Duchess Kate is ‘filled with horror’ whenever William rides his Ducati

wenn23059672

TOO MUCH HAIR. Here are even more photos of Prince William and Duchess Kate, also known as the Earl and Countess of Strathearn while in Scotland, which is where they are right now. They’re doing a day-trip to Dundee where they’re packing in like five or six events into one 24-hour period. By most reports, Prince George and Princess Charlotte did not fly out to Scotland with Will and Kate. The babies either were left with Nanny Maria or Carole Middleton (or both?), maybe in Berkshire, maybe in London, maybe at Anmer Hall. Who knows?

We do know that Will & Kate spent the night at St. Andrews, which is where they fell in love, at university. Although we know now – through the Duchess’s hagiographer Katie Nicholl – that Kate and William met before university and Kate basically threw herself into William’s path with all of her might once they got to St. Andrews. Anyway, Will and Kate stayed at the Old Course Hotel, in a room that goes for $470 a night. Maybe it was nice for them to have a little getaway from the kids. Meanwhile, this happened:

A local named Fearghas Simpson, 28, asked the Duchess if William still took his Ducati motorbike, which costs £20,000 and can go from 0-60mph in 2.5 seconds, out for a spin. The Prince was last seen riding the 190mph machine the night before the Royal Wedding in 2011.

Kate, who showcased a healthy glow and accessorised her look with coordinating blue drop earrings, a simple black clutch bag and suede gloves, replied: ‘He’s still riding it. It always fills me with horror when he goes out on it‎. I’m terrified. Hopefully, I’m going to keep George off it.’

[From The Daily Mail]

Huh… I didn’t even remember that William had/has a Ducati and I certainly didn’t know he still rides it. William sure loves that kind of stuff, flying helicopters, riding motorcycles, etc. It IS horrifying when you think about Will riding his Ducati, especially considering his mother died in one of the most famous car accidents in history. Pretty dangerous.

Oh, and I have the IDs on the boots and the clutch too. Kate paired her bespoke Christopher Kane coat with the same Aquatalia boots she’s worn before, plus a Stuart Weitzman clutch. She’s also wearing her sapphire-and-diamond earrings, the ones that match her ring.

Carole Middleton ‘is a snobbish social climber,’ claims Carole’s goddaughter

FFN_Celebs_Wimbledon_FFUK_062714_51463355

This is very, very interesting. A woman named Joanne Callen has given a lengthy and fascinating interview to The Daily Mail, all about her godmother Carole Middleton. Callen and Middleton are related – Joanne’s mother and Carole are first cousins, which makes Joanne and Duchess Kate second cousins. Apparently, the families grew up together and were very, very close but that all changed when Kate married William. Joanne says Carole phased out her peasant relations, even going so far as to cut out shady Uncle Gary Goldsmith. You can read the full piece here and here are the most interesting parts:

Few will have heard of the Callens, but they and the Middletons are close family. Or, rather, they were. Because now it seems that some in Joanne’s family are deeply disappointed with their more illustrious cousins – and not only because the wedding was the last they ever saw of Kate. In the eyes of Joanne, at least, Carole has become too grand to care about Joanne’s family.
Invitations to family occasions have gone unanswered, elderly relatives remain unvisited. Carole no longer bothers with her godchild. The Callens have never even met Prince George.

Joanne’s mother, Alison, is Carole Middleton’s first cousin. So close were the pair that they grew up almost as sisters. And later their families shared Christmases and holidays. Yet in the three years since the wedding, Joanne says, the Middletons have steadily cut her side of the family adrift. Carole’s colourful brother Gary, her only sibling, might well sympathise. Because, according to Joanne, he too has now been so comprehensively ‘dropped’, that his sister refuses to be seen in his company.

‘When I was a child Carole was really good to me,’ she explains. ‘She was a very good mother, a lovely godmother, and I liked her. But she has always been a social climber and now I feel she is snobbish. She behaves as if we are not good enough for her now – so she does not need to respond to us or have any care. At the end of the day, I’m not sure what the word goddaughter means any more. Carole doesn’t reply to invitations and doesn’t turn up at any family events. She claims that she won’t go anywhere where Gary is but I think she is just making excuses. The real reason is that she is above us now. We’re not in her social circle. It’s as if we are not good enough now and she’s embarrassed by us. She is now even grander than the Queen.’

Joanne continues: ‘I was so excited when George was born. I watched Kate leaving the hospital looking lovely and have read about him in lots of newspapers and magazines. But none of the family has met him and we have barely seen Carole since the wedding.’

But it is the way Carole has behaved towards Joanne’s grandparents, Ruth 81 and Ivor, 86, who live barely 30 miles away from her in the suburban town of Ruislip, Middlesex, that she seems to find particularly upsetting. Joanne says Carole has twice promised to introduce the grandparents – Carole’s aunt and uncle – to George but they still have not seen him. In the run-up to last Christmas, Carole rang Ruth and offered to send a car to pick them up. Ruth promptly went out to buy a present for George, but the car never came.

‘Carole said a car would pick them up in the next couple of weeks to meet Prince George,’ says Joanne. ‘She said that she would call later and organise a time and a date. So my grandmother went out and bought George an outfit. When I asked her later if she had met George, she made an excuse for them saying, “They must be very busy.” But I felt terrible for her because she had gone out and bought a gift for him and was so excited about meeting him – not because he was Prince George but because he was family. I still feel sad thinking of them sitting there waiting for the call with the present all wrapped up waiting for them. Then Christmas came and it obviously wasn’t going to happen. Our family is deeply saddened. There is no need to upset anybody. She should certainly have a good deal more respect for Ruth and Ivor.’

‘I suppose Carole may feel that the Palace doesn’t want her to see her wider family regularly now she is grandmother to the future King. Perhaps she is complying with what she thinks is their wish but it doesn’t make it easier.’

It is not just Carole’s behaviour towards her aunt and uncle, Ruth and Ivor, that has caused offence. When Joanne’s sister Catherine celebrated her wedding at the 18th Century Hampton Court House in Surrey last month, none of the Middletons attended or sent presents.

[From The Daily Mail]

Joanna also tells a long story about how Carole didn’t want her brother, Gary Goldsmith (who financed most of the Middleton adventures before the royal wedding), to sit with the family during the wedding. In case you think that Joanne is just a grumpy relative cashing in on some tenuous royal connection, she details how close she was to the Middleton family and it really does sound like they were a very intertwined and close-knit group. But no more.

Does Carole think she’s “grander than the Queen”? Eh. I think Carole is a massive social climber who sunk lots of money, time and effort into the massive gamble of getting her daughter to land Prince William. And the gamble paid off after nine years and all of the Middletons are reveling in their rewards. And yes, I believe that Carole totally cut out her peasant relations. But what stuns me is that Dodgy Uncle Gary is no longer welcome around the Middletons. None of this would have been possible without Gary – I’ve long believed he financed a major part of the Middletons’ lifestyle and Kate’s pursuit of William.

Duchess Kate has always been ‘Princess Kate’ & royal reporters are freaking out

A few weeks ago, there was a minor kerfuffle that quickly turned into a major royal kerfuffle. Prince William had filled out his newborn son’s birth certificate, and William identified Kate (HRH Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge) as “Princess of the United Kingdom”. Considering that St. James Palace and Buckingham Palace had always insisted that Kate was in fact NOT a princess up until that point, there were a lot of aggravated royal reporters and royal reporters. My explanation seemed to be the reasoning used by the Palace – Kate is a “princess” in the sense that she can adopt William’s title and become Princess William of Wales. At the end of the day, of course it does not matter at all. But now the royal reporters – one in particular – are having some kind of meltdown.

Richard Palmer of The Daily Express has written a column which I think qualifies as a “screed”. You can read the whole epic-ness here. His basic thesis is that Buckingham Palace and St. James Palace actively lied about Kate’s royal titles for the past few years, and that Buckingham Palace should apologize about it. Some highlights:

Buckingham Palace says it has known since the royal wedding that Kate is a princess but refuses to explain why it spent two years insisting she wasn’t. I’ll set out now what the palace says, as this is still a point causing confusion amongst readers, then I’ll explain why I believe the last sentence of this official response from the Queen’s office is highly misleading, if not downright untrue, following my earlier story about how Prince William surprised the world by describing his wife’s occupation as Princess of the United Kingdom.

When he did so, it made headlines around the world because for two years the UK and international media had been told she wasn’t a princess. Challenged by the Daily Express, Buckingham Palace promised to look into it.

In its response, the palace now says this: “Upon marriage to HRH Prince William of Wales, Catherine Middleton was entitled to use the name of her husband, Princess William of Wales, as the wife of a Royal Prince. On the occasion of their wedding, the Queen conferred on Prince William the title of HRH the Duke Cambridge and the couple became known as TRHs the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. So the Duchess of Cambridge has since her wedding day been a princess, and it was for this reason that “Princess of the United Kingdom” was noted on the registration of her son, Prince George of Cambridge. This has been the understanding of Buckingham Palace from the outset. We will not be commenting further on this matter.”

It’s that last sentence that troubles me. Because on April 29, 2011, the day of the royal wedding, a team of press officers acting for Buckingham Palace, Clarence House, and St. James’s Palace briefed the world’s media outside Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace that, as a royal duchess, Kate was not a princess. Incredulous reporters from around the world asked: “But surely the wife of a prince is a princess, whatever other titles she has? “Apparently not. It’s not as simple as that,” the press officers said in turn. “The wife of a prince doesn’t automatically become a princess if she’s given another title.”

They said this was the advice they had received from the Queen’s office at Buckingham Palace. And as the Queen is what is known as the Fount of Honour, she is the final arbiter on these things. But in the days following the wedding this view was challenged by some veteran royal watchers who insisted that, although a royal duchess title is a more senior title than plain old Princess William, Kate had the right to use both and enjoyed the rank of a Princess. When I went back to William and Kate’s press office, other authorities, and a couple of the press officers I had spoken to on royal wedding day, there was a swift passing of the buck: the information had come from Buckingham Palace and I should speak to them because they were the authority on this, I was told.

So three times I did speak to a spokesman for the Queen, who assured me with growing exasperation that all those royal watchers were wrong and the Duchess of Cambridge was in no way, shape or form a princess. He also insisted that, contrary to what they claimed, the Queen Mother, Countess of Wessex, and Sarah, Duchess of York had never been princesses either.

He was wrong, plain wrong, I now realise. But faced with conflicting claims, I chose to go with what I was told was the ultimate authority on these matters: someone speaking on behalf of the Queen. Had the press officers been told what to say to stop the press christening her Princess Kate, did a private secretary give incorrect information to the press officers, or had they simply miscontrued? Buckingham Palace won’t say.

…The person I spoke to most about all of this is actually one of the most helpful people on royal history and ceremony and I don’t want to see him scapegoated for the palace’s collective failure. I just want Buckingham Palace as an instituton to apologise and say: sorry, we got it wrong. We all make mistakes – like all reporters, I certainly have – but, unfortunately, the Royal Household seems institutionally incapable of admitting it has ever got anything wrong. Mistakes and misinformation diminish the standing and authority of the Queen but a failure to admit to them does even more damage.

[From The Express]

Basically, the guy is calling out Buckingham Palace’s lackeys (or as Diana called them, “The Men in Grey”) for lying about Kate’s title this whole time. But here’s the thing: I don’t think Buckingham Palace was lying. I think the Queen very purposefully did not give Kate a “princess” title and the Queen made sure her people told the press that Kate was only supposed to be referred to as “the Duchess of Cambridge” and never “Princess Catherine” or “Princess William”. And I think William was pissed off about that. I think William wanted Kate to be considered a princess, and he had been fighting for Kate to get a princess title for years. So William gave her a “princess” title on Prince George’s birth certificate and rather than have some royal family kerfuffle, Buckingham Palace merely submitted to William’s princess scheme. Doesn’t that make more sense?
