Barbra Streisand Demi Moore Jane Fonda Meryl Streep Robert Redford

Robert Redford’s leading ladies paid tribute to their favorite costar

Does anyone else remember that episode of Oprah’s talk show, where it was basically a tribute to Barbra Streisand? At first, Barbra spoke to Oprah one-on-one, then Robert Redford came out and basically Oprah and her entire audience squealed with delight. Barbra was thrilled as well, obviously. What struck me about that interview was that Redford was truly embarrassed by the attention, but Barbra absolutely loved that he showed up and reminisced about The Way We Were. He was such a gentleman, and you could tell that Barbra still had an enormous crush on him after all of those years. Oh, I found the interview – go here to see. Well, following Redford’s passing, many of his leading ladies gave emotional tributes. I’m including the statements from Barbra, Meryl Streep, Jane Fonda and more.

Barbra Streisand: “Every day on the set of ‘The Way We Were’ was exciting, intense and pure joy. We were such opposites: he was from the world of horses; I was allergic to them! Yet, we kept trying to find out more about each other, just like the characters in the movie. Bob was charismatic, intelligent, intense, always interesting— and one of the finest actors ever. The last time I saw him, when he came to lunch, we discussed art and decided to send each other our first drawings. He was one of a kind and I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with him.”

Meryl Streep: “One of the lions has passed. Rest in peace my lovely friend.”

Demi Moore: “The world has lost an incredible actor, director, husband, father, friend… Robert’s legacy will live on forever in so many ways and I will carry the many memories we share close to my heart. What I would do for just one more dance.”

Jane Fonda: “It hit me hard this morning when I read that Bob was gone. I can’t stop crying. He meant a lot to me and was a beautiful person in every way. He stood for an America we have to keep fighting for.”

[From Variety & IndieWire]

I love Barbra, she just had to mention “when he came to lunch”!!! She loved that man with all her heart. Meryl did as well, and Jane adored him. He really was an American classic, and one of the biggest cultural icons and movie stars of the past century. I’m also adding a great tribute from Bob Woodward (Redford played him in All The President’s Men) and an amazing story from Mike Nichols.

Robert Redford’s supernatural charisma perfectly summed up in this anecdote from Sam Kashner’s Vanity Fair story about Mike Nichols casting The Graduate. https://t.co/BbSLuBegAm pic.twitter.com/H2MQ8ZQuAV

Anna Wintour on The Devil Wears Prada: ‘I thought it was a fair shot’

Anna Wintour in 2006, Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada

Holy cow, I just looked it up and Anna Wintour was named Editor-in-Chief of Vogue the year I was born. She’s been Vogue’s EIC for my entire life! So it’s a time of momentous change for Wintour (and me! just kidding) to be stepping down now and relinquishing the reins to Chloe Malle, who was a mere toddler at the time of Wintour’s ascension. She’ll still be Chief Content Officer for parent company Condé Nast, but it’s the end of an era. The timing is also fortuitous and/or unfortunate, depending on your point of view, given that this summer they finally filmed a long-awaited sequel to the 2006 hit The Devil Wears Prada. The movie — based on a book inspired by the author’s experience working as an assistant for Wintour — saw Meryl Streep deliciously play Miranda Priestly, the steely EIC of fictional Runway magazine, who audiences everywhere knew was a take on Wintour. Wintour herself has stayed largely mum on the portrayal, but not so much now! She just told David Remnick of The New Yorker that she thought the movie “was a fair shot.”

Based on the 2003 bestselling novel of the same name by Lauren Weisberger, who had previously worked as a personal assistant to Wintour at Vogue, the movie tells the story of an aspiring writer (Anne Hathaway) who finds a job at a top fashion magazine under the direction of a tough-as-nails editor.

Meryl Streep played Miranda Priestly, who is assumed to be based on Wintour. The character became shorthand for difficult-to-please bosses no matter the industry, and Streep earned one of her many Oscar nominations for her performance.

In the past, Wintour has seemed reticent to discuss it all. During a recent appearance on “The New Yorker Radio Hour” podcast, however, the fashion powerhouse actually joked to the host David Remnick that she “went to the premiere wearing Prada, completely having no idea what the film was going to be about.”

“First of all it was Meryl Streep, which, fantastic,” Wintour said. “And then I went to see the film, and I found it highly enjoyable. It was very funny.”

And while she told Remnick, who is an editor at The New Yorker, that “the fashion industry were very sweetly concerned for me about the film, that it was going to paint me in some kind of difficult light.”

Wintour sounds like she both found it delightful and has made peace with it.

“In the end it had a lot of humor to it, it had a lot of wit, it had Meryl Streep,” Wintour said. “I mean, it was Emily Blunt [who played senior assistant Emily Charlton in the film]. They were all amazing. And in the end, I thought it was a fair shot.”

In 2009, she told David Letterman that the film was “fiction” and pointed out that “as my publisher says in the movie, I’m not always warm and cuddly.”

“What I liked about the movie is that it really showed all the hard work that goes into the making of the magazine,” she allowed at the time.

[From CNN]

Ok, I’m definitely side-eyeing Wintour’s claim that she went to the premiere “completely having no idea what the film was going to be about.” If that’s really the case, I’d call it an instance where an assistant should’ve been fired! That being said, I think Wintour is striking the right tone here. She knows the rumors about her; in that Letterman clip from 2009 she lists off everything she’s been called over the years, from “Ice Queen” to “Dominatrix.” (Though she doesn’t issue any denials!) So here with Remnick, instead of making her response about her, she touts the comedy, acting goddess Meryl Streep, and she genuinely seems sweetly fond of Emily Blunt. Wintour had a similarly tactful response when Remnick asked her about AOC’s “Tax The Rich” dress at the 2021 Met Gala. Like I said, I think Wintour plays it the right way. Or who knows, maybe she’s loosened up in how she sees herself in the near 20 years since the movie came out.

One thing, though, about the Letterman interview: I watched the clip again and they don’t make it clear in the edit or caption, but the appearance is from August 2009, so I’m pretty sure the movie Wintour is referring to in the quotes excerpted above is The September Issue. That documentary was made by R.J. Cutler (he did last year’s Martha, does he have a type?) and came out in September 2009, tracking Wintour as she oversaw production of Vogue’s September 2007 issue. I think it’s an important distinction that she was praising a doc she was a participant in, as opposed to The Devil Wears Prada. Curiously, I remember watching The September Issue with my father and his visceral take on Wintour was that she was deeply insecure.

Martin Short Meryl Streep

Page Six: Meryl Streep & Martin Short have been dating for over a year!

It was around the Golden Globes in 2024 when people really started to wonder if Martin Short and Meryl Streep were really happening. Short is a widower – his wife Nancy passed away in 2010. Meryl is apparently permanently estranged from her husband Don Gummer, although neither has made a move to file for divorce. Meryl now appears in Only Murders In the Building alongside Short and Steve Martin, and that seems to be where Meryl and Martin Short fell for each other. Granted, they’ve known each other for decades, but it really looks like this friendship turned romantic more than a year ago.

Meryl Streep and Martin Short may have been keeping fans in the dark on their relationship, but Page Six has learned that the two have actually been dating for “well over a year now.” A source tells us that the romance between the “Only Murders in the Building” co-stars was “completely unexpected” and also “took them by surprise.”

“Meryl couldn’t help but fall for Martin,” the insider shares. “He is a gentleman, he keeps her laughing and is an all around positive person. She loves being around him.”

According to the source, neither Streep, 75, nor Short, 74, “were looking for a relationship when they started dating.” The pair’s “friends and family, including their kids, absolutely approve of their relationship and think they’re adorable together.”

Short and the “Devil Wears Prada” star’s romance comes after Page Six revealed in October 2023 that the latter secretly split from her husband, Don Gummer, in 2017. The exes were married for 40 years. Streep previously dated actor John Cazale, whom she cared for until he died from lung cancer in March 1978. The Tony Award winner, meanwhile, was wed to wife Nancy Dolman for three decades until she passed away from ovarian cancer in 2010.

“Meryl and Martin have bonded over the loss of their exes,” who both passed away from cancer, the insider says.

Our source tells Page Six that the duo are happy with the status of their relationship and have no plans to wed.

“Meryl is still legally married to Don but even if she were divorced, that’s just not something that she or Martin are interested in,” the insider explains. “They’re happy dating as boyfriend and girlfriend. They’ve been friends for years and have several mutual friends.”

Although the couple has “traveled in the same social circles, they were never really on one another’s radar in terms of a romantic relationship.”

There’s this whole discourse online where toxic men are always complaining about how women only want to date tall, ripped, rich men. It was always BS, but I want to show those toxic men this relationship and let them know that this is actually what most women want: a nice guy who makes us laugh. I also want to ask the ladies… you would shoot your shot with Martin Short, right? Like, I totally get this relationship – Martin Short is a doll, he would keep you laughing and he seems like a really good and decent man. Meryl is probably having a great time.

Cannes: Greta Gerwig stuns in Saint Laurent, Meryl classes it up in Dior

The Cannes Film Festival kicked off on Tuesday with its first premiere, an opening ceremony, a press conference for the Cannes jury and more. Last year’s Cannes was a snooze, almost like they were trying to be controversial in the wrong direction (a Johnny Depp premiere) and trying to mute the one thing which people enjoy about Cannes: the glamour and fashion. This year, the festival put three very fashionable women on the jury: Greta Gerwig (she’s the jury president), Lily Gladstone and Eva Green. On the first night, Meryl Streep was honored and several amazing French actresses came out (Lea Seydoux, Juliette Binoche). The festival is really trying to bring eyes back to the south of France.

So, let’s get to the fashion. On opening night, Greta wore Saint Laurent – a very smart gown in a great color. Hours beforehand, Greta’s photocall look became THE topic of conversation on Fashion Twitter – she wore a Maison Margiela dress with a corset bodice and overdrawn hips. I kind of hate that dress, but I love the Saint Laurent.

Lily Gladstone wore Gucci and Eva Green wore Armani to the opening night. I imagine both women have their pick of designer frocks for the festival, and I’m excited to see what Lily brings out. This Armani on Eva is a bit different – usually she goes for goth-glam, this seems more goth-princess.

Meryl Streep looked amazing in Dior. Seriously, what a fantastic dress for her.

Juliette Binoche also wore Dior Haute Couture – I like the dress a lot and her face card is eternal. But the wet-look hair is killing me.

My least favorite look of Day 1 was Léa Seydoux in Louis Vuitton. Blah.

Meryl Streep reunited with her ‘Devil Wears Prada’ ladies Emily Blunt & Anne Hathaway

One of the few things we heard ahead of the SAG Awards was that there would be a reunion for the three women of The Devil Wears Prada. It’s sort of weird to think that no one has put Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt together on stage in all of these years, but it finally happened. Meryl even wore Prada to the SAGs, and she was joined by Emily and Anne, who brought out her glasses and the envelope. ACTING! Anne even wore cerulean blue, a reference to that scene. This was adorable and I love that all three women were up for it.

Emily Blunt wore Louis Vuitton, btw – it was a simple look and it worked. Emily also picked up a SAG Award as part of the Oppenheimer ensemble.

Emma Stone also wore Louis Vuitton – this is basically the only good thing she’s worn throughout the entire awards season. Which means her Oscar dress is probably going to be a trainwreck.

Meryl Streep celebrated the 40th anniversary of ‘Sophie’s Choice’ with friends

Real talk: I’ve never actually sat down and watched Sophie’s Choice. I know, I know, it’s a classic and Meryl Streep won one of her three Oscars for the role. If it makes a difference, I read the William Styron novel and it’s incredibly dark, so dark that I never really wanted to watch the movie. In any case, this is the 40th anniversary of the film, and MoMA hosted an anniversary screening. Meryl, Kevin Kline and Peter MacNicol all attended, as did many of Meryl’s favorite people and costars.

My first thought was… are they going to do a glamorous anniversary screening about such a sad film? But you know what, they did big anniversary events for all of the dark and violent “classic films” involving men, so let Sophie’s Choice have a moment. Let Meryl have a moment as well – since we learned that Meryl and Don Gummer split, Meryl has been turning up to lots of events, including the Golden Globes and Grammys. She went to the Grammys with her son-in-law Mark Ronson (he’s married to Grace Gummer) and she looked like she was having a great time (and she got a bit too close to Beyonce).

Also in attendance at this MoMA screening… Uma Thurman, Cate Blanchett, Louisa Jacobson (one of Meryl’s daughters), Ethan Hawke, Sarita Choudhury and Claire Danes (one of Meryl’s on-screen daughters). Cate’s ombre denim suit is bonkers.

You guys, are Meryl Streep & Martin Short actually happening or what??

For the record, I would love nothing more than a juicy Meryl Streep romance scandal. I would love it if, after her 45-year marriage ended, Meryl became a tabloid homewrecker, or she was caught in flagrante on a billionaire’s yacht. Please, that would be so much fun. Meryl announced her split from Don Gummer last October, after Deuxmoi sort of revealed it first through a blind item. As it turned out, Meryl and Don had already been separated for six years. It felt like there was something going on… with Don. But what if Meryl was the drama? What is she started working with Martin Short on Only Murders in the Building and decided that Short was the one? Well, people really started pushing that theory at the Golden Globes, because Meryl and Martin Short were seated together and they looked chummy. Days later, Martin Short’s rep said it wasn’t happening. HUH.

Rumors of a romance between Meryl Streep and Martin Short have been greatly exaggerated. Following Sunday’s Golden Globes, fans began speculating about the seeming closeness between the Only Murders in the Building costars.

On Tuesday, a rep for Short confirmed to PEOPLE that the pair “are just very good friends, nothing more.”

In October, PEOPLE confirmed that the Mamma Mia! star, 74, is separated from husband of 45 years Don Gummer. While the news broke just recently, the pair had actually quietly ended their romantic relationship six years ago.

“Don Gummer and Meryl Streep have been separated for more than 6 years, and while they will always care for each other, they have chosen lives apart,” a rep for Streep told PEOPLE in a statement.

[From People]

In case you’re wondering, Short is a widower – his beloved wife Nancy passed away in 2010. He and Meryl have also known each other for decades, and I’m sure Meryl knew Nancy as well. Now, that being said, it wouldn’t be scandalous if Short and Streep were dating, and I genuinely hope they are. Meanwhile, apparently Selena Gomez has now said that the gossip she told Taylor Swift at the Golden Globes was about two of her friends who “hooked up.” Deuxmoi also said that Short and Streep really are happening. You guys… what if…???
