Tom Hiddleston really wants to play Eric Draven in ‘The Crow’ remake: good choice?

I got my May issue of Vogue this weekend, and as soon as I brought it inside, I tore off the plastic bag and flipped through the last quarter of the mag, otherwise known as “all of the interesting fashion and interior design p0rn”. I skimmed the Carey Mulligan cover story (I still haven’t worked up the energy to read the whole thing), and then I was completely startled to chance upon this editorial featuring your boyfriend Tom Hiddleston and English model Cara Delevingne. I’m including the scans of the editorial in this post.

Americans may know Cara best as an up-and-coming model in the Burberry campaign, or from her romance with Harry Styles right after Harry dumped Taylor Swift. She’s only 20 years old, and you can really tell in these photos because she looks like a pouty, petulant child. The editorial story is supposed to be that Cara is an actress about to get her big break in a love story with Hiddles as her leading man. The problem? Hiddles is doing all of the emotional heavy lifting and Cara looks dead-eyed, drugged-out, bored and uninterested. It also doesn’t work because you can really only see Tom’s face clearly in ONE of the photos. Something nice: I like Vogue’s new movement to bring in attractive actors for editorial shots with models, but even their editorial with Michael Fassbender was far superior (and he looked like the Sprockets dude).

In other Hiddles news, did you know that he’s now the leading contender to play Eric Draven in the remake of The Crow? If you take a trip in the Way-Back Machine, you may remember that Bradley Cooper (!!!) was once the leading contender for the lead in the remake, but stuff happened, some people got sued, blah blah, etc. They’re still going ahead with the remake though, and The Wrap reported Friday that Hiddles is in “early discussions” to play Eric Dravin, the man who returns from the dead to avenge his death. The Wrap reported:

Hiddleston recently had dinner with producers and sent them a makeup test that he did on his own in London. He will undergo a proper makeup test in the coming days, as the character’s appearance is important to fans of the franchise, who should be delighted with the casting of a major member of the Marvel universe.

Acclaimed Spanish filmmaker F. Javier Gutierrez (“Before the Fall”) is directing “The Crow” from a script by Cliff Dorfman (“Warrior”), though it’s possible that other writers will be credited as well.

Production is tentatively scheduled to begin this fall, though the timetable could move slightly depending on several factors.

O’Barr wrote “The Crow” to help him deal with the death of his girlfriend, and it’s the story’s emotional component that sets it apart from other comic book properties. Hiddleston appealed to producers who were enamored with his ability to project both a light and dark side. He has also displayed gifted physical talents as the villainous Loki in “The Avengers,” as well as impressive dramatic chops in the acclaimed indie film “The Deep Blue Sea.”

I think the subtext (or context) is that Tom really wants this part and he’s really pulling out all the stops to get it. Usually, an up-and-coming actor in Hiddleston’s position wouldn’t have to grovel so much and do so much extra stuff (doing his own makeup test and agreeing to a “proper” makeup test) to prove he can do the part. That being said, it’s an iconic role and whether or not the film fails or succeeds, if Tom gets the role, it would change his career. Personally, I don’t hate the idea of him in the part, but I wasn’t one of those people lighting candles for the late Brandon Lee either (no disrespect, I just didn’t get why there was so much breast-beating about that tragedy). It would be a physically demanding part, but I think Tom is better at the physical stuff than people think.
