Alex Van Halen explains the band’s ‘no brown M&M’s’ tour rider

Here’s a fun fact: M&M’s were first concocted in Newark, New Jersey in 1941 for soldiers as a candy that wouldn’t melt in your hands. (I’d like to know whether they meant the chocolate or the coating or if the recipe has changed since then, because my hand is a rainbow of colors after I snack on them, but I digress…) Among the original five colors was brown, the shade we will focus on today. The spotlight was unexpectedly thrust upon brown M&M’s in the 1980s thanks to rock band Van Halen including an infamous ban on them in their tour rider. Pour quoi? Did Eddie Van Halen think they tasted bad? Did frontman David Lee Roth have a traumatic childhood association? Were the rockers just messing with us? Well, drummer Alex Van Halen explains all in his memoir, [From People]

You know what? I’m going with them on this. Is it a bonkers method for checking equipment pre-show? Absolutely. And is it really logical to conclude that if a venue cuts corners on M&M’s, they’ve definitely done the same for something that actually matters to the music and performance? Maybe not. Still, I bet more people would pay closer attention to workplace safety precautions if candy were somehow involved! And you have to applaud the novelty, the creativity. Many artists have “primadonna” stipulations in their tour riders, ranging from the eccentric to the outrageous to the downright perplexing. But they’re usually self-serving, unlike in this case where the band was willing to risk being viewed as divas in the name of quality control! Bravo boys!

So no, I won’t be making fun of Van Halen for their undeniably wackadoodle approach to ensuring a good show. What I want to know is twofold: why brown, and, perhaps most crucial of all, what happened to all the brown M&M’s that were successfully removed by professional production staff? Color is emotional/visceral to begin with, and I’ve found that M&M colors in particular can elicit very heated responses. Or at least they have in my mother’s life. Tan was her favorite M&M color. Of course, we don’t have tan M&M’s now, because in 1995 they held a public vote wherein blue won to be the replacement. My mother has never forgiven M&M’s for this. I asked her why, and her response was, “Tan was sophisticated. Blue was just stupid.” But wait, there’s more! When I was a toddler my mother had to stand her ground against the other parents in my playgroup — they’d all decided to dress us tykes up as M&M’s for Halloween, and my mother fashioned me as a hot pink M&M. And adults actually objected because it wasn’t a “real” M&M color. Don’t worry, they didn’t stop us.

David Lee Roth cancels his remaining Vegas shows, starts retirement

David Lee Roth at a Van Halen reunion concert in 2007

Van Halen’s lead singer, David Lee Roth, is retiring early. David, 67, announced his retirement back in October but said that he was going to complete his shows in Vegas before hanging up his mic. It’s thought that, due to the rapid spread of the Omicron variant, David has decided to cancel the rest of his Vegas shows and go into early retirement. David didn’t announce that he was retiring early. However the House of Blues website shows that his remaining show dates were canceled. In David’s actual retirement announcement, he said the loss of his dear friend, Eddie Van Halen, and time being short, were motivators. Below are a few more details from Entertainment Weekly:

After previously announcing in October that he’d be “throwing in the shoes” following a round of concerts at the city’s House of Blues venue throughout January, the venue’s website indicates Roth will no longer move forward with performances slated for Jan. 5, 7, 8, 14, 15, 21, and 22.

Representatives for Roth didn’t immediately respond to EW’s request for confirmation on the reason the shows were nixed, though the spread of the Omicron variant amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has prompted the postponement and/or cancellations of several other in-person events around the world, from numerous Broadway shows to concerts by artists like Megan Thee Stallion, Doja Cat, Lil Nas X, and more.

“I’m retiring,” Roth told the publication last year. “This is the first, and only, official announcement… I’m not going to explain the statement. The explanation is in a safe.”

Still, he referenced “the departure of my beloved classmate recently” with reference to Van Halen, suggesting that health concerns might’ve played a part in his decision to retire.

“I am encouraged and compelled to really come to grips with how short time is, and my time is probably even shorter. I thought I might have been the first, frankly… ‘Hey Ed, objects in the rear-view mirror are probably me,’” he said. “And my doctors, my handlers, compelled me to really address that every time I go onstage, I endanger that future.”

[From Entertainment Weekly]

It truly is an end of an era. I grew up listening to Van Halen. My uncle Leon was a 6’9″ Black man who lived in the hood in Houston and loved Rock n Roll. And Rock was one of the many gifts he gave me growing up. He and I used to watch MTV together and that was how I was introduced to Van Halen, Def Leppard, and Motley Crue. Seeing David retire feels like I am losing my uncle all over again. There are so many memories attached to Van Halen’s music and David’s voice for me. But, truthfully, I admire David for being responsible not only for his life but also for the lives of his fans. At this point, as rapidly as Omicron is spreading there is no reason to create a super spreader event just to say farewell. I am sure it wasn’t financially prudent to cancel sold out shows, but life is more important than money. Also, I like how David says that life is short. It feels like losing Eddie so early made David take stock of his life and how he wants to live his final years. Morbid I know, but necessary. Anyways, I never got to see Van Halen in concert which is something I regret but I’ll never forget the first few chords of “Jump” and how it makes me feel when it comes on. My air guitar is always at the ready. I do hope that David gets a chance to just enjoy life and do the things that he wants. Perhaps spend quality time with his family and friends. Like David said, time is short and there is no better way to spend it than with those who love us.

The Kanye/Jimmy Kimmel Feud Gets More Embarrassing

kanye west

Kanye West flipped out over a joke Jimmy Kimmel made at his expense, which is odd behavior for Kanye. It’s so unlike him to overreact and take his feelings to twitter where he slewed a series of caps locked bizarre and thus hilarious insults at Mr. Kimmel’s way.

I’m on team Kanye solely for the entertainment factor (which is why I’m always on team Kanye, it’s the most entertaining team) but he handled this thing so poorly. But he’s got someone coming to his defense: Irving Azoff, a manager in the music industry who represents Christina Aguilera, Van Halen, Jewel, Journey, and a mishmash of other current artists and old favorites.

Mr. Azoff tweeted,

Hey @jimmykimmel @kanyewest kicked your ass. You look like a joke trying to exploit this.

. @jimmykimmel your low blow comment was uncalled for and shows that you still don’t understand the big time.

Really? Dude, come on, give Jimmy Kimmel credit. I think he’s made it to the big time by now.

Mr. Kimmel’s latest response to all this was (via twitter),

my response to @kanyewest last night http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=It05EvqFD6s&feature=youtu.be … #NODISRESPECTTOBENAFFLECK

I challenge you to a rap battle @kanyewest #Iplaytheclarinet

I didn’t watch the whole video because honestly, I don’t care that much. I skipped around. He basically read Kanye’s tweets on his show, one by one, in his opening monologue with some tame comments.

Does anyone think that maybe they’re both in this together as a joint joke? I want to believe.

YouTube User Tina S Plays Van Halen

Move over, Eddie Van Halen, there’s a new kid in town.

Her name is Tina S. She’s 14 and she’s posted about 20 videos on YouTube over the past 5 years. Her videos are fun to watch, you can see the progression of her talent along the way. Her most recent video, posted two days ago, shows Tina shredding Van Halen’s ‘Eruption’.

She might want to work on her stage presence a little – heh – she looks bored to tears. But we most certainly aren’t. Looking forward to seeing this little mama rock out in the near future. m/
