Lisa Lampanelli started some controversy when she tweeted a photo of her with Lena Dunham with the caption, “Me with my nigga @LenaDunham of @HBOGirls – I love this beyotch!!” Understandably, it pissed off a lot of people. Lampanelli isn’t apologizing either.
Ms. Dunham has remained silent on the entire thing up until now. Which also pissed people off. Writer Shayla Pierce had a lot to say on the subject. She wrote about it on a few blogs and tweeted,
@LenaDunham has showed her true colors on this whole n-word debacle. Her silence speaks volumes. I don’t think I’ll be watching @girlsHBO anymore. And I say that with honest sadness … Lena advertises herself as a progressive but she’s chosen not to address the situation. She seems phony to me now.
(I’d guess the above statement was more than one Tweet.)
According to The Hollywood Reporter,
Dunham responded on Twitter, writing that she would never use the n-word and that Lampanelli’s tweet made her “supremely uncomfortable” but said she stayed silent because “twitter debates breed more twitter debates.”
Perhaps then realizing that’s not a very good response,
She added that “140 characters will never be enough for the kind of dialogue that will actually help us address issues of race and class,” and then commended Pierce for a “beautifully written piece,” apologizing for any discomfort she might have felt.
This seemed to be enough for Pierce who suddenly turned into a 14 year-old girl and responded with,
Thank you so much. And I do <3 you and your work. Thanks for addressing this *hugsies* @lenadunham.
