Why did Damian Lewis herd sheep over a bridge in London?

British actor Damian Lewis is a Freeman. Being a “Freeman” in London specifically pertains to a medieval title granted to tradesmen (and women!) who wanted to do business in the town Square Mile. Honest, hard-working craftsmen (and women!) who sought life, liberty, and the pursuit of taking their sheep into town without paying a toll. And so Damian did last Sunday, as a Freeman of the City of London tapped by the 12th century-era Worshipful Company of Woolmen guild to lead their annual Sheep Drive. Smartly clad in his grandfather’s 100-year-old wool coat, Damian had a smashing good time with his flock of ovine friends as they crossed Southwark Bridge on their way to a Livery Fair showcasing local wool wares:

Actor Damian Lewis drove a flock of sheep across the River Thames on Sunday in homage to a centuries-old tradition.

Lewis is among thousands of people granted the honorary title of Freeman of the City of London, which in medieval times came with the right to bring livestock across the river to market without paying tolls.

More than 1,000 freemen exercised that right on Sunday in the annual London Sheep Drive, many wearing black hats and red cloaks. Lewis wore his grandfather’s wool coat and carried a crook as he led the throng herding the animal over Southwark Bridge.

“It was fabulous,” said Lewis, star of “Band of Brothers,” “Homeland” and “Wolf Hall.”

Lewis was asked to represent the Worshipful Company of Woolmen, a trade guild dating to the 12th century. He said he was pleased to be part of “this eccentric, very British day, honoring an old tradition.”

Manny Cohen, Master Woolman at the Worshipful Company of Woolmen, said the ancient sheep-driving tradition was revived about 15 years ago and has become a major charity fundraising event.

There are no plans to bring back other ancient freemen’s privileges such as the right to carry an unsheathed sword in public and to be escorted home if found drunk.

[From HuffPost]

“There are no plans to bring back other ancient freemen’s privileges such as the right to carry an unsheathed sword in public and to be escorted home if found drunk,” is arguably one of the greatest sentences strung together since Shakespeare. But based on the wording, does this mean that it’s ok for people (free or otherwise) to carry sheathed swords in public? Were there sheathed swords used to shear the sheep on Sunday?! Anyway, I agree with Damian that yes, this whole thing is very eccentric and very quintessentially British (assuming tea was consumed along the way). They actually shut down the Southwark Bridge to make way for sheeplings, and there were men in town-crier-looking costumes and a few ladies dressed as Bo Peep. It was all fun to watch, once I was able to get past Damian’s alarming mustache (why, Damian? WHY?). I just hope the sheep had a good time! If not a baaaaaah-rel of laughs!

Damian Lewis is dating Alison Mosshart, 14 months after his wife passed away

In April 2021, Helen McCrory passed away after a lengthy cancer battle. Helen and her husband Damian Lewis didn’t talk about her cancer battle, and it felt like only close friends and family really knew how bad it was. It made Helen’s passing feel very sudden, and Damian seemed incredibly raw. He grieved her publicly in a statement, as did all of her coworkers and friends. Now, fourteen months later, Damian has moved on. He’s dating an American rocker! Alison Mosshart is 43 years old and the frontwoman for The Kills. They attended the Alchemist’s Feast a few weeks ago, and they stepped out in London again this week.

Damian Lewis and Alison Mosshart confirmed their romance as they cosied up together at private members’ club The House of KOKO’s summer party on Wednesday. The Homeland actor, 51, and the American rocker, 43, have now been pictured together four times in two weeks during a variety of high-profile outings.

Damian’s new romance comes 14 months after he was devastated by his beloved wife Helen McCrory’s death at the age of 52 after a secret battle with breast cancer. They had been married since 2007. Although he appears ready to embark on a new romance with Alison, Damian kept his wedding ring firmly on during their latest outing.

The new couple’s appearance comes as Alison’s mother told MailOnline she had given the relationship her seal of approval.

[From The Daily Mail]

I bet he probably still feels married to Helen, but I also think he’s trying to move on and he knows it’s going to be messy and painful and it is what it is. A lot of men are like this too – they have a hard time being alone, especially after being married for so long. It also seems more than possible that Damian and Alison have been friends for a long time, and she’s been there for him in a big way since Helen’s passing. Damian also has two teenagers at home, I wonder how he’s dealing with being a single parent and figuring out his dating life.

Princess Beatrice wore a pale Markarian to the Alchemist’s Feast: lovely?

Last night was The Alchemist’s Feast, which is a very cool name for an artsy society fundraiser/gala. The Alchemist’s Feast benefits the National Gallery and their Bicentenary campaign. Their big royal guest was Princess Beatrice and Bea’s husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi. Beatrice has been saying “yes” to every invite recently, and I do believe there’s an effort being made – by Bea and others – to push her into the spotlight. I think this is part of a campaign to make her a “working royal.”

Beatrice’s style has improved so much since she married Edo. While she still wears some bonkers fashion every now and then, she’s cleaned up her look so much. She’s consistently going “softer” – pastels, florals, less jarring colors and patterns. This gown is a good example! It’s likely Markarian and it suits her. Pale green is a tricky color but the black accents make it work. I wouldn’t have put this headband on her, but overall, the look is great.

Other guests included Damian Lewis (sob), Sienna Miller and Joely Richardson. I love Joely’s bronze jumpsuit, I just wish we couldn’t see her bra. Sienna looks over it but glamorous.

Will ‘Billions’ ever be the same after the Season 5 finale? (spoilers)

bobby 2

SPOILERS for Billions Season 5.

I got into Billions after it was on air for a few seasons, and it turned out to be one of my favorite shows in a weird way. I enjoy the excess, the petty boy dramas, the machinations and manipulations. Until Asia Kate Dillion joined the cast, I never really rooted for either “side,” but Dillion’s Taylor Mason character became my favorite, and I still root for Taylor so hard. Plus, I have always been a Damian Lewis fan. Even when he’s playing a sociopathic billionaire, I enjoy his acting and the humanity he brings to Bobby Axelrod, a character which could have been a cartoon if some other actor had played him.

Well, that’s all done now. In a very dramatic season finale, Bobby Axelrod finally got played. He was heading to jail for sure and he decided to run – or rather fly – to Switzerland. Bobby Axelrod has been defanged and exiled, and as it turns out, this was what Damian Lewis wanted. His contract was only for five seasons and he didn’t want to sign up for any more. Especially given that his wife passed away a few months ago and he has two teenagers at home, in England. From the NY Times:

Whether Bobby will return: “There’s an opportunity maybe for me to return,” he said from his home in North London. “But for now, broadly speaking, Axe has been vanquished.”

How he was recognized as Axe: “When I’m walking down the street in New York, it’s: ‘Axe, you the man!’ He’s a really despicable human being, but no one seems to care.”

The well was dry for the character: “It’s difficult to keep mining, creatively. We know who he is.”

He wants to be close to home for his kids: And after six years of spending months at a time in New York filming “Billions,” he plans to stick close to home and to his two teenage children after “we had a sadness in our family,” he said, referring to McCrory’s death, at 52, from cancer. It’s a subject he’s reluctant to talk about, his normal expansiveness giving way to terse responses. He wants to remain in London for the foreseeable future for “obvious reasons,” he said. “It is self-evident.”

But it wasn’t just about Helen’s passing: Lewis said McCrory’s death did not explain his departure from “Billions.” He initially signed on for five seasons and “always just assumed that would be enough,” he said.

He’s not looking to do American television again: [McCrory’s passing] does explain why Lewis spent much of the last few episodes appearing remotely. Actors and crew flew to England to shoot scenes that were framed within the show as a stint for Axe in Covid quarantine. (Lewis did return to New York for part of the final episode.) But he isn’t sure when, if ever, he will seek out another American series. “I don’t like closing chapters,” he said. “But it does feel like it’s the end of that for now.”

[From The NY Times]

My heart is sort of broken for him. Season five was rough – they began filming it pre-pandemic, they had to shut down for a year because of the pandemic, then they did a massive re-write on the last half of the season and it seems like they really sped up Bobby’s demise when Damian said “no mas.” In the season finale, there was a scene where Bobby almost kissed Wendy (played by Maggie Siff) and you could just see the pain in his eyes, like he wasn’t ready to kiss an actress on-screen yet.

Apparently, they’re already filming Season 6, and that will premiere in January. Mike Prince – played by Corey Stoll – is the new “billionaire a–hole” and he bought Axe Capital for pennies on the dollar in a last-minute deal. It should be interesting. Here’s a note for the writers: Taylor forgave Wendy too easily for all of Wendy’s screwups and manipulations. Taylor and Wendy need to beef, and it needs to be BIG.

Was Damian Lewis given ‘unofficial nod’ that he will be the new James Bond?

wenn22149360

Back in June, European bookmakers had Damian Lewis as the leading contender to replace Daniel Craig as James Bond. So… we’ve already imagined it and dismissed it, because for the love of God, what’s it going to take to get Idris Elba in this role? All of this talk about who will replace Daniel Craig is sort of moot, because he really does have one film left (after Spectre) on his contract. Of course, Craig seems rather ambivalent about it and I tend to think he and the producers are waiting to see what kind of box office Spectre gets this fall. But in the meantime, one UK paper claims that Damian Lewis has been given “an unofficial nod” that he will be the next Bond.

Damian Lewis is reportedly being lined up to play the new James Bond, should Daniel Craig leave the role. The Sunday Mirror reports that the 44-year-old Homeland star has been given ‘an unofficial nod’ that he would be the producer’s first choice to become the new 007 agent.

The reports follow Daniel Craig’s recent hints that Spectre is set to be his final Bond movie. A source told the paper: ‘If Daniel Craig leaves, it’s Damian Lewis who will be crowned the new Bond. He is seen as an all-round international star who is perfect for the role. As he ages, he looks increasingly suave and sophisticated. Bond bosses are now convinced Damian is their man.’

Earlier this year, Daniel implied that November’s Spectre release will be his last. When asked if he would like to do one more Bond movie, he replied: ‘At this moment, no. I’ve got a life and I’ve got to get on with it a bit. But we’ll see.’

There has been much speculation about who might take over the role, with Tom Hardy, Michael Fassbender and Idris Elba’s names being rumoured to be in the running. MailOnline has contacted a spokesperson for Damian Lewis for further information.

I don’t have anything against Damian in general. I think he’s a wonderful dramatic actor and he would probably prove himself to be quite capable with all of the stunt work required for Bond. Plus, he would be the first ginger Bond, which is a nice mantle, I suppose. Still… where art thou Idris Elba? Why is he not even in these conversations? Amy Pascal at Sony was very into the idea of Idris as Bond, we know that from the Sony Hack. But ultimately, the decision falls to Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, who jointly own the James Bond franchise and produce all of the films now. Why aren’t they considering Big Driis?

Tom Hiddleston went to a BAFTA gala & he posted a charity video!

wenn22144498

Oh, God. Release the Dragonflies!!!!!!

Tom Hiddleston went outside on Thursday. He has been keeping a much lower profile for the past year, not showing up to the opening of an envelope, working back to back on projects he seems to really care about. And 2015 is The Year of Hiddles. He’ll have four films out this year, and it’s never too early to start hustling. So not only will we see Hiddles at the BAFTAs on Sunday night (he’s a presenter!), he also attended the BAFTA fundraising gala last night.

I’m glad he didn’t dust off his formal tuxedo – he’s probably saving that for Sunday. Instead, we got Hiddles in a nice suit and tie. He still looks super-tired, but he’s put on a little weight since his very thin appearances after filming I Saw the Light. He looks good. God help me, I think he actually looks adorable. CB and I were just talking about him this week too – I told her that I was really feeling the Hiddlesdrought and his absence had made my heart grow fonder. I needed some Hiddles and that’s why he came out!

And not only did he come out for this pre-BAFTA event, he also made his FIRST TWEET in three-and-a-half months. He responded to Damian Lewis’s “challenge” to do an on-camera tongue twister for the Sohana Research Fund. Damian has challenged people to do the “EB Tongue Twister” of their choosing. So Hiddles posted his video yesterday. Of all the tongue twisters, he has to choose the one where he says “d-ck” like thirty times? Here’s the video:

Bless his heart. I love his turtleneck sweater. I’m pretty sure that’s a woman’s sweater. You know what? I’m into it. He’s so GD adorable. I recognize that backyard too – it’s the same backyard in Tommy’s Ice Bucket Challenge. I’m assuming that’s HIS backyard. What a perfect place for a sexual fantasy about Lord Dragonfly.
