Cannes: Greta Gerwig stuns in Saint Laurent, Meryl classes it up in Dior

The Cannes Film Festival kicked off on Tuesday with its first premiere, an opening ceremony, a press conference for the Cannes jury and more. Last year’s Cannes was a snooze, almost like they were trying to be controversial in the wrong direction (a Johnny Depp premiere) and trying to mute the one thing which people enjoy about Cannes: the glamour and fashion. This year, the festival put three very fashionable women on the jury: Greta Gerwig (she’s the jury president), Lily Gladstone and Eva Green. On the first night, Meryl Streep was honored and several amazing French actresses came out (Lea Seydoux, Juliette Binoche). The festival is really trying to bring eyes back to the south of France.

So, let’s get to the fashion. On opening night, Greta wore Saint Laurent – a very smart gown in a great color. Hours beforehand, Greta’s photocall look became THE topic of conversation on Fashion Twitter – she wore a Maison Margiela dress with a corset bodice and overdrawn hips. I kind of hate that dress, but I love the Saint Laurent.

Lily Gladstone wore Gucci and Eva Green wore Armani to the opening night. I imagine both women have their pick of designer frocks for the festival, and I’m excited to see what Lily brings out. This Armani on Eva is a bit different – usually she goes for goth-glam, this seems more goth-princess.

Meryl Streep looked amazing in Dior. Seriously, what a fantastic dress for her.

Juliette Binoche also wore Dior Haute Couture – I like the dress a lot and her face card is eternal. But the wet-look hair is killing me.

My least favorite look of Day 1 was Léa Seydoux in Louis Vuitton. Blah.

Zendaya wore two Mugler looks to the London ‘Dune 2’ premiere: robot diva?

Here are photos from the huge Dune 2 premiere in London last night. The whole cast turned out from the look of it, including “surprise” cast member Anya Taylor Joy. There were rumors that Anya turned up at some point but her appearance at the premiere ended up confirming it. She dressed in her best sandworm chic, aka get-thee-to-a-nunnery Dior.

No one was paying attention to poor Anya though, not when Zendaya came to play. Zendaya did two different looks for the red carpet, first showing up in a robot ensemble. This is Mugler and yes, her ass cheeks were out when she turned around. It’s a lot of look, as Tim Gunn likes to say. It would feel more on-theme if Zendaya was playing a robot or someone robotic, but her character is a flesh-and-blood Dune resident (don’t ask me, I’m no expert). After the robot ensemble, she switched into a slinky black Mugler dress.

Zendaya’s sartorial shenanigans also overshadowed Florence Pugh, who I would argue was the actual best-dressed person there. Miss Flo wore this stunning Valentino with a hooded cowl neckline. I love it, I love everything about it – it feels Dune-y and futuristic but it’s still just a beautiful dress, appropriate for a red/sand carpet. The color is gorgeous.

Other notable fashion moments: Timothee Chalamet wore Haider Ackermann. It’s meh, which is disappointing. His style had been so great at all of the photocalls, it makes me wonder if he or his stylist mixed up the looks and Timmy was supposed to wear this to the Paris photocall or something. Lea Seydoux wore a very boring Louis Vuitton, and Rebecca Ferguson wore an optical illusion (??) Fendi dress.

Kristen Stewart brought out more bad Chanel looks for the Cannes red carpet

Here are some photos from the past two days of the Cannes Film Festival. I actually totally missed Kristen Stewart’s Monday night Chanel look, so I’m including that in this post. Obviously, K-Stew only packed Chanel clothes for her Cannes appearances. She’s a brand ambassador and, as I’ve stated dozens of times now, the collaboration doesn’t work on either side. Her Monday night look was that f–king diaper dress with a cropped sequined top. God-awful. On Tuesday night, she got Chanel trousers and a buttoned tube top. I’ll say one nice thing: I like the cut of the trousers.

Jake Gyllenhaal and his girlfriend Jeanne Cadieu made an appearance on Tuesday. Jeanne wore Loewe. It took me way too long to realize that the top part of the dress is supposed to look like puckered lips. It’s SO bad. The shoes are awful too. She’s trying too hard. So is Jake.

Lea Seydoux in bespoke Louis Vuitton. I feel like it’s an invasion of body snatchers over here, because this is like the eighth LV dress I’ve seen in the past week where I’m like “wow, that’s actually a good look.”

Berenice Bejo in Alexis Mabille. A glorious mess. It’s so bad, it’s actually really fun.

Deepika Padukone in Ashi Studio Couture. Oh, honey. I have similar coloring and I would not be caught dead in this shade of pumpkin spice. It’s not that the color looks flat-out bad on her, but just… why? Why would you wear that when you could wear red or green or literally any other color which would be a million times more flattering? The sculptural element of the gown is alright.

Kristen Stewart wore a tweed Chanel suit for her Cannes photocall: ugh or fine?

Here are some photos from the Cannes photocall for Crimes of the Future, David Cronenberg’s latest futuristic/body-horror film. Crimes of the Future stars Kristen Stewart, Lea Seydoux and Viggo Mortensen, and they all came out for Cannes. Kristen has become a real fixture at Cannes in recent years and I get the feeling that she enjoys this part of film promotion. Plus, it’s not like she has to worry too much about what to wear. Chanel just sends her terrible sh-t and she wears it. I am so ready for this brand-ambassadorship to be over. K-Stew and Chanel never fit together. This suit is so dumb!

Anyway, ahead of the Cannes premiere, Kristen chatted with Women’s Wear Daily about Cronenberg, her engagement and her style. Some highlights:

Working on Crimes of the Future: “People associate David with body horror, and sort of a critical eye on the world that we live in. But what is always present is desire and sensuality, there’s always a reason why he’s stepping toward fear. In this movie, it just feels like a testament to his entire life. He’s given so much in every film he’s ever made.”

She doesn’t have some big career plan: “You step toward something because it intrigues you, there must be an intellectual reason why, but you never really know how to articulate that until you’ve made the film. It’s just having that question mark inside of your body going, ‘Oh, that wants to come out.’”

She’s gotten more comfortable in the public eye: “I think it’s an evolution. It’s kind of nice to be uncomfortable in public because it really forces you to be confrontational with your most inner self, and you’re not allowed to ignore who you are. It’s sort of like you shine a light on something and so you really have to stare at it. I’ve gotten comfortable with being uncomfortable. You just sort of have to find a way to exist in any space. I probably would never have done [that] if I wasn’t an actor, I would always just sort of default and settle. It’s nice to sort of always be like, ‘stay on your tippy toes, lean in, like try to reach for the stars.’ I know that sounds totally cliché, but if you’re not forced to, or if you’re not encouraged to and supported throughout, you won’t.”

Her “brave” fashion: “I would feel worse not doing it. I would feel more scared being tamed.”

Her ambassadorship with Chanel: “I’ve been allowed to excavate my own story within Chanel’s continuous stories,” she said, noting there are several awards shows a year with different looks and themes and she looks for pieces, not trends. “The reality outside of a narrative is interesting, because when I watch a show it seems like a movie. Anytime I ever feel curious about a certain look or averse to a certain look, they always encourage me to just take my own path. I never feel dressed by another person. I never feel like I’m selling a product. I always feel encouraged to like, you know, find myself,” she said of her relationship with the house.

I don’t find Kristen’s style to be brave at all? That’s fine, every person doesn’t have to be some brave, avant-garde fashionista. Sometimes you can just like pretty things and want to wear flattering clothes. To me, the problem with Kristen’s work with Chanel is that the house is too safe, too boring, too stuffy for her. She needs thrift store, vintage Balenciaga and the latest punk streetwear. By wearing Chanel on every red carpet, it’s like she’s trying to bring a punk edge to the staid, rich-bitch-at-lunch Chanel energy and it just falls flat.

Florence Pugh in Carolina Herrera at the BAFTAs: one of the worst looks of the event?

Here are some fashion photos from last night’s BAFTAs. There was some wild fashion in London, honestly. People were a little surprised by Florence Pugh’s new look on the red carpet. We had not seen her new hair cut and color, this was the big debut. Thoughts? I think her old honey-blonde color suits her better, but I’m not against people going darker. The cut is A LOT, but maybe the whole thing is for a movie. Her dress is Carolina Herrera and it’s one of the worst dresses of the awards season, hands down. Florence really loves mullet dresses and minidresses-with-trains, and I feel like she’s worn (better) versions of this style before. But this is just awful, I can’t believe her stylists let her leave the house like this.

A rare red carpet appearance from Emma Watson. She wore Oscar de la Renta, a black-and-white mullet dress. It’s okay? I feel like her hair stylist was trying too hard to make Emma look “a little bit undone” yet maintain the strong center-part. Eh.

Lea Seydoux in Louis Vuitton. Yes, the “sleeves” are unattached to the dress. It’s a very strange look. I’m not entirely sure about her pixie cut either.

Caitriona Balfe in custom Armani. More velvet, there was so much velvet at the BAFTAs. Yeah, I think Balfe is gorgeous but I’ve started to realize that her personal style is a bit “off.” She doesn’t do “pretty princess.” She likes more off-beat looks.

Daisy Ridley in Vivienne Westwood. I actually love the dress, but I almost always love Westwood. The styling is a bit too severe for this dress, right?

Haley Bennett in Valentino. This is… a bit much. It’s a reminder that celebrities missed wearing big ball gowns to awards shows too.

Adwoa Aboah in Saint Laurent. I love the simplicity of this sack dress. So elegant.

James Bond's 'No Time To Die' World Film Premiere Held at the Royal Albert Hall

Here are some of the celebrity photos from last night’s No Time to Die premiere at the Royal Albert Hall in London. It was a royal premiere and royals did come out, but a lot of Bond-franchise people came out as well, which was nice to see. Ana de Armas reportedly has kind of a throw-away role as a Bond Girl, so she came out to the premiere too. She wore a custom Louis Vuitton which… it’s pretty. It’s not groundbreaking or anything, but it’s a nice dress. I cannot believe how different she looks with those bangs though. Of course she’s still lovely, but she went from “bombshell” to “pretty girl-next-door.” I hope she grows them out!

World Premiere of No Time To Die on Tuesday 28 September 2021

Here’s Double-Oh-My-God Daniel Craig looks orange!! He put on some makeup for the premiere and they didn’t match his skin tone. He wore Tom Ford. Rachel Weisz wasn’t with him? No red carpet photos and she wasn’t with him for the royal reception line either.
