Kevin Ware leg injury during the NCAA Tournament (VIDEO)
It was a bittersweet day for Louisville. They celebrated a 85-63 victory over Duke, but they also wept for their teammate and friend, Kevin Ware, who suffered a gruesome leg injury just before the half.
Ware landed wrong on his foot and his leg snapped in an instant. It was reminiscent of the Joe Theismann leg injury in 1985. Ware’s leg was broken in two midway, between his ankle and his knee. He fell to the ground and his Louisville teammates drew back in horror once they caught a glimpse of his leg.
Coach Pitino said after Kevin Ware’s leg injury the Louisville sophomore’s reaction was positive, and kind of mind blowing. ”Basically, the bone popped out of the skin. It broke in two spots. The bone’s 6 inches out of his leg and all he’s yelling is, ‘Win the game, win the game.’ I’ve not seen that in my life. Pretty special young man.”
Coach Pitino and Kevin Ware’s teammates cried as he was carted off the court.
“We won this for him,” Pitino said. ”We were all choked up with emotion for him. We’ll get him back to normal. We’ve got great doctors, great trainers. We talked about it every timeout, `Get Kevin home.”’
Chane Behanan, teammate and one of Kevin Ware’s best friends, says he spoke with Ware before being taken to the hospital. ”He said ‘Don’t worry about me, I’m good, I’ll have my surgery tonight. Go win it for me.’”
Joe Theismann spoke with USA Today about Ware’s leg injury:
“My world just came to a complete stop, it was just a horrible, horrible thing to see happen — I hate to see anybody have an injury that is anywhere near anything like I went through. All of a sudden, it’s, ‘Oh my God!’ It’s a terrible, terrible to see. My prayers go out to him, my heart goes out to him. I know what his family is going through. I have every belief that he’s going to be back and better than he was.”
Ware is being treated at a hospital and is said to be resting comfortably.
