NBA star Jason Collins (center for the Washington Wizards) came out yesterday as a gay man. He is the first male American professional sports athlete to come out, and although there have been rumors about various NBA/NFL/MLB stars preparing to come out soon, Jason Collins was the first one to do it.
As shocking as it may have been to his teammates and friends (he only told his twin brother about it last year), it was especially shocking to his former girlfriend, Carolyn Moos, who dated Collins for eight years. The couple were engaged to be married but Collins called it off in 2009 without giving much explanation. Moos says it all makes sense now, but it’s very difficult for her to digest.
“It’s very emotional for me as a woman to have invested 8 years in my dream to have a husband, soul mate, and best friend in him. So this is all hard to understand. I care about him tremendously and only want the best for him. I want Jason to be happy for a lifetime and stay true to who he really is, inside and out.”
