First male athlete comes out: Jason Collins gay in the NBA
The first American male professional athlete to come out, Jason Collins center for the Washington Wizards, came out of the closet publicly in an interview with Sports Illustrated.
TMZ broke the news Monday.
A quote from the SI interview: “I’m a 34-year-old NBA center. I’m black. And I’m gay. . . I didn’t set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport. But since I am, I’m happy to start the conversation.”
Jason has a twin brother, Jarron, and both have been very successful athletes for years. Both played for Stanford and were drafted into the NBA in 2001. In the interview, Jason admits he didn’t even tell his brother he was gay until last year.
Rumor has it there is a group of NFL players who are also banding together to come out very soon. Since Jason Collins “started the conversation,” that might happen even sooner than we think.
