Victoria Monet won Best New Artist in Versace at the Grammys: one of the best looks?

Last night’s Grammys were a lot! I appreciate the celebrities who showed up early, revealed their dress designers, and gave us plenty of photos on the red carpet. Victoria Monet was one of my early favorites in a formfitting brown Versace corset gown. She was there with her boyfriend, John Hayes, and their two-year-old daughter, Hazel. Her family is beautiful. I don’t keep up with music as much as I should but of course I know On My Mama, it’s a fabulous song and such a smooth twist on the original. Victoria won Best R&B Album for Jaguar II in the pre-ceremony. She also won Best New Artist during the live show! Also I’m a sucker for the Bulgari snake necklace, that never goes out of style.

Coco Jones was another early standout on the red carpet in a phenomenal Celia Kritharioti cornflower crystal gown with a deep v-neck. She won Best R&B performance for ICU. Coco stars on Bel-Air and she’s only 26. We’re going to see a lot more of her. Coco told Laverne Cox she was wearing Skims under her gown!

Gracie Abrams, nominated in the Best New Artist category, was in a black Chanel look with a tube top and tiered skirt. During her red carpet interview she said she didn’t want to take up space and Laverne told her never to worry about that. For real. Gracie looked pretty and it’s the Grammys, some nominees want to be comfortable. Maybe glam is not her thing.

Coi Leray was one of the fun early looks in a 2019 Yves Saint Laurent bodysuit look with a lime green muppet coat! She was having so much fun that it really showed. Coi was nominated for Best Rap Performance, for Players. That song is so much fun! Coi lost to Killer Mike in the pre-ceremony and she congratulated him during her red carpet interview. (Incidentally, there was so much drama with Killer Mike in the non-aired part of the Grammys. Embed from Getty Images

E! red carpet host Laverne Cox was in a red Comme des Garçons dress from her own archive. She said the theme was “blood and roses” and I like how she had an answer to her own “what story are you telling?” question on the red carpet. Laverne got so many compliments on this edgy dress and it was perfect for the Grammys.

Pregnant Suki Waterhouse wore a cutout red Valentino to the Emmys: bold or too much?

I have mixed feelings about Suki Waterhouse’s crazy cutout Valentino gown at the Emmys. On one hand it’s bonkers that she’s so pregnant and she wore that, on the other she’s a damn model/actress and she looks phenomenal. Why should she cover up for the Emmys just because she’s pregnant? I was floored when I first saw this gown on video (I tweeted about it) but when Suki talked to Laverne Cox I thought she looked adorable. She said that her gown had to be accommodated for her pregnancy, of course. Suki told ET that the dress had to be taken apart and put together several times and that she wasn’t sure it would be ready.

I like it, I don’t care! It’s making me smile so hard like “damn that’s daring!” Also it looks better on camera than it does in still photos. Suki is in Daisy Jones and The Six, which unfortunately didn’t take home any Emmys. I would have liked to have seen Robert Pattinson with her on the carpet.

Laverne Cox was in vintage Thierry Mugler from her own collection. Laverne loves asking people what they’re manifesting and there’s something poetic about her saving a dress for over twenty years and wearing it on the Emmys red carpet. She looks incredible and I love how well it fits her and the witchy vibes she’s giving. So many people complimented her makeup too. I appreciate Laverne but she seemed like she was phoning it in last night, like she’s got too much happening in her professional life and she’s tired. That’s relatable.

Nominee Keri Russell was in this black Alexander Vauthier that had a pencil skirt and a giant bubble cape. At first glance I don’t like it, but I see what they were going for. It doesn’t quite work, but it’s a cool concept.

I’m including nominee Sharon Horgan here because not enough people know her. I watched a couple of episodes of her show, Bad Sisters, on Apple. It was fun but it wasn’t enough to keep me watching! She’s a standout though. I don’t have an ID on Sharon’s dress but she said on the CW red carpet that it was heavy and vintage, and that she was having a wardrobe malfunction because her double sided tape wasn’t holding up and her boob was in danger of popping out! The CW hosts tried to hand her some tape and it didn’t seem like they were successful because she looked at it and said a deflated “gee thanks.”

Jenna Dewan in Self Portrait at the AMMP gala: needs pants?

Here’s Jenna Dewan at the Academy of Motion Pictures Museum Gala Saturday night. She’s in a Self Portrait outfit that looks like a jacket/bodysuit paired with floral print tights and platform shoes. This is really bad! Did she get talked into wearing this, or does she think it looks good? The Chanel perfume bottle purse is kind of cool. Does it open down the middle, like you screw off the top and then the sides open up? I’m really wondering about the logistics of that.

Cher was also wearing a bizarre look. She was in a Dolce & Gabbana suit with leopard print bell bottoms and a black and white jacket, corset and hat. I feel like Cher should trade Jenna her pants for Jenna’s purse. If anyone can go pantsless it’s Cher.

Sarah Paulson was in a sparkly kind of shapeless Armani gown that did nothing for her. Holland Taylor’s Armani suit is so much sharper. She definitely got the better look.

Laverne Cox was fit for the Oscars in this flowy pleated deep v-neck Johanna Johnson complete with a capelet. She looks so glam and gorgeous and I love her hair.

Adriana Lima was another one of my favorites in a gold metallic strapless Nicolas Jebran with a high leg slit. This looks like a dress for Cannes and I love her sleek styling.

Regina Hall in a seafoam green Edmond Alison with cutouts and fringe. I love her but this is ice skater fug!

Lily Rabe was in a dippy polka dot empire waist Carolina Herrera with a bunch of big bows on the neckline. She’s pregnant with her fourth child, they just made the announcement the day of this gala. Her partner is actor Hamish Linklater, they have a four-year-old daughter and a one and a half-year-old child together. Lily also has a 14-year-old daughter from a previous relationship.

Laverne Cox was about to quit acting before she got the job on OITNB

The world has been better since Laverne Cox made her debut on Orange is the New Black. It was recently announced that Laverne will be the host of E!’s Red Carpet. She’ll be taking over for Giuliana Rancic. In honor of Pride Month and in a conversation for the Paley Center’s Pride Month programing, Laverne recounted her struggles as an actress before landing her role on OITNB. Laverne said, at that time in 2012, she had just turned forty and was broke with her rent several months in arrears. Laverne was about to quit acting and go to graduate school when she got the call for the job of her dreams. She went on to say that she was tired of playing sex worker number six and that her role on OITNB was the role of a lifetime for a transgender woman. Below are a few more highlights via People:

“In the fall of 2012 we started shooting this show and I was just so happy to have a job; I was in rent arrears on my apartment, I had rolled back rent and I was in all kinds of debt and I was going to give up acting actually, a few months before I booked Orange,” Cox, 48, recalls when asked about her experience on OITNB. “I had turned 40 that year and had a breakout moment and I was in debt and things weren’t going the way I hoped they would.”

Instead of acting, she says, Cox was planning on heading back to graduate school.

“I was just devastated by turning 40 and my life was kind of in shambles, like, financially, and I had worked and trained a lot and my dream of being a working actress had not come to fruition,” she says. “I was just like, ‘I’ve got to do something else. Who do I think I am? I’m a Black trans woman — no one’s ever done this before, let me go and do something, have a real job or something.’”

Cox continues, “So I was going to go to grad school. I was studying for the GRE and then the audition for Orange happened and I didn’t go to grad school — Orange turned out to be my grad school.”

Her role on OITNB made Cox the first trans woman of color to have a leading role on a mainstream scripted series and the first openly trans actress to be nominated for a primetime acting Emmy.

“It changed everything,” she says. “I have a career now that I always dreamed about because of that show, and what’s really beautiful about Orange is, I had writing and storylines that I had dreamed about.”

“When you’re in acting school and you’re training, and you get, you know, five lines on Law & Order or you’re playing sex worker No. 6 on an HBO show — I played a sex worker seven different times — finally I had this storyline that was multidimensional with this character that was complicated and beautifully flawed and it was just exciting to be doing the work,” she adds.

I only watched one season of OITNB because the lead character really annoyed me but I absolutely loved Laverne and Uzo Aduba’s characters. It is the reason I still follow their careers to this day. I mean Crazy Eyes was the damn show. I can’t believe Laverne basically got her big break at forty. This is so inspiring and lets me know it is never too late. I am so glad Laverne didn’t give up because the world would not have been blessed with the awesomeness that she is. Laverne, along with Janet Mock, also elevated the conversation around transgender rights. When Laverne said she had to play a sex worker seven different times, it reminded me of the Black actresses from the 80s and 90s, like Halle Berry, lamenting having to cut their teeth on “drug addict number two” roles. It seems not much has changed for Black actresses, trans or not. Breaking into acting is a very daunting task, especially if you are a Black woman and even more so if you are a transgender Black woman. I am happy that Laverne and other actresses can smash through the barriers. Hopefully this is just the beginning and Laverne will get even more opportunities. Especially since there is a demand for representation within the LBGTQIA community, specifically the trans community.
