Amal Alamuddin George Clooney Tony Awards

George Clooney got shut out of the Tony Awards & Amal wore Tamara Ralph

In retrospect, it’s really funny how Amal Clooney completely avoided being photographed with her husband in the months where he had a terrible dye job. George Clooney dyed his hair black to play Edward R. Murrow in the stage adaptation of Good Night and Good Luck, and he spent months wandering around New York looking like Lurch. Amal avoided his Lurch Era, but she’s come back now that the show is over and his hair is almost back to its normal grey. These are photos of the Clooneys last night at the Tony Awards. He told People Mag that Amal was “the happiest person” when he went back to grey. All of the dyed hair isn’t gone though, and now he really looks like he’s wearing a bad rug.

The Clooneys attended the Tony Awards because George was nominated for Best Actor and GNAGL was nominated in the Best Play category. Somewhat hilariously, the Tonys completely shut out GNAGL. Good. George has lost the plot, and during his turn on Broadway, he was an active participant in Jake Tapper’s anti-Biden bullsh-t. CNN was shilling hard for Clooney as well, airing GNAGL and pretending like it was some bold decision to do so. George deserves a lot worse than being shut out of the Tonys, but I’ll take this.

As for Amal, her dress is Tamara Ralph. Amal showcased the dress terribly, slouching over, shoulders slumped, twisting herself in knots to not tower over George. The dress itself is okayish, I guess – the pearl detailing is lovely, but the look is very bridal. I feel like the length of the dress was a weird choice too.

Cynthia Erivo Fashion Katie Holmes Keanu Reeves Michelle Williams nicole scherzinger Sarah Paulson Tony Awards

Katie Holmes wore Prada at the Tony Awards: one of the worst looks of the night?

This is nowhere near a comprehensive fashion list for last night’s Tony Awards, I’m just trying to highlight some of the best or worst fashion moments from people I recognized! I covered George Clooney’s appearance separately – go here to see. Katie Holmes went to the Tonys in this two-piece Prada ensemble. In my opinion, the house of Prada has issues and this is a glaring example of those issues. They have color issues – they put funky colors together and when they do bicolor or tricolor looks, it’s always jarring. The top part of this is also just… awful, it’s like a wrinkled sack.

Nicole Scherzinger surprised everyone by winning her first Tony Award for Sunset Boulevard, beating out Audra McDonald in Gypsy. It was also a surprise because Nicole’s time on Broadway has been marred by some off-Broadway gossip, like her coziness with MAGA. She wore a custom Rodarte, which looked lovely (albeit slightly dated).

Cynthia Erivo was the Tonys host, and she had a lot of outfit changes. She wore this Schiaparelli look for the red carpet. Eh.

Sarah Snook won her first Tony! Her gown was Richard Quinn.

Michelle Williams wore Bibhu Mohapatra – I LOVE the skirt. I feel like the top could have been different?

Sarah Paulson wore Schiaparelli as well – this is so “1950s.”

Bonus Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter. Keanu practically got a lapdance from Jonathan Groff!

Denzel Washington Jake Gyllenhaal Kieran Culkin Tony Awards

Denzel Washington, Jake Gyllenhaal & Kieran Culkin were snubbed for Tony noms

The Tony Award nominations came out on Tuesday. We usually don’t cover the Tony noms, but in years past, the Tonys usually nominated all of the biggest names on Broadway. That didn’t happen this year – there are currently so many movie stars doing plays right now, and the Tonys snubbed so many of them. Notably: Denzel Washington, Jake Gyllenhaal and this year’s Best Supporting Actor Oscar-winner Kieran Culkin. How does the greatest living American actor get snubbed for an Oscar nomination AND a Tony nomination in the same year? Bonkers.

Othello, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Denzel Washington, was entirely shut out of the 2025 Tony Award nominations. While the play received mostly mixed reviews, it has been drawing crowds on Broadway and has frequently had the most expensive average ticket price in the industry, at $374.17 last week.

The new musical Redwood, starring Idina Menzel, was also entirely shut out of the Tony nominations, as was the musical The Last Five Years, starring Nick Jonas and Adrienne Warren. McNeal, led by Robert Downey Jr. in his Broadway debut, did not receive any Tony nominations.

Though George Clooney got his first Tony Award nomination for his role in Good Night, and Good Luck, the play, which he co-wrote, did not receive a nod for best play, even as it has also been the highest grossing production on Broadway for the past several weeks.

Similarly, the celebrity-driven Glengarry Glen Ross did not get a nomination in the play revival category, but star Bob Odenkirk did. His co-stars Kieran Culkin and Bill Burr did not receive acting nods.

And while Sarah Snook received a Tony nomination for her solo performance in The Picture of Dorian Gray, the production itself was left out of the best play category. Snook won the Olivier Award in 2024 for that role after playing it in the West End.

The best play category also left out Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which won the 2024 Olivier award for best new play. The category instead consisted of more original IP, including English, The Hills of California, John Proctor is the Villain, Oh, Mary and Purpose.

Similarly, while Romeo Juliet was nominated for best revival of a play, stars Rachel Zegler and Kit Connor missed out on individual acting nods.

[From THR]

What is it about Denzel? Or is it the fact that he was doing Shakespeare? Maybe this version of Othello just isn’t the best production, but still… it’s Denzel doing Shakespeare on Broadway. If this was a production in London starring one of the greatest British actors, you can bet that the Olivier Awards would be falling all over themselves to reward the production. It’s also sick that they gave George Clooney a nom for his Lurch look (but hilarious that the play was snubbed). No nomination for Kieran too… they were like, sure, Kieran swept the awards season, but we’re going to gatekeep the f–k out of him at the Tonys.

You can see the full list of 2025 Tony nominations here.

Daniel Radcliffe Tony Awards

Daniel Radcliffe won his first Tony: ‘I will never have it this good again’

Congratulations are in order for Daniel Radcliffe! The Tony Awards were held on Sunday night, and Dan won the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical for his performance in the revival of Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along. Like the class act that he is, Dan made a very gracious acceptance speech while wearing an amazing purple suit and bow tie. His speech was full of love and gratitude towards everyone. He thanked his director and castmates, as well as Merrily’s crew, band, the stage management team, and basically everyone who “makes the show happen every day.” He also gave special shoutouts to his parents and wife. It was one big lovefest! Dan had some really special words for his costars Jonathan Groff and Lindsay Mendez, though, telling them that he’ll miss them when the show closes in July and declaring that he’ll “never have it this good again.” Awwww.

“I’m going to talk fast and try not to cry… I don’t even have to act in this show,” Radcliffe said in his acceptance speech, referring to his close friendship with his co-stars. “I will never have it this good again.”

“When I finished ‘Potter,’ I had no idea what my career was going to be,” Radcliffe said after accepting his award, according to a video recording posted to X by Deadline. “Playing one character for so long kind of builds up in you a desire to do as many things as you possibly can.”

The Stephen Sondheim musical was an infamous Broadway flop when it debuted in 1981, closing after just 16 performances. Three years after Sondheim’s death, the show was reworked by director Maria Friedman and helmed by an all-star trio, Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez and Radcliffe.

“Harry Potter is going to be the first line of my obituary,” Radcliffe, 34, told The Atlantic in April. “I wanted to try as many different things under my belt, knowing that it was going to be the accumulation of all of those things, rather than one thing, that would actually sort of transition me in people’s minds.”Following the eight-film “Potter” series, Radcliffe took on many stage and indie films opportunities.

He made his Broadway debut in 2008, starring in a revival of “Equus” that required him to perform nude. He sang on a Broadway stage for the first time in the 2011 revival of “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.”His other Broadway credits include “The Cripple of Inishmaan” and “The Lifespan of a Fact.”

Radcliffe has been a part of the “Merrily We Roll Along” cast since its off-Broadway run at the New York Theater Workshop. The production transferred to Broadway in October and is scheduled to close on July 7.

[From NBC News]

I’m so happy for him! I want nothing but great things for Dan. Like everyone else, I’ve watched him grow up and become a great actor who works really hard while also being a really decent human being. His speech was so sweet. You tell just how excited and grateful he really was to finally be recognized for his acting. Groff also finally won his first Tony for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a musical and Dan rushed up to give him a giant hug as he was making his way on stage. As he points out, Harry Potter may be in the first line of Dan’s obituary, but it will now be preceded by the descriptor, “Tony Award Winner.” I hope one day, it reads “EGOT Winner” because I have a feeling this won’t be Dan’s last major acting award.

Brooke Shields Fashion shoes Tony Awards

Brooke Shields wore yellow Crocs to the Tony Awards to match her dress

Last fall Glamour Magazine declared that Brooke Shields was in “Her F–k It Era.” Of course, my takeaway from that article was that overhydrating is your ticket to eating all the potato chips a girl could want. And then heaps more. But I digress… Brooke proved once again this weekend why Glamour got it right. She attended the Tony Awards on Sunday as a presenter, the first since being elected president of Actors’ Equity. The only hitch was, she’d had double foot toe surgery three days prior. But no biggie! Brooke had arguably the most comfortable walk on the red carpet, as she posed for photographers proudly showing off the Lay’s chip brand sunshine yellow Crocs that perfectly matched her Monique Lhuillier dress:

Brooke Shields chose to forgo the standard red carpet shoe attire at Sunday’s 2024 Tony Awards — for good reason.

Ditching the typical high-heels associated with such high-profile events, the actress wore clogs-style Crocs under her yellow dress. The shoes were the same color as her sequined gown. She showed off the shoes to photographers on Sunday night.

“I got my Crocs! I couldn’t do this in heels!” she said in a red carpet interview with People on Sunday.

The reason for the comfort attire? A day before the Tonys, Shields noted on Instagram that she was recovering from “double foot toe surgery.” The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to her reps for additional information.

It’s not the first time Shields has matched clogs with high fashion. In 2008, she was spotted wearing a long hot-pink gown with matching clogs.

In May, Shields was elected president of the Actors’ Equity Association, the union that represents about 51,000 actors and stage managers on Broadway and nationwide.

She beat out Erin Maureen Koster, a stage manager and third vp at Actors’ Equity, and Wydetta Carter, an actor who had been serving as Equity’s first vp. Shields will serve a four-year term.

“I promise to lead with strength and compassion, and I will stand up for you and command the respect that we deserve as an acting community,” Shields wrote on Instagram following the vote. “Also to those who ran, I did not run against you, I ran with you and for you. I look forward to listening to you.”

[From The Hollywood Reporter]

I do not wear high heels. It’s not a feminist statement, it’s a protest by my feet. There are many heels out there that I think are beautiful and very often complete “a look.” It’s just that when I attempt movement in them, I look like some unholy mash-up of Humpty Dumpty and a newborn foal. Such is life. Rather than practice and try to improve my gait (because I’ve worn sneakers, my feet won’t stand for the stilt nonsense), I’ve taken the route of biding my time and waiting for the shoe revolution to break out on the red carpet. Our numbers are rising, victory is in sight.

So I wholeheartedly applaud Brooke for wearing Crocs, and I’d stand by that even if she hadn’t just had foot surgery. That being said… Brooke, honey, you know you can jazz up those kicks? They make Crocs for all occasions! Questlove continually ups his Oscars Crocs game with color, embellishments, and crystals. I know the shoe color matched the dress, but this is an awards show; we need more! It could’ve been as easy as some pearls to echo the earrings. Or random cupcakes to harken back to the mysterious dessert-art from her Actors’ Equity campaign video. To close by quoting a Sondheim musical: “So many possibilities…”

Angelina Jolie Fashion Tony Awards

Angelina Jolie wore Versace at the Tony Awards & won an award for producing

Embed from Getty Images

The Tony Awards were held last night in NYC. Angelina Jolie was there, with her daughter Vivienne! Not only that, but Angelina won a Tony Award! The backstory: Vivienne Jolie is a theater geek and she saw an LA theater production of The Outsiders (which had been adapted into a musical). Vivienne dragged her mom to the LA theater and Angelina loved it too, so Angelina offered to produce the musical as it made its way to Broadway, with Vivienne working as her assistant. The musical debuted on Broadway a few months ago, in time for Tony eligibility and The Outsiders just won the 2024 Tony Award for Best Musical. Meaning, Angelina won a Tony as a producer. She’s halfway to her EGOT status. She’s OT! (She’s also won three Golden Globes, two SAGs and she has been nominated for two Emmys.)

So, for the Tonys, Angelina wore a velvet Atelier Versace gown in an interesting shade of green. Vivienne was her date and Vivienne matched her mom. What a moment for this theater kid – Vivienne was probably in seventh heaven around all of those theater people. I hope she networked and booked some jobs or internships – she turns 16 years old next month, and clearly, this is what she wants to do with her life.

Angelina also debuted a new tattoo – a small, delicate little bird on her chest. I normally don’t like chest tattoos on women, but this is really cute.

Fashion Jessica Chastain Jodie Comer Lea Michele Lin-Manuel Miranda Lupita Nyong’O Rachel Brosnahan Tatiana Maslany Tony Awards

Who was best-dressed at last night’s Tony Awards: Jessica Chastain or Lupita?

Here are some photos from last night’s Tony Awards. The Writers Guild had to give the Tony Award producers special permission to go on, but the catch was that the striking writers could not write the awards patter for the show. That led to a chaotic awards show, but still, it’s funny that the show was allowed to go on even in the middle of a writers’ strike and what feels like an incoming actors’ strike. No matter what, “awards shows matter” to the entertainment community. Kimberly Akimbo won the Tony for Best Musical, Leopoldstadt won best play. Jodie Comer – in her Broadway debut – won the Best Actress Tony for Prima Facie and Sean Hayes won Best Actor. You can see more about the awards here.

Jessica Chastain made the case that the hair stylists might be on strike too – she wore this very dated-looking Gucci gown in sunshine yellow, but her hair looked like she just pulled it back to wash off her makeup.

Jodie Comer looked amazing in Thom Browne.

Lea Michele wore Emilia Wickstead and she LOST. Not only did she lose, she watched as Alex Newell (a former Glee costar) become the first nonbinary performer to win a Tony.

Lupita Nyong’o wore Misha Japanwala – that’s a metal breastplate, it’s not Lupita just spray-painting her chest.

Lin Manuel Miranda and his wife. Such an attractive couple.

Rachel Brosnahan in Versace. Unexpected and pretty good.

Uzo Aduba is expecting her first child! Congrats to her!

Tatiana Maslany looked awful!

Michelle Williams supported her husband Thomas Kail – I love Michelle’s dress here.
