Charlotte Rampling got a “surprise” Oscar nomination for her film 45 Years. I still haven’t seen it, although the reviews for Charlotte in particular are wonderful. Rampling was snubbed for nominations at many awards shows (including the BAFTAs), but the Academy showed her some love… at the same time they were actively snubbing artists of color. So when Charlotte was doing a French radio interview this week, she was asked about the growing controversy of #OscarsSoWhite. And Rampling showed off why she’s so popular with the over-60, overwhelmingly white Academy voters. Oscar nominee Charlotte Rampling has claimed the current campaign to boycott the 2016 Academy Awards over claims of a diversity deficit is racist to white people. Asked for her take on the current furore over all-white lists of nominees on French Radio network Europe 1 on Friday morning, the British actor did not mince her words. “It is racist to whites,” she said. “One can never really know, but perhaps the black actors did not deserve to make the final list,” added Rampling. Asked if the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences should introduce quotas, a proposal which no current advocate of increased diversity has mooted, she responded: “Why classify people? These days everyone is more or less accepted … People will always say: ‘Him, he’s less handsome’; ‘Him, he’s too black’; ‘He is too white’ … someone will always be saying ‘You are too’ [this or that] … But do we have to take from this that there should be lots of minorities everywhere?” When the interviewer explains that black members of the film industry feel like a minority, Rampling replies: “No comment.” [From The Guardian] We can all shake our heads and roll our eyes, but HAND TO GOD, this is honestly how many Academy voters feel. And I’d just like to point out how sad/hilarious/insensitive it is for an old white Englishwoman to claim that white people are the victims of racism. It would be like Winston Churchill claiming Indians were racist against him. When a group that has historically been the oppressor of other races suddenly claims to be the victim of racism? It’s almost magical. An angel just got his wings. Photos courtesy of WENN.
The iconic Alice in Chains album “Jar of Flies” celebrates 22 years today. The EP debuted on January 25, 1994, through Columbia Records, and was the first EP in music history that made it’s debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 Album Chart. Recorded at London Bridge Studio in September 1993, current London Bridge Studio co-owner Jonathan Plum assisted in making the “Jar of Flies” album. The EP included singles “No Excuses”, “I Stay Away” and “Nutshell”. In 1993 after returning home from tour which included Lalapalooza, the members of Alice in Chains found themselves evicted from their crash pad. Through some miscommunication, the band forgot to pay their rent and ended up with no place to stay. So, they took up residence at Seattle’s London Bridge Studios until they could sort things out. However, their stay yielded what would become one of the most influential album’s of the 90’s. Lonely, depressed and homeless, the band made the best of their situation and creativity flourished into what would become the Jar of Flies EP. “I just wanted to go into the studio for a few days with our acoustic guitars and see what happened,” said legendary frontman, Layne Staley to Hit Parader. “We never really planned on the music we made at that time to be released. But the record label heard it and they really liked it. For us, it was just the experience of four guys getting together in the studio and making some music.” The “Jar of Flies” title, Staley said, came from an experiment guitarist, Jerry Cantrell, conducted as a kid. Staley goes on to explain the experiment, “They gave him two jars full of flies. One of the jars they overfed, the other jar they underfed. The one they overfed flourished for a while, then all the flies died from overpopulation. The one they underfed had most of the flies survive all year. I guess there’s a message in there somewhere. Evidently that experiment had a big impact on Jerry.” I think I can speak for a majority of 90’s alternative kids when I say “Jerry and Layne have definitely had an impact on us!” Thanks for 22 years worth of amazing, fellas! Rest easy Layne, we miss you. The post Jar of Flies Celebrates 22 Years appeared first on Showbiz Spy.
Huh, well this is all a bit of a surprise… though really, maybe not. Mariah Carey has been split up from ex-husband Nick Cannon for a while now, and she’s been dating some billionaire bro named James Packer for the better part of a year. Well, they must be getting along pretty well, because James proposed, and now they’re engaged! Apparently James proposed last night in New York, and Mariah said yes, and the rest, as they say, is history. Since James is filthy rich, he got Mariah a bespoke ring – a whopping 35 carats, designed by Wilfred Rosado. You can see the photo in the inlay above. This will be Mariah’s third marriage, and you know what they say – third time’s a charm. Maybe this really is true love, and maybe it’ll last the rest of her life. Or maybe it’ll go down in flames in a few years like the last two. But whatever, I love me some Mimi and wish her all the best. Lamb of God guitarist, Mark Morton has been doing some solo jamming & wait til you hear who with! Morton posted the song below on his Facebook page, commenting: “Hey y’all! Here is sample of some of the new music I’ve been working on. It’s definitely a little different than what you’re used to hearing me do with Lamb. There are some great players involved in this project (including “J.P.”, Jean- Paul Gaster, from Clutch on the drums!).” Morton seems notably excited, adding, “I’m having a blast working on this stuff, and that’s what this is all about for me…FUN! I hope you enjoy it!” Listening to the track, I can definitely hear some of that notorious Clutch swing. JP definitely has a groovy style & it’s super cool to hear Mark play a more mellow tune than what he’s known for! If you prefer the heavier hitting Lamb of God, Mark Morton, you can catch them on tour through 2016. You can see where the’re coming to a town near you and purchase tickets here. As for the Mark & JP jam sessions, definitely keep ’em coming fellas! We’ll be looking forward to hearing more! The post Lamb of God Guitarist Mark Morton’s New Project appeared first on Showbiz Spy.
Emma Watson has been an outspoken activist for women, minorities, and lately, refugees. Back in September 2015, she posted a simple tweet using the hashtag #refugeeswelcome, but some people in Britain aren’t too pleased about her welcoming attitude. After all, don’t you know refugees are just terrorists and job stealers? Hermione clearly never got that memo, so someone started a petition on Change.org that’s been gaining a lot of traction lately and calls for Emma to spend a week completely unguarded and on her own in a refugee/migrant camp in Calais. Yikes. “In order to show how safe current migration is to Europe, particularly regarding the cause of feminism (I reject wholeheartedly the notion that North African and Middle Eastern migrants are unsafe, and rapists), Emma Watson should spend a week’s holiday in a Calais migrant camp, without guards of course, to show how safe, and how pro feminism these migrants are.” Look, no one’s saying that migrant camps are paradise, or that there aren’t serious issues with the open border situation that’s happening in much of Europe at the moment. But suggesting that someone put themselves in danger — because let’s be clear, that’s what the petition starter is saying should happen, here — as a way of proving that they’re wrong about their opinions/to shut them up is ridiculous. Obviously this will never happen, but people really do have way too much time on their hands.
