Cannes: Halle Berry wore a tragic & puffy Celia Kritharioti mullet dress

Here are more photos from Cannes Day 2. So far, I haven’t been too impressed with the glamour or fashion, which adds to my theory that Cannes is in its Bummer Era these days. It doesn’t help that many women probably have to wear their backup dresses, because Cannes organizers announced (on the eve of the festival) that there is a new ban on big, voluminous dresses and sheer/body-exposing fashion. Halle Berry even said that she had to change plans for her look on opening night. Well, I don’t know if she also had to change her planned outfit for Day 2, but holy sh-t. She wore this Celia Kritharioti Couture which is… AWFUL! I’ve seen a lot of commentary about Halle’s wacky style these days, but what’s crazy is… she still has that incredible figure, she’s still an extremely beautiful woman who looks much younger than 58. But she’s lost her style mojo and now she wanders around red carpets in sh-t like this.

Eva Longoria in Elie Saab. I love this? Beautiful color, glamorous, well-styled. I could nitpick the tailoring, but overall, one of the better looks I’ve seen at Cannes.

Irina Shayk in vintage Yves Saint Laurent – while this is somewhat better than her previous Cannes looks, it’s still not great? Her styling is still tragic – my hair looks like this ten minutes after washing it. Irina looks so tired!

Zoe Saldaña, the reigning Best Support Actress Oscar winner, turned up with her husband. Zoe wore Saint Laurent – an incredibly basic black dress, jazzed up with a black leather jacket worn off the shoulder. Blah – but I wasn’t impressed with her style during the awards season either.

Heidi Klum in Elie Saab. Nope. Unflattering! It doesn’t fit her.

Cannes: Bella Hadid wore Saint Laurent & 118.68-carat Chopard emeralds

Here are some photos from the Cannes Film Festival’s Opening night. They let Quentin Tarantino get on stage and officially open proceedings, and Leo DiCaprio is already in town too, which means Cannes really is “open.” Bella Hadid was my pick for standout of the first red carpet. Bella always goes to Cannes – she has contracts with some of the sponsors, and I’m pretty sure she’s paid to attend events and “pretty up” the festival. Bella wore a custom Saint Laurent dress which is kind of blah (to me). I think it was meant as a sort of blank slate so the focus would be on Bella’s jewelry – she wore a gorgeous pair of Chopard earrings. Apparently, we’re looking at 118.68-carat emeralds. Bonkers. Her makeup is SOOO good in these pics. Her new caramel-colored hair really suits her.

We’ll probably have lots of mentions about the new Cannes dress code and how it’s enforced, but Halle Berry got the memo too late – she’s on the Cannes jury, so she’s been organizing her Cannes looks for a while. She told reporters that she had to set aside her planned Gaurav Gupta look for the opening ceremony because the dress was too big. That’s one of the new rules – no “excessively voluminous” dresses. So Halle wore this black-and-white Jacquemus which would look like a circus tent on most women, but Halle is pulling it off.

Someone who never pulls off any look at Cannes? Irina Shayk. It’s insane – Irina is beautiful and, like Bella, she gets paid to show up and pretty up these events. But year after year, they put her in terrible, ill-fitting gowns and then they style her to look completely unhinged. Her gown here is Armani Privé and it’s fine-ish. But her hair!! My god.

Eva Longoria wore Tamara Ralph Haute Couture – it doesn’t fit her correctly?

Some women decided to go big, even with the ban on voluminous gowns. Heidi Klum wore a big, stupid, pink Elie Saab gown which should have been banned! But I love QianHui Wan’s Wang Feng Couture gown. So whimsical & cute!

Post-election, Eva Longoria is happy she lives in Spain & Mexico: ‘I get to escape’

Eva Longoria covers the latest issue of Marie Claire, in what was supposed to be a standard promotional piece for Eva’s many projects. Quietly, Eva has become one of the biggest bosses in Hollywood and politics – investor, producer, director, actress, Democratic Party activist and donor, and people only recently learned that she gave the financing to make the first John Wick movie happen. She’s promoting Siete Foods (a billion-dollar food company she invested in, which was just sold), and CNN’s Searching for Spain, which she hosts. The interview is in two halves – one, pre-election, where she’s talking about aging and wellness and business. The second half is post-election, where Eva is talking about politics and the fact that America f–king sucks for “electing” Donald Trump again. Some highlights:

Turning 50: “I’m cold-plunging; I’ve got red lights on; I strength train with weights; I meditate; I’m journaling. I wake up with the sun; I’m doing the grounding; I have an Oura ring to track deep sleep; I’m taking magnesium and other supplements; I’m doing everything. Not because I don’t want to age but because I do want to age. For me, age is just a number, but I’m excited. I refuse to believe my greatest success is behind me.”

Why she was motivated to host CNN’s ‘Searching for Mexico’: “I feel like the strained relationship between us and Mexico needs to be repaired, and I think culture and food can easily celebrate the best things of a country. The people who were screaming, ‘Build that wall!’ are the same people that are going to Taco Tuesday. And I’m like, ‘No, no, no. You don’t get to margarita out and sh-t on the culture that gave you the taco and gave you the margarita. You have to go, ‘This came from there. There must be good things.’”

How she felt after the 2016 election. “I’ve never been depressed in my life,” she recalls. In addition to actual, bodily anguish, she felt serious doubt about convictions that had once felt undeniable. “It was like, ‘Does my vote really matter? Am I really making a difference?’ I was so untethered to the core of what I believe because I truly believed in my soul that the best person wins. And then that happened, and I was like, ‘Oh, wait. The best person doesn’t win.’”

How she feels after the 2024 election: “The shocking part is not that he won. It’s that a convicted criminal who spews so much hate could hold the highest office. I would like to think our fight continues,” she says. But she can’t pretend she knows what’s coming next. The country “is a scary place. If he keeps his promises, it’s going to be a scary place.”

She and her husband José Bastón split their time between Spain and Mexico. Work takes them from Europe to South America and back. The movie and television business is in flux, but the globalization of it at least suits her. Longoria doesn’t tend to shoot in Los Angeles, and she doesn’t miss it. “I had my whole adult life here. But even before [the pandemic], it was changing. The vibe was different. And then Covid happened, and it pushed it over the edge. Whether it’s the homelessness or the taxes, not that I want to sh-t on California—it just feels like this chapter in my life is done now. I’m privileged. I get to escape and go somewhere. Most Americans aren’t so lucky. They’re going to be stuck in this dystopian country, and my anxiety and sadness is for them.”

She had told Democrats to pay attention to the Latino vote. “We’ve been screaming from the highest rooftop that the Latino vote is not something to take for granted. You have to earn it and win it every election cycle.” She is already strategizing how candidates in future elections might reverse the trend. “I want to know how we can communicate that government and politics affects your life, whether you like it or not. Either you participate in that or you let somebody else hold the power.”

[From Marie Claire]

The more postmortems I read about the election and the more I see about why people voted for Orangina again, the less I believe it was a messaging problem for the Democrats. I said that hours after Kamala Harris lost Pennsylvania – this is not a candidate problem or a party problem. This is an electorate problem. Unless voters choose to vote in their best interests and the best interests of the country, Dems can’t “message” their way out of it. Tens of millions of Americans knew exactly what was at stake, and they still chose the fascist. As for what she says about being able to escape to Spain or Mexico… lucky lady. The crybaby fascists are trying to make it sound like Eva is storming out of the country because Trump won, but she clearly says that she’s been living in Spain and Mexico for several years already, and that she moved out of California years ago. I also agree with her that this election felt different than 2016.

Eva Longoria: ‘I am really good at prioritizing and I’m very efficient’

Eva Longoria has a new interview with Yahoo! Life talking about her life at home with son Santi, four, and her husband of seven years, Jose Baston. They all make breakfast together in the mornings, Santi helps, and Eva has charts for him so he knows what’s expected and what parts of his day he can control. After that Eva goes about her very efficient day. She’s a bit self congratulatory about how much she gets accomplished while carving out time to spend with her family. At first I found that haughty, but it sounds like it’s her life’s philosophy so I get that. Eva is all about productivity and making sure you’re not wasting time. She’s helping address childhood hunger through her partnership with Kellogg’s and she has a bunch of projects she’s working on, including her podcast, the Flamin’ Hot movie and a CNN series. Here’s more from that interview:

“My husband calls me a sergeant sometimes,” she says. “We have little pictures and little charts for [Santiago] and he gets a sticker when he completes things and if you go out of order, he’ll correct you. He’s like ‘no it’s brushing teeth and then books’ and you’re like ‘yup, yup, you’re right.’”

She considers herself a strict mom, but allows her son to feel in control with freedom to make some choices and express himself. Brushing teeth is a must, but what toothbrush he uses is up to him. Eating vegetables is a non-negotiable, but he gets to decide if it’s broccoli, cauliflower or spinach.

“Allowing him to pick his clothes in the morning, go for it. I don’t care if it matches. I don’t care if socks stick out. I don’t care if you want to wear two different shoes,” Longoria says. “I think that’s important. They have autonomy and they feel like they’re in control of their lives and they are making decisions for themselves and it makes them feel empowered.”

The routines and a supportive team help Longoria balance all the plates she’s juggling…

“I am really good at prioritizing and I’m very efficient,” Longoria says while conducting a Zoom interview and doing a required daily COVID test for work purposes. “I’m not on Instagram hours a day. Who has time to be on Instagram hours a day? If I’m in traffic I do all my calls in the car because when I get home I want to be with Santi. I don’t want to be on the phone. I don’t want to be on the computer. People are always amazed at how much I can get done in a day. Time is my greatest wealth. I’m either spending my time, wasting my time or investing my time, so I try to invest my time.”

[From Yahoo!]

I really like that last quote above, that time is wealth and you have to use it wisely like money. I get a lot done in a day but I definitely struggle with this. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled an addictive match 3 game on my phone. I know it’s a waste of time but it’s hard to put down. Eva is proud of managing her time precisely and of not wasting time on Instagram scrolling mindlessly. I suspect a lot of very successful people are like this but don’t reveal the effort they put in to managing their lives. Also, I’ve listened to Eva’s podcast and it’s so well edited and produced. Whatever she’s doing, it’s working.

Eric Braeden, aka Victor Newman, trashes Eva Longoria & defends soap actors

A soap opera star is coming for Eva Longoria!!! I’m enjoying this controversy too much. So, in her early days as a young actress, Eva Longoria had a part on The Young and the Restless. She left the soap opera after a short stint and moved on to Desperate Housewives, which (in my opinion) was just another soap opera, just in primetime. Longoria was interviewed this weekend by Chris Wallace, and he brought up her soap opera past:

If… this is what made him so angry… I… #YR #EvaLongoria #ChrisWallace pic.twitter.com/wIblHvhRlS

— Johnathon (@soapwikijohn) March 20, 2023

She describes how she held down two jobs at once because Y&R didn’t pay enough, so she kept her job at a temp agency. “So I continued being a headhunter and Young & the Restless. And I would hide the fact that I was on Young & the Restless from my clients because they didn’t want, like, a dumb actress handling their accounts.” She also says that she told her publicist not to tell anyone she was on Y&R.

Well, y’all know Eric Braeden, aka Victor Newman on Y&R? He’s arguably one of the most famous soap opera actors in the country and everyone’s mom and grandma has a thing for Victor Newman. Well, Braeden saw Eva Longoria’s interview and he has a message for her, tweeting this:

EVA LONGORIA: you just made derogatory remarks about daytime actors! You simply weren’t good enough to survive the pressures of this medium! You were very lucky to get on that “housewife” show! You did one show in 8-12 days, with mediocre but salacious dialogue! Our actresses would run rings around you!! And they did then!! From Robert di Nero to whoever they all are, many of them started in the medium you denigrate! It shows a complete lack of class!!

[From Eric Braeden’s Twitter]

I mean… he’s right but I also think Longoria was trying to say that she didn’t want her soap opera gig messing with her real moneymaker, her other job as a headhunter. It’s just sort of funny that Victor Mature was like “honey, you just couldn’t handle being a soap actress!” He’s replying to people on this thread too, he’s really mad.

Would run rings around you!! And they did then!! From Robert di Nero to whoever they all are, many of them started in the medium you denigrate! It shows a complete lack of class!!

Andrea Riseborough eva longoria Julia Louis-Dreyfus Nicole Kidman Oscars Rooney Mara

Nicole Kidman wore Armani to the 2023 Oscars: surprisingly great?

Nicole Kidman only attended the Oscars as a presenter – she wasn’t in any of the nominated films or anything. I enjoy “presenter Nicole” – she comes out to have fun, and if you told me she took an edible or had a few shots before the Oscars carpet, I would believe you. Nicole wore Armani – this dress grew on me throughout the night and I ended up really liking it.

Rooney Mara in Alexander McQueen. What an awful dress in general, and specifically on Rooney. This is one of my picks for worst dress. I’m so tired of her washed-out BS.

Andrea Riseborough in Alexander McQueen. Well, she was certainly part of the bridal trend!

Julia Louis-Dreyfus in Lanvin. I haaaated this too. Julia is a lovely, petite woman – it shouldn’t be this hard to find something flattering?

Eva Longoria in Zuhair Murad. Eva has this thing where she always looks exactly the same no matter what she’s wearing or how she’s styled. While this is a different silhouette than she usually prefers, it looks… the same as everything else she wears.

Jennifer Connelly looked severe in Louis Vuitton at the Cannes ‘Top Gun’ premiere

In the South of France on Wednesday, the stars of Top Gun: Maverick descended upon the Croisette for a big, splashy, not-in-competition premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. The premiere got an excellent turnout – so many of the biggest names come out for the first four or five days of Cannes, then the red carpets get a bit weaker. Tom Cruise was clearly in his element. He’s promoted films at Cannes before, but it’s been years (decades, really) since he’s done this kind of big Cannes premiere. The festival was super-happy to have him there too – the festival gave him a special surprise: an honorary Palme d’Or, their top prize. The audience gave him a five-minute standing ovation. I know, I know, but I believe it was probably all about his career, not his cult.

Jennifer Connelly and the rest of the Top Gun cast was there, and they walked the carpet en masse. It was kind of cool. Connelly wore Louis Vuitton. I honestly don’t hate the dress, but I don’t care for her styling. She and Rooney Mara are both obsessed with that severe, scraped-back hairstyle and minimal makeup with ghostly pale skin. What I wouldn’t give to see Rooney or J-Con do bouncy, fluffy hair on a carpet.

Some other notable ladies at the Top Gun premiere – here’s Elle Fanning in a pale, bespoke Armani. This is stunning on her, and I’m usually not a fan of this kind of thing. She’s so beautiful and such a fashion girl.

Adriana Lima is pregnant (which I forgot) and she wants us to see her bump. That’s why she wore this Balmain. It’s fine, good for her.

Eva Longoria wore Cristina Ottaviano. Did she get a new stylist or something? She’s looked a lot sleeker so far. It really works!

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan wore Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda. A mess, Aishwarya!!! I love this lady but this is a whole g–damn mess. She looks like she’s smuggling a flower shop into the premiere.
