Rob Lowe: Prince Harry & Meghan increased Montecito’s property values

Five years ago, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex bought a mansion in Montecito, California. It was the height of the pandemic, and a weird moment for the California real estate market. Which meant that Harry and Meghan got their home for a steal – a beautiful 7.4-acre property in one of the most elite enclaves in America, a mansion with (reportedly) 386,845 bathrooms, all for $14.65 million at the time. The estate is reportedly valued at $29 million these days. Harry and Meghan have tons of celebrity neighbors in Montecito and Santa Barbara, but over the years, I’ve gotten the sense that the Sussexes move around pretty quietly, and most people in the area respect their privacy. Even more than that, it feels like people in the area give short shrift to British tabloid journalists who travel to Montecito to stalk the Sussexes. Reporters arrive there and hope to spread some money around to get people to bad-mouth the Sussexes, and few people are biting. Well, E! News asked Rob Lowe about his neighbors and how they put Montecito on the map.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have brought fresh attention to their “sleepy little town” of Montecito, California, following their relocation there in 2020. Actor Rob Lowe revealed that despite the Royal duo’s efforts to maintain “a low profile,” they have significantly boosted interest in the region.

Speaking to E! News, he stated: “They definitely have brought a lot of attention to my sleepy little town. Let me tell you something: Once the royals move into your neighborhood, the neighbourhood is never going to be the same.”

The Wayne’s World star, who has called the area home for more than two decades, also discussed the transformation Oprah’s Montecito residence brought to the community. Rob reflected: “When Oprah moved in, that began the sort of resurgence of Montecito. And now that the royals are there, the good news is property values go up, the bad news is the lines are longer at Starbucks.”

However, recent reports suggest that not all neighbors are thrilled about having Harry and Meghan in close proximity. One neighbor voiced frustration over the influx of tourists and speeding cars disrupting their once tranquil neighborhood, while another sharply criticized the couple’s recent endeavors. Speaking to MailOnline, they said: “They moved away from England to escape the scrutiny of the press, and all they do is try and get in the press in the United States.”

[From The Express]

The unnamed “neighbor” is British, probably that same British guy who has been bad-mouthing the Sussexes for years. Americans don’t say sh-t like “They moved away from England to escape the scrutiny of the press.” That’s British framing. An American would say “they escaped Britain for privacy.” As for what Rob Lowe says… I like that he mentions Oprah, because she really did it first. But yeah, the Sussexes took it to the next level. It sounds like Montecito’s residents saw their homes double in value in a few short years and it also sounds like there’s a steady stream of looky loos and casual tourists who visit Montecito specifically to catch a glimpse of Harry, Meghan or any of the other celebrities in the area.

Rob Lowe: Demi Moore and I ‘briefly had a thing’

The 1980s and early 1990s were a treasure trove of celebrity gossip and drama, thanks to the Brat Pack and Brat Pack-adjacent actors. I remember seeing pictures and headlines on the cover of tabloid magazines in the checkout line when I was a kid. I was always so intrigued by these covers, even if I was too young to understand a lot of what they were talking about, lol. I think this may be my gossip-lover origin story.

Two such tabloid fixtures were Demi Moore and the ageless Rob Lowe, who today still looks exactly as I remember him from back then, haha. Demi and Rob were frequent subjects of tabloid fodder, particularly after making St. Elmo’s Fire together. Kelly Ripa must have been reading the same covers that I was back then. Rob recently made an appearance on her podcast, “Let’s Talk Off Camera.” During it, Kelly decided to shoot her shot and flat out asked him if he’d ever had a “crush” on Demi. He confirmed that while they never officially dated, did in fact “briefly” had a fling.

Rob Lowe admitted he “briefly” had a fling with Demi Moore during their time as part of the “Brat Pack” in the 1980s.

“Did you have a crush on her? Did you guys ever date? Did you all date each other? Was it like, just — was it a big romp?” Kelly Ripa asked of the group of young actors on Tuesday’s episode of her podcast “Let’s Talk Off Camera.”

“I mean, Demi and I briefly — I’m not telling tales out of school — we briefly had a thing,” Lowe, 60, said after joking that it was a “big, big sex orgy” among the “St. Elmo’s Fire” cast. The “Parks and Recreation” alum then recalled 61-year-old Moore’s engagement to their co-star Emilio Estevez – before she married Bruce Willis in 1987.

“And then Emilio and Demi I think were engaged and then we all were at her wedding to Bruce,” Lowe said before adding that it was the “biggest wedding I had ever been to up until then.”

When the “Love Life” author further reflected on working alongside the film’s cast at the time, he noted that hooking up with each other was expected.

“Look, anytime you put young 20-something men and women together, hookups are inevitable,” Lowe explained. “I don’t think that has changed.”

Lowe has been married to Sheryl Berkoff, 63, since 1991. Meanwhile, Moore and Willis, 69, called it quits on their marriage by 2000. The “Ghost” actress and Willis welcomed three daughters together — Rumer, 36, Tallulah, 30, and Scout, 33 — before they split.

Elsewhere during the podcast, Lowe revealed that he and Moore continue to stay in touch via a group text as they work on a potential “St. Elmo’s Fire” sequel.

“It’s moving along,” he said. “It’s going a little more slowly than I would have liked, but that’s a good thing because we’re trying to find the right, writer and the right story.”

Lowe also shared that “all of the actors, everybody is on board. Everybody’s excited.” He also addressed how he thinks the film’s possible sequel will work in present time as the actors are older.

“I think the theme of ‘St. Elmo’s Fire’ today is that it’s never too late for happiness,” Lowe went on. “You know, because our kids are out of school, and maybe some of us have been divorced … all the things that you deal with as you get to our ages, this is an opportunity to explore those themes with characters that people know and love.”

[From Page Six]

We can now officially put a Rob/Demi fling in the official Brat Pack canon, y’all! From a gossip standpoint, I will never stop being interested in all of the hookups, makeups, and breakups from that time period. It would be wild if they got all of the Brat Pack and adjacents together to do one big podcast recap to set the record straight (and give us more to feast on) from that era. That would be gossip headlines for days. In the meantime, we need to talk about that potential St. Elmo’s Fire sequel! It’s kinda crazy that the first movie is going to turn 40 next year. It’s pretty awesome that they’ve got all of the original actors on board, too. Anyone have any ideas for a potential plot?! Oh man, it’s been decades since I’ve seen that movie. I think I’m due for a rewatch, ASAP.

Rob Lowe on Ozempic: ‘What’s the plan for the longevity of everything?’

Rob Lowe turns 60 years old in March. Lowe is an OG Brat Packer and, back then, I never would have thought that he would have the kind of career longevity he’s had. He’s currently on 9-1-1: Lone Star and he’s fashioned a pretty successful and long-running career for himself, mostly on television. Lowe recently chatted with People Mag about his upcoming birthday, his health and wellness in general. I don’t think he’s promoting anything in particular (other than the TV show, I guess), but the conversation ended up going to weight-loss drugs and diabetic drugs. Weirdly, People Mag didn’t note that Lowe is still a spokesperson for the Atkins Diet. Some highlights:

On weight loss drugs: Stressing his commitment to overall health and wellness, the actor shares his concern with people relying on weight loss drugs, referring to medications like Ozempic, an FDA-approved prescription medication for people with type 2 diabetes. It’s one of the brand names for semaglutide — also known as Wegovy — which works in the brain to impact satiety, and is the latest Hollywood weight loss trend. “I see people who are taking all the new weight loss drugs and that’s great, and it’s really changed their lives. But my concern always is, okay, now what?” Lowe tells PEOPLE. “What’s the plan for the longevity of everything? I never ever talk about diets, I talk about lifestyle.”

He has a sweet tooth but he’s trying to be healthier: “I’m trying to be even more disciplined now as I’m older just because as you get older, you need to watch what you eat even more than when you were younger. So I tried to cut sugar completely as my new year’s resolution. And now I’m figuring, okay, that’s not sustainable for me, but how do I really watch my sugar consumption?”

He’s always been into fitness: Lowe notes that he’s never struggled when it comes to having a good grasp on fitness, boasting that he feels “better than I’ve ever felt…I can’t wait to train or to do something physical. I have very good friends and family that have to be dragged into doing something physical… that would be super tough to overcome. I am blessed that I really enjoy physical exertion and adventure. So if I’m not on a set, I build my entire day around what activity I’m going to do. It might be a paddle in the ocean, a hike, running sprints on the track, pickleball, tennis. I’m pretty much up for anything. It’s a lifestyle,” Lowe tells PEOPLE, noting that his latest health goal is trying to find the balance between “longevity and consistency” and “non-injury and pushing myself as hard as I ever did.”

[From People]

On one side, I agree with him that there should be conversations about what happens to longterm users of those diabetic/weight-loss drugs. Diabetics using those drugs are pretty much going to be on the drugs for a very long time, but people using them purely for weight loss have experimented with going off the drugs, to some wild-or-expected effects (like gaining weight back and then some). Again, drugs like Ozempic were and are made for diabetics and it’s been a game-changer for the treatment of diabetes, but… yeah, you’ll likely have to take it for years and years.

It does feel like Lowe is being sort of shady about Ozempic users, like he’s edging up to saying “why not just watch your diet and work out.” Lowe has so much privilege and he rarely ever sees it – the privilege of being a white man, the privilege of second, third and fourth chances in his professional life, pretty privilege and the privilege of “good genes.” He doesn’t know what it’s like to have a genetic propensity for weight gain or diabetes and his casual smugness is rubbing me the wrong way.

Rob Lowe sleeps a lot: ‘if there’s ever 12 hours to be had, I’m taking it’

Rob Lowe, 59, has a new interview with USA Today where he was asked for his “essentials to surviving Hollywood” and looking good. I appreciate this and wish that more male celebrities would be asked about their lifestyle. Lowe is of course known for his vampiric good looks. His tips include not drinking, something which he’s been open about for years, cutting carbs, which is sad but he’s an Atkins spokesperson, and getting a sh-tton of sleep! He says he’ll get 12 hours of sleep if he gets the chance. How does anyone sleep that long?! Heather Graham and Dakota Johnson claim they get that much sleep too. Here’s more, and USA Today has a brief video of Rob’s interview on their site. He’s promoting his new trivia game show on Fox called The Floor.

He sleeps a lot “I get tons of sleep. Like, an embarrassing amount,” says Lowe, who declines to give the number. “I don’t want people to think something is wrong with me. It’s a lot of sleep, not 12 hours. But if there’s ever 12 (hours) to be had, I’m taking it.”

Rest is so necessary that Lowe’s black Cadillac Escalade SUV serves as both transport and sanctum shuttling between projects.

“The seats recline all the way down, so I can sleep between the various sets.

“I have it down to a science. The eye mask, the Bose noise-cancelling headphones. And I’m gone.”

He does Atkins Lowe started to learn in his 30s that he couldn’t eat what he used to while staying fit. That’s why he embraced the low-carbohydrate, high-protein Atkins diet.

“I’ve been doing it ever since,” says Lowe, who has been the Atkins brand spokesperson since 2018. “It makes a big difference. You’re only as good as what you eat.”

“It bums me out. Believe me, I’d love to eat nothing but pies and milkshakes. And I would love to eat like a 15-year-old. But I can’t.”

He’s sober “I haven’t had a drink in 33 years. That’s a huge thing, even beyond recovery,” says Lowe. “When you think about the calories and the bloat you’re missing. That just adds up. So that’s super helpful.”

He makes a gratitude list every day Lowe starts each day with a prayer and a gratitude list to remind himself of life’s many blessings. Some items never change on the list.

“It’s my family, our health, my sobriety,” says Lowe. “Then I go into my four dogs (Daisy, Oscar, Owen, and Bella) and the ability to do a job I love. And I try to get the list going as long as I can. Some days it’s longer, some days it’s shorter.”

[From USA Today]

I wish I could sleep for 12 hours, but my body wakes me up after about seven. I can get to up to eight hours if I’m lucky. Like Lowe, I love naps and take a nap for about 20 minutes a day. I would sleep longer than that but I just naturally wake up after that time. I’ve been taking half a CBD/THC gummy once in awhile on the weekends (it’s legal in my state now) and I can sleep longer with those but they’re not really worth the trade off. My sleep is so much better overall now that I don’t drink though. If you’re struggling with alcohol consumption I cannot recommended highly enough that you cut back or quit if possible. (I know it’s not easy, but it will change your life.)

Oh and a gratitude list may sound cheesy and cliche, but I started filling out this little worksheet in the mornings with the things I appreciate and what I’m looking forward to doing that day. The things I’m looking forward to are usually exercise, baking or making a meal. Having them written down helps me make sure they get done. That small change has made a big difference.

Sidenote: 9-1-1: Lone Star is not coming back until the damn fall. I understand, I’m just disappointed.

Kevin Bacon Paranormal Podcast Rob Lowe

Kevin Bacon had a haunted building on his property destroyed

Embed from Getty Images

Over the past couple of weeks, we’ve talked about how I’m fascinated by dreams and other “Universe-y” things like intuition, synchronicities, psychic abilities, etc. Well, Halloween season is officially upon us, so naturally, we’re moving right along into another topic that I find fascinating: ghost stories!

On a recent episode of Rob Lowe’s podcast, “Literally! With Rob Lowe,” Kevin Bacon shared a story about his Connecticut farmland being haunted. Kevin, who grew up as a city boy in Philadelphia, decided to buy a farmhouse in 1983. He ended up loving country life so much that he started buying up the land surrounding it in order to maintain his privacy. And this is where Bacon’s ghost story begins… <Muahahaha! Cue spooky organ music.>

“I’ll tell you a funny story,” Bacon began. “The guy that sold me the house, he lived across the road.”

“One of the pieces [of land] that we bought had an old house in it and he didn’t want me to own the house. It was an abandoned house that he had grown up in,” he continued. “And we kind of went back and forth on it for a while and then eventually I said, ‘Listen, you can’t sell me a piece of land but not sell me the house that’s on it.’ ”

“He said, ‘I can’t sell it to you because it’s haunted and I’m afraid that you’ll get possessed and, you know, do some serious damage,’” Bacon said. The Mystic River star said that he and the owner “went back and forth on this haunted house thing” for a while before finally working things out.

“We finally came to an agreement in the contract that I had to destroy it within, I don’t know, a month or something like that,” he told Lowe, who then asked the actor if he ever spent a night in the ghost-infested house.

Bacon said he did not.

“Not only did I not do that, but I went up there and there were some beautiful old pine boards and a banister and I said to [wife Kyra Sedgwick], ‘We gotta take those out,’ And she’s like, ‘No, you’re not. You’re not putting those f—ing things in our house.’ ”

Lowe — whose fascination with the supernatural is no secret — also asked about the origin of the ghouls.

“It was a long story that had to do with a Native American who in the 1700s had been murdered, I think, by a colonial soldier,” Bacon shared. Before selling the house, the owner even “had ghostbusters there,” according to the actor. “It was a whole long thing,” he said.

The movie star, who has been in several horror movies throughout his career — most recently Peacock’s “They/Them” — also shared his personal stance on the paranormal.

“I always find that when you’re in a scary movie, everybody wants to know, ‘Well, have you ever seen a ghost?’ or ‘Do you, you know, believe in ghosts?’” Bacon said. “And the thing I always say is ‘I would really love to but as of yet, it just hasn’t happened. But I hope someday that it will.’ ”

The podcast host, who does believe in the paranormal, recalled his “intense” experience filming his ghost-hunting series The Lowe Files with his two sons — including a conversation he had with a ghost.

“I wish that I had kept that house up. That would’ve been a great episode,” Bacon joked. “Celebrity haunted house.”

“I would’ve been there in a minute,” Lowe responded.

[From People]

I love these kinds of stories and can listen to them all day (or at least until approximately two hours before bedtime). I’m so excited that Snap Judgement and Glynn Washington have made the Spooked podcast free again. Seriously, feel free to share any supernatural stories if you got ‘em. I am *here* for them. Anyway, I really want a follow-up interview with the man who sold Kevin that house. I’d love to know what his personal experiences were (if there really were any) and what happened with their ghostbusters ordeal. The story he told sounds a bit lot cliché, but as they say, I want to believe. I also had no idea that Rob Lowe and his kids had their own ghost-hunting series, hahaha.

Rob Lowe: If you don’t marry your best friend ‘you’re at a disadvantage’

Rob Lowe is complicated. While I have no desire to delve into his politics, of all the things I never thought he would excel at, Rob relishes being a husband and father. And he seems to have done the work in those relationships as well. His sons, Matthew and John Owen, both adore their dad and seek out opportunities to work with him. And Rob and wife Sheryl Berkoff just celebrated their 31-year wedding anniversary. While speaking to Bruce Bozzi on his podcast, Rob said the best plan is to marry your best friend. Other than that, he said to remember that everything has ebb and flow within a relationship.

Rob Lowe is revealing the secret to making his 31-year marriage to wife Sheryl Berkoff work.

On the latest episode of iHeartRadio’s Table for Two with Bruce Bozzi podcast, the 59-year-old actor opened up about how finding the right partner leads to lasting love.

“[Marriage] is hard anywhere, it is not just Hollywood – it’s everywhere,” he told host Bruce Bozzi. “Sheryl was and is my best friend. So if you marry for anything other than the fact that is your best friend, you’re at a disadvantage from the jump, because that will sustain when the other stuff ebbs and flows.”

The Unstable star adds that he believes that forgiveness allows a relationship to move forward, sharing, “People say marriage takes work. I’m not sure if it takes work, but what it does take is forgiveness, and being really cognizant of what hill you’re willing to die on.”

Lowe admitted that keeping the physical spark alive is another important factor in a successful long-term relationship.

“I do believe you need the heat for sure,” he shared. “If you don’t have the heat – and that’s a chemical thing – I mean I still have it with Sheryl, you gotta keep the heat.”

He continued: “That comes and goes too, there are times when you are like, ‘Nah.’ And then there are times when you are wild for somebody.”

[From Yahoo!]

I don’t disagree with Rob about the best friend thing. I can’t speak to relationships in which people meet and marry right away. I’m a slow simmer kind of person, I don’t open up easily. So becoming best friends with someone quickly seems impossible to me. But my parents did it and they are still best friends 62 years later. I agree with Rob’s points about ebb and flow, though. And trusting your partner will wait it out helps immensely with that. I know there’s a split #onhere whether marriage is hard or takes work so I’ll offer this instead: life is hard. And when the sh*t hits the fan and it seems like everything is stacked against you, having your best friend around really helps. Even if you lose sight of that for a little bit. Rob’s point about keeping the heat and accepting that the older you get, there will be peaks and valleys is some of the most real comments I’ve heard on that.

I just watched Rob’s Unstable series on Netflix. He and John Owen created the series. Plus, they wrote an episode, which I have to say impresses me, I didn’t know they had it in them. I liked it, the cast really makes it. Although it is yet another show in which the wife/mother died/was killed suddenly, leaving the husband devastated and having to stumble through parenting the traumatized offspring. Since the rest of the show is about John Owen’s character trying to come out from under his dad Rob’s character’s shadow, I wonder how Sheryl felt about being killed off to showcase her men’s growth? At least she’s painted as a saint, which I’m sure she is, putting up with Rob’s other bs.
