Duchess Kate in a Catherine Walker coatdress at St. Paul’s: cute or cloying?

wenn24552122

Here are some photos of the Duchess of Cambridge and other royals today at St. Paul’s Cathedral. They attended a service of thanksgiving for Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday, which is funny because today is actually the Duke of Edinburgh’s 95th birthday. But today is the start of a three-day celebration for the Queen, her birthday and her historic reign. In addition to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, this church service was also attended by the York princesses, Prince Harry, the Prince of Wales, the Countess of Wessex, the Duke of York, the Princess Royal, the Duchess of Cornwall, Zara Phillips, Tony Blair, David Cameron and John Major.

While the Queen wore a bright yellow, Kate decided on a more muted palate. She chose this light blue Catherine Walker coatdress, because Kate is obsessed with coatdresses. The white, lacy lattice-work down the front is not my cup of tea, but I think the look is appropriate for a morning church service. The thing that bugs me most of all is that I believe with all my heart that Kate had the hem raised so she could show off more leg, and whomever did it made a hash of it – look at how uneven that looks! Kate’s hat is by Jane Taylor, and Kate paired the ensemble with a pair of much-beloved nude heels. I have to say… the York princesses looked fantastic this morning. The Duke of York, not so much.

Duchess Kate wears decade-old boots, skinny jeans for Bhutan hike: cute?

It’s been said before, but it’s worth repeating: the Duchess of Cambridge is at her best when she gets to do something athletic. When the photo-op involves running, hiking or being sporty, she does well. So these photos are totally fine with me – William and Kate took a three-hour hike today in Bhutan. It was an uphill climb/hike to the Tiger’s Nest monastery built into a clifftop. It’s one of the biggest tourist sites in Bhutan, which brings me to another point that a lot of the royal reporters have been making… just like Will and Kate’s Australia/New Zealand tour two years ago, this tour has seemingly involved a lot of tourist activities, almost like this is a government-sponsored vacation. Of course Will and Kate wanted to see the Tiger’s Nest and of course they enjoyed themselves. But don’t call it a royal tour, you know? Call it what it is: a vacation.

For the hours-long hike, Kate chose a decent ensemble. Meaning, at least she didn’t attempt a lengthy hike in wedges or heels. She actually pulled out some brown Penelope Chilvers boots which she’s had in her closet for more than a decade. Kate was actually wearing these boots in one of her most famous college-era photos (go here to see). The boots cost £475. She paired her old boots with skinny jeans (that likely have some stretch), a simple white blouse and the £495 Nubuck vest/waistcoat. I don’t understand why a three-hour hike wouldn’t have been a perfect moment for a ponytail, but then again, I’m not a duchess.

Apparently, as they were hiking, Kate joked that they were “burning off the curry.” The Daily Mail also points out that William was working up a sweat but that Kate is so sporty that she was breezing through the hike.

I love that the @KensingtonRoyal Twitter manager posted the butt shot like that was the big take-away image from the hike.

Duchess Kate is ‘filled with horror’ whenever William rides his Ducati

wenn23059672

TOO MUCH HAIR. Here are even more photos of Prince William and Duchess Kate, also known as the Earl and Countess of Strathearn while in Scotland, which is where they are right now. They’re doing a day-trip to Dundee where they’re packing in like five or six events into one 24-hour period. By most reports, Prince George and Princess Charlotte did not fly out to Scotland with Will and Kate. The babies either were left with Nanny Maria or Carole Middleton (or both?), maybe in Berkshire, maybe in London, maybe at Anmer Hall. Who knows?

We do know that Will & Kate spent the night at St. Andrews, which is where they fell in love, at university. Although we know now – through the Duchess’s hagiographer Katie Nicholl – that Kate and William met before university and Kate basically threw herself into William’s path with all of her might once they got to St. Andrews. Anyway, Will and Kate stayed at the Old Course Hotel, in a room that goes for $470 a night. Maybe it was nice for them to have a little getaway from the kids. Meanwhile, this happened:

A local named Fearghas Simpson, 28, asked the Duchess if William still took his Ducati motorbike, which costs £20,000 and can go from 0-60mph in 2.5 seconds, out for a spin. The Prince was last seen riding the 190mph machine the night before the Royal Wedding in 2011.

Kate, who showcased a healthy glow and accessorised her look with coordinating blue drop earrings, a simple black clutch bag and suede gloves, replied: ‘He’s still riding it. It always fills me with horror when he goes out on it‎. I’m terrified. Hopefully, I’m going to keep George off it.’

[From The Daily Mail]

Huh… I didn’t even remember that William had/has a Ducati and I certainly didn’t know he still rides it. William sure loves that kind of stuff, flying helicopters, riding motorcycles, etc. It IS horrifying when you think about Will riding his Ducati, especially considering his mother died in one of the most famous car accidents in history. Pretty dangerous.

Oh, and I have the IDs on the boots and the clutch too. Kate paired her bespoke Christopher Kane coat with the same Aquatalia boots she’s worn before, plus a Stuart Weitzman clutch. She’s also wearing her sapphire-and-diamond earrings, the ones that match her ring.

Daily Mail: Carole & Michael Middleton will get titles when Charles is king

I know I’m going to catch hell for this, but for my money, Carole Middleton is a much better dresser than either of her daughters. Carole manages to look occasion-appropriate and age-appropriate almost always. If I had to complain about anything, it’s that she sometimes veers into looks that are “too young” but even then… she’s a pretty spry, youthful 60 year old, so she pulls it off most of the time. While Duchess Kate wore a conservative red dress to Wimbledon yesterday, Carole came out in this utterly adorable, summery shirtdress. THIS is what Kate should have worn. It’s lovely.

Ever since then-Kate Middleton married Prince William, there’s been speculation as to whether the Middletons – Carole and Michael – will be given some kind of title. Because it’s seen as unseemly in some circles that the mother of a future queen and grandmother of a future king would be an un-titled commoner. Well, now Daily Mail gossip guy Ephrain Hardcastle (my DM gossip name would be Kaisleigh Biscuitthrust) claims that Carole and Michael will definitely get a title… when Charles is king.

Whither the status of Michael Middleton, father of future Queen Kate, grandfather of future King George? Royals normally marry each other, or someone from the nobility with titles and a distinguished pedigree, otherwise they improve the rank of incomers. Princess Margaret’s untitled husband, Antony Armstrong-Jones, was ennobled as Earl of Snowdon to give their children titles.

So it is likely that Michael Middleton will be offered an earldom, making his wife Carole a countess, his son, James, a viscount and his daughter, Pippa, a lady. But there’s no rush.

‘Michael’s still getting used to having a coat of arms, so the expectation is that the earldom might be offered as part of a tranche of appointments made when Charles becomes king,’ a source suggests.

[From The Daily Mail]

Yes, it’s good to wait. It’s also possible that the royals are waiting to see if the Middletons’ marriage survives much longer. I think Carole and Michael did hit a rough patch, but Carole thankfully realized that her place isn’t micromanaging her daughter’s life. Right? Hopefully. Maybe. Who knows?

Incidentally, we learned something new about Prince George and what he calls Carole and Queen Elizabeth. Apparently, George calls Carole “grandma” and he calls the Queen “nanny”. Will and Harry call their grandmother “Granny”. Just FYI.

Mad Men’s final season begins with ‘staches, waitresses & Peggy Lee

wenn22330543

The last half of Mad Men’s final season premiered last night on AMC. And if you were hoping for some huge change, we didn’t get it. But we did get several surreal moments that made everything seem off-kilter, tenuous, Twilight Zone-esque. Matthew Weiner spoke to Vanity Fair about the premiere here, and he uses “Twilight Zone” as a reference too. Anyway, I just had some random thoughts…

The Waitress. She was played by Elizabeth Reaser, although the way she was shot at first gave the impression that she was some kind of hybrid of actresses Maggie Siff (who played Rachel Menken) and Rosemarie DeWitt (who played Don’s mistress Midge in the first season). That’s Don’s old type – sort of mysterious, brunette, intelligent eyes. But… I loathe Elizabeth Reaser. I think she’s a terrible actress every time I see her. Once I realized it was her, I was all, “Seriously? Her?”

The Fur. That was one of the best and weirdest episode openings ever, Don telling that pretty girl what to do with the fur coat. Even Ted Olsen seems to have perked up because of the casting sessions for the fur campaign.

Don’s Single Life. I’m fine with him having a little black book full of the phone numbers of stewardesses, models, actresses, waitresses and whoever else. I just hope he doesn’t marry any of those silly women.

Rachel Menken/Rachel Katz. Don’t first great love affair from Season 1 passed away. He dreamt of her just a few days after she died of lukemia. His reaction – and Hamm’s acting as he entered the apartment where Rachel’s family was sitting shiva – was particularly emotional and moving. It’s the same kind of deep grief he had when Anna Draper passed away.

The ‘Staches. The episode apparently took place in April 1970, less than a year since the last episode of Part 1. Why are there suddenly so many ‘staches?

Pete Campbell. I know he’s no one’s favorite character, but I adore the evolution of Pete. He was so happy and sunny in California and but now that he’s back in New York, parts of the old Pete have returned. But he’s still figuring out a way to be nicer to his coworkers.

Peggy Goes On A Date. Is that supposed to be some kind of signal that the people around Peggy are worried that she’s in her early 30s and still not married? Is she the poor single girl who gets set up on blind dates by her subordinates? Is she prickly about it? She loved being described as “fearless” – because who doesn’t want to see themselves that way? – but in reality and in the cold, hungover morning, we see who she really is: a cynic.

Joan Is Rich. Joan is also the victim of some really awful sexual harassment. I was waiting for her to strike back in classic Joan Holloway style. I wanted her to slap those McCann douchebros in their bro-faces. Instead, Joan took it out on Peggy (to be fair, Peggy absolutely said the wrong thing) and then drowned her sorrows in shopping. Because Joan is too rich to care about douchebros, right?

Ken Cosgrove Gets Fired. I actually really like the Ken Cosgrove character and I like that there’s someone in that office who really doesn’t have major issues with women in general or the women in his life. Ken gets along with people, he’s a glad-hander, he’s pretty good at his job, although not very imaginative. But Ken still got fired. And then Ken got his in a big way. I enjoyed that storyline a lot. I felt like that was a great way to deal with Ken’s storyline.

Stan Rizzo Is Still Peggy’s Work-Husband. I love Stan. I love that Stan came into Peggy’s office and got all up in her business about her date. Those two characters – Peggy and Stan, played by Moss and Jay R. Ferguson – have so much chemistry together.

No Megan Draper. Thank God. All we got was a reference to her when Don told Rachel’s sister that he was getting divorced again.

Dawn the Secretary. Where is she? I forget what happened exactly and how Don ended up with that somewhat flaky blonde secretary, but I miss Dawn.

Peggy Lee. That was the song used at the beginning and end of the episode, Peggy Lee’s “Is That All There Is?”
