Zachary Quinto hopes George Takei changes his mind about Sulu being gay

Australian outlet Pedestrian.TV asked Star Trek: Beyond star and openly gay actor Zachary Quinto (Spock) to respond to George Takei’s negative take on the fact that the character he played in the original TV series, Sulu, was going to be made gay in the upcoming prequel. As you may recall, Takei said that while he was “delighted that there’s a gay character” that he found it to be a “twisting of [creator] Gene [Rodenberry’s] creation, to which he put in so much thought.” and that he thought it was “really unfortunate.” Takei had explained to both John Cho, who plays him in the reboot, and director Justin Lin why he didn’t want Sulu to be gay and how it was unrealistic for the character that he be closeted throughout his life essentially. They went ahead with that direction for the character despite Takei’s objections.

So Quinto has a response for Takei and while the headlines make it seem like he’s going hard against Takei’s statement, in the actual video he’s more measured and makes it about the broader point on inclusion.

As a member of the LGBT community myself I was disappointed by the fact that George was disappointed. I think any member of the LGBT community that takes issue with the normalized and positive portrayal of members of our community in Hollywood and in mainstream blockbuster cinema… I get it that he has his own personal journey and his own personal relationship with this character but, you know, as we’ve established in the first Star Trek Film in 2009 we’ve created an alternate universe and my hope is that eventually George can be strengthened by the enormously positive response especially from young people who are heartened by and inspired by this really tasteful and beautiful portrayal of something that I think is gaining acceptance and inclusion in our societies across the world and should be.

So Quinto kind of gets why Takei would object to his character having an entirely different backstory but doesn’t think it matters in the long run, which kind of goes to show how Takei got ignored in the first place. Of course it’s nice to have a gay character in Star Trek but I think they should have listened to Takei and respected his wishes instead of assuming they were doing homage to him. Takei made it clear ahead of time that wasn’t the case and it’s like they expected him to come around, that’s basically what Quino is saying. Also, I tried to go to George Takei’s twitter account to see if he’s responded to Quinto and I just got lost in all the excellent links he shares. (I searched on “Zachary” and “Quinto” on his account and there’s nothing recent.)

While searching on Twitter I found that Simon Pegg issued a lengthy response to Takei as well. Pegg defended their decision to make Sulu gay and wrote that they never suggest in the film that Sulu was ever closeted, that it’s an “alternate timeline” with “alternate details” and that “We could have introduced a new gay character, but he or she would have been primarily defined by their sexuality, seen as the ‘gay character’, rather than simply for who they are, and isn’t that tokenism?” Ok, so when Takei said he objected to his character being gay because it wasn’t right for Sulu, did they consider making a different core character gay, like Scotty?

Pres. Obama’s final WH Correspondents Dinner: hilarious or bittersweet?

President Barack Obama attended his final White House Correspondents Dinner last night, and as is usually the case, he was much funnier than the comedian guest. I enjoyed last year’s comedian, SNL’s Cecily Strong, but I could see how Larry Wilmore would be a good choice for Obama’s final WHCD. While Wilmore had some strong jokes – the childlike glee of the “Zodiac Killer” line was genuinely a favorite – Wilmore’s reception was pretty mixed and he misread the room at times. We’ll have more coverage and photos from the event tomorrow, I just wanted to post the speeches today.

As for Obama, he just had so many great one-liners about Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, Ted Cruz, Michelle, his presidency and more. Around the 24-minute mark of this video is the special video the White House made called “Couch Commander” about what he’s going to do in DC post-presidency.

Yeah… I’m going to miss Obama so much when he leaves office. No matter who wins the presidency, I’m really just going to miss him. We had a “cool” president, a funny president, but even more than that: we had a smart, compassionate, even-tempered president.

And here’s Larry Wilmore’s bit. He made a lot of “black jokes” and he even used the n-word at the end of his speech. It made me uncomfortable, but Obama rolled with it.

Michelle Obama looked amazing in this golden, glittery Givenchy! The president is right, she hasn’t aged a day in eight years.

Game of Thrones Gambling Odds: Wager on Who Will Win the Iron Throne!

Now that most of the storylines in Game of Thrones have progressed beyond the point that George R.R. Martin has reached in his ongoing A Song of Ice and Fire series of novels, all bets are off in terms of what might happen next.

Of course, that’s just a figure of speech. What we really mean to say is – it’s time for the betting to begin!

You see, up until now, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were working from some very popular source material, which meant lots of people had a good idea of where the plot was headed.

Sure, there were some digressions here and there, but for the most part, the show remained true to the broad strokes of Martin’s novels.

These days we’re in spoiler-free territory, and not even those smug book-readers know what’ll happen next.

Though Season 6 has just begun, we’ve already seen one major twist, and you can be sure there will be more to come.

Like those intimidating fellas who run the Iron Bank of Braavos, Vegas oddsmakers never pass up an opportunity to make a buck, so naturally, they’re now taking bets on the likelihood that several major characters will win “the great game” and sit atop the Iron Throne.

Check out the odds in the gallery below, and whatever you do, don’t sleep on Hodor – people like a politician of few words:

1. Jon Snow: 5/2

Jon snow photo
The odds favor the bastard son of Ned Stark (or, if you believe certain theories, Rhaegar Targaryen). It may seem unlikely for a dead man to become king, but hey, who would’ve guessed that Donald Trump would have a real shot at being president? Anything can happen, folks!

2. Daenerys Targaryen: 3/1

Emilia clarke as daenerys
Obviously, the Khaleesi has a good chance of being the first female on the Iron Throne. It’s a fairly safe soon have one more title to add to her incredibly long list.

3. Tyrion Lannister: 7/1

Peter dinklage as tyrion lannister photo
Tyrion is like the Bernie Sanders of this race. He’s a long shot, but a lot of people really, really like him, and sometimes that’s all it takes.

4. Petyr Baelish: 15/2

Aiden gillen as littlefinger
Never underestimate Littlefinger! The man might be the smoothest talker in Westeros.

5. Bran or Rickon Stark: 16/1

Bran stark all grown up
Bran, maybe. Rickon, not so much. Has anyone even seen that kid lately?!

6. Margaery Tyrell: 18/1

Nalalie dormer as margaery tyrell
She may have married two kings, but we still have a hard time picturing Margaery on the Iron Throne.

Italian court decries the ‘stunning weakness’ of the case against Amanda Knox

wenn5733323

The last time we checked in on Amanda Knox, her second murder conviction (as in, the second time she had been convicted of murdering Meredith Kercher in a second trial) had been overturned by the Italian Supreme Court. That was back in March of this year. Shortly after the second conviction was overturned, Amanda’s lawyer announced that they would be seeking financial compensation from the Italian government for “wrongful imprisonment.” It was sort of a baller move, especially considering it was seemingly up in the air as to whether the Italian authorities were going to pursue Knox for any other criminal charges. Now the Italian Supreme Court is basically saying that the prosecutors never should have tried Amanda in the first place. Sort of.

Italy’s top criminal court revealed on Monday that it overturned Amanda Knox’s murder conviction earlier this year because of “glaring errors” in the prosecution’s case. It’s the latest twist in the long saga. Knox and her then-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito were first convicted of the 2007 murder of Knox’s roommate, British exchange student Meredith Kercher, in 2009. She was found dead in a pool of blood in the girls’ shared apartment, with as many as 40 stab wounds to her body.

But the murder convictions were overturned in 2011. Italy’s highest court, the Court of Cassation, then ordered a new trial for the pair after determining that the acquittal was full of “deficiencies, contradictions and illogical” conclusions. In that time, Knox fled Italy for Seattle, where she vowed to remain even if a second trial found her guilty again. Knox and Sollecito ultimately ended up being convicted again in 2014. However, that conviction was overturned in March. The same court that had ordered the new trial criticized police and prosecutors for “stunning weakness” and “investigative bouts of amnesia,” according to the decision made public on Monday.

“There was no shortage of glaring errors in the underlying fabric of the sentence in question,” the court wrote, NBC News reports.

In a statement posted to her website on Monday afternoon, Knox, now 28, wrote that she was grateful the court was forced to declare her innocence.

“This has been a long struggle for me, my family, my friends, and my supporters. While I am glad it is now over, I will remain forever grateful to the many individuals who gave their time and talents to help me,” she wrote. “Today would not have been possible without your unwavering support. I will now begin the rest of my life with one of my goals being to help others who have been wrongfully accused.”

I’ve said before that I really don’t know this case backwards and forwards like many of you, but it always struck me that even though the physical evidence wasn’t there, the cops were right to investigate her because, truly, her behavior was very odd. Knox’s behavior was odd when she was promoting her book too, but whatever. I guess it’s over now. Hopefully.
