George Clooney and Brad Pitt Join Call for Academy to Reverse Its Oscar Decision

The revolt stems from the decision to present four Oscar categories during commercial breaks. A group of actors — as well as more directors, cinematographers and other filmmakers — have added their names to the open letter sent to the Film Academy and the producers of the Oscars. The letter urges the Academy to reverse its decision to present four categories during commercial breaks during the ABC broadcast of the 91st Academy Awards, which is now just 10 days away. Those who have joined the growing revolt include helmers Alfonso Cuaron, Christopher Nolan, Michael Mann, Alejandro G. Inarritu and Guillermo del Toro, as well as actors George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Robert De Niro, Elizabeth Banks, Peter Dinklage and Kerry Washington. The letter calls the Academy’s decision “nothing less than an insult to those of us who have devoted our lives and passions to our chosen profession. … The vocal response from our peers and the immediate backlash from industry leaders over the Academy’s decision makes it clear that it’s not too late to have this decision reversed.” In an email to the Academy membership on Monday, Academy president John Bailey, who belongs to the cinematographers branch, laid out the plan for this year’s show, including the presentation of four Oscar categories — cinematography, film editing, live-action shorts and makeup and hairstyling — during commercial breaks, with the winners’ speeches set to air later in the broadcast. The plan calls for there to be a rotation each year, meaning that at least four different categories would use this format in 2020 and that the four mentioned would be exempt. (This was first announced last year but without details and specific categories.) Bailey emphasized that the Academy is “still honoring the achievements of all 24 awards on the Oscars” while addressing pressure to shorten the broadcast (which a year ago ran 3 hours and 53 minutes). The Academy quickly responded to the open letter on Wednesday with its own letter to members, assuring them that “no award category at the 91st Oscars ceremony will be presented in a manner that depicts the achievements of its nominees and winners as less than any others.” The Academy also asserted that the branches of the affected categories had “volunteered” to go first this year. According to several sources, a video demonstration of what this new format will look like was shown to the various branches. It was generally described as “respectful” and included most of the presentation, minus the winner’s walk to the stage. The open letter urging a reversal of this decision was first released Wednesday and was backed by such filmmakers as Spike Lee, Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino. The letter with new names can be found here. The post George Clooney and Brad Pitt Join Call for Academy to Reverse Its Oscar Decision appeared first on Today's Evil Beet Gossip.

Disney Channel show has teen character tell his friends ‘I’m Gay’ in network first

The show ‘Andi Mack’ is a coming of age story on Disney Channel that often deals with subjects deemed taboo for the younger set. This past weekend was no different. On Friday Cyrus Goodman, played by actor Joshua Rush, became the first Disney Channel character to utter the words; ‘I’m gay’ in an episode. The decision to include a gay story arc earlier in season two is also a first for the network. ‘Every day is a blessing working on this show,’ Rush tweeted along with the clip of the scene. ‘This milestone is just another stitch in a rich and vibrant tapestry that is Cyrus Goodman. ‘ On Friday’s episode, titled One in a Minyan, the show’s lead characters were seen attending the shiva of Goodman’s grandmother, Bubbe Rose. While walking around a buffet and naming a few of the dishes, Goodman turned to Jonah Beck and uttered the words: ‘I’m Gay,’ without hesitation. After a couple of seconds of silence, Beck offered up a smile and replied, ‘Yeah? Cool.’ From there, the scene just rolled on, seamlessly, in order to make the revelation seem as normal as any other conversation between friends. Ok… Maybe no NO reaction: Sofia Wylie (plays Buffy) and Peyton Lee (plays Andi Mack) The post Disney Channel show has teen character tell his friends ‘I’m Gay’ in network first appeared first on Today's Evil Beet Gossip.

Justin Theroux sends bday message to Jen and it seems sad

By ALL accounts…. and I mean ALL… Justin Theroux is the sweetest man and a genuine friend. So it made me sad to see his well wishing to ex Jen Aniston on her 50th birthday. Hear me out. His message is respectful and kind and totally appropriate. Positive. But then he ends with “<3 you B”. B? I feel certain (who am I? Take my assumption as just that), but I am 100% certain that “B” is an abbreviated pet name. Even if it was just short for “Bae” or something basic like that. It’s his name for her and that feels awfully personal and makes me feel as if Justin is sending her a message that he still loves her. Brad at her party must have really put him in a spin. View this post on Instagram Happy Birthday to this fierce Woman. Fiercely loving. Fiercely kind. ….and fiercely funny. ?? you B. Ronan Farrow says National Enquirer tried to blackmail him

(Photo by Bryan Bedder/Getty Images for GQ) This week Jeff Bezos announced the National Enquirer was attempting to blackmail him with nude selfie they had in their possession. Now Ronan Farrow says the tabloid also attempted to blackmail him. “I and at least one other prominent journalist involved in breaking stories about the National Enquirer’s arrangement with Trump fielded similar ‘stop digging or we’ll ruin you’ blackmail efforts from AMI,” Farrow tweeted Thursday evening. “(I did not engage as I don’t cut deals with subjects of ongoing reporting.)” Earlier Thursday, the Amazon CEO alleged that American Media Inc. — the Enquirer’s parent company — threatened to publish a nude photo of him if he didn’t stop investigating the magazine’s exposure of his affair and publicly declare that its reporting hadn’t been “politically motivated.” AMI — which is run by David Pecker, a longtime pal of President Trump — has admitted to buying the rights to potentially embarrassing stories about the commander-in-chief in an effort to keep them from seeing the light of day. In an April 2018 piece for The New Yorker, Farrow detailed the relationship between Pecker and Trump and said the magazine bought and buried stories to help his 2016 presidential campaign. Bitcoin holder dies with password to account holding $190m

Canadian crypto exchange QuadrigaCX says it cannot repay most of $190 million in client holdings after its 30-year-old founder Gerald Cotten, the only person who knew the passwords to its “cold storage,” unexpectedly died in India in December 2018, Coindesk reported on Friday. In a sworn affidavit with the Nova Scotia Supreme Court, widow Jennifer Robertson said that QuadrigaCX owes its customers some $190 million in both cryptocurrency and fiat money. QuadrigaCX has filed for creditor protection because it says it cannot access the funds stored in “cold storage,” just the comparatively smaller amount in a “hot wallet” used for transfers. Cotten, 30, died in India last December from complications from Crohn’s disease, according to the company. He was in India “opening an orphanage to provide a home and safe refuge for children in need”. Sounds like we lost a real asset to the world, let alone investors. The post Bitcoin holder dies with password to account holding $190m appeared first on Today's Evil Beet Gossip.
