Ethan Hawke: Denzel Washington is ‘the greatest actor of our generation’

Ethan Hawke is one of the best talkers or best conversationalists out there. The man loves to talk, he loves to be interviewed, he loves to shoot the sh-t. Ethan was recently interviewed by Chris Wallace for Wallace’s Charlie Rose-esque Max series Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace. This one clip is making the rounds, where Ethan once again talks about how much he f–king loved working with Denzel Washington. They first worked together on Training Day, for which Ethan was nominated for an Oscar and Denzel won his second Oscar. Ethan basically said the same thing Tom Hanks said about working with Denzel, that it was like working with a next-level actor and one of the greatest actors of all time. Ethan also revealed what Denzel said to him at the 2002 Oscars when Ethan lost.

Ethan Hawke is revealing the advice his Training Day co-star Denzel Washington told him after he lost at the 2002 Academy Awards. The two legendary actors were both nominated that year for their roles in the 2001 film, including best actor and best supporting actor, respectively. While Washington won in his category, Jim Broadbent beat out Hawke for his performance in Iris.

During the actor’s recent appearance on Max’s Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace, he revealed why Washington whispered in his ear during the ceremony that it’s actually better to lose the Oscar.

“You don’t want an award to improve your status. You want to improve the award’s status,” Hawke recalled, quoting his former co-star. “That’s the way he thinks, and that’s what I’m talking about playing with [baseball great] Babe Ruth.”

Earlier during the interview, the Leave the World Behind star compared working with Washington to what it would be like to play baseball with Ruth.

“I think when all is said and done, he’s the greatest actor of our generation,” he said. “The Academy Award has more power because Denzel has a couple. It didn’t elevate who he was.”

That being said, when Wallace asked Hawke if he would have rather just won the Oscar more than two decades ago, the actor admitted that he was just thankful to be nominated.

“No… I mean, yeah, I guess,” the Before Midnight star responded. “I was at the Oscars sitting next to Denzel Washington and nominated against Ian McKellen. I had already won. It was impossible for me not to see it any other way.”

[From THR]

I forgot that Jim Broadbent won that year! Broadbent had a great run in 2001 – he was in Moulin Rouge, Bridget Jones’s Diary AND Iris (which is what he won for). I understood why Broadbent won that year, and the advice Denzel gave Ethan was true – he didn’t need an Oscar to tell him he’s a good actor, or for his status. Anyway, Ethan has been giving Denzel his flowers for decades now. Ethan just loves Denzel so much – he also talks that way about River Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Meryl Streep celebrated the 40th anniversary of ‘Sophie’s Choice’ with friends

Real talk: I’ve never actually sat down and watched Sophie’s Choice. I know, I know, it’s a classic and Meryl Streep won one of her three Oscars for the role. If it makes a difference, I read the William Styron novel and it’s incredibly dark, so dark that I never really wanted to watch the movie. In any case, this is the 40th anniversary of the film, and MoMA hosted an anniversary screening. Meryl, Kevin Kline and Peter MacNicol all attended, as did many of Meryl’s favorite people and costars.

My first thought was… are they going to do a glamorous anniversary screening about such a sad film? But you know what, they did big anniversary events for all of the dark and violent “classic films” involving men, so let Sophie’s Choice have a moment. Let Meryl have a moment as well – since we learned that Meryl and Don Gummer split, Meryl has been turning up to lots of events, including the Golden Globes and Grammys. She went to the Grammys with her son-in-law Mark Ronson (he’s married to Grace Gummer) and she looked like she was having a great time (and she got a bit too close to Beyonce).

Also in attendance at this MoMA screening… Uma Thurman, Cate Blanchett, Louisa Jacobson (one of Meryl’s daughters), Ethan Hawke, Sarita Choudhury and Claire Danes (one of Meryl’s on-screen daughters). Cate’s ombre denim suit is bonkers.

Ethan Hawke: Pedro Pascal is a ‘very attractive & extremely talented man’

Here are some photos of Ethan Hawke and Pedro Almodovar at the Cannes Film Festival this week. They premiered their new film, Strange Way of Life, on the second night of the festival. Strange Way of Life is Almodovar’s “gay cowboy movie,” and from the looks of things, he filmed like a Douglas Sirk film, all soap-opera melodrama and big feelings, only in a 30-minute short film. Ethan Hawke’s gay cowboy partner in the film is played by Pedro Pescal, only Pedro skipped Cannes. He was a no-show at the photocall and premiere. I wonder why he skipped? Maybe he’s feeling overexposed these days. Maybe he had other work commitments. Maybe he didn’t feel like flying to France just to shill a 30-minute short film?? Anyway, Ethan was full of praise for Pedro:

Ethan Hawke has praised his Strange Way of Life co-star Pedro Pascal, calling him a “very attractive and extremely talented man”.

The film, directed by Pedro Almodóvar, is a 30-minute gay Western short film that finally had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this week. It is Almodóvar’s second film in the English language, after 2020’s Human Voice. It follows Pascal’s character Silva, who travels across the desert on horseback to visit his friend Sheriff Jake (Hawke), for the first time in over two decades. While the initial mood of their reunion is a celebratory one, conflict arises over Silva’s desire to revisit the past, and Jake’s wish to keep it buried.

During a Q&A session in Cannes, Hawke had the highest compliments for Pascal when asked about what it was like to act alongside the Game of Thrones star.

“I like to be wanted, you know I don’t care. If it happens to be a very attractive, extremely talented man, all the better,” Hawke said. Speaking of the chemistry and love in the film, Hawke added: “The second you take out a camera and you start photographing people, there’s some act of love that is happening where you are saying that these people are important and worthy of time. And the things they’re feeling are important and the things they’re thinking are important and worthy of us all to consider. So, for me, it’s kind of always about love in some capacity. What moves us is what we want, what we love. Desire makes the world spin around.”

[From The Independent]

I mean, I think most actors would say “yes” to anything Pedro Almovodar asked them. Especially American actors – Almodovar usually just casts Spanish actors in his mostly Spanish-language films. The fact that he cast Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal as gay cowboys is pretty great though. I do wish Pedro had come to Cannes, just for some lustful posing with Ethan. Maybe that’s exactly why Pedro avoided it!

Ethan Hawke talks about Paul Newman, Marvel, Tom Cruise & so much more

Ethan Hawke is currently promoting an HBO Max docuseries which he directed. It’s called the Last Movie Stars, and it’s about the lives and careers of Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward. Mostly about Paul Newman. It sounds like a fascinating project, and Hawke based everything on the transcripts from a series of deeply personal interviews Newman did when he was considering working on a memoir. Hawke has so much love for Paul Newman in general, but especially Newman’s craft, his skill, his decision-making as an actor and a man. Hawke spoke to IndieWire recently about the docu-series and this too is Classic Ethan Hawke. He will talk anyone’s ear off. He is one of the best name-droppers in the industry. He has an encyclopedic memory for sh-t famous people said to him. He also knows that at 51, he’s in the “last act” of his career, where he will pretty much only play, as he calls them, “old-man” roles. He seems fine with it. You can read the full piece here. Some highlights:

What helped him get through a messy, public divorce: “The answer is always work. If you’re worried everybody has superficial interests, then you have to give them something substantive to talk about. In the years after my divorce, I doubled down on the life of an actor. I did “Hurly Burly,” I did “The Coast of Utopia,” I did “The Bridge Project” and took Chekhov and Shakespeare around the world for a year. I just decided that no amount of bad press will turn me into a bad actor if I don’t let it.

The phases where he couldn’t get work: “I always look back at the periods that I perceived as the hardest as being the ones with the most growth. It seems funny, but there was a period right before “Training Day” where I couldn’t get a f–king job because I was the Gen-X poster boy and everyone thought they knew me. I was supposed to be washed out to sea with that fad. I remember I wanted to get an audition for “Saving Private Ryan” and I couldn’t f–king get it. Everyone knew who I was and they didn’t want me. I’m sure if you talk to Matt Dillon or DiCaprio — anybody who’s had young success — they’ll acknowledge that you hit these walls where people think they’ve figured you out and then they’re done with you. You have to be willing to be humble enough to keep getting up to the plate.

Never winning an Oscar with four nominations: “John Coltrane never won a prize. There are benchmarks that society likes, but they can’t be benchmarks for the artist because then you’re just lost. Sometimes I wonder if Tom Cruise won the Oscar for “Magnolia,” would it have changed the trajectory of his career? It kind of seems like he gave up on chasing approval from the industry and just did his own thing. That’s probably a good thing for him, but sometimes I wish they gave him more prizes for “Magnolia” so that he had done it again. Then again, I find these things so mysterious. If Gwyneth hadn’t won the Oscar for “Shakespeare in Love,” would we have gotten 50 more better performances? Sometimes the yearning gets satiated and sometimes it doesn’t.

On Marty Scorsese & Francis Ford Coppola criticizing Marvel: “If people like Scorsese and Coppola don’t come out to tell their truth about how there are more important things than making money, who’s going to? It’s easy for them, but it needs to be somebody in the community saying, “Hey, everybody, this is not ‘Fanny and Alexander.’” If you keep reviewing these movies that are basically made for 14-year-olds like they’re “Fanny and Alexander” or “Winter Light,” then who the hell’s going to get to make “Winter Light”? I appreciate the elder statesmen of the community reminding people not to set the bar too low. I know it makes some people think they’re stuck up, but they’re not stuck up.

Why he thinks Peter Weir hasn’t made a movie since 2010: “I think he lost interest in movies. He really enjoyed that work when he didn’t have actors giving him a hard time. Russell Crowe and Johnny Depp broke him. He’s someone so rare these days, a popular artist. He makes mainstream movies that are artistic. To have the budget to do “The Truman Show” or “Master and Commander,” you need a Jim Carrey or Russell Crowe. I think Harrison Ford and Gerard Depardieu were his sort of actors. They were director-friendly and didn’t see themselves as important.

His last act: “I’ve definitely made the turn from being an old young person to being a young old person. I prefer this. I feel like playing John Brown in “The Good Lord Bird” was that for me: the beginning of my “old man” career, the beginning of my last act. But it’s the beginning of it, you know? I definitely find myself looking over a filmography and thinking about which ones I could’ve cut out because I only have so much time left. I know I only have so many movies left. You have an awareness of time. When I was younger, I was like, “I’ll do this, I’ll do that, that’ll be a good learning experience, and then I’ll try this,” thinking I had all the time in the world. Now, I’m like, “I didn’t learn anything from that one or that one, and that one would’ve been better spent in three months with my family.”

[From IndieWire]

That Peter Weir comment is fascinating, and it feels like Hawke knows a lot more than what he’s saying. Hawke also talks about how Marvel is very actor-friendly, as in the studio respects actors and wants to appeal to good actors, but Marvel isn’t necessarily director-friendly. He expounds on those themes that some directors are actor-friendly, some aren’t, and some actors are giant pains in the ass. I also agree with him about Coppola and Scorsese, which I covered at the time, and Hawke is right, those are important conversations to have within Hollywood about art and where the bar is set and whether too many movies are theme parks. The Tom Cruise/Magnolia thing is fascinating too because, well, I still halfway believe that Cruise should have won the Oscar for Magnolia. And it would have changed his career. The comment about Gwyneth was shady AF!!!

Benedict Cumberbatch finally confirmed at Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange’: yay?

wenn21934908

God, I can’t believe how friggin’ long it took for Marvel to cast Doctor Strange. It feels like we’ve spent most of 2014 talking about the casting rumors. Well, we finally have our Doctor Strange, and it’s Benedict Cumberbatch. How many names did they go through to get back to The Batch? Joaquin Phoenix. Ethan Hawke. Tom Hardy. Johnny Depp. And at least a dozen other actors. My guess is that Tom Hardy actually was a contender, but Hardy was more interested in the Suicide Squad film. My guess is that Joaquin didn’t want to sign away the next years of his career to become a Marvel company man. And so Marvel went back to Cumberbatch.

Benedict Cumberbatch has entered the world of the mystic arts. The actor will star in Marvel’s “Doctor Strange,” scheduled to hit theaters November 4, 2016. The film, directed by Scott Derrickson with Jon Spaihts writing the screenplay, will follow the story of neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions.

“Stephen Strange’s story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity,” said Producer Kevin Feige. “In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character.”

With “Doctor Strange,” Cumberbatch is just the latest actor to join the bold Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, introducing new heroes and continuing the adventures of fan favorites across multiple films.

[From Marvel]

I edited out some of the Marvel fluff about Bendy’s amazingness and how he’s starring in everything these days. The only thing I learned from the fluff was that Black Mass – Bendy with a Boston accent! – will come out September 2015. Good to know.

I also have a theory that Benedict was hesitant to sign a Marvel contract because his schedule is already pretty full. I think he’ll film Sherlock next, then maybe Doctor Strange, and then he’ll finish that in time for Hamlet next summer. So what’s changed in his schedule? He probably will back out of a couple of his pre-productions – go here check his IMDB. Still, even if he backs out of a few projects, it’s still going to be tricky to set aside five months to film a Marvel movie, you know? And for the love of God, he’s not going to have any time to plan his wedding! Ha.

PS… The National Enquirer says Cumby paid $470,000 for Sophie’s engagement ring. Really? THAT MUCH?

Amy Adams ‘appalled’ at Valentino’s PR email about purse worn at PSH’s funeral

FFN_Hoffman_Funeral_AAR_020714_51323816

Philip Seymour Hoffman’s memorial service was held Friday in NYC. Many celebrities and A-listers came out for the event, including: Meryl Streep, Joaquin Phoenix, Cate Blanchett, Louis CK, Julianne Moore, Michelle Williams, Justin Theroux, Ethan Hawke, Ellen Burstyn and John C. Reilly. The header photo is Amy Adams and her partner Darren. Amy and PSH worked together at least three times that I can see – Doubt, Charlie Wilson’s War and The Master. Apparently, Amy appeared on Inside the Actor’s Studio this past week and when she was asked about Hoffman, she broke down in tears and she was crying so hard she could barely get out any words. My point? Amy adored Hoffman and she came to his memorial out of love, respect and sadness. But the PR people at Valentino thought Amy’s appearance was a good time to promote the fact that she was carrying one of their bags (see photo here).

Philip Seymour Hoffman’s wake was just another runway for one fashion house. A tone-deaf publicist for Italian designer Valentino blasted out pictures of a downcast Amy Adams — taken outside of Hoffman’s wake Thursday — to promote one of its newest fashion accessories.

“We are pleased to announce Amy Adams carrying the Valentino Garavany Rockstud Duble bag from the Spring/Summer 2014 collection on Feb. 6 in New York,” Valentino’s flack, Upasna Khosla, e-mailed to journalists and bloggers.

Adams, who co-starred with Hoffman in “The Master,” was photographed outside the Frank E. Campbell funeral home on the Upper East Side standing near a town car wearing dark shades and a scarf — and carrying the hot new tote that retails for $3,275.

Valentino spokeswoman Mona Swanson apologized for the crass marketing blitz, calling it an “innocent mistake.”

“We sincerely regret releasing a photo to the media this morning of Amy Adams with a Valentino bag,” Swanson said in a statement to The Post. “We were not aware the photograph was taken while she was attending the wake of Philip Seymour Hoffman. It was an innocent mistake, and we apologize to Ms. Adams who was not aware, or a part of, our p.r. efforts.”

The blast from Khosla, a “celebrity relations manager,” included two pictures of Adams from photo agencies Getty and Zumapress. The captions on both photos said they were shot at Hoffman’s wake.

“Amy Adams attends the wake for actor Philip Seymour Hoffman at the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel on February 6, 2014 in New York City,” the caption on the Getty image says. Khosla’s marketing e-mail didn’t include the photo captions, only pictures followed by a promotion for the bag.

When asked whether the publicist saw the captions, Valentino did not respond to the question. Khosla’s e-mail was also riddled with typos — including the name of the bag, which is actually called the Valentino Garavani Rockstud Double bag.

The company insists she will keep her job. Valentino was quick to emphasize that Adams had no role in the promotion and did not know the pictures would be used for publicity. Adams’ own rep agreed.

“Amy Adams is not a paid spokesperson for Valentino, and the suggestion she would use this moment to participate in a promotion is truly appalling,” spokeswoman Megan Moss Pachon said in a statement.

The actress has no public contract with Valentino but did wear a red Valentino dress to the Golden Globes to accept her award for “American Hustle.”

Meanwhile, an UGG Australia source said the company sent out sheepskin boots as gifts to celebrities in New York for Hoffman’s wake and funeral in the hopes they would wear them and be photographed. The associate said the company did the “gifting because they knew a ton of celebs were in New York City and the weather sucks.”

A company spokeswoman insisted the celebrities had made requests for the popular boots.

“UGG Australia has received a number of requests this week,” the spokeswoman, Kristen Scaravaglione, said in a statement to The Post.

[From Page Six]

Yeah… that’s really awful. And I agree, that’s not on Amy Adams at all. She just grabbed a purse, and it wasn’t like she was screaming “LOOK AT ME!” at the funeral. It was very tacky and graceless of the Valentino PR people to do an email blast about it.

One exception to the “don’t pay attention to what celebrities are wearing at funerals” rule: when the funeral is for a fashion designer. Whenever a major designer dies, the women who loved the designer tend to wear the designer’s clothes to the funeral. Remember Alexander McQueen’s funeral? It was all A-listers wearing gorgeous McQueen clothes. And that’s what McQueen would have wanted too, I’m sure. But that’s not the case for Hoffman’s memorial.
