Banksy loses copyright on one of his most famous pieces

Banksy has been stripped of a trademark for his most famous artwork – because he refused to reveal his real identity to judges. The ruling on ‘Flower Thrower’ may set a precedent for his other creations around the world. The street artist, who has previously declared that ‘copyright is for losers’, lost his two-year legal battle with card firm Full Colour Black. Judges pointed to the fact that ‘he cannot be identified as the unquestionable owner of such works as his identity is hidden’. Banksy had applied for an EU trademark of the piece, which was painted in Jerusalem, six years ago – but this was challenged by a card company because the artist did not want to merchandise it, but created it as artwork instead. Full Colour Black specialises in ‘the commercialisation of street art’ and uses Banksy’s creations. It boasts on its website: ‘We have Banksy images that you probably have never seen before.’ Three judges ruled that Banksy had made graffiti which he put on other people’s property freely available for use. I’m a long time Banksy fan, but this makes complete sense.  These works weren’t commissioned. In all honesty, he should be fined for painting on someones business.  But I’m glad he wasn’t. I want him to be fruitfal in all his endeavors. Banksy Opens Walled Off Hotel in Bethlehem

Banksy is, at his core, a political satirist.  A cartoonist. He just likes to make things more public and in your face. More interactive.  So the fact that his first hotel is just a canvas for the worlds anxieties is no surprise.  But damn it’s fun! “Walled Off Hotel”, an obvious pun on the Waldorf, the New York City hotel that caters to the richest of the rich, and it’s location in the West Bank on the Palestine-Israel border wall.  It opens officially on March 11th. You have just GOT to look through these photos and see the masterpiece that I will never get to stay in because I’m not crazy and I’m not going there.
