Crystal Renn, the model who became a famous plus-size model after recovering from anorexia, wrote a book called ‘Hunger’ then became a body-positive advocate and wanted to change sample sizes from a 2 to an 8…. is back at work as a skinny straight-size model – here she is on the cover and inside Black Magazine.

A while back, Crystal claimed that her weight loss was not intentional:

People often call me a hypocrite ‘oh, she lost weight’. I didn’t choose this, I didn’t ask for this, this happened!

On embracing her size 12 figure:

‘I still have bad body days,’ she explained. ‘But it’s OK to have bad days. I don’t think anyone can feel completely confident all the time. But I feel so much more connected to who I am now [than I did a few years ago]. I feel completely connected to my body and that’s been amazing to experience.’

On the ‘plus-size’ model label:

‘I embrace [the label] for what it is. I look at plus size as more of an industry word, but it doesn’t bother me, I love it. Since I have been modeling, there has always been a straight board and a plus size board of models and that isn’t something I see as being negative. That’s just the way that it is. When I speak to people in the street and they ask what I do, I sometimes get some funny remarks. But I think being plus size is a beautiful thing. And it’s an industry term, really, so I do understand why people don’t always understand it.

Plus-Size Model Candice Huffine in Pirelli Calendar

Candice Huffine is the first plus-size model that appeared in the Pirelli Calendar, the 2015 version… dressed in sexy lingerie and latex corsets. 30 year-old Candice, who is a size 12-14 US, says:

‘I love my body and am happy in it, [and] if me showing it to the world can help other ladies in any way, then game on. When you love your body, you feel OK to strip down.’

On plus-size modeling:

‘Being a plus-size model in an industry where there aren’t many means there are some opportunities I wouldn’t have had otherwise. But there are also less jobs available, particularly in mainstream and high-end fashion. I know a lot of stunning girls who are not working because being a size 8 to 14 you are in no man’s land even though you have a normal, healthy body.’

‘People are surprised when I turn up on a shoot and I can model. But why shouldn’t I be able to do it just because I’m a size 16 (UK)? It’s disappointing as I love catwalk modelling, it’s more exciting than being on a shoot so it sucks not to be included. Plus-size models are being used more in magazines and in the media but not on the runway and not by high-end designers like Prada. I’d love them to use more curvy girls but it’s like a taboo and I don’t know why. It screams lack of diversity. It doesn’t send out a good message to teenager girls who are impressionable. They’re not coat hangers, they’re girls and it’s bad for them to only see skinny frames on the catwalk. I hope I can be a strong role model for them but there’s not enough of us plus-size models.’
