ScarJo on the SodaStream controversy: ‘There’s a lot of anti-Semitism out there’

Yay, more quotes from Scarlett Johansson’s Glamour & Vanity Fair cover profiles! Huzzah. I can already tell that I’m going to hate the full write-up in VF. It’s all about how she’s a goddess among women and every ScarJo fart is laced with gold and perfume. According to The Daily Mail, Scarlett did talk to VF about her fiancé and some other stuff. Some highlights:

ScarJo on Romain: “It is [easier to be with someone who isn’t famous], but it’s more than that…We do different things. He’s in the whole art-scene world. So it’s nice, because we can enjoy each other’s worlds, but we don’t have our crazy conflicting schedules and all that other stuff to contend with.”

On the SodaStream controversy: “[I’m being called] the new face of apartheid. There’s a lot of anti-Semitism out there.”

She’s not into emotional men: “Of course, actors in general, they’re obsessed with emotions. Although, he’s French, so he’s probably overly into his emotions.”

Doing voice work on ‘Her’: “I thought it was just voice-over work. My agent sent me the script and said ‘Oh it’s a few hours’. I met with Spike and ended up having this eight-hour meeting or something. By the end of which I was starving and dehydrated. And it was like ‘oh man’, you know?”

Considering I was one of the few people who was kind of on her side about the SodaStream mess, I have to say… yeah, I think part of it was anti-Semitism. She’s making it into a blanket condemnation, like every single person who criticized her decision to sign on to SodaStream and drop her Oxfam work was an anti-Semite, and that’s not the case. But SOME of it was anti-Semitic or at the very least, a knee-jerk anti-Israel reaction.

Does anyone else read her comments on “emotional actors” and think that she’s shading Ryan Reynolds a little bit? Am I overanalyzing? It’s possible. But it feels like she was talking about Romain being someone “not famous” and how different that is, and like there’s a subtle comparison about Ryan being melodramatic or something.

Anyway, there are also some additional quotes from Scarlett’s Glamour interview (you can read the full thing here). This is the article where she said she hates the “ScarJo” nickname. Here’s the full quote: “It’s lazy and flippant. And there’s something kind of violent about it. There’s something insulting about it.” VIOLENT? ScarJo, please.

‘Her’ and divorcing Ryan Reynolds: “When I started to talk with Spike about the film, we shared our relationship experiences. We talked about what it feels like to not have something work and what that does to your sense of self.”

Growing as a person since her divorce: “I think I know myself better. I feel I know now more of what I need in a relationship, what I want in a relationship. And I know I have more tools to communicate, not just with my partner, but with myself. That’s not necessarily any reflection of who I was married to or what was happening in my marriage, but really where I was in my life. When I was first married, I was much younger. And I have had the opportunity now to work more on getting to know myself. I think that makes you a better partner and somebody who is able to work with somebody and stay in a relationship in the not-romantic moments. I have more patience with myself. I have more patience with my partner. I think that just comes with age, probably.”

Planning the wedding: “We’re just going with the flow. I’ve never been one to do a full-on themed wedding. I don’t care about that stuff.”

Living in Paris: “I guess part of the wonderful thing about living in Paris is how people take their time with things. And I like to feel no pressure on the weekends in Paris. Sunday, most things are closed in Paris, and there’s something wonderful about that. So I’m much more comfortable just spending the weekend in my bed.”

Scarlett also talked more about Paris style and how she prefers the more “New York street style” because of functionality and comfortable shoes. ScarJo says: “In Paris you suck it up. You hobble around. Although my girlfriends in Paris and I decided we’re adopting the trend of athletic streetwear ’cause we got sick of it. I was like, ‘I am sick of not feeling my big toe after two hours of dancing!’”

Also – I know many are loathe to see Scarlett’s point of view these days, but I understand what she’s saying about her first marriage. She was too young. She needed to date a bunch of losers post-Ryan to figure out what she wanted from a marriage.
