Saoirse Ronan ‘gagged’ Paul Mescal & Eddie Redmayne in a viral Graham Norton clip

Over the weekend, Graham Norton had a really great guest lineup on his show: Denzel Washington, Paul Mescal, Eddie Redmaybe and Saoirse Ronan. Denzel and all the younger actors. Incidentally, Denzel seems to love going on Graham Norton – every time they send Denzel to the UK to promote his films, he must ask to go on Graham’s show. He probably enjoys the vibe and that everything isn’t rehearsed. Speaking of, during one part of the show, Eddie explained his training for The Day of the Jackal (he plays the hired hit man the Jackal) and he described how his trainer told him he could use his phone as a weapon during an attack. Redmayne joked: “Who is actually going to think about that? If someone actually attacked me, I’m not going to go ‘phone.’” Mescal and Graham joked about it too, then Ronan said: “That’s what girls have to think about all the time.”

The tweet is right, Saoirse absolutely gagged them. But it’s funny to see people saying sh-t like “this is why Paul Mescal should be canceled!” While Eddie, Graham and Paul were acting like boneheads, they absolutely STFU when Saoirse said that and they realized why they were wrong immediately. You can see it dawn on Paul and Eddie’s faces immediately: “oh sh-t, she’s right.” I haven’t seen what happened after that though – what did Denzel say, because it looks like he was about to praise Saoirse for killing the vibe so spectacularly.

Ana de Armas in Louis Vuitton at the SAGs: lovely or just kind of boring?

Ana de Armas is a brand ambassador for Louis Vuitton, and I believe that most of her looks are custom-made by the atelier. Which means that she doesn’t have to wear most of the crap they throw down the runway. But if she’s getting custom looks, don’t you think they should be more… noteworthy? I don’t know. She wore this LV look to last night’s SAGs and while the silhouette is generally fine and the style is okay, I just dislike this? The detail on the straps bug me. Anyway, while Ana has been nominated for lead actress awards across the board, she’s not winning anything for Blonde. Thank god.

Danielle Deadwyler in Louis Vuitton. I like this? Danielle has been getting some really good looks during the awards season. I like this LV better than Ana’s.

I don’t think Barry Keoghan has worn a traditional black-and-white tuxedo the entire awards season, bless him. I like that he’s mixing it up. Lovely guy. He seems to enjoy being at the Hollywood award shows, he was cozying up to the EEAAO people, especially Jamie Lee Curtis.

Speaking of refusing to wear a traditional tux, here’s Eddie Redmayne in Saint Laurent. He looks wonderful!

Eddie Redmayne: It was a mistake to do ‘The Danish Girl’, ‘I wouldn’t take it on now’

Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene of Monaco present gifts to the disadvantaged at the Monegasque Red Cross office

Eddie Redmayne is currently doing press in the UK because he’s about to star in a West End revival of Cabaret. He’s playing the Emcee, the role made famous by Joel Grey in the film (Grey won an Oscar). Alan Cumming also won a Tony for the same role in the Broadway revival in the 1990s (which also originated in the West End). It’s a great role. This current revival has been built around Redmayne and Jessie Buckley as Sally Bowles. Redmayne is the biggest name, given that he’s won a slew of awards over his career already, including an Oscar.

As Redmayne was doing press for Cabaret, he was asked about his Oscar-nominated performance in The Danish Girl, where he played Lili, the first person to ever undergo gender confirmation surgery. While Eddie – at the time – tried to be very respectful of playing a transgender character, he is still a cisgender man and of course there was pushback and criticism at the time. The criticism has only grown in the six years since the film’s release. And Eddie apparently still feels bad about it.

Eddie Redmayne says taking on his Academy Award-nominated role as a trans character in the 2015 film The Danish Girl was a mistake. Redmayne, who played transgender artist Lili Elbe in the film, said he wouldn’t take that job if it was offered to him now. The role won him a Best Actor nomination.

Critics have complained that the role should have gone to a trans actress. Redmayne heard that and now agrees. Redmayne spoke to The Times of London about the issue while touting his stage performance in an upcoming version of Cabaret.

“No, I wouldn’t take it on now. I made that film with the best intentions, but I think it was a mistake,” he said. “The bigger discussion about the frustrations around casting is because many people don’t have a chair at the table. There must be a leveling, otherwise we are going to carry on having these debates.”

As for playing the Emcee in Cabaret, “I see him as a survivor who can shape-shift himself out of every situation.” The script of Cabaret doesn’t put a label on the Emcee, but the character is often played by LGBT actors, so Redmayne’s casting has come in for criticism. “Of all the characters I’ve ever read, this one defies pigeonholing. I would ask people to come and see it before casting judgment,” he says firmly.

[From Deadline & The Sunday Times]

I remember covering The Danish Girl issues at the time, and while Redmayne absolutely showed the trans community respect and he came into it wanting to honor Lili and the community, there was still a lot of justified pushback at the time. Redmayne always acknowledged that too, and he’s expressed his qualms for years. I appreciate that he says now that he wouldn’t do it again. There are larger problems though, problems with Hollywood and how they cast roles, and problems with empowering anti-trans voices. And yes, it’s a little bit crazy that once again, the cisgender straight guy was cast in a role usually given to LGBTQ actors (the Emcee).

Rupert Murdoch, 84, and Jerry Hall, 59, are engaged after 4 months of dating

FFN_KM_GoldenGlobe_Arr_011016_51944338

We somehow missed covering these Golden Globes photos yesterday, but I am SO HAPPY that I get to use them today. Rupert Murdoch and Jerry Hall have been dating since the fall – the first rumors we heard about them was back in October, and at that point, the relationship was probably a month old or so. Rupert and Jerry (Jupert!) also had some very public date-nights throughout the fall, but the Golden Globes marked their first big red carpet together as a couple. And they looked sort of nice, I think. I mean, it is what it is. Anyway, Jupert is now engaged! It will be Rupert’s fourth marriage, and Jerry’s first (although the common-law thing with Mick Jagger should count).

Rupert Murdoch and Jerry Hall have announced they’re engaged to be married. Murdoch, 84, executive chairman of News Corp. and 21st Century Fox and chairman of the New York Post, and former supermodel Hall, 59, revealed the news in the Births, Marriages and Deaths section of Britain’s The Times.

The announcement read, “Mr Rupert Murdoch, father of Prudence, Elisabeth, Lachlan, James, Grace and Chloe Murdoch, and Miss Jerry Hall, mother of Elizabeth, James, Georgia and Gabriel Jagger, are delighted to announce their engagement.”

The couple has been dating since late summer. It’s the fourth marriage for Murdoch. Hall was in a relationship with Mick Jagger for 23 years. It’s her first marriage.

Benedict Cumberbatch thinks selfies are ‘a tragic waste of engagement’

bendy1

I don’t know how I missed this (because I have Cumber-exhaustion?), but Benedict Cumberbatch has a nice feature in the new issue of DuJour Magazine, the same issue with Angelina Jolie and Jack O’Connell on the cover. I’m including the DuJour photos in this post – they’re nice, but they were taken after The Terrible Haircut, so they’re not as hot as they should have been. You can read DuJour’s little interview with Benedict here – he’s just talking about Alan Turing, blah, etc. He once again compared the Bletchley group to The Avengers, which is still a funny comparison. It makes him sound like a Marvel wannabe.

Let’s see, what else? Benedict is scheduled to appear at the London Evening Standard Theatre Awards on Sunday night. I’m assuming he’ll shill a bit for his upcoming production of Hamlet next year, plus he’s supporting many of his friends in the theatre. Tom Hiddleston is nominated (although who knows if he’ll come), plus Helen Mirren, Carey Mulligan, Eddie Redmayne, Idris Elba and many more are scheduled to appear. And in case that isn’t oversaturated enough, on Monday night, Benedict will attend the world premiere (in London) of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.

Meanwhile, USA Today keeps releasing quotes from an interview they must have done with Benedict when he was in NYC last week. Go here to read the latest. There are some nice quotes from some of his coworkers (Julianne Nicholson adores him). When he talks about walking the TIG red carpet with Sophie Hunter, he says: “I wanted her to enjoy it. It was sort of a test run or something of that ilk. We’re going to be doing this for our whole lives, so this is what it’s going to be like. She was very cool with it and loved it.” Hm. I don’t even know what to say about this stuff anymore. He also calls the selfie obsession “a tragic waste of engagement…Enjoy the moment. Do something more worthwhile with your time, anything. Stare out the window and think about life.”

Benedict Cumberbatch: Sophie Hunter ‘loves me back to the same degree’

wenn21937049

This year, I’m thankful that the world has been fully and utterly ‘Batched and that so many people are now “in” on the Otter King aka Benedict Cumberbatch. I’m also thankful for Cumby’s Oscar campaign, because the past month of gossip would have been pretty dead without it. But I also hope – for his sake and for mine – that Benedict tones it down. Soon. He is this year’s Jennifer Lawrence/Anne Hathaway. He is everywhere. He is oversaturated. Take this Hello Magazine interview – I believe Benedict really spoke to Hello, but I had to check some of these quotes to make sure that they weren’t duplicates from his People Mag interview. There are some similar quotes, for sure, but I think Benedict literally has talking points that he tries to “hit” in all of the magazine interviews. Some highlights:

On his engagementIt’s an amazing thing to find somebody you love. It’s amazing to find somebody you love at all, let alone somebody who loves you back and to the same degree. And if that is amazing, well, considering how busy both Sophie and I are, it’s a minor miracle that we met each other at all in the way we did. To have Sophie in my life is something I am incredibly grateful for and very excited about. It’s a bit of a golden moment for me right now and I am loving it. I think I’ll be having a very private moment.

Does Sophie need to worry about the legendary Cumberbitches?I wish people wouldn’t call them that. My fans are incredibly smart and expressive people and Cumberbitches was a name that some of them thought to call themselves early and it just caught on. But what they really are is a bunch of self-regulating, intelligent and determined young people – or if they’re not young, they’re young in spirit. And by the way, they come from both sexes, too. I’m sure they’ll get over my being engaged – they’re smart, they’ll get used to the idea.

On his engagement announcementI would have done that even if I had not been in this strange, heightened position that I am of being a famous actor. It was really an announcement to my friends and family, because, believe me, as many people as I told after the moment, I couldn’t spend all my time on the phone – I had to get back to playing Richard III. So this was, for me, a standard English way of letting people know about the situation and a way of trying to normalise something that is deeply personal to me.

On his busy scheduleIt’s been such an embarrassment of riches coming my way that it’s been very, very hard to turn down. Which is quite something for me because I am actually incredibly lazy and I love nothing better than to kick back, see friends and family and just go on a few holidays. But it is a crazy schedule I have sometimes and right now is just the most bizarre it’s ever been. The next couple of weeks are going to be incredibly busy; to tell you the truth I’m terrified about them.

He quit smoking and is chewing gumI’ve given up smoking. Although I shouldn’t say that, because if I ever have a cigarette again it’ll be all over the place. ‘Oh, he lied.’ But, touch wood, I haven’t smoked for a month now and it’s really helping. I try to eat healthy, I try not to each late at night – although that’s hard right now with the yo-yoing all over the world – and it really helps that I have a lot of great people around me to try to check that I’m doing well.

Is he competing with Eddie RedmayneIt’s not a rivalry, it’s a friendship. I will be the first person on my feet if Eddie wins any of the prizes he will rightfully be nominated for – I will be front and centre, screaming, clapping and delighting in any accolade that is thrown his way. People can try to whip it up between us all they like – Eddie and I will just stand back and laugh at you all.

[From Hello Magazine, print edition, December 1, 2014]

I think Eddie and Bendy used to be quite friendly, with Eddie as something like a little brother. But I think Benedict was and is afraid that Eddie might be running a more effective Oscar campaign.

As for all of the engagement stuff… God, Benedict. Just… STAHP. How many times did he use the word “amazing”? Let’s unpack it – “It’s amazing to find somebody you love at all, let alone somebody who loves you back and to the same degree.” Maybe Sophie is super-private and very self-contained, but I’m not really getting a “demonstrative loved-up” feel from them. Their relationship/engagement really does feel like two cold, posh English people deciding to settle down into a marriage of convenience. But I was complaining about how he was treating Sophie (in the press) as simply an extension of himself, so at least he’s now referring to her as her own person. “And if that is amazing, well, considering how busy both Sophie and I are…” Is she working now? I’m really asking.

Benedict Cumberbatch wins ‘Hollywood Actor Award at the HFAs: yay?

wenn21928210

Wow, there was A LOT of Benedict Cumberbatch at the Hollywood Film Awards last night. Not only did Benedict win The Hollywood Actor Award for The Imitation Game, but producers cut to him throughout the evening and Bendy was featured in several “winner” packages. Bendy did not attend the HFAs with his lover Sophie Hunter though. From what I could see of his table, he sat with Harvey Weinstein, Keira Knightley and his publicist. His publicist looked exhausted. I feel you, girl.

As for how Bendy looked… I’m getting tired of yelling about his stupid haircut, so whatever. I think he’s trying to grow it out and hopefully, fingers crossed, we’ll have Cumbercurls by the Golden Globes/SAGs. I do like his new suit – at least it’s new to me, I don’t think I’ve seen this suit before. Ben looked grumpy throughout most of the show, but he did break into a smile a few times. Here’s Bendy’s speech:

It occurred to me as I was watching Benedict’s speech and how he carried himself last night that Benedict isn’t playing the same kind of Oscar campaign as Eddie Redmayne. Redmayne is doing the “British outsider, young talent in a breakthrough role” campaign. Benedict is running more of an “established actor doing consistently award-winning work for years” campaign. Like, I remember the (successful) campaign Harvey Weinstein waged on behalf of Colin Firth for The King’s Speech. That’s what Benedict’s campaign now reminds me of. He’s doing the Firth Model. That plays a bit better, I think.

I’m including photos of Bendy from the HFA red carpet, plus some pics of Bendy at LAX.
