his boozing and drug use caused their split but he’s confident Sharon will NOT end their 31-year marriage by filing for divorce.

Our sources say … Sharon’s intention is not to end the marriage, but she believes she has to make it clear to Ozzy once and for all … she can’t handle his substance abuse.

Sources familiar with the situation say there will be NO divorce.  As one person put it, “They’ve been through hell and back together.  They’re not breaking up.”

Good for her. I could put up with a lot of shit but the thing with drugs is that they change the kind of person you are and make you capable of some serious fuckery. It’s probably really painful for Sharon to be away from him, but everyone’s got to draw the line somewhere. I do hope that Ozzy gets clean and stays that way, and not just for the sake of his marriage,  but I’m with Sharon on this one.

Sharon, Ozzy Osbourne Divorce Rumors As Couple Split

Sharon Ozzy Osbourne Divorce Rumors

Sharon Ozzy Osbourne divorce?

Are Sharon & Ozzy Osbourne heading for a divorce? TMZ is reporting that the longtime couple, married 31-years, have split. Sharon is supposedly shacking up at the Beverly Hills Hotel and Ozzy is staying at a rented home also in the area. No divorce papers have been filed as of yet.

Sharon met Ozzy way back when she was 18 and working for her father who managed Black Sabbath. They’ve endured Ozzy’s substance abuse problems, as well as their children’s, and just last year their son Jack was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.

With everything they’ve gone through it’s hard to believe something could tear them apart. I thought for sure they were in it for the long haul. Of course Sharon could just be PMSing and this could very well be over in about 5 days. We’ll keep you updated…

UPDATE:

In an interview with The Sun, Ozzy claims he and Sharon haven’t seen each other in three weeks. He added that Sharon’s thirst for the celebrity lifestyle and her constant rubbing of elbows has driven him away. “Sharon’s obsessed with that showbiz lifestyle. But it’s not for me. Leave me out of it. And Sharon’s always introducing me to people I don’t know or want to meet.”

Why God Why: Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne Are Living Apart

sharon ozzy osbourne

Ne’er was there a truer love than that which exists between Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne. Through drug addiction, Ozzy biting the head off that bird,, that awful but insanely watchable MTV reality show, Sharon’s plastic surgery and God knows what else, they’ve managed to make it work. Until now, that is, as The Sun reports that they’ve been living apart and may even be headed for divorce court soon. Nooooo!

Rocker Ozzy, 64, has moved into a rented mansion. Sharon, 60, is in a hotel while her new home is renovated two miles away in Beverly Hills.

They have not seen each other for three weeks.

A source said: “They are living at different addresses and are not spending any time together. They row a lot.

“They aren’t acting like husband and wife. It is unusual to not even have dinner together when both of them are five minutes apart.”

“Sharon and Ozzy have had plenty of opportunities to meet up but haven’t spent any time together at all.”

Damn. First of all, Ozzy’s only 64? That blows my mindgrapes – didn’t know drugs could add 15 years on. Second of all, they’re going to see each other even less if reports of Sharon returning to The X Factor UK judging panel is correct – and it most likely is. Third of all… well, I don’t have a third of all. It’s just a shame. I’m not sure why, it just is.
