A painting of the late, great Bea Arthur sold at Christie’s auction house in Manhattan for nearly $2 million dollars Wednesday (April 15, 2013) night.
But it’s not just a regular old painting, no. The portrait is of Bea Arthur naked from the waist up, boobs a danglin’. Of course Bea never sat for the 1991 painting, but that didn’t stop artist John Currin from using his creative imagination. At the time it was revealed to the public, more than twenty years ago, it was quite controversial. Many people thought it was a tacky and misogynistic, while others thought it perceived older women as confident and strong.
An anonymous bidder won the painting for $1.9 million dollars, he placed the bid via phone. Of course he/she was anonymous! Probably some nasty old perverted troll bought it.
Someone obviously has some money to burn, that’s an expensive conversation piece. A damn amazing one though…
