VF: Rupert Murdoch ended his marriage to Jerry Hall by email, she was blindsided

Vanity Fair’s new cover story is all about “the real life Succession,” aka Rupert Murdoch and his game of thrones. Who will control his empire once he’s gone? Which of his children is favored? Honestly, I don’t even care at this point, which is why I skipped this story at first, that was until I saw that there was some interesting gossip about Murdoch’s fourth marriage, to Jerry Hall. Hall and Murdoch’s marriage came to a swift end last summer, and I widely assumed that was because Jerry wanted out. Turns out, not so much – Rupert wanted out and he shocked Jerry by just texting her out of the blue one day, telling her it was over. Some highlights from this VF story:

People in Murdoch’s orbit wonders if he’s lost the plot. Last June, Murdoch abruptly left his fourth wife, model-actor Jerry Hall. For two brief weeks this spring, he was engaged to Ann Lesley Smith, a 66-year-old former dental hygienist turned conservative radio host with QAnon-style politics. (Smith told an interviewer in 2022 that COVID was a “plandemic” hatched by Bill Gates at Davos.) “Rupert has been radicalized by his own echo chamber,” said a person close to him, explaining his initial attraction to Smith. In January, Murdoch scuttled a plan to merge Fox and News Corp—which would have centralized Lachlan’s control over the television and publishing divisions—after major shareholders balked. “It was a harebrained scheme. They got their ass handed to them by investors,” said a person close to the Murdochs.

The Dominion Voting lawsuit. The crisis has led to an existential threat: the $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit Dominion Voting Systems brought against Fox News. The blockbuster trial is set to begin in April, but even if the parties settle before then, Dominion’s legal filings have already publicized internal communications that revealed those at the highest levels of Fox News didn’t believe Trump’s stolen election conspiracies even as the network was cravenly promoting the lies for ratings. (In one email, Murdoch called Trump’s fraud claims “really crazy stuff.”)

Courting Jerry Hall: After a few weeks of dating, Murdoch and Hall flew on his private G650 jet to Texas to meet Hall’s Fox News–loving family. Hall left Texas at 16 to model in Europe, but as she watched her relatives line up to receive Murdoch like he was the king of red America, she realized that her family’s approval meant a lot. Six months into the relationship, Murdoch proposed. “Mick was so unfaithful to you, I’d never be unfaithful,” Murdoch told Hall, according to a person briefed on the conversation.

Murdoch found Trump appalling. “Rupert knew he was an idiot,” a person close to Murdoch said. Murdoch was a longtime champion of immigration reform and free trade and loathed Trump’s nativism and know-nothingism.

Jerry Hall hated Trump: “During dinners we had with Jerry and Rupert, Jerry wouldn’t hold back,” Cashin, Hall’s friend, said. According to a source, Murdoch wanted to buy a house in Florida to be closer to Mar-a-Lago, but Hall refused. Hall told friends she was alarmed by Trump’s lack of qualifications or respect for the office. At a lunch shortly after the 2016 election, Hall asked Trump to reroute the Dakota Access Pipeline away from Native American reservations that were protesting the project. Trump responded by asking if she wanted to serve in his administration as head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. “It was horrible. I couldn’t wait to get away,” she later told friends.

Blowing up his marriage to Jerry: At the age of 91, Murdoch blew up his fourth marriage. Hall was waiting for Murdoch to meet her at their Oxfordshire estate last June when she checked her phone. “Jerry, sadly I’ve decided to call an end to our marriage,” Murdoch’s email began, according to a screenshot I read. “We have certainly had some good times, but I have much to do…My New York lawyer will be contacting yours immediately.” Hall told friends she was blindsided. “Rupert and I never fought,” she told people. There had been disagreements over his antiabortion views and some friction with the kids over Hall’s rules about masking and testing before they saw Murdoch, according to sources. But Hall never felt Murdoch treated these as major issues.

After they finalized the divorce two months later: One of the terms of the settlement was that Hall couldn’t give story ideas to the writers on Succession. Hall told friends she had to move everything out of the Bel Air estate within 30 days and show receipts to prove items belonged to her. Security guards watched as her children helped her pack. When she settled into the Oxfordshire home she received in the divorce, she discovered surveillance cameras were still sending footage back to Fox headquarters. Mick Jagger sent his security consultant to disconnect them.

Jerry believes that Murdoch was already seeing Ann Lesley Smith: Looking back, Hall told friends that Murdoch had simply moved on, the way he had ended previous marriages. “She was devastated, mad, and humiliated,” Cashin told me. On the first day of Lent in February, Hall told friends she made an effigy of Murdoch, tied dental floss around its neck, and burned it on the grill.

His failed engagement to Smith: Murdoch and Smith had planned to marry this summer. He proposed with an 11-carat diamond engagement ring said to be worth upwards of $2.5 million. Then, a little more than two weeks after rolling out news of their engagement, the pair abruptly called it off. One source close to Murdoch said he had become increasingly uncomfortable with Smith’s outspoken evangelical views. “She said Tucker Carlson is a messenger from God, and he said nope,” the source said.

[From Vanity Fair]

This is insane! A then-91-year-old man sneaking around with an evangelical side-chick when he has a wonderful wife at home – VF details how much Jerry cared for him when he was sick with Covid and when he broke various bones. She was literally his nurse and primary caregiver, and they kept each other company during the lockdown. And he dumped her when he met some hot-to-trot nutcase. No fool like an old fool! Well, at least the Dominion Voting lawsuit will weaken his empire even further. And the sh-t about the security cameras at Jerry’s house!! Holy sh-t.

Jerry Hall filed for divorce from Rupert Murdoch in an LA court

On June 22, the New York Times reported that the streets were saying that Jerry Hall and Rupert Murdoch were headed for a divorce. I didn’t even spend a moment thinking about how curious that was, that the NYT had that story, and not, say, the Murdoch-owned Wall Street Journal. In fact, while other media/business outlets had their own sources confirming the divorce story, most outlets ran with the NYT’s rumor. Now I understand that this was Jerry Hall leaking that sh-t to the rival newspaper loathed the most by her soon-to-be-ex-husband. Jerry waited one week to formally file for divorce:

Jerry Hall has officially filed for divorce from Rupert Murdoch. Hall, 65, filed in the Superior Court of California in L.A. County per court documents obtained by PEOPLE on Friday. She cited irreconcilable differences and is asking for spousal support.

She also does not want the court to be able to award support to her estranged husband. Hall is requesting Murdoch, 91, to pay her attorney’s fees.

In her filing, she says she is “unaware of the full nature and extent of all assets and debts, and will amend this Petition when the information has been ascertained.” The same holds true for community and quasi-community property. Murdoch has 30 days to file a response.

A lawyer for Hall did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment. It is not clear who represents Murdoch to comment on his behalf.

Hall’s filing comes after two sources familiar with the situation told The New York Times last month that Hall and Murdoch were divorcing. Those close to them were reportedly shocked about the breakup.

[From People]

The fact that she filed in an LA court – and not a British court, when they mostly live in England – and the fact that she leaked it the Times, all of that tells me that Jerry possibly has all of her ducks in a row. That she has a plan and she’s executing it. I’m concerned though – obviously, the Murdochs wouldn’t let Jerry into the business whatsoever, and she has no idea what’s still in Rupert Murdoch’s name and what he’s already put in various trusts for his kids. I don’t see Hall as the type to try to make some kind of huge asset-grab. What she wants most of all is for Murdoch to give her a really nice divorce settlement so she can retire in transatlantic peace in a nice London mansion and a cute Manhattan apartment. And maybe a beach house in the Hamptons. I hope she gets that.

Divorces Jerry Hall Rupert Murdoch

NYT: Rupert Murdoch, 91, and Jerry Hall, 65, are headed for a divorce

When Rupert Murdoch was married to Wendi Deng, they lived in New York and it was said, at the time, that Wendi tried to domesticate him and make him more of a cultural elite. That marriage – his third – crashed and burned amid stinging accusations of elder abuse and torrid affairs with Tony Blair. Then in 2016, Murdoch fell in love with someone new: Jerry Hall. They had a seven-week engagement, then a tasteful civil wedding in March 2016, followed by a tasteful church wedding a day later. Murdoch became more London-based (Jerry already lived in London full-time) and much more low-key. While Jerry and Rupert did go out to premieres and big A-list events, it definitely felt like he was in his “rich aristocracy” phase. Now that’s over. Reportedly, Murdoch and Hall are headed for divorce.

Rupert Murdoch, the media titan, and Jerry Hall, the model and actress, are getting divorced, according to two people with knowledge of the decision. The people would speak only anonymously to discuss a personal matter. Bryce Tom, a spokesman for Mr. Murdoch, declined to comment. Representatives for Ms. Hall could not immediately be reached for comment.

Mr. Murdoch’s divorce, his fourth, is unlikely to alter the ownership structure of businesses he holds stakes in, which include parent companies of Fox News and The Wall Street Journal. The Murdoch family’s shares in the companies Mr. Murdoch founded reside in a strictly managed trust. Mr. Murdoch splits voting rights over that trust with his four oldest children — Lachlan, Elisabeth, James and Prudence — and has arranged them so that he can never be outvoted.

Still, the split could reverberate throughout his business empire, which maintains powerful sway in America and abroad through its right-leaning news brands including the Fox News Channel in the United States, The Sun in Britain and Sky News in Australia.

[From The NY Times]

I’m pretty sure that Rupert Murdoch – and Lachlan, the heir-apparent of the empire – learned a lot from the Wendi Deng situation. Deng fought hard to ensure that her two daughters (Grace and Chloe) would have their fair share of the empire and the trust when they came of age. The divorce from Hall will go a lot smoother simply because they didn’t have children together – Hall’s kids are all adults and they’re all Jaggers. I’m pretty sure I heard that Jerry signed a strict-but-beneficial prenup too. That’s probably why no one from MurdochWorld is confirming anything yet – they’re working on a quiet settlement with no drama. While Hall isn’t poor, she needs a nice-sized settlement from Murdoch. I hope she gets it.

Star: Evan Spiegel wants Miranda Kerr to sign a Draconian prenup

FFN_RIJ_CLIVE_DAVIS_PARTY_021416_51970644

This might be the feel-good story of the week. Not all golddiggers are equal! For every Jerry Hall – who managed to get her billionaire down the aisle in less than seven months – there is a Miranda Kerr, who toiling away for something like 10 months… and still no ring! I personally think this is Miranda’s second Golddigger Fail – she was trying to land James Packer back in the day, but it fell apart. And now Mariah Carey has landed Packer, and Miranda is trying to play it like she’ll just wait out her young billionaire boyfriend for however long it takes. Star Magazine says that Evan Spiegel is thinking marriage. But he’s also thinking “ironclad prenup.”

After months of marriage talk, Miranda Kerr was expecting a ring from her boyfriend, Evan Spiegel, but the world’s youngest billionaire, 25, gave her an early draft of an ironclad prenup to read over instead.

“Evan’s lawyers are advising that Miranda walk away with nothing if they get divorced,” dishes a source, noting that the Snapchat CEO is worth a staggering $2 billion compared with the model’s $38 million fortune.

“Miranda started laughing when she heard what Evan was proposing. Then she realized that he was dead-serious. I can only imagine the look on her face!”

And no matter how persuasive Miranda might be, her future fiancé isn’t budging.

Explains the source: “The way Evan sees it, if they’re really going to spend the rest of their lives together, she’ll always be taken care of.”

[From Star Magazine, print edition]

Hey, at least she’s got him on the hook! He wants to marry her, he just wants to make sure that she doesn’t get her hands on all of that Snapchat money in a few years. Personally, I think that if Evan is making such a big deal about the prenup, she just needs to give in a little bit. I’m not saying she should sign something Draconian, but she needs to play up the idea of wanting to have his babies and doesn’t he want his children taken care of no matter what? Of course, maybe that wouldn’t work on a 25-year-old bro like Evan Spiegel. Which is why I do kind of wonder if this whole relationship hasn’t been a waste of Miranda’s time, if her ultimate goal was “marrying a billionaire and getting that cash money.”

Wendi Deng, 47, is apparently getting ‘serious’ with Pres. Vladimir Putin

wenn22461451

When Rupert Murdoch married Wendi Deng in 1999, it was controversial. Murdoch was then a spry 68-year-old and Wendi was 31. At the time, it was his third marriage and her second. Deng has always been accused of trading in lovers and husbands for more money and power, and many side-eyed the fact that Deng had been the “homewrecker” two times in a row, breaking up her first husband’s marriage and then being the “other woman” in Murdoch’s second marriage. When the Deng-Murdoch marriage fell apart back in 2014, there were once again widespread rumors that Deng had already moved on to another more powerful lover, this time the very married Tony Blair. I don’t know what happened between Deng and Blair, but if it was ever something, it’s probably over now. Because Wendi Deng is reportedly dating… Vladimir Putin.

How’s this for a new couple alert? The rumor circulating around the corridors of power — from Washington, D.C., to Europe and Asia — is that Vladimir Putin and Wendi Deng, Rupert Murdoch’s ex-wife, are dating. Reports of the pair have been floating around for years, ever since their respective divorces in 2014 and 2013. One insider close to the powerful leader tells Us Weekly the relationship is “serious.”

The controversial Russian president, 63, was previously married to Lyudmila Putina for 30 years, with whom he shares daughters Maria, 30, and Yekaterina, 29. The Kremlin confirmed their divorce in April 2014. The politician rarely discusses his children, but during an annual news conference in December 2015, he boasted about his daughters to thousands of reporters, before shutting down more personal questions.

“They studied only at Russian universities. I am proud of them. They continue to study and work. My daughters speak three European languages fluently. One of them can even speak one or two Oriental languages. They are making their first steps and are successful,” he told the crowd during the rare moment, before stating: “I never discuss questions related to my family. They are not involved in business or politics. They are not pushing for this.”

Following Lyudmila and Putin’s split, the president was rumored to be dating Russian gymnast Alina Kabaeva. Putin was often featured in European gossip sites after Kabaeva stepped out in early 2015 looking “fuller,” igniting pregnancy rumors. Swiss newspaper Bild then reported that Putin had missed appearances because he had traveled to Switzerland to be by Kabaeva’s side, where she allegedly gave birth to their child at a Swiss hospital in March 2015. The Kremlin has repeatedly denied the rumors.

Deng has yet to be spotted looking romantic with the Russian leader, but was seen boarding her pal Roman Abramovich’s yacht in St. Bart’s on Monday, March 28. Abramovich also happens to be friends with Putin. (According to the Daily Mail, the billionaire Chelsea Football Club owner reportedly gifted the president with a $35 million yacht in January.)

Rupert Murdoch, 84, and Jerry Hall, 59, are engaged after 4 months of dating

FFN_KM_GoldenGlobe_Arr_011016_51944338

We somehow missed covering these Golden Globes photos yesterday, but I am SO HAPPY that I get to use them today. Rupert Murdoch and Jerry Hall have been dating since the fall – the first rumors we heard about them was back in October, and at that point, the relationship was probably a month old or so. Rupert and Jerry (Jupert!) also had some very public date-nights throughout the fall, but the Golden Globes marked their first big red carpet together as a couple. And they looked sort of nice, I think. I mean, it is what it is. Anyway, Jupert is now engaged! It will be Rupert’s fourth marriage, and Jerry’s first (although the common-law thing with Mick Jagger should count).

Rupert Murdoch and Jerry Hall have announced they’re engaged to be married. Murdoch, 84, executive chairman of News Corp. and 21st Century Fox and chairman of the New York Post, and former supermodel Hall, 59, revealed the news in the Births, Marriages and Deaths section of Britain’s The Times.

The announcement read, “Mr Rupert Murdoch, father of Prudence, Elisabeth, Lachlan, James, Grace and Chloe Murdoch, and Miss Jerry Hall, mother of Elizabeth, James, Georgia and Gabriel Jagger, are delighted to announce their engagement.”

The couple has been dating since late summer. It’s the fourth marriage for Murdoch. Hall was in a relationship with Mick Jagger for 23 years. It’s her first marriage.

Jerry Hall on Plastic Surgery: Why make yourself look a grotesque caricature of yourself? | celebrity quotes

On how she hates plastic surgery:

“It’s so idiotic when they risk their lives to have surgery. Every time you have anesthesia, you’re killing a lot of brain cells — why would you do that? You could get infections, you could die. Why make yourself look a grotesque caricature of yourself? They don’t fool anyone. They look like pathetic, insecure creatures. I loathe the whole thing. I don’t mean to be critical, and I understand that actresses feel the pressure in Hollywood, they have to do it. I respect that and I feel sorry for them that they have to do it. But for normal women to do it? If men want to leave their wife for a 19-year-old, they’re gonna do it anyway. All the facelifts and botox in the world isn’t going to change that guy, you know?”

… says 58 year-old Jerry in Hello Magazine.
